I'm putting this in a spoiler tag..though I don't know it to be true...yet...
Spoiler for Hiden:
I think Michelle is an INS agent or something...or she is just batshit insane.  I'm leaning towards INS....I mean ICE Agent...whatever they call themselves nowadays.

you know, that whole thing where everything in her apartment is new and she's secretive about her background...hmm, I have to play further to agree or disagree, but I like your train of thought

Yeah, she also asks an awful lot of questions about Nico's friends and if they are into crime.  An interesting thought.

Oh BTW, even with GTA4 out I did manage to log on yesterday long enough to red dot my M60 and hit level 44.

Yes indeed. It was a wasteland for the non GTAIV group last night. All but two people were playing it.

I felt bad when I only saw ATB playing COD4 and everyone else on my friends list was GTA.  Did it take forever to find a game in COD?

These are the numbers from 360voice (is there that shows all player stats?)  The number in parentheses is difference from previous day:

1. Call of Duty 4
9,341 gamers ( -1,432)

2. GTA IV
8,282 gamers ( 7,841)

3. Halo 3
6,451 gamers ( -1,959)

4. Rainbow Six® Vegas 2
2,792 gamers ( -807)

We'll have to see what tomorrow's numbers look like, but COD4's hit was much smaller than GTA's gain.  I had no problem getting a game yesterday afternoon.  I think people who really want to play an FPS aren't going to bother with GTA.

EDIT:  Looks like those were 2 days old.  The site was updated with yesterday's actual numbers:

1. GTA IV
32,430 gamers ( 24,148)

2. Call of Duty 4
5,629 gamers ( -3,712)

3. Halo 3
4,086 gamers ( -2,365)

4. Rock Band
2,014 gamers ( -483)

A big hit to COD4's numbers, but still, it looks like there's a difference between the people who play the 2 games.

I have tried to play public matches on Live as recently as a couple of weeks ago, but I had an internet problem (that I finally remedied) so I would always stop playing after 1 or 2 rounds.  So I think that there are people playing, I'd just rather play with GT/OO/whatever people.

I'm a huge fan and have put in over 100 hours since release.  I've been playing less in the past month in anticipation of the new update, but alas GTA came before the update.  I'll be back in soon, though, I'm sure.

We definitely had a more active TF2 group on OO, but I don't know how many of them migrated to GT.  If you're looking for a mature group to play with, the Gamers with Jobs group is a top notch bunch and their server is my favorite place to play ever since meeting them in the OO vs. Gamers with Jobs match.

Server?  Are you talking PC?

I know most people (including myself) are fully entrenched in GTA and even COD4, but at some point I wouldn't mind giving this a spin.  Does anyone play?  Is it not GT-approved?

I'd love it if the game were able to recognize these things and Michelle would have kicked Nico to the curb after such an awful experience.

Yeah, I was trying to be careful because I thought it would turn her off, but it was unnecessary.  For example, I didn't realize a taxi had passengers even though it seemed to pull over for me when I called (I think it was actually the taxi behind it that stopped, and I think the dome light is the key to availability, like in real life) and I wound up jacking it.  Michelle just hopped in the passenger side and we took the fares for a ride to her apartment.

Also, when I chased the guy early on and he exited his vehicle I couldn't find him until I ran back and found some stairs I'd blown past thinking he'd run another way based on the mini-map. Oh. Okay. So this whole game, of which I can "do anything/go anywhere" only works if I complete missions based on the specific criteria set by the developers thereby limiting my imagination?

Rockstar, you fail.

Wait a sec.   You were in a footchase with someone, they ducked down a side alley and lost you so that you had to come doubling back, and you think that is unrealistic?      Or maybe I'm interpreting what you were describing wrong.

yeah, it seems odd to complain about the way that mission was handled just because you were not l33t enough to keep up with him and see him bail out of his car
 Tongue

(I fully reserve the right to be a hypocrite about this later)

If this is the same mission I am thinking of (catching the guy named "Darden" or something after you beat up his goons), there was actually a note on the screen that said "chase Darden up the stairs".

The taxi guy actually hears and brakes hard, screeching and sliding into a fire hydrant. He's now sitting on top of the broken hydrant going full blast under him. We both get in and the next second another car plows into the back of the taxi. The taxi driver gets out and engages in fisticuffs with the other guy, a chase ensues between the two, and we're both left sitting in the car going 'WTH'.

yeah, BTW, if you take a taxi, spring for the extra $$ to skip the trip.  The first time I got in a taxi I swear the cabbie must have gotten into 5 different accidents on the way to my destination.

Thanks for the recommendations guys. I'll check into everything mentioned. I still find it a bit odd that adults, and even men watch Degrassi.

I started watching Degrassi: TNG because I was a big fan of the original. I will say, if you are not at least somewhat open to a teen drama, it probably won't change your mind.  But it is much more compact and anti-MTV than anything you'll see on the CW. The thing I have always noticed is that they almost never use music in the background of any scene to pump up the emotion, and if they do, it's original, and not a "band of the week". If you do give it a chance, keep in mind that other than the pure nostalgic awesomeness of the first episode, the first season is pretty weak because the kids are so young, but it gets a lot better. I do classify it as a guilty pleasure no matter what.

With the US obsessed with reality tv and more scandalous shows, Canada seems to have become a source for a ton of teen shows that wind up on various cable channels. My wife is a bit of a sucker for those (Blake Holsey High, Life With Derek, Instant Star, Radio Free Roscoe, Naturally Sadie, etc.), although I wouldn't recommend any of them for you.

With the red dot on the M60, it's hard to put 2-3 rounds on the exact same small target at max range.  Your first round will probably hit since you have the red dot for aim, but then it drifts up.

With the grip on the RPD, the first 3 rounds pretty much hit within the same tiny target even at max range on the largest maps.  Since the RPD does 40 damage per round, even without a head shot it's a kill at max range with 3 out of your available 100 rounds in the mag.

Is that from the hip?

Oh BTW, even with GTA4 out I did manage to log on yesterday long enough to red dot my M60 and hit level 44.

Does it track your individual stats or no?

It's a little unclear at the moment.  There is a thing called the "Liberty City Marathon" that tracks you towards a set of goals (400 miles walked/ran, 4000 miles driven, 120,000 bullets fired, etc.), but I have all 0%. Either it hasn't updated yet or I have done so little it hasn't registered as a full %.  They don't completely list all the stats you have access to in-game.

There is also a separate multi-player stat section, but it is "coming soon".  Other stuff includes an area that you are allowed to go in after you finish the story, and some special challenges, most notably people who get 100% completion during the first week of release.

edit: beaten, oh well.

I've gotten about 3 hours of SP and 1.5 hours of MP in today, and I'm loving it.  Granted, I'm really not a graphics whore, but it looks great on my 32" LCD.  Using the cinema angle while riding the subway, the cars looked incredibly realistic. The city just seems so huge, and I have already had some random things happen when I have bumped into people on the street. I did get backed up behind about 20 cars at a toll booth - realistic, but a bit silly for a game.

Multiplayer was a lot of fun and we only played a little bit of it. Free mode alone was a blast.  Setting off an RPG at your own feet with 2 others next to you = comedy gold.

Oh, MP did appear to lock up on everyone at one point.

I was definitely seduced by the flashiness of the P90.  By the time I leveled it up, I was glad to be done with it. Just a few more kills on my SAW (I comically brought it on Wetworks in an attempt to get the last 6 kills for my last round of the night and only managed 3), and I move on to the RPD and the M60.  I really hope those guns are better suited for deep impact, because it seemed to do nothing for the SAW.  Maybe I will fool around with sniping, because I haven't done any. Shotguns or mini Uzi - don't think I'm going there.

I continue to struggle.  But using some or your tips, I finally managed to have a match where I got more kills than deaths.  Barely (7 kills, 2 assists, 6 deaths).  I was using the AK47 with the red-dot scope.

Any tips for the Creek map?  I can only scrape out a kill or two on that map (with double-digit deaths every time  retard).

Anyway, I'm having fun.  And I appreciate the insights.

At the start of the map, run to the cave and kill them.  Then stay in the cave killing them.  If they are in the cave, don't go there.   If they are not in the cave, go there and kill them when they try to go in the cave.  Once you've mastered the cave, think about killing people outside of the cave. smile

Yup, this is pretty much my MO on Creek.  I've had a few 20+ kills, single digit deaths on Creek mostly working the cave and the houses. A lot of people are just not very careful going into the cave for some reason.  However, you can run into trouble if you run into a team with some sense.  I had a bad round last night where I would often get a grenade kill at the cave entrance, flash it, and still get killed because there was an enemy who was staying a safe distance back.  It also helps to have a buddy hold one end of the cave while you hold the other.  The problem then comes when it gets too quiet and your teammate doesn't mention he's leaving.

I'd say Pipeline, District, Chinatown, Ambush and Bloc are the maps I still feel uncomfortable on. Broadcast I am getting better with.  That's a pretty big chunk of maps, but there are at least a significant group where I have good places to get kills.

By the way, overhead maps like these can be pretty helpful.  I don't think there are any for the new maps, though, because they haven't come out on pc.  You'll see different names for the buildings in different places.  I saw a map that called the buildings on Bog McDonald's, Burger King and KFC, but I've never heard anyone refer to them that way online.

This weekend's lessons:

1. I am very glad to be done with the Skorpion.
2. I wish I had known the G36c shot really well from the hip when I started using it, not after quite a few rounds struggling with it and just a few kills short of the red dot.
3. The P90 is AWESOME.
4. I used Juggernaut when I first started playing but have replaced it with other perks along the way (most often Stopping Power or Sleight of Hand). I heard other people complaining about people using it, but I didn't have a problem with it.  Now I can kind of see their point.  Seeing someone you've unloaded on get away (or kill you) is pretty frustrating.  However, it is very satisfying to take a SAW to them, especially if their tag is HaloGamer(something), like the guy I took quite a bit of revenge on this afternoon.
8143  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: Do I even NEED a router? on: April 27, 2008, 02:46:11 PM
The other thing the router does in a lot of cases is clone one of the MAC addresses on your network.  A lot of cable companies will only allow you to have one IP address, so they register one MAC address and will only assign an IP to that MAC address.  To get around this, you clone the MAC address on the router and it distributes it's own IP addresses on the local network. It may be that the one PC that you have working is the one with the MAC address the ISP has registered.

If your ISP allowed you to take multiple IPs, the switch would be sufficient.

Played a bit more tonight with strangers (after the late afternoon session with GT folks).  After maxing out my AK-74u, I once again became useless trying to find a new gun I could do anything with.  My return to the G3 lasted 2 deaths or so, as I simply can't pull the trigger fast enough on that thing unless I'm shooting someone in the back.  So I moved on to the Skorpion.  I did ok with that one, but it is just plain the wrong gun for certain maps (well, at least in these hands) and I was getting destroyed if I wasn't in the cave on Creek or in the construction site on that map with the construction site. Luckily my teammates didn't pay notice while I was getting mowed down.  I didn't take it on Countdown, though - that would have been a little ridiculous.

Good fun tonight, although I was pretty inconsistent due to trying to level up some new guns.  I had no luck at all with the M60, but did pretty well with AK-74u, at least on the close quarters maps. Would have rather had an assault rifle on some of the more spacious maps, but I was trying for XP (made Captain).

I swear on that last round on Wetwork I was every one of Mikigami's kills and 90% of those were me catching a grenade he tossed 50 yards. He's amazing with those things.

#2.   What should i be buying from merchants?   Do you ever get equipment or weapons?   Should i just buy those scrolls that do damage or increase my defense or power?   Not sure what i should be buying or should i be saving up money for better items to come.   Just wondering what i should be spending money on.
#3.  Do battles basically stay the way they are or do i get more attack styles?  Just wondering what to expect for fighting....other than different enemies.

I haven't played in a while so I'm just going by memory (I have the PS2 version).

1. Yes. Also you can feed all of the animals of each type if you are a completionist.  I don't think there is a best way - do everything.

2. You will have the option to buy both new weapons and get new abilities along the way.  I think you get these at training dojos.  The combat isn't really all that hard, so just get what looks fun.  If you save up enough you can get
Spoiler for Hiden:

3. See 2.

Regarding the limited attacks - are you running out of ink?  After you use the brush a number of times you run out of ink and have to wait for it to recharge.  You can earn more ink wells along the way.
