121  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PC/360/PS3] Dark Souls on: February 11, 2014, 12:46:21 AM
Gonna bring this one back from the grave.  I absolutely love this game and Demon's Souls, but for some reason I had gotten distracted from both and then when I went back to them, was afraid I wasn't going to remember how to play and the mechanics and all the craziness that went with it.  So, fly forward in time to a few weeks ago and I decided that I wasn't going to let that stop me.  So, I beat Demon's Souls last night and Dark Souls just now and I feel like a king!  I had basically worked on Dark Souls until I got to the part where you unlock the final boss (I think when I picked things back up again, I had just finished the boss in Anor Londo) and then played Demon's Souls until I beat it last night (when I picked it up, I think I had done a couple of parts of World 1,2, and 3, the first part of 4 and none of 5).  I'd love to go and play New Game+, but too many games to be played.  This is the type of game I wish I had back in college when I could only afford a game or two as I would have just played it over and over like I did with A Link to the Past and Super Mario World on the SNES.  Anyway, just on a Souls high and wanted to share.

Impressions please.

Can do, but there's a demo on the store.  In fact, if you play it, you keep your progress for the real game, so it's apparently the beginning of the game.  It's basically a Monster Hunter clone.  I've had fun with the demo, so figured I would buy the full thing.

As far as my town goes, I didn't get a chance to get to that point in the game this morning. But I did add all the listed codes into my 3DS (so it'll fully 'friend' you all once you friend me). Once I get back home and a bit further into the game, I'll be able to update my town stuff and whatever.

And it sounds like that your town info goes into Squenix's central server once you upload it - so there's no need to be online at the time.

When I go to add you, it acts like you didn't already add me.

Toukiden: The Age of Demons
Lightning Returns (got the CE...yes, I am the only person who likes the FFXIII series)

Actually, looks like you guy's aren't.  I will throw my code in here.  To get to this, go to the square smiley face icon on the normal 3DS screen that is up in the top middle and in there, go to your own Mii and your code is there.  Mine is:  3050-7587-6694.  Once in there, click on the icon with the plus on it to add people.  Start punching in codes that hopefully you guys will post in here and once a pair of people enter the codes, they are considered friends.

I have no idea where to find my Friend Code, though. icon_frown

I'm in the same boat.  If anyone is DS capable (unlike Autistic Demon and I), please let us know how to go about doing this.

Wonder Twins are in bed, and I've only got Little B 4.11 to go before I can fire this up.  I even blew the dust off my DS last night and made sure it was charged up.  smile  Pretty excited to finally give it a go.

I think it is done through the normal 3DS friend code.  Then when you go to Add Friends via Internet, it goes out and look for those who have Bravely Default as well.  For two systems to be friends, both have to have invited each other.  I will look in the 3DS thread in Multiplayer to see if you guys are maybe there.

Downloaded it last night and loaded it this morning to get my demo goodies.  Looking forward to playing it today.  Basically watched cut scenes until I could save.
129  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Annual Installments discussion on: February 04, 2014, 02:58:19 PM
For sure.  Being on a yearly cycle doesn't give you the luxury of being able to do much.  We've seen it even with non-story type games such as the EA Sports titles.  I don't like the GTA series, so it wouldn't matter to me if it went to a year or 10 years (same with Call of Duty), but something like Assassin's Creed could benefit from even going to once every other year.  From a business sense, though, it makes complete sense why they do this.

I think Madden could benefit from having a new game every other year and the year in between a roster update, but they'll make less money in the end and there's no way they'll do it.

Anyone know if there is a way to tell if a game patch was downloaded?  I see notifications and I see games and apps, so I guess those were the last to get updated?  Is there a way to tell what version?  Any patch notes?  Any idea how you can tell when the patch was grabbed?

Yeah, same here for me when the Saints won theirs.  A team I watched growing up who didn't even have a winning season until 1987 won a Super Bowl and I just kind of watched stunned because who would have ever thought that would happen?

I think the reason it isn't a Final Fantasy game is so that people don't get confused.  Really if it was Final Fantasy 15 (16?) and then you saw Final Fantasy 13 - Lightning Returns next to it at the store wouldn't you be confused?  I would.  They seem like completely different types of games.  Heck they are different types of games so I can see how if Square decided "Final Fantasy" would now be what we see with Lightning Returns they needed a new name for the classic Final Fantasy type of game.

Yeah, I guess since it is its own story, that makes sense.  They also could have potentially set it in the XIII world, had some cameos from Lightning, and made it a FF game.  At any rate, I have been very stoked for this game.  Almost time to come out!

Thanks for the tips!!  It is interesting how they use all the FF conventions/classes and spell names, but don't call it an FF game, was there a reason for that?

You know, I'm not sure.  As much as I love Final Fantasy, I guess I am kind of glad they did it this way.  People won't moan that FF sucks these days (I personally loved the XIII series), you get a new universe that they could potentially grow and it all feels like an old Final Fantasy game...everyone wins!

I finally downloaded the demo last night (side note: wtf is up with consoles these days?  to get the demo had to update the system, create an account, create a Mii, link the account, verify via email, etc etc back and forth just to get access to download.  If I was a kid I would have been crying or lost patience way before I got to play.)

Back to the demo - game looks like a lot of fun, particularly the job system.  Combat seems really tough, and clearly you aren't meant to wander into some places before you are ready lol.  I don't know if I did something wrong or what, but I spent most of my cash on Cura, but no one seems able to cast it.  So I'm kind of screwed it seems - I'm shifting to Easy difficulty until I figure out what's going on.

To be fair, that process you went through is a one time thing that came with the Miiverse for 3DS update.  You'll not have to do it again.

In order to use Cura, you need to have someone have the job of either Red Mage or White Mage, the Job Command in abilities set to WHM or RDM, and then that particular job (WHM or RDM) has to have been leveled up to the level that allows you to use Cura (which is not the first level version of that spell, so if you are just starting out, just buy Cure).

Also, start out by going to the west (but get some experience by just battling the stuff in the general overworld.  The other directions are harder.  The area to the northeast is the second area you are meant to go to, and the area south is the last.  Basically, follow the quests (you can get one at a time) and that will kind of guide you where you need to go.

I like the approach they are taking with the enemy henchmen and the system of followers.

Yeah, that video makes the game look cool.  Not sure why they felt they needed the LOTRO license (other than it maybe guarantees some purchases on it alone and they have the license), but this also would have been cool in its own universe.  I am definitely interested in it.

Unless you're talking about some other roughing the kicker penalty (I was only able to watch the second half of the game), I think it was running into the kicker and was called correctly as the 5-yard kind.

Yeah, can't wait to find out what the deal with all that is.  Was a surprise to me as well.  Oh man...and you just made me think a little more about it and I just realized something...

Spoiler for Hiden:
When you're going to lift the creatures with the spaceship...that's you picking up the maidens.  Now, I'm trying to remember...did one of your missions seem to match her escaping from you?  I think when I ended the game, I was so shocked that he was inside the creature that it didn't occur to me to think more about what that might mean.

Could be.  It seems like Kinect has issues seeing me at times, for whatever reason.  The room it is in is usually fairly dark.

none of this stuff happens to me, no idea how yours is doing it.

If I'm watching something and my fiance walks in, it just has a pop up that says 'Hi Happy!' (her name on there) at the bottom, but everything continues as it should.

Just did a Google search on the subject and first reply was:

Quote
I set my wife up a profile so she can have her own favorites/pins/etc. I'd like kinect to auto sign her in too. That works fine, but there is a problem. I'll be mid match in killer instinct and she will walk in to the room and it will detect her and immediately switch to her profile... Killer instinct says profile changed so it must immediately return to the main menu... Shouldn't it just sign her in in the background or something? I have the controller in my hand, so shouldn't I stay as active profile? Is there a setting I'm missing? Thanks! -VK

Others saying they have the same issue in reply.  Looks like you have to turn of Kinect auto-sign-in for people to fix it.  I guess I expected it would just sign them in when they walk in and that's it...not actually switch over to their profile.
150  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Xbox One Discussion on: January 16, 2014, 03:26:25 PM
This box sure likes to do some goofy things sometimes.  Was watching a video on YouTube and my son walked in the room.  It logged him in and switched to his YouTube profile, killing the video I was watching.  I then switched back to my profile, but it wouldn't switch back to my YouTube profile, so I had to go to the home, kill the YouTube app, and then relaunch it.  Why did someone think it was a good idea to switch profiles just because someone else walked into the room?

I actually bet they made the decision because if you could kill women in the game, they were worried that feminist groups would cry foul that this was a woman murder simulator.

A less cynical approach might say that the types of assholes that would get together and hunt other survivors are the same types of assholes that might rape and/or kill women, so it's kind of an all-boys club.
155  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Orbis. aka PlayStation 4? The rumors are put to rest. on: January 10, 2014, 04:44:22 PM
Obviously the creator of the comic is not very smart since they can't really see the difference there.  XBox was making all games (including discs) require a connection.  Sony is having PS3 games (not PS4 games) need a connection to stream them (which how else could you possibly stream them, unless you are on the Internet).  If Sony was making this a requirement for PS4 games, then they'd be doing the same as MS.

I played Proteus to "completion" and I don't quite get the praise on that one.  I liked that it was procedurally generated and it was neat to roam around, but it didn't do much for me.

I've played all the games on that list and loved them all.  I've beaten all of them except for Papers, Please and Gunpoint, but will get around to it.

Lordnine, trying to figure out why you hate Dear Esther with a passion.  I can understand it not being your thing or being indifferent about it and it's really just you pushing your character through the entire experience (which is also the same for Gone Home, though you get a little more interaction), but not sure how you can hate it with a passion.

Managed to beat the game last night.  Got really frustrated during the last combat sequence as I just kept dying over and over.  Times when I thought I should have gotten a stealth kill, I didn't and head shots with the assault rifle weren't resulting in quick kills.  Luckily toward the end, I had enough flamethrower ammo to just kind of end it all.  Enjoyed the ending, but my overall impression of this GOTY (for many) is it's not my GOTY for sure, but I enjoyed the characters and story.
