I am debating on which version to get (either Wii or 360), but I won't be getting it until at least the Wii launch or after. That will give me time to figure out if it is worth it or not.

Grrr.okay, the game is starting to piss me off.  I have tried to make it about 5 times through Ft. Eagle and I keep dying.  I finally got to what I assume is the end boss this time, but I died.  At least in the ruins there was a way to open up a shortcut, but I haven't seen such a thing in Ft. Eagle, so once again, I have to make it all the way through.  I brought 10 potions with me and it wasn't enough.  I may give up on this one if it continues to be like this.

I spent some time walking around as the water nun and using the tech, then I got my second tech, but it was an increase in intelligence, not the health one mentioned.  Must be something about play-style.  Cool, but I want that health power.

You know, I think I remember getting that Intelligence power as well.  Maybe the heal one is a third power?

I've played both, and they're both excellent games, but Contact will definitely last longer and has more meat on its bones.

Contact, a game which people say takes 10 hours to beat will last longer than Clubhouse Games, a game which has 43 games that you can play over and over and has online multiplayer?  I mean, I like Contact and all, but as far as longevity goes, I think Clubhouse Games has Contact beat.

Same here.  I always have the blue suit equipped, but I guess I haven't used the water power enough to get that ability.
7248  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Contact [DS] Impressions on: October 23, 2006, 11:11:53 PM
My only real complaint right now is that I die a great deal.  Now, when you die, you keep everything you earned, but I am faced with a decision to go back to my last save (which I guess I have to turn off the game to do because there isn't any Load screen that I can find other than when you first boot up the game) or run all the way back to try to get where I was, but still fight all the same enemies and everything since they respawn if you leave the room.  Since a lot of the combat is just dice rolls I find that I never want to load up my last save since I am pretty sure I wouldn't make it through.

For instance, at Ft. Eagle, I have died numerous places in the complex but before the next save.  So, I could just start back in the cabin, I guess, by turning off the game, but I am not very likely to make it through.  So, I start back at the boat, work through the forest, get into the base and I make it to the next save spot, but I die further in.  Now, I could start at the last save point, but I probably won't make it again, either.  So, I start back at the boat, work through the forest, work through all the complex that I have done so far, etc., etc., on and on.  Just a wee bit annoying.

Is there some mechanic here that I am missing?  Am I making this harder on myself than it has to be?
7249  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Give me a reason to keep playing Sly 3 on: October 23, 2006, 07:14:07 PM
I've never played any of the Sly games (my son is currently playing through the first one), but I have always heard it is a series that gets worse as it goes on, which would be the opposite of what I hear about Ratchet and Clank.  So, if you base it on that, and given that you weren't too ecstatic about Sly 2, you should probably stop.

7254  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PS3] Resistance is now 720p only on: October 22, 2006, 09:09:05 PM
The thing with 1080p is that there are tradeoffs you have to make to get that resolution.  Devs basically balance assets, framerate, and resolution when making games.  So, if you code the game in 1080p, the framerate is going to suffer.  Now, if you code your graphics engine in such a way that the framerate is acceptable at that resolution, then all is well.  For Resistance, they decided to go with assets and framerate over resolution.  The 1Up Yours podcast has one of the resistance Devs (the producer?  I can't remember) on this week and they dedicate a whole segment to interviewing him.  He basically mentioned everything I've said so far and I think if you are interested in graphics and next-gen, it might be worth a listen.

The only PS3 launch title I am remotely interested in is Resistance and I love the Ratchet and Clank games, so I am giving these devs the benefit of the doubt on this game.  He certainly made the game sound fun.  Still, I probably won't be getting a PS3 until sometime next year due to there only being one game I am interested in and it not being worth $600+.

Spoiler for Hiden:
First off, make sure your tech bar is full before you go in. I beat him wearing the aqua shot outfit. Next, you want to get your health up. I did this with three mystery bbq (just cook up mystery meat) which should get your health up into the 250 range. Equip your best blunt weapon--for me this was a club, but if you haven't found that you could buy a bat. Once the fight begins, save your aqua shot until the end. Beat on the two fists without using your techs. Don't forget you can switch back and forth with (L) if you like. If you're able to avoid a few of those fists, you should be ok.

The last part of the fight (once both fists are gone) is the worst, because of unavoidable attacks that heal the beastie to boot. Unload your aqua shot 5 times for nice damage then hang on until the end. Note that for some reason you'll have to hit B to have terry start fighting again for this last phase.

Right after I posted, I beat the boss using exactly what you had outlined minus the cooking, because I didn't visit that island before coming to the ruins.  Thanks for posting it, though, because it might help others.  I even wore the same outfit that you specified and did the techs the same way.  I guess maybe this is the best way to beat it?  Anyway, I am on the cooking island now, so I can do that part before going onto the next island, since I guess cooking might be important.
7256  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Contact [DS] Impressions on: October 22, 2006, 04:02:17 PM
Okay, I've given it some time and have some initial impressions.  I am finding the game somewhat difficult as I've died quite a few times.  It took me a number of times to beat the Lester dude in the ruins and finally could only do it by having a bunch of herbs.  Then, when I got to the first boss, I didn't have enough herbs to make it through it.  Between the boss' siphon thing and that earth shake thing is guaranteed damage.  I managed to dodge the siphon thing a couple of times, but I am not sure how I was doing it.

So far the game certainly is cute, but I am fairly wary of guys that I die a lot during the beginning (I'm looking at you Ninja Gaiden).  The complaints I have seen about the combat system in reviews don't bother me at all.  I think there is a great deal to the game that I haven't picked up on yet, like which types of weapons do better damage to what types of enemies and such.  Overall, I am enjoying it and I just paused after dying to that boss to write this up and then go back after the boss, so it must have its hooks in me on some level.

Nothing... as long as there's nothing wrong with not outgrowing Nintendo kiddie type franchises.

I can agree with that, but Grue is making it sound like he dreads the day that he finds himself not liking Nintendo stuff

I just find that kinda strange, if you naturally outgrow Nintendo stuff, then so what?

Cause I do dread the day.  Nintendo, to me, equals good clean fun.  Sure, I love my zombie bashing and headshooting people, but my favorite games are the kind that are just plain fun.  Nintendo, for me makes those games.  It reminds me of playing at the arcade in the 80s when I dropped countless quarters into Space Invaders, Asteroids, Frogger, etc.  Video games had a simple innocence back then and Nintendo continues that trend today.  Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Donkey, Kong...the list goes on and all those games have continued to be fun throughout their countless iterations.  Nintendo manages to innovate while still recycling, but they also come up with cool new stuff like Animal Crossing and Pikmin.  So, if I ever get to the point where all I want to play is the next GTA or FPS, I will consider my youthful exhuberance for video games dead and its something I hope never happens.

My experience is the opposite in that I no nobody who cares about the PS3 due to it being perceived as too expensive and due to the limited supply.  I know plenty of people hyped about the Wii.

7267  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: One Game At a Time: My Xbox 360 Purchasing Rule with Contest on: October 20, 2006, 05:14:37 PM
By the way, I have made the decision to implement this rule for all home console systems (with the exception of the Wii launch where I will buy like 4 games).  But besides that initial thing, I will only buy one game at a time for all my home consoles combined (PS2, XBox 360, and Wii).  So, right now it is Okami.  Depending on when I finish that up, the next game will be either Splinter Cell: DA or Final Fantasy XII (If I finish Okami before FF comes out and I deem there is enough time to finish Splinter Cell before FF, I will buy it).  Then, it will probably be Gears of War after I finish whatever the game before turns out to be.  I need to break out of this cycle of having to buy all these games at launch and not really getting around to finishing any of them because I have so many to play and this is going ot be the way to do it.  Oh, one more exception is GH2, because...well, because it's GH2.

This is simply not true.  When XBox 360 releases the 1080p patch, you will be able to get games in native 1080p over component and both games and movies in 1080p over VGA.  That makes it and the PS3 both the only true HD consoles.

After playing TotemBall with my new Live Vision camera, I'm much less excited about the Wii. I know it's not at all the same thing, but waving my arms around just got old pretty fast.

Major Nelson brought this up on this week's podcast because a reader had commented on it.  My first thought was that people really have the mistaken impression that you have to flail around to get the system to recognize your actions.  In TotemBall, you have your arms stretched out and that definitely will bring about fatigue.  Everything I've read on Wii from people who've played is that you can sit there with your arms in your lap and make fairly small motions and it will recognize.

As for living up to the hype, it will live up to my own personal hype, just like the DS did and that's all that really matters to me in the end, I suppose.

Another somewhat pesimistic thought: if you need to be eight feet or so away from the tv screen to play the games properly ... how the hell are the in-store demo kiosks supposed to work? That's a lot of open space that a store has to dedicate for a Wii kiosk. Forever, if they want to always have new games to try out.

Does that make any sense?

Rumor has it, only EBGames stores will get Kiosks due to the issues and the fact they will have to be closely supervised..

Not a good thing for sales IMO.

There have also been rumors that that rumor isn't true.

Again I'm not saying "Oh, this game is evil and shouldn't be on the shelves!" I just think it is worthy of debate -- young people are going to be playing this game, regardless of the ESRB rating (You wouldn't believe the number of children in our neighborhood who played Grand Theft Auto)

I honestly wish that game developers would apply the wonderful openness of the Grand Theft Auto model to subjects that aren't centred about thugs and gangs.

The problem is right there in your first paragraph that I have quoted.  Kids are playing GTA who shouldn't and how is that the fault of the game or game publishers?  If parents took a little more time to figure out what the content of GTA was, then if they let their kids play it, they get to live with the consequences, not the game makers.

I agree with you, though, that I wish developers would take the openess of GTA and apply it to different things.  There have been some, like Mercenaries, but I would welcome more as I am really tired of gangstas.  Bully is also a game that isn't about gangstas and thugs and I will probably pick it up.  It only has a Teen rating, so while maybe not good for little kids, I don't think it will be as bad as GTA and certainly not worthy of being called a Columbine Simulator.

7280  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [DS] Clubhouse Games Impressions? on: October 17, 2006, 08:00:20 PM
I bought it over the weekend and have really enjoyed it.  I have mostly been playing Stamp mode to unlock the extra games.  I did go online and tried to play Spades, but I could never get a game going.  I did get a Texas Hold 'Em game with another person going and when I was about to win, he disconnected and I don't think I got the win in my record, so that kind of pissed me off.  I didn't reconnect to see if maybe it just needed to update or something, so it might not be an actual problem.

There are a great many games in the software and some of them I didn't realize what they were until I played them because they are given names other than the trademarked ones.  For instance, Stratego, UNO, and Parcheesi are in the game, but with different names.  The game is great for quick gaming sessions where you just want to play something real quick and not have to think too much.  I think this will do well as a game that gamers and non-gamers alike can enjoy.
