I love Ringabel's voice, though!

So, I've reached that dreaded point where I want to be every job, but I can't.  I had just settled on:

Agnes: Sword Fencer/White Mage
Tiz: Ranger/Thief
Edea: Knight/Sword Fencer
Ringabel: Time Mage/Black Mage

But I just got Summoner (and have three summons) and Red Mage.  Now I'm thinking:

Agnes: Red Mage/Something Else (I figure if I can get my Black and White Mage stuff to one person, that is great)
Tiz: Ranger/Thied (Probably will keep this)
Edea: Knight/Sword Fencer (until I get Valkyrie or something else)
Ringabel: Summoner/Time Mage

This will likely change when I get the next jobs.  Too many choices!

Oh, and forgot to mention that I would love to get someone in Merchant because I like the idea of it.

Also, Gratch, I am with you in that once I pick the game up, I have a real hard time putting it down.

Lol, you are?  nifty!   You have to keep track of which gate is open and when.  For instance, to get the the Warrens (aka slums) they are only open between midnight and 6am.  After that they close the doors and you can't get there until the next day.  There are only a handful of days to finish the game, so getting there to find a closed gate is just annoying.

It writes those times on the map.

I also finished all the demo upgrades and beat the ???? at the end, so I'm ready to jump into the full game.  Hopefully I'll have a chance to start later today!

Last 24 hours.  They need about 19k to get it funded.  They should make it if all the fence sitters get moving.  Tick tock.

Edit:  Well, that didn't take long.  I doubt they'll make any of the stretch goals, but they will get funded.  They did mention opening up paypal after the Kickstarter to try to reach some of the stretch goals.

The problem is the only way I will pay money on this is if they hit the Vita goal.  Would love this on a portable.

Well, this is Hans and Luke wrapped up into one, it looks like.  I'd have been fine with him just being a fringer, but Jedi sell, so I guess they had to go this way.
167  Gaming / Portable Gaming & Apps / Re: [vita] Toukiden: The Age of Demons on: February 13, 2014, 02:47:55 PM
I actually bought this on Tuesday and have played a fair bit.  It's a Monster Hunter clone, but they don't have all of the item crafting that you get in that series.  You can craft weapons and armor and stuff from things you get from monsters.  What it does have, though, are Mitamas, which are Japanese spirits that you can attach to your weapon and that give you abilities and boosts.  I've been enjoying it.  The graphics are very nice, but not so sure about the online part as I've had some bad luck with having groups stay connected.  Did manage to get some time in, though, and it was fun playing with others.

Edit - I put my Vita's IP in my router's DMZ and it seems to have fixed things.  I think the issue is that the Vita and PS3 have the same ports you have to open and I am already forwarding those ports to my PS3 IP address.  After I made the move, it works great now.  I'd never really played anything online with the Vita before.

The more I think about it, the more I think you don't get villagers from Friends.  I think you only get them for your once a day NetFriend request and Streetpasses.  I just added a friend from here just now and I don't believe it gave  me a new villager.

I'm still early in the game (Ch2), but so far I've been trying to say focused on archtypes too.  Sounds like I'm following a common approach:  Tiz and Edea are melee, and Agnes and Ringabel are mages.

At first I went girls as mages and boys as melee, but Gratch's post and some other things I read pointed that Tiz/Edea as melee and Agnes/Ringabel as mages is the better way to go.

This is turn-based? Weird, every video I've ever seen of the game made it seem like an action spin off.

No, it isn't turn-based.  You can assign up to 4 actions (one each to a controller button).  You then pick those actions and they use so much of a bar.  If that bar goes empty, you can switch over to another "class" which has its own bar.  It's all real time.

Also, I'm fuzzy on how you activate SP to jump in the turn order at any time.  I have 3 SP points available, but am not sure how to use them. I've even got a tutorial quest sitting in my queue about it, but I haven't figured out how to activate them during battle.   icon_redface

All it does is let you do an action no matter what your BP status is.  So, let's say you max Braved and something bad happened and you *have* to get a spell or action out.  Hit Start and you can use SP to do whatever you want right then and there, without worrying about what part in a turn you would have to wait to in order to get it off (you also get to pick who will do it).  I believe you earn 1 SP per 8 hours you leave the game running while the 3DS is in sleep mode and you max out at 3.  Of course, you can also buy them, but no sane person will do that.

Oh, you can also do it either when you're picking your normal actions to start a turn, or even during the middle of the battle.

Thanks, and wow, I just saw about how the demo is its own separate adventure?!  Downloading now!

I don't know why I've turned a blind eye to this for so long, but the more I read about it now the more I think I'll love it.  It just seems so delightfully cliche in all the ways I love my JRPGs to be cliche.  Farm boy whose village has an inexplicable disaster?  Sold!

Yeah, but they add in some cool mechanics that are not cliche, like being able to turn off random encounters and then autobattle and speeding up combat so that you can grind quicker if needed.

What extra stuff can you do in the game when you exchange friend codes with someone?

Couple of things:

1) The biggest one is Abilink.  What it allows you to do is to assign a friend to one of your characters.  That character then has access to all the abilities that your friend has earned.  So, let's say you are a level 1 Black Mage and your friend is Level 10 Black Mage.  You would have access to all the abilities from 1 through 10.
2) The other one, which you can also get from Streetpass and Spotpass is the ability to Summon them during the battle to do whatever action they saved and sent out.
3) I can't remember if you technically get them as a villager as well, but you might.  I've almost gotten Norende fully maxed at this point, but most of that was due to bringing over 20 villagers from the demo and I know you get some every day from Spotpass.  I'm up to 38 villagers now.

I got to the forest part and was getting my butt handed to me, but then tried just having everyone but my healer go brave 4 times and was able to clear each encounter first round.  It didn't help that I had just switched two characters jobs around.  Changed Edea from a Black Mage to a Knight with Black Mage spells and then made Ringabel into a Black Mage prime with Time Mage secondary.  Once I get them each higher in their main jobs, I think I will level Ringabel in Time Mage a bit and probably have Edea get one of the new jobs that looks to be coming up based on what I saw in the story.  I've got Tiz leveling up in Monk and have Thief as the secondary.  With Agnes, I still have her as White Mage for main and Sword Fencer secondary.  I was thinking about still leveling her up, but I already have access to Level 3 spells for her, so I think I will make the switch.

Actually, while typing this I made most of the changes.  Going to keep Ringabel as Black Mage until I get to Level 7 to get to the Level 3 spells.  Switched Agnes to main Spell Fencer, Tiz to main Thief, and pulled Edea's second off of Black Mage, since her and Ringabel can now cast the same level and instead put her second as Sword Fencer, just in case I need extra elementalness in a sword attack.

I'm very stoked for this one.  I am the rare person that actually really liked FFXIII and FFXIII-2 and I also enjoyed the demo for LR.  I like the switching between jobs mechanic a whole bunch and like this new combat system I played in the demo.  I knew this one wouldn't review very well and lots of people talk about how the franchise has declined, but I think the deal is that games as a medium has expanded so much and lots of people have moved past JRPGs.  Also, people hold onto the old games and how they worked and so when they try something new, it kind of upsets people.  I was okay with them taking away the exploration of typical FF games in XIII, though they did give you some more freedom about 40 hours into the game.  For me, I just like the general world of a FF game and am okay with them experimenting.  I like this 13 days until the end of the world mechanic they're putting into this one.

That's actually what I like about it.  When I die, that makes me want to beat it even more.  So, I get that "one more turn" effect from this game.
182  Gaming / Portable Gaming & Apps / Re: Bravely Default coming to North America on: February 11, 2014, 04:17:04 PM
Alright, folks.  You guys need to update your characters to the servers.  Only person who has done it is Gratch and I abilinked to him for a nice surprise (you've apparently played this game quite a bit).  Also, don't forget to update your Summon here and there as well.  Most of you have a Power 30-something summon.  I need to update mine as well (was going to do it on a boss battle, but the guy I was going to do it with died and then I had to resurrect him and I beat the battle before I could).  When you go to Save, choose Update Data and it should get the latest version of your Friends and update your latest version.  When it is done, it will tell you who it got an update for.

Obviously at the beginning of the game, we'll all pretty much have the same job classes leveled as you basically get Monk, Black Mage, White Mage, Knight, Monk, and Freelance as part of the story (and can get Thief and Merchant pretty quickly), but eventually we'll all spread out and it can be cool to get an ability from another job that you didn't even level in.

My Monk has Knight as his second and it's nice having the defensive stuff that Gratch has leveled in that class without me having to actually level it.

Gonna bring this one back from the grave.  I absolutely love this game and Demon's Souls, but for some reason I had gotten distracted from both and then when I went back to them, was afraid I wasn't going to remember how to play and the mechanics and all the craziness that went with it.  So, fly forward in time to a few weeks ago and I decided that I wasn't going to let that stop me.  So, I beat Demon's Souls last night and Dark Souls just now and I feel like a king!  I had basically worked on Dark Souls until I got to the part where you unlock the final boss (I think when I picked things back up again, I had just finished the boss in Anor Londo) and then played Demon's Souls until I beat it last night (when I picked it up, I think I had done a couple of parts of World 1,2, and 3, the first part of 4 and none of 5).  I'd love to go and play New Game+, but too many games to be played.  This is the type of game I wish I had back in college when I could only afford a game or two as I would have just played it over and over like I did with A Link to the Past and Super Mario World on the SNES.  Anyway, just on a Souls high and wanted to share.

I think it is done through the normal 3DS friend code.  Then when you go to Add Friends via Internet, it goes out and look for those who have Bravely Default as well.  For two systems to be friends, both have to have invited each other.  I will look in the 3DS thread in Multiplayer to see if you guys are maybe there.

For sure.  Being on a yearly cycle doesn't give you the luxury of being able to do much.  We've seen it even with non-story type games such as the EA Sports titles.  I don't like the GTA series, so it wouldn't matter to me if it went to a year or 10 years (same with Call of Duty), but something like Assassin's Creed could benefit from even going to once every other year.  From a business sense, though, it makes complete sense why they do this.

I think Madden could benefit from having a new game every other year and the year in between a roster update, but they'll make less money in the end and there's no way they'll do it.

Yeah, I guess since it is its own story, that makes sense.  They also could have potentially set it in the XIII world, had some cameos from Lightning, and made it a FF game.  At any rate, I have been very stoked for this game.  Almost time to come out!

You know, I'm not sure.  As much as I love Final Fantasy, I guess I am kind of glad they did it this way.  People won't moan that FF sucks these days (I personally loved the XIII series), you get a new universe that they could potentially grow and it all feels like an old Final Fantasy game...everyone wins!

I finally downloaded the demo last night (side note: wtf is up with consoles these days?  to get the demo had to update the system, create an account, create a Mii, link the account, verify via email, etc etc back and forth just to get access to download.  If I was a kid I would have been crying or lost patience way before I got to play.)

Back to the demo - game looks like a lot of fun, particularly the job system.  Combat seems really tough, and clearly you aren't meant to wander into some places before you are ready lol.  I don't know if I did something wrong or what, but I spent most of my cash on Cura, but no one seems able to cast it.  So I'm kind of screwed it seems - I'm shifting to Easy difficulty until I figure out what's going on.

To be fair, that process you went through is a one time thing that came with the Miiverse for 3DS update.  You'll not have to do it again.

In order to use Cura, you need to have someone have the job of either Red Mage or White Mage, the Job Command in abilities set to WHM or RDM, and then that particular job (WHM or RDM) has to have been leveled up to the level that allows you to use Cura (which is not the first level version of that spell, so if you are just starting out, just buy Cure).

Also, start out by going to the west (but get some experience by just battling the stuff in the general overworld.  The other directions are harder.  The area to the northeast is the second area you are meant to go to, and the area south is the last.  Basically, follow the quests (you can get one at a time) and that will kind of guide you where you need to go.
