Sorry, should have posted this in Off-Topic.  Gonna post there as well and not wait for the move just in case someone is interested.
122  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Anyone going to PAX East? on: April 10, 2014, 01:05:22 PM
So, I was supposed to go to PAX East with a friend who lives in the northeast. I am flying from Denver and he was going to drive to Boston and pick me up and we were staying at a hotel in Woburn, MA that I used to stay at when I worked for a company HQed in Woburn that was only $99 a night. He just cancelled on me and so now I am trying to figure out what I want to do. I just rented a car for $174 for the duration of the trip (I am there from Thursday night through Sunday night) as cabbing it all those days is going to be more expensive, even with gas and parking.

So, now I need to decide if I want to go to this thing solo. I've been to PAX Prime the last seven years and am thinking it won't be much fun being alone out there. So, I was thinking if maybe some GTer was gong to PAX East, we could hang out.  Since my flight is in almost 6 hours, I should probably go pack if I'm going to go.  I guess I am going to go.  Not sure if anyone lives in the Boston area and wasn't planning on going....if so, I have a free 3-day pass if you want.  PM if interested in that.  If you're already going to PAX and wouldn't mind hanging out with me, you can reply here.

And maybe it's just the OCD gamer in me, but I can't imagine leaving huge areas of the maps unexplored.  For me, the chance of finding that legendary item tucked over in a remote corner is a huge part of the draw of these games.

I think the odds are just as good that you'd find it in the next area.

Ah, ok.  Mine is @TheGrue then.

2.  I've tried Enchanting with the Mystic twice now, paying between $25K and $50K to replace properties.  On both occasions, of the two replacements I was offered, one was fairly worthless (something like "increase gold pickup by 1 yard) and the other was the exact same one I just paid to replace.   Roll Eyes  Needless to say, I don't think I'll be using that feature very often.

Don't give up on this.  You're going to get bad results sometimes, but you'll also get good ones.  I've gotten some wonderful replacements for useless stats.

Also, Act V is not the main attraction of this expansion.  Get through it (I just did it on Normal to rush through) and unlock Adventure Mode.  This is where the expansion shines.

Yeah, wasn't sure if Paragon levels kept scaling that up or not.  They were almost 100 Paragon levels over me.  I will probably just open a game and hope people join.

You can get a stack of them for finishing a Nephalem Rift.

Yeah, ended up getting some that way last night.  I was level 65 and joined a group doing Torment 1 rifts and I think we did 4 of them and I got to level 70 and had a nice chunk of them.  They were in their mid-100s Paragon levels and I was barely damaging monsters and could die very easily.  Not sure if paragon levels come into play when the monsters are generated, but I was playing Torment 1 before Reaper came out and able to play just fine, but now it's too tough for me.  Will have to either find groups that are as patient or play on lower difficulties until I get geared up again.

You get them in Adventure Mode when you collect bounties.

Do you have to do all the bounties in an Act to get them?  I've done a bounty here and there and have not gotten a shard yet.

I have an apple time capsule that has the build in airport express.  I set my Vita to not connect directly to the PS4 and it still is awful.  All of the computers here and cell phones and tablets all get 20 mb/s+.  PS4 is also wired with LAN cable.  If I leave the room that my PS4 is in, then during remote play the vita gets pixelated and drops the connection.  For me, the application is basically useless.  I can't use the Vita to remote from my bedroom, which is directly above the playstation.  Not 10 feet difference.

That's okay.  I get weird lag here and there even connected directly to the PS4 and right in the room.  Not sure if it's interference with the other wifi-enabled devices I have all around the PS4 or what.  Wii U does it to me as well, some times.

Are you playing with the unlocked sphere grids so you can experiment more with your character builds, or do you fall into the camp of people who believe that just removes the safeguards preventing you from hobbling your party?

-Autistic Angel

I went with the standard grid.  Partly because I didn't want to accidentally gimp my characters, and partly because the unique roles each character plays is a big part of the story.  Messing with that and making Yuna a melee fighter or Kimahri a healer would just mess with the core of the game, IMHO.

This is exactly why I went with Standard.  I think I had started to play this on PS2 but got rid of my PS2 and didn't play very much of it back at the time.  However, I have no memory of the beginning of this game...for some reason I remember it starting on a beach or something and it starts in a city.  At any rate, anxious to play both of these HD remakes to play these two games I never played.  So far, they look good on Vita.

I got prompted by my XB1 for at least the second update.  I think the USB cable has to be attached for it to realize the controller is out of date.  (but yeah, it's still ridiculous they can't detect your firmware version wirelessly)

How does one update their controller?

You need a USB to micro adapter.  Plug the controller into the XBox (USB port is on the back, unless I just didn't see one on the front and it's there).  Go to Settings and the go to System.  Choose Update Controller in the bottom left controller.  Kind of ridiculous that they do controller firmware upgrades but don't have a great way to notify people.  I had heard it was coming and then forgot about it.  I think some podcast reminded me I could update it.

How "punishing"/hardcore is it compared to the original game?

So far, and I am still early, I think I died twice.  One right at the beginning when I tried punching a rat thing and then a bunch more I didn't see came running.  Then I died another time trying to get a shiny that was too far of a drop.  Other than that, I am doing great, but I just recently beat both Dark Souls and Demons Souls.  My time with Dark Souls made Demons Souls easier and I think that stays true with Dark Souls 2.  If you've got some experience with the game, you know what to look out for.  I will say that combat has felt different and tricks I tried in the other games with melee didn't seem to work as well here.  But, in this game, I went with a magic user to just do something different, so I tend to just soul arrow things.

I'm loving it a whole lot.  Really has grabbed me and in general, I like the changes.  I don't like how you can't see how a weapon or piece of armor from a merchant will raise your stats.  Really dumb thing to not include.  Not like I usually buy that stuff from merchants as I usually rely on drops, but just seems a huge oversight.  The game definitely has that Dark Souls addiction pulling at me.  I went with a magic user this time, which I hadn't done in the previous two games.  Will be interesting to see how things differ.

Oh, one change which I am not so sure about yet as I haven't run into it, but thinking about it, not sure I like is that enemies will only respawn so many times.  So you can't just farm over and over and over.

I have more than enough toughness to survive T3, but man me dps is a bit behind.  Probably need to group and tank.

Did you have bonus xp in your pool?  There are shrines that give +25% until you die and you can keep adding to it with more shrines.  Not sure that gets you up to the level you were talking about, though.

This is a cross post, because I'm wondering if this applies to Xbone yet (and hoping that it will).  Otherwise, it seems a little late in the game, but it's better than nothing.

Phil Spencer: Games with Gold will feel 'more true' to what consumers want in the future

Here's one insteresting tidbit that never occurred to me:

Quote
"One of our issues with Games with Gold not 'issues,' but differences between the other system we get compared to, is the fact that with Games with Gold, you get to keep that game, regardless of whether you continue to subscribe," Spencer said. "And the business around Games with Gold, for us, is just fundamentally different from some of the other programs that are out there, which does put a different financial picture on a you're gonna go buy a game that's brand new, the cost of putting that in, just to be kind of blunt about it."

OTOH, while I'm sure it would be a challenge to change the infrastructure to such a degree, I'm not sure why they don't make it so that this is not an issue with GwG.

Still, good to hear that better options will be coming.  Is GwG on Xbone yet?

Gee, MS...thanks for letting me keep those ancient games if I stop subscribing to Live.  I don't even pay attention to what they offer anymore because the games they've offered have just been so old.  I'll not be dropping my PS+ subscription ever, so I never have to worry about losing the games.  Too much value in the subscription.

Really enjoying the new patch.  I've played a ton of it when I haven't played this game in forever.  Trying to get the last piece I need for the Staff of Herding.  Got Chiltara to spawn, but it dropped a legendary instead of the piece I needed. frown  I think I was something like level 55 when I started playing again and am now up to Paragon 20.  I'm just playing on Hard right now to get through the story, get the achievements for killing the bosses (which I guess are new or reset or something, because I already beat the game a couple of times and yet am still getting these achievements).  Then, I think I will try playing on Torment as Hard is super easy.  We'll see if the gear I am getting will help me survive, although I only have 6 legendaries equipped.

I wish this were true, but I pay for a TV service and am given tons of ads.  I pay for a magazine and am given tons of ads.  I used to get all riled up about ads on the 360, but then remembered that they're not the only place that gives me ads when I pay for it.

It did, but I think it's not there any more because it's on by default.  Also if you have energy savings on you can NOT use 'Xbox turn on' because the system actually turns off when you turn it off instead of suspending to await downloads and voice commands.

What settings do you run with in that regard?

It was definitely a beta feature and definitely was shitty. Maybe they think its better with the new update?

I don't believe it changes the Xbox On functionality... I think its specific to game quick starts.

The description for Energy Saving Mode vs. Quick Start says that Quick Start enables update downloads, XBox On, and turning on your TV box.  Maybe someone who has it on Energy Save can comment on whether you can turn it on with voice?

I don't think that was the beta feature... it was something to do with game suspending.

Game suspending is a checkbox you can check or uncheck if you have Instant On enabled.  I could have sworn it said Beta next to it in the past.

I think it used to say Beta next to one of the options, but doesn't anymore.  I just checked the setting I am talking about and it is Energy Savings Mode vs. Instant On.  Having it on Instant On seems to lead to all kinds of issues which I have to resolve by doing a power down.  The things I have had happen:

1) Games crashing when I try to load them, even if I am not resuming them from a previous power-on.
2) Video not displaying.
3) Sound not happening
4) Miscellaneous other minor things.

I went to go turn the feature off and I don't see Beta next to the feature anymore.  Or maybe that was only on the 5.1 passthrough thing and I am misremembering?  Reading about turning it off and it will get rid of the XBox On feature, which I know my family really likes.  I'm torn between having this thing be easy for them to use and having to deal with all the issues that seem to come with it.  Maybe at the very least I will turn the game suspend thing off, but thinking about it, my issue yesterday with Killer Instinct wasn't like I had suspended that game.  I was launching it for the first time in a long time and it crashed when trying to start it multiple times.  Makes me think the Quick Star is the culprit.

Other XBO users...have you guys pretty much turned this feature off or do you use it (Quick Start).  If  you use it, do you have glitches like this?  I doubt it's the hardware as it seems like a very software-based thing.  Especially since a full power down seems to fix any issue I ever run into.
