8201  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: The next 'Hot Coffee' - Manhunt 2 on: November 01, 2007, 02:46:30 PM
The 10 minute video was posted on GAF.  Maybe it was the fact that there was no context for the violence and there was no music or anything going on to make it seem dramatic, but that was probably the first time I looked at a video game and thought that the violence was inappropriate.  It's just one guy doing absolutely brutal things to another guy (well, lots of other guys, just one per scene) using pretty common objects like knives, shovels, crowbars and circular saws.

But there really isn't a lot of context, is there?  Isn't the object of the game basically to just sneak up on people and kill them?
8202  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: My (original) XBox DVD drive is screwed up on: October 29, 2007, 05:51:14 PM
Well, from looking around the net, I can get a new replacement drive for $50 shipped - I'm sure the boxes at GS are more than that.   What I'll probably wind up doing is asking for it for the holidays, which is kind of lame, but oh well.
8203  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / My (original) XBox DVD drive is screwed up on: October 29, 2007, 02:52:40 PM
Less than 3 years old and supposedly one of the "good" Samsung drives. Best I can tell from descriptions I have read, the tray is misaligned but I guess there could be more to it.  Drive tends to pop right back open when I close it, it makes a grinding noise when discs finally do load up, it freezes for periods during gameplay and the music often drops out. I found instructions on the net for realigning one of the older drive types, but I broke open the drive and the internals were a bit different on the Samsung. I've got us on an austerity budget now to pay down grad school loans so I can't really justify replacing it, especially since I have plenty of backlog on the PS2 and Wii. But I just ordered a copy of Splinter Cell 3 from an Amazon gift certificate I had won and now I can't play it.  crybaby

I've been trying to set aside some time for reading/listening to books because I have missed doing so.  Long car rides are good for that.

For the year:

July:
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

October:

On my last vacation I listened to:

Shadow Divers: The True Adventure of Two Americans Who Risked Everything to Solve One of the Last Mysteries of World War II by Robert Kurson

Also, in prep for the movie I re listened to:

The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman

I must say, my interest has been piqued.  In what ways would you say the United States government has become more effective, more efficient, more transparent, or otherwise raised its standards for performance since 2000?

I believe he was just pointing this out as a shot against the Bush administration and not the govt in general.

The Nintendo store is on the outskirts of Rockefeller Center.  Pretty neat place for a quick visit. When I was there they had a display of what seemed like every possible variation of the GBA for all over the world.

My dad used to work in White Plains - there is a White Plains Galleria that I would assume has a GameStop or something.

edit - yes, there is a GameStop there.

8213  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [Super Metroid] Am I just dumb? on: October 02, 2007, 01:34:17 AM
So I fired up Super Metroid for the first time, got the morph ball and started exploring.  I wind up dropping down into a cavern that appears to only have an exit with a red door, which I don't have the right beam to open yet.  I go back the way I came and...hey, I can't get back up!

I am just missing something or are there complete dead ends in this game that require a reboot of the machine?

I didn't want to go look at a guide yet until I verified that this is not just a "feature".

Yeah, I don't understand this whole cell phone game craze coming out of Japan - they are actually releasing a cell phone version of Resident Evil 4.  Does everyone in Japan have phones with the exact same operating system or something?  I don't even understand what phones cell phone games run on.  Is it all Symbian or something?

Here's a bit from IGN on the limitations of the GBA cart:

Quote
In terms as a Super NES port, the Game Boy Advance pulls off most of the original game's levels extremely well. It has some issues with camera scroll due to its lower screen resolution. The GBA developers kept the art assets at a one-to-one ratio, but because the GBA does not have as much height or width resolution, the visible screen area is a bit less than what was intended by the original level designers. The GBA programmers attempted to remedy this issue by using a "smart" camera system that scrolls the view up or down when players need to see above or below them. But it's not perfect, and players will have to move Yoshi in specific directions in order to see the blind edges. The slowdown also needs to be mentioned...it's not terrible, but it is obvious when it happens.

But they still gave it a 9.4

Yup. Just avoid the crappy GBA port.

What is bad about the GBA version? On Wikipedia it seems to imply the game was virtually untouched in the port, other than some shoe color changes and the addition of some bonus levels.

Also, I am confused by Yoshi's Island DS, which I have.  Was this a slight modification of the original Yoshi's Island, where they added in the new babies, sort of like how you start out as Yoshi in Super Mario 64 DS?  Or are the levels brand new and different?
8219  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: If you could only play one 2D Mario game, which would it be? on: September 26, 2007, 12:37:45 PM
So the most votes so far are for Super Mario World, followed closely by SM3. SM3 is not on VC yet and SMW is, although there is the GBA version of SM3.
8220  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: If you could only play one 2D Mario game, which would it be? on: September 25, 2007, 11:20:54 PM
People seem to be skewing (until the last couple of posters) to the NES games.  Did they not improve on the SNES? I guess that would be the "World/Land" games?

8222  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / If you could only play one 2D Mario game, which would it be? on: September 25, 2007, 09:25:05 PM
The only side-scrolling Mario game I have ever played (and I haven't finished it yet) is Yoshi's Island DS.  There are too many Mario games - if you were to choose 1 of the side-scrolling 2D Mario games across all the systems (NES, SNES, GB, GBA, DS), which would be the most fun?

I know that leaves a lot to personal preference, so I will leave this as a guide - extreme difficulty is a big minus, and some semblance of a story is a plus (although I know story is pretty rare in Mario games).

Only thing I played this weekend was Super Mario Sunshine. Got up to the final boss, but lost, so I'm going to have to go through the final level again to get back to him.  I just want to get it done with and put that game aside forever, because it frustrates me to no end.  I'm really surprised I kept with it - luckily you only need a fraction of the shines to beat the game and there is little to no reward for getting all the shines.

My ISP via warnings they received from Paramount (episode of Enterprise of all things) and Universal (for an episode of Heroes).

My ISP via...well, whoever owns Quantom Leap (wanted to grab them all for my brother one day).

I guess RCN just doesn't care.  Most recently I downloaded about 10 episodes of Lost without a peep. (and they have never peeped before).

Gah, that makes me nervous. I hope I'm not downloading a 2.5GB virus  paranoid
I'm guessing he's referring to getting sued by the RIAA.

That's exactly what I meant. I've gotten my one warning (because I dared to download a 15 year old TV program that just happened to be coming to DVD a year later, and didn't know about it at the time), and at that point I put off using a method to download stuff that people can VERY easily track.

Newsgroups for the win! biggrin

Yeah, I've received two warnings for downloading TV shows.  I haven't heard of the networks suing anybody but it was enough to turn me away.  The scary thing is that there ware people torrenting pretty much all of their TV without issue and I only do it on the very rare occasion I forgot to Tivo something and I get busted twice.

I'm curious - who did the warning come from?

That's why I no longer purchase from them (after having lost a slew of purchased music in a HDD crash).

Well...it has been reported that Apple will let you download your library one time if you ask nicely (story was on Digg).  But obviously, stuff ripped from CD, you're SOL.
