Ha, this thread is funny, but apparently the button will remain a mystery.  To stayy off topic, though, Voltron never interested me much, for whatever reason, despite being Japanese and having robots.

Played Children on Mana, Twilight Princess, Wii Sports, Tony Hawk Downhill Jam, Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz, Rayman Raving Rabbids, and Wii Sports.  Oh, and Viva Pinata which kicked mucho ass.

I thought the VC was designed to have the Wiimote connect to the back of it (as you're required to have the controller connect to the Wiimote for the wireless connection, right?). My Gamestop didn't get a single VC controller in (even for reserves), so I won't have one until Monday or Tuesday (current estimate).

You plug the controller cable to the wiimote, yes.  I thought maybe theywould clip to each other as well, but I see nothing on the wiimote that could insert into the classic controller.

I'm stil a little confused about registering friends. I added everyone from the sticky in the multiplayer forum into my address book, but when  go to create a message everyone in the address book is grayed out. If I go to the Wii Friends options in the Mii channel it says I haven't registered anyone. So, based on what's above, once someone adds me to to their address book I'll just suddenly be able t create amessage to send to them?

Love the console so far. Have't had any time whatsoever today to play any games or really check out te console. Maybe tonight.

The other person has to register you as well in order for them to not be gray.  Also, there seems to be some delay even when you both have it added, though that could have been due to the network problems earlier.  You can also send out emails to people from the Wii itself.  The address it sends it from has you Friends code in it, so it might be a good way to get your code out to the people whose emails you know.
7246  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / What is that center button at the top on the Wii classic controller? on: November 20, 2006, 12:38:25 AM
There is a button at the top edge of the Wii classic controller and when you press it, it moves some plastic on some little grooves on the back of the controller.  It makes it look like it should attach to something, but there are no corresponding grooves on the wiimote for it to attach to.  The diagram on the insert that comes with that controller has the button on it, but no explanation pointing to it saying what it does.  Anyone have a clue?
7247  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: I am playing with my Wii now :) who else has it? on: November 20, 2006, 12:36:39 AM
Okay, I finally got around to posting.  I got my Wii last night at midnight from Gamestpo as I had preordered it.  I did not, however, preorder another wiimote and nunchuck or the classic controller.  Gamestop was actually one wiimote short on their preorders and had no extras on any of the other controllers.  So, I left there and went to WalMart and had to wait at the end of the line because they didn't just put the controllers out on the shelves, but were selling them in Layaway along with the Wiis.  There were only 20 Wiis they had and even so, it took them an hour to get them all out.  Then, I walked up and all the had for controllers was one last wiimote.  I picked it up and went home at about 1 AM.  My son (who is 7) was with me and he stayed up until about 2 AM while I hooked up everything, got it all set up for WiFi and all and we played a little bit of Wii Sports.  He whooped my ass in bowling and I sent him to bed.  I stayed up until 4 AM trying out the various games I got:

Wii Sports
Twilight Princess
Marvel Ultimate Alliance
Rayman
Super Money Ball
Tony Hawk.

I struggle a bit with the 480p thing because I forgot you had to set it in the options of the Wii and not in the games, so I wasted some valuable time mucking around until I finally located it.  I woke up this morning at about 9 and tried to go get a nunchuck and classic controller.  I located a classic controller, but no luck on the nunchuck as everyone was sold out of the damn thing.  I went to 3 Targets, 1 Wal Mart, 2 Circuit Cities, 1 Best Buy, and 2 Toys R Us looking for the nunchuck.  I came home a couple hours later and bought one online at Gamestop, which shows Shipping in 24 hours, so hopefully, with the 2-day shipping I paid for, I will have it Wednesday.  Looks like the nunchuck is required for a couple of the games I bought for multiplayer, so him and I only go to do Wii Sports and Tony Hawk.

Today, I bought Super Mario 64 (which I love) and was impressed at the Virtual Console thing.  Out of the launch VC titles, I can see myself buying Zelda, Sonic, Mario Brothers,  and Donkey Kong.  Will be cool when they get more stuff.

I really love the controls a great deal and it is exactly as great as I hoped it would be.  Fun in gaming just took a big step up with the release of Wii.

With regards to the interface, one complain t I have is I wish I could do stuff in the Wii menu and keep my place in the game.  Like when they release the Opera browser, I would like to be in the game, pop over to the browser, go to GameFaqs, and then pop back into the game right where I was.  Doesn't look like you can do that.

I love the fact that when you have messages, even with the console off, that the blue light thing blinks at you.  I had added a friend of mine and he sent me a message and I looked up and saw the blue light pulsing letting me know I had a message.  Very cool.  We set each other our Miis from our Mii program and I was able to assign his to my entry for him in the address book.

Yes, I do think it is slightly aggravating with the Friend Code thing as others have stated.  However, I know the reason they did it was to help protect the children and as a father, the minor annoyance sits okay with me.  You only have to go through the thing once with each Friend and once it is done, you can just send messages from your address book with no issues.

Zelda....I am over two hours in and I am in love with the game.  I can tell it is going to be truly wonderful and I have done very many cool things in it.  The wiimote stuff is enjoyable and I do prefer it over mashing the A button.  The controls are very easy to use and I can't wait to get further in the game.

The system is worth every penny I paid for it and everything I  hoped it would be when I first heard about the wiimote seems to have come to fruition.  I love the little speaker in the wiimote.  I love the wiimote and nunchuck combo.  I love the controls in Tony Hawk with the sideways wiimote.  I love the whole thing.  The graphics are servicable, but I also knew what to expect before I bought the system.  This system isn't about graphics for me, it is about innovation in control and the possibilities for immersion in the game and I think it has delivered well so far and I look forward to the future as developers come up with even cooler things.

I enjoy VGCats because of the great photoshops that people over at GAF come up with to make fun of them.  I think they are overly critical of the comic, though, as I find most of them contain some humor.  I do tend to agree with the general consensus, though, that they use way too many panels in the ri strip and need to cut down a great deal of them as they tend to just be unnecessary filler.

That's not true. People knew the 360 was in short supply....they also knew that people that won the various contests were selling their 360's for over $1000. There were a bunch of people outside Best Buy on 360 launch day that were there for the express purpose of selling it. Not at the level of the PS3, but there were a bunch there that were only there to sell it.

I agree with you Hetz that there was some eBay action going on back then, but I think more people now realize how much profit can be made on eBay with a short supply system launch because of what I happened with the 360.  This isn't because the PS3 is some super system.  It is merely because more are informed that a nice profit can be made.

As Chaz mentioned, the easiest thing to do would be to set your 360 or an upconverting DVD player to 720p.  If it works then you're good to go.

In that case, mine does work.  I have my 360 set to 720p right now.
7268  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: The PS3 downscales 720p on incapable TVs on: November 16, 2006, 03:23:17 AM

Quote from: Kevin Grey on November 16, 2006, 02:12:38 AM

Most CRTs won't upscale that way.  I think when they say 720p, they mean it accepts Over-the-Air antenna signals from nets that broadcast in 720p (ABC is one I believe), but won't accept a 720p signal input via component or HDMI.  I know that's the case with my TVs at least.  You need the box doing the decoding to upscale the content- usally the Sat/Cable box, upconverting DVD player, or the 360.  Sounds like the PS3 won't do that.

They list 720p as a resolution on the diagram when discussing the component inputs, though.  To me, that seems to indicate that those inputs take 720p.  However, it says nothing about whether it displays it at that resolution or not.  I hate that my TV has no way to tell me what mode it is currently at right now.  It is a SOny Wega, so you would think it would, but I can't find anywhere that gives me this information.
7269  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: The PS3 downscales 720p on incapable TVs on: November 16, 2006, 01:59:56 AM
This would affect me.  Fuck Sony.

Actually, I am kind of confused on this.  My TV says it takes 480i-1080i inputs and mentions 720p.  It doesn't mention anywhere that it actually upscales 720p to 1080i, but it is a CRT HDTV and I have read that all CRT HDTVs upscale from 720p to 1080i and don't actually display in 720p.  Is this true?  Unfortunately, I have no way to determine what mode my TV displays in actuality.

What I believe he means is that when you load this quicksave, it is no longer available to load from again.  So, let's say you load your quicksave and then you lose battery power.  You would no longer have that quick save to go to to load up.

Ever since I was able to downgrade my PSP to firmware 1.5 I use it all the time.  I'm playing through Zelda Link's Awakening DX and Chrono Trigger now, I have e-books going on there and I'm able to watch videos that are encoded to use the full resolution of the PSP's screen and look gorgeous.  I probably use my PSP 3 or 4 times as much as I used to.

Of course I'm not using it to play PSP games which is a problem for Sony.

This brings up a good point as well.  I had made the mistake of upgrading my firmware past a point of being able to go back.  I would actually use the device more if I could run homebrew on it.  I understand why Sony wants to fight it, but it is a shame as well because if I could run homebrew, I might actually use the system for e-books and things like that.  That still doesn't bode well for the system as a games machine, though, which is why I bought it at launch.

Wii
1 nunchuck
1 wiimote
either a Wavebird or retro contoller (probably the Wavebird, since I will be able to play all old games with it, whereas I can't play Gamecube games with the retro controller)
Super Money Ball
Twilight Princess
Rayman
Either Red Steel or Marvel Ultimate Alliance

I don't think I need to buy the points cards because I assume I can purchase VC games with a credit card, right?

Re Battery life:  The battery life really bugged me at first.  I quickly realized I almost never played out of reach of a outlet.  If I get any serious PSP play time, my PSP charges the next day at my desk, or overnight after I hit the hay.  Ultimately...I never play long enough to drain the battery in one sitting (even with WIFI titles) and it ends up on a charger much like my phone does.   I actually can't wait to get Lumines 2, Warhammer: Battle for Atluma, and Yu-Gi-Oh GX Tag Force.

The problem is that I do run out.  I travel a good deal and play my handhelds a great deal.  Getting only 4 hours out of some games sucks and sucks hard.

Creepy Smell brings up another good point, which I didn't mention in my post.  The portability of PSP is much less since it is a bigger unit and doesn't fold.  I have the Logitech case and it just isn't friendly to stick that thing in your pocket when you want some gaming on the go.  So, my DS Lite goes in my pocket instead.
7277  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: I feel sorry for the PSP. on: November 15, 2006, 05:40:07 PM
I'll tell you what it is for me.  I struggle ever day with whether to sell mine off or not.  I just got Loco Roco recently, which was the first PSP game I had bought in many months.  I beat it the other night and am sitting thinking about what game to get next.  There are many out there I can choose, but I just can't seem to get excited about any of them due to the real problem of the PSP.

For me, the main problem are load times and shitty battery life.  The games I have bought have been very good, but I dread playing them because I know I am wasting precious gameplay time with load times, which just don't exist on the DS.  And yes, I know about sleep mode and use it on both the DS and PSP.  Sleep mode doesn't fix the fact that in some games, when I hit Start to bring up a menu, it can take many seconds to actually pop up, whereas on the DS it comes up instantly.  On a home console this isn't so bad, but on a handheld, it is so noticeable.

I am torn between Red Steel and Marvel Ultimate Alliance.  I have a 360, but never got around to getting Marvel for it and I was curious how it might play better with the Wii controls.  Have you played the 360 version?  If so, how do you compare the two?  I know the graphics won't be as good, but is the gameplay better on Wii?

Checking out the IGN review it looks like the Wii may be like the DS in that multi-platmform games may be something to avoid.

Well, to be fair, it doesn't have multiplayer and of course the graphics aren't going to be as good.  I think that if it would have least had multiplayer, it would have been closer to the score that the others got because the controls would have made up some of the points it lost for graphics.
