I've played all the games on that list and loved them all.  I've beaten all of them except for Papers, Please and Gunpoint, but will get around to it.

Lordnine, trying to figure out why you hate Dear Esther with a passion.  I can understand it not being your thing or being indifferent about it and it's really just you pushing your character through the entire experience (which is also the same for Gone Home, though you get a little more interaction), but not sure how you can hate it with a passion.

Managed to beat the game last night.  Got really frustrated during the last combat sequence as I just kept dying over and over.  Times when I thought I should have gotten a stealth kill, I didn't and head shots with the assault rifle weren't resulting in quick kills.  Luckily toward the end, I had enough flamethrower ammo to just kind of end it all.  Enjoyed the ending, but my overall impression of this GOTY (for many) is it's not my GOTY for sure, but I enjoyed the characters and story.

Gamestop is going to be so screwed.

I'm not so sure.  This is serving people who have PS4s to be able to play PS, PS2, and PS3 games.

The streaming can be used on about anything Sony. Even Bravia TV's will be able to do it.

Yeah, I forgot to mention that.  Still, it's not cannibalizing the future of Sony's software disc sales for PS4 titles.  They've already sold a ton of PS3 titles and while there are still games coming out for maybe a year or so on PS3, that will eventually mostly dry up.  Gamestop will still be able to sell discs to people with actual PS3s.

I'm not saying there won't be impact...I just don't think it will be dire enough for Gamestop to close their doors.

I'm not so sure.  This is serving people who have PS4s to be able to play PS, PS2, and PS3 games.  I don't think Gamestop even sells used PS games and I doubt the amount of PS2 games they sell is huge.  That leaves PS3 games, which this would affect, but I really think backwards compatibility is one of those things we all say we want, but the amount of times we go back and play older games isn't that huge.  I think if it was PS4 games they were doing this with (and maybe that will eventually come), it would be a bigger deal, but given the amount of PS3s out there, the decline in price of PS3s so that people who couldn't afford them, much less a PS4 keeping physical PS3 games as a desired product, the infancy of the PS4, etc....I think Gamestop is still okay.

I always hear about people having issues with Amazon, but I've never had a single issue with them in all the years I've done business with them.  They're pretty amazing in my opinion.  In fact, I ordered something right before Christmas and it came a day earlier than I thought it would.  I'm also a Prime member.

Streetpass Mode is when you leave your game running and the wireless antenna on, but close the lid on the 3DS.  The idea is that as you carry your 3DS around throughout the day, you will pass near enough to other people who also have a suspended 3DS in their pockets that the systems will ping each other and unlock special stuff.

In the context of Bravely Default, the additional takeaway is that building time passes while the system is in suspend mode, but not while it's off.

-Autistic Angel

Ah, thanks.  Even if I did carry it around for some reason, the chances of me crossing paths with another person who even owned a DS - much less had one on and in their pocket - are exactly zero.  smile

It's easier now that there's Streetpass Relay which means that places like Starbucks that have Nintendo Zone will store the last 6 people who passed by and then you can Streetpass them by going there.  Not sure where you live, but maybe that will help you.

With Last of Us, you have to hunker down behind cover

I think that might be the cause of your issues with the game right there. The Last of Us doesn't want you to hunker down behind cover to slowly take down the enemies. It will actively punish you for doing so. The game expects you to keep moving, preferably out of sight and/or behind cover. It wants you to aggressively punish the enemy for trying to outsmart you. If you stay still, your enemies will take advantage of your known position by both flanking and rushing you. They don't play fair, and neither should you. Keep moving, place traps wherever the enemy thinks you are, and don't be afraid to disengage quietly from combat to return to stealth. It's a very rich combat system, but it won't feel that way if you play it like most other shooters, including Uncharted.

Of course, none of this is true against the "zombies". It's the humans you shouldn't underestimate. They know how to deal with someone staying in one place.

I was being a little simplistic with my description, but yes I am moving from one place of cover to another.  It's not making the combat fun. frown  Stealth is another issue of the game in that I never feel truly comfortable that I am sneaking up on a person.

I'm not dying or anything, so it isn't even that it's frustrating me because I am not making it through the combat.  It really is just that I don't enjoy those sections when they happen.  Just to tell you the latest part in spoilers:

Spoiler for Hiden:
I got to the University and found out the Fireflies had moved on.  Then, you hear some people start yelling which means it's combat time.  I just shut the game off because I didn't want to deal with it

Put in another hour or so and decided that this game just isn't for me.  While the story and characters are well done (although not nearly as engaging as I'd heard), the actual gameplay ended up being far more frustrating than fun.  Add in a post-apocalyptic/zombie setting that I didn't find interesting at all, and it really never clicked.

It's a pretty remarkable technical achievement and I can absolutely see why others would love it though.  Glad I gave it a look.

I'm having this problem myself.  It's like the fact that the story and characters are so nicely done is just making me hate the combat.  I'm at the university and I just can't seem to get myself to play much.  Anytime combat comes up, I just want to turn the game off.  I was thinking about why a game like this causes me issues, but I had no such issue with Bioshock Infinite, which also had great characters and story and also had enemy arenas just like this.  I think the difference is that with Bioshock, since the combat isn't as realistic in that you can run and gun and you have the abilities as well, it made the combat more enjoyable.  With Last of Us, you have to hunker down behind cover and struggle with limited supply of ammo against enemies that can potentially take you down quickly and it just becomes a chore that I really want to get through to get to the cool part, which is the story.  But it's hard to get to the next cool story thing when there's combat in the way.  I keep telling myself to just put it on Easy and run through the combat, but the non-quitter in me seems to forbid me from doing that.  So, I'm at this weird standstill where I can't bring myself to finish the game and I can't make myself do the thing that will most likely make me finish it.

You have this vast wealth of hardware experience. You've been making controllers, keyboards and mice for the better part of three decades.

Yes they do, but from my experience they've haven't been particularly good at it. I've yet to own a piece of MS hardware that wasn't deficient or prematurely defective. And that includes non-gaming hardware form many moons ago, like the 80286 CPU upgrades they manufactured in the 80's. Even their mice and keyboards have been a disappointment for me. If you're wanting a decent fighter stick for the XB1, I wouldn't count on MS delivering it.

There was that one optical mouse!  Also, their XBox controllers have been pretty fantastic....I own like 4 of them and have not had an issue with any of them.

Are you guys running into little weird issues here and there?  I came back home after two weeks away, turned on my XBO, and went to turn on TV for my daughter.  No audio from TV.  I could heard the system noises just fine.  Powered down the XBO completely and all was well.  I run into bizarre little issues here and there like this.  For instance, had an issue where IR stopped working for turning on and off the XBO until I completely powered it down and then turned it back on.  Just curious if you guys are running into little bugs like this.

Yeah, like I said, everything looks great on the screen when it shows the camera view.  Not like there's a big black spot in the middle or something.  I could probably mess with moving the couches just to see if it improved, but ultimately I expected the new Kinect to work better in all environments.  So if it turned out to be the couches, I would be disappointed.

I would put in a call to MSFT. That doesn't sound right at all.

The only time my console can't detect me is if I'm lying down under the covers and I turn it on while prone. Otherwise it finds me pretty quickly and transitions between different controllers with no problems.

I do think my Day One controllers' RB is flaky. I'll be putting in a call.

It detects my other family members fine, though.  One thing I have is some big brown couches in a tight area and I have a feeling it throws it off some.  I know one time when I told it that it didn't recognize me and it brought up the screen showing where it thought I was, it was the top of a couch over to the right of me.  The camera image itself looks great, so I don't think  it is a camera defect.

More annoying than it not coming on when my daughter or someone else with a softer voice wants it to come on is the fact that the IR seems to die periodically.  I have to pull power from the XBox and do a cold boot and it starts right up working again.  Has only happened twice since I got it, but still annoying.  I chalk it up to issues with the Standby.  Game state is similarly wonky.  Resumed DR3 today and then it crashed.  I know that one is marked beta...don't think the system standby is marked as such, though, so I would expect IR not to go bye bye.

Also, oddly enough, my PS4 has much better success rate at detecting me in front of the camera than the XBO.

Was that import process smooth?  I know the PS Blog had an article on the process, but curious if it was easy enough that you don't even need to bother reading it.  They did make it sound like if you wanted a table to be available for PS3, that you should buy it on that version and import it over instead of buying on PS4 and trying to import to PS3.  I own most of the tables and honestly, I would probably never go back to playing the PS3 version, but I also like to do things the best way.

At this point, one outlier out of a sea of boredom means little. Although I'm hopeful it empowers them to go a little crazier with the next full console Zelda.

Then again, with with game coming out, I think that's happened in some weird way.

Given what Anouma has been saying about the Wii U Zelda to come out and what we saw with the 3DS version, I think the next Zelda will also shake things up quite a bit.  That being said, I never get tired of even the normal Zelda formula, so maybe I'm not the best judge.

I honestly don't care about the NPDs.  What I would like to know is global sales for both platforms.

That's more straightforward. From memory, I believe the PS4 claimed 2.1 million sold worldwide in 18 days, and Xbox One claimed 2 million in 19 days. Or something like that.

or maybe from the post above:

Quote from: Caine on December 13, 2013, 05:30:42 PM

yeah, it is disengenous to say 'higher average in Nov'.  compare the first month if you want to be honest about it. instead, let's look at what they've told us or NPD.

It was reported that PS4 sold 2.1 mil in November, over 17 days.  MS sold 2 mil XB1 in 19 days.  that works out to ~123,529 and ~105,263.

Yeah, I saw that, but it's been a couple of weeks now since November ended.  I want up-to-date, which I realize I won't be able to have.  One thing it does seem from just watching reports of the consoles coming in stock is that MS seems to be winning the war on having product in stock.  I think it's helped them in keeping the numbers close to Sony.  Also, I think people, now that the thing is out, are forgetting about all the bad press MS made for themselves and just getting the console because it actually seems pretty good.  It certainly has its issues (for some reason the dumb thing never wants to sign me in, but it signs the other members of my family in just fine and I keep telling it that it didn't recognize me), but I think the features it came with that separate it from Sony work well in practice (especially once you learn how they intended you to interface with it).
