I forgot about something interesting that I ran across yesterday.  If you are on the internet and you go to the LCPD page, there is a link to the LPCD database at the bottom. There's no spoilers I don't think, but a police record for every "badguy" character in the game, as well as a few who you wouldn't necessarily expect to find in there.

Well, you miss the whole rest of the story! Even though you have already rescued Princess Peach and beaten Bowser, he somehow manages to capture her again and you are forced to beat him again. Yet it seems an awful lot like deja vu.  It's all very deep and nuanced.

Yeah, the fact that Toad's letter from Peach doesn't change one bit after you rescue Peach (namely, that she's still captured and sending 1-ups from her cell) struck me as odd.  Nintendo doesn't generally let such obvious and easily-addressed oddities through QA.

I would guess they would suggest that at the point you beat Bowser for the first time, you are zapped back into some kind of alternate timeline where you have yet to beat Bowser and there's even more stuff to do.  But it would have made much more sense to just let you play the extra levels and trigger a minor cutscene and credits when you got to 120.  Having to go back and beat Bowser was kind of dumb.

The one problem with Labs is that they are so darn happy all the time, they wind up getting themselves in these messes. Who cares about my paws, I'm having fun! smile  My sister-in-law's Lab got so happy swimming once that she sprained her tail.  No joke.  That was a rough recovery.

If anyone is trying for the $500K achievement, I highly recommend doing Stevie's car requests.  You can pick up a lot of money that way. I'd already be at $500K if I hadn't wasted a bunch on medical care.  I still don't understand why your medical bills go up when you have more money. I have about $420K now and still 15 or 16 cars to get. With what I'll probably get from missions, it shouldn't be too long.

Wow, I just played through a short sequence of great missions.

Spoiler for Hiden:
First, the choice to snipe either Francis or the other brother - I chose to kill Francis, because I felt that's what Niko would do. We'll see if that has any repercussions down the road. Then the awesome funeral shootout and chase. Followed up by "I'll Take Her..." The way that the daughter's grabbing of the wheel affected the controls was a great touch.

I've also noticed that my friends have caught on to my attempt to spend as little time as possible with them by always going for food. I've called up a few of them and they've complained that I'm trying to get them fat and asked me to call back later.

You know, I was also just thinking of something today.  Other than the mission that you have to use one, has anyone used the car washes?  I've never really gotten a car to sell that was dirty, so I'm not really clear what they are for.

I must say that Kiki's perk is a godsend.  This game would be a whole lot harder without it.  I have already dumped Carmen because her stupid perk never works, but Kiki allowed me to finish Tunnel of Death on the first try and breeze through the ends of a bunch of other missions.

The funny thing about Tunnel of Death:

Spoiler for Hiden:
You help Packie do all this damage and then after you finish off the dirty work, he hops into your car and ditches you there!
8210  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: The Multi-Platform Juggle (Gaming Gluttony?) on: May 16, 2008, 05:16:56 PM
This is what backwards compatibility is great for.  I've retired my GameCube because I have a Wii.  I'm pretty near to retiring my XBox - I have a couple of games that aren't BC for the 360, and I've kind of decided if they weren't important enough for me to drop everything else and play them before, they're fine to get rid of. With multi-player and new fangled graphics and gameplay, there's enough benefit to play newer games to simply cut my losses on older ones. My plan is to get a PS3 this holiday season, and hopefully I'll be able to retire my PS2 then, depending on what Sony has up its sleeve with regards to BC. Again, not that I'm likely to be playing many PS2 games in the future. PSP and DS I tend to only play when I travel, which isn't too often, so I am getting rid of anything that hasn't clicked with me.  PC is a bit of a lost cause with me.  I have an older PC, but still have a box of games I'd like to play.  Those will probably just hang there a while, and I don't really consider the PC part of my backlog.

I guess the question you have to ask yourself is, will you have "regrets" for not playing some games.  Personally, I feel best if I have a couple of games that I haven't finished that I can go to, but don't have lots languishing around.  If I never get to play some games, so be it - at least the money hasn't gone to waste.

Correct.

The very first time I made it to the house (the first time I pointed the car the wrong way in the Burger Shot and he lost me), I made it in the house, shot everyone except the last guy and then he blew me away as I was walking upstairs to get him.  The police hadn't shown up, and I was that close to finishing the darn mission on the second try.  However, every other time I tried it I kept alerting the police and wound up getting shot from the back and front at the same time.  I think the trick is 1) wear a vest, which would have solved my problem the first time and 2) charge the porch and shotgun the guys outside as quickly as possible to try to avoid the cops showing up, or at least so you can get inside quickly.  Because if you can get inside and take everyone out, you can always call Kiki.

Had to pop in and update my impressions here after 6 mo with the game.  Still loving it.  I beat the game several months ago and put it down for a bit both due to Brawl/Kart/etc and to take a break and let the 'freshness' come back.  It worked.  I'm now up to 99 stars and am still having a blast.

I've never been a platformer pro, and I definitely am teh suck on some of these harder levels.  I suck at swimming, and the cosmic mario race through the water is kicking my ass.  I'm also not sure I'll ever get Purple Coins on the Battlerock, or the purple coin ice one with the series of jumps you need to nail perfectly or lose the ice suit.  But I'm going to get as far as I can... smile

If you are willing to give it some time, there is a very fun part to getting all the purple coins on the ice level. However, if you are not fully committed to getting 120, steer clear of Luigi's Purple Coins.  It will make you hate life.

Wow, did I have a brutal GTA IV session last night.  I got on with the intention of quickly getting done with "3 Leaf Clover" because I had tried it 3 or 4 times unsuccessfully.  An hour and 45 minutes later, I finally finished the stupid mission.  Some of the highlights:

1. Getting killed while jacking a car to drive to the bank
2. Getting killed in the alleys because I didn't realize a cop had run right up next to me
3. Getting killed in the subway station
4. Getting killed getting the getaway car
5. Losing the mission because I walked too far away from Packie and the other guy!
6. Damaging my car so much on the way to the bank that it simply stopped working on the bridge's on-ramp.  It didn't catch on fire, it simply stopped and wouldn't start up again.  I had to get out of the car and jack someone else's car.  Luckily my accomplices followed.

Then I did the mission with Packie's brother (when you meet him in the park) and proceeded to stupidly get myself killed about 5 times, and I still haven't finished the mission.

Outside of managing to finish "Clover", the most productive thing I accomplished in the game over the 2 hours was boost my ratings with Kiki, LJ, Roman and Brucie.  crybaby

I wouldn't be surprised if they did. But I checked through GoGamer entirely and came up with nothing.

I have a set that has Baldur's Gate, Planescape Torment and Fallout 2, all with full color maps and printed manuals.  I don't think it was meant for distribution in the US, but Gogamer was selling it for a while.  Sadly, the best I have done is get past disc 1 of BG a couple of times and about 30 minutes of Planescape.  I have a huge backlog of top-flight older PC games that I just have never managed to get going on - BG2, all the Mysts, Fallout, Ghost Recon, NOLF 1&2, Monkey Island 3&4...

For LJ's package missions short cuts definitely help if you can find them (though I don't think I needed it on the first package mission).  One thing I didn't know, however, is that evidently you don't have to use the junkers he leaves you with.  Supposedly you can hop into your own quicker and better handling vehicle and still complete the missions.

I thought the package was in the car? If I get in and get out do I bring the package with me?

yep

Now you tell me.  I did them all with the default car.  Although I only had a problem with one of the timed ones where you have to deliver the package to a guy under an overpass.  I kept sliding around trying to get in there, and he'd leave, but I finally did it.

I've tried it on mission and off multiple times and have never noticed anything changing.

There are posts out there that says its a bug, but nothing official that I can find.

You know what suddenly struck me as I was walking down the steps to my office?  GTAIV accurately models walking down steps.  It actually has annoyed me in-game because you always slow down when you hit steps, but I can't recall another game that has a realistic animation when walking down steps.  Is there?

8230  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Burnout Paradise : retail version impressions on: May 12, 2008, 07:43:24 PM
There's no thread for impressions of the retail version, so...

I finally got online with this the other night with a bunch of friends and it was a blast. There was 5 of us, so we spent most of our time doing the 5 person challenges, and in between challenges we were experimenting with stunts (seeing who could do the best flatspin or if we could fly over the crane in the airfield, etc.), and the time just flew by.  The online is going to get so much better in June when they add Marked Man, Stunt Run and Road Rage to the online events, because while the challenges are a lot of fun, once you are done with them, you've lost some guidance in what to do during your session.  The racing definitely has its weaknesses, but I'm ok with that because the other stuff is so much fun.  If I want to race I can always play a different game.

The one thing that is little silly about the challenges is the restriction by number of people.  If you have 5 friends online together and you want to work on your 4 person challenges you have to send someone packing or just not do them.  They are adding 70 more challenges in the June release as well, which is great.  With cycles and new islands, this game should stay in our multiplayer rotation for a while.

Playing this on Saturday night actually pulled me away from GTA on Sunday because I got the urge to go in and make some more progress.  I'm now 51% done, with 39 cars. I've found all the billboards and crashes (without a guide, yay me!), but I have so far been unable to find the very last super jump in White Mountain and also am missing 1 event, which is surprising because I figure I must have gone through every intersection on the map by now.  Right now I'm concentrating on doing all the Burning Routes for the cars I have, which will should leave me with a lot less regular events to do to get my Burnout License.

I think when you get a call during a mission it's part of the mission.  For example, during "Have a heart", Little Jacob calls up to go do something, but I think the purpose was just for Niko to tell a joke.  I didn't see the "minus" icon for Jacob show up.  However, if you get a call on the way to a race or optional thing then you will get dinged if you turn the person down.

There was also a Rampart cabinet in one of the dining halls.  I have gotten to the arcade more in the past 7 or 8 years because now there are places like Dave and Busters and Jillians, but it's hard to call any of those new games favorites. They are more about giving you an experience you can't get on a console (firehoses, moving cabinets, etc.) and once you are paying over a dollar to play a game it starts to get a little silly. I did have an 8 person race with friends in one of those linked together racing games in Vegas one time - that was fun.

How much do we still rely on artillery?  We have a lot more ability to use offshore missles and guns and air support now.  It's probably a lot cheaper, though.

OK, my standbys were:

Rolling Thunder
Elevator Action
Marble Madness
Crystal Castle
Paperboy
720
RoboCop
(although I couldn't never get very far - I just loved RoboCop)
10 Yard Fight
NARC
(because it was just funny with the flying syringes and so on)
Galaga

oh, and Tron.
oh wait, and that one where you ride a motocross bike but you have to pull the handlebars up to make a jump. No idea what it was called.  There are too many.

That's interesting to know about "Medford Rum".  I lived in Medford for 6 years and never heard that it ever had anything to do with rum. Guess it's something that just faded away over time.  But they're right, the line they painted on the street to commemorate Revere's ride does go through Medford.

I would argue that Stuntman is a poor indicator of how much you'll like Stuntman Ignition.  From what I remember, there were some fairly hefty loading times for retries in the first one, and the stunts were very unforgiving.  Ignition removes the loading times, and the stunts are more forgiving.  I didn't like Stuntman, but loved Ignition.

OK, well, if I think that I would like it with easier stunts and shorter loading times, I will get Stuntman 2 smile

He's talking about Stuntman: Ignition on the Xbox 360, not Stuntman 2.

I think we're talking about the same thing.

Sorry I ignored the invite last night - I'm pretty absorbed in SP and I was pretty close to going to bed anyway.
