Played FFXII, Loco Roco, Contact (and then finally got tired of it and traded it in), Guitar Hero, and Children of Mana.

I've been playing Okami, FFXII, and GH2 as well.  I haven't played my 360 in a while, except for Arcade games.  I know I am not a graphics whore, though, because a Wii is in my future.

Guitar Hero 2 and Elite Beat Agents.
7245  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Finally beat Cowboys From Hell on Expert on: November 06, 2006, 02:17:09 AM
I went to Best Buy and they had a Guitar Hero 2 demo with 10 songs on it there.  I played a few of the songs and passed them on Expert my first time through, so I got home and said to myself that today is the day I am going to beat Cowboys From Hell on Expert.  So, I went home, put in GH and loaded up the song.  I haven't even tried playing that song in half a year or more, but I sat there and played it about 12 times before I finally got through.  I jumped up and down and immediately sent out an email to Bill Harris prodding him into matching my feat.  Let's see if he can do it.

Correct. Now you will know the power of sleep mode.  I would commit suicide if I had to sit through the complete boot up each time.  The load times on the PSP itself are usually bad enough.
7247  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Need advice on which console system to buy on: November 05, 2006, 04:31:01 PM
As far as I know, the Wii is not region free.  The 360 can be region free, but it just depends on the publisher of the game itself.  Some games are region free and some are not.  With the PS3, I thought it was region free, but not sure if it is more like the 360 or if it is like the DS where it is truly region free.
7248  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: How common is it for games to not be able to go into "sleep mode" on the PSP on: November 05, 2006, 04:27:45 PM
Is this the only game you have that does this?  No other PSP game I have played does this.  I just pop it into sleep mode and it comes right out.  I assume you've played more PSP games than Dungeon Siege, right?  What I mean to say is you know how to put it into sleep mode, right?  Seems odd that this one game would do this, but stupider things have happened.  If it really is just this game, it would be a reason for me not to buy it right there.

7257  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: I caught one of my local Gamestops in a lie on: November 02, 2006, 05:51:12 PM
I only pre-order a game I know is going to be good (Guitar Hero 2, Final Fantasy XII, etc.)  Otherwise, I need to read reviews (not for the score, but the content of the review) to determine if a game I thought I might like is still worth getting.  From what I have seen, I do think Gamestops and EBs use pre-orders to gauge how many units they need to order on less popular titles.  For something like a Gears of War, they are going to have some extras.  But for a Contact on DS or something like they, they usually don't order more than they have pre-orders for and if they do, it is only like 1-2 units extra, from what I have seen.  Is it Misguided that works for Gamestop on these boards?  Maybe he can comment on whether my perception is reality.

At any rate, the only real reason I go to Gamestop still is because I don't feel like going to a larger store to get my game.  However, I am starting to realize that I think it actually takes more time for me to get a game in a Gamestop because there are only 2 people in there tops and if people have trade-ins, which they usually do, it backs things up.  So, I think the Best Buys and Targets might start getting my stuff unless I have some trade-in credit, because I really am tired of constantly being badgered about preorders.

Are you sure? The article I read implied that there was no way to unlock the content other than buying it.

Here is an exmaple one:

Quote
Autosculpt Exotic Body Kit
Shape your exotic car to your unique specifications by unlocking this Exotic Car Autosculpting kit. This kit includes 13 Autosculpting kits and allows you to sculpt front and rear bumpers, skirt, chop top, and hood. Many of the items in this bundle can be achieved without purchase by progressing through Career, Challenge Series and Reward Card. Visual upgrades apply only to cars in My Cars and can be used in Career

They say that many of the items can be achieved without purchase through the game.  Now, it is interesting that it isn't all of it, which seems to imply that some of the content you cannot get through normal means, which means they are mixing the two and that isn't too cool.  One of the other pieces of content is to get the stuff that comes in the Collector's Edition.  You wouldn't get the videos or whatever, but you get the tracks and cars and everything and for a cheaper price than the Collector's Edition's extra cost (again, you don't get whatever videos they offer).

Can anyone confirm this? I saw over on GAF that EA is offering marketplace content on NFS: Carbon. The catch is, however, that all the content i included on the actual game disk, but you have to pay to unlock it (up to $50 for all the content). I don't like where all this microtransaction stuff is going...

This content is just like the Godfather and Tiger Woods content.  You are paying to unlock things from the get-go that you could earn yourself if you played the game.  If you wanted to pay for it all and not earn it through the game, it would cost you an additional $50.

I beat Okami last night and so gave FFXII a whirl.  I only played up the first save point as I didn't have any time to really play.  So, impressions so far are that the cinematics were nice.  One thing I didn't like was that during cinematics and cut scenes, there is a huge black bar at the bottom.  Kind of annoying.  Is this happening with everyone who has 16:9?  Also, the cinematics had black bars on the left and right as well.  The graphics look really bad on my HDTV.  I am coming off playing Okami, which just looks beautiful and then I come to this with jaggies galore.  Can't say much about the battle system as I barely got into it since this is basically a tutorial stage I am in.  That is all for now.

Howabout this: There will be so many consoles available before the end of the year that they might not completely sell out. You won't have to wait 6 months for the preorder lists to empty before being able to hit your local gaming store and just picking one up.

Better?

In the end, there still might be shortages, but it won't be because there's less than 500k units worldwide available. It'll be because people want the thing, and no matter how many are made, they can't keep up with demand.

I am on board with this sentiment.

And now I know why I was confused about what Destructor said.  That was the statement I was thinking of when I initially answered: that supply would be outpaced by demand and thereby would mean there might be shortages of the unit.

What I meant to say was that unlike the 360 and PS3 launches, there will (in theory) be more consoles available than people buying them. You may actually be able to walk into a store before Christmas and find one, instead of getting one off of eBay for 3 times retail.

Sorry, I misread your statement.  I had another article I read on the brain which stated that demand might outweigh supply on Wii and it caused me to misread your statement.

Many people think the Wii will just flop in general and don't believe it will bring non-gamers into gaming and purchasing units.

By the statement, I assume you are speaking of Nintendo consoles only, as we know you couldn't find a 360 or PS2 at their launches and won't be able to find a PS3.  Also, by Ninteno consoles, I assume you aren't talking about the Japan, where the DS Lite has been very scarce.

There is a great deal of debate among us gamers as to whether Wii will be successful.  If you believe Reggie from Nintendo, they might be onto something with this Wii thing:

Quote
Wii is for both experienced and uninitiated gamers, and it will be available for the masses. Because of demand, we're urging shoppers not to get complacent. The level of demand we're seeing goes beyond the ordinary. Retailers are telling us a significant fraction of customers pre-ordering Wii are nontraditional gamers - people looking for a better way to play. And that's exactly what Wii is designed to provide.

Yes, I know Reggie is President of NOA, but assuming he isn't lying about what retailers are telling him, it looks like Nintendo might be onto something.  It will be very interesting to see what happens this Christmas.

7277  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / My console gaming pet peeve on: November 01, 2006, 03:38:54 PM
One thing I hate in console games is the dreaded re-fight bosses you have already beat.  It comes in two flavors:  just kind of fighting them again and the dreaded "boss gauntlet" where you fight them all back to back with no chance to rest in between.  So, I'm playing Okami and loving the shit out of it.  One of my favorite games of all time I am thinking and then I come to the end place.  I see images on the wall in there and I notice they look familiar.  Too familiar.  Fuck, I think and go into one of the doors and sure enough, I am fighting Ninetails again.  So, it looks like I have to go in and fight every boss again before I can finally fight the final boss.  I hate this kind of shit.  I can only take solace in the fact that it isn't a boss gauntlet because I can save and even buy items in between if I so desire.

Still, what possesses game designers to do this?  My only thought on this is that they do it as a cheap way to extend the length of the game.  However, this game doesn't really need it.  I am about 35 hours in and there are side quests I didn't do, so I am thinking all told, I could spend about 45+ hours in the game.  That is more than enough content and they didn't need to cheapen the game by rehashing the bosses.  Also, pair this with those glowing holes you can find in the ground that (and I have only done one and vowed not to do another) allow you to refight a boss.  Mine was a spider boss and like I said I only did one of them, so I don't know whether the other holes are more spiders or other bosses, but I assume they are other bosses.  Also, I have already fought the dragon guy twice and I assume I need to fight him again in the rehash.  He wasn't terribly challenging, but more annoying because he has 8 heads and just takes a while to kill.

So, moral of the story, game developers out there, is that if you want to send a game from one of the greatest of all time to just great real quick, make me fight bosses multiple times.

My liking of this game has definitely declined.  I am at a point where I think I need to basically grind for money.

Spoiler for Hiden:
On that island with the chick playing the keyboard.  I assume I have to afford the 10K dollar song to do something here and I have only 3K dollars.

There is no money-making action in this game that is exciting enough to make me want to earn that money and so I have a feeling I won't be finishing the game.  Overall, the game is okay, but certainly isn't the ground-breaking RPG all the previews were making it out to be.  It has some humor to it and some okay story, but having just recently finished Phoenix Wright, my bar for humor and story have been pushed a little higher and since the gameplay isn't stellar, that really leaves me with a mediocre game in my hands.
