What difficulty are you on?
Spoiler for Hiden:
I just started blasting away and got through it the first time I tried (on normal). Shoot at their chests.

And you might want to put spoiler tags on that post.
8122  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Gears of War 2 Impressions on: November 09, 2008, 05:18:42 AM
Moriarty and I played through just about all of acts 1 and 2 tonight on Hardcore co-op, and I have to say that it does seem a lot more like the Gears 1 difficulty that way. It was a lot more intense, but definitely playable - you were not dying constantly, but you felt like you needed to be careful not be killed. I'll probably continue my solo game on normal, so I can enjoy the story and pick up some of the tricky parts for when I play on harder levels.
8123  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Gears of War 2 Impressions on: November 08, 2008, 10:43:02 PM
OK, the game is definitely picking up.

Spoiler for Hiden:
The razor hail fight was fantastic, followed by the tank ride up the mountain and then deep down underground.

It definitely seems (like the manual says) that they were trying to create action movie situations, rather than just throw a lot of bad guys at you. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Based on what I've seen, hopefully it will continue getting better.

Regarding the plot:
Spoiler for Hiden:
I'm a little surprised they went with the "government fuses alien race with human race to create race of the future" storyline. It's been to done too many times and makes the story seem cliche.

Oh, and just because they make is so easy to post pictures, I'll put one here, even though it's not very good.

8124  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Gears of War 2 Impressions on: November 08, 2008, 05:33:06 PM
I am through act 2 now, and my impression of the single player is, while there are more big events, they seem to have toned the fights way down. I remember in the first game there were significant fights right at the beginning in the ruins. There was one where you had to assault a building with semi-circular steps, flanking through the halls on the right side and then defending the counter-attack. It was challenging, even on casual. So far on normal, I've only felt at risk a couple of times.

And for those who have made it through act 2:
Spoiler for Hiden:
The way they handled killing the worm was tedious. There were no real dangerous enemies inside the body and it was a lot of walking.

I'm still enjoying the game, but I'm pretty surprised at the pacing so far. Maybe it will pick up.

I haven't found any COG tags yet.  I don't know if they took those out, or they are better hidden, or I'm just not paying attention.

I haven't seen any but I did find a collectible, it was a newspaper I think. They also show finding collectibles in the achievements so I'm guessing those replaced the COGs.

Yep, there's paper items to collect now.  They are all paper-like it seems, but not always newspapers.  Documents would be a good descr.

Actually, there are some COG tags too, I found some. But every item is pretty much different. They shimmer a bit so you can identify them. I'm not sure I like that change. They gave you hints when you were near the COG tags in the first game so you didn't have to search every inch of the game. Now, if you want the collectibles, you have to distract yourself more from the action.

I started on normal, and it is pretty easy. However, I felt the same way when I started the first game on casual, and it got significantly harder as the game went on. I expect that will happen here as well, so I am sticking with it.

Horde is a very fun mode - 5 of us managed to get through 18 waves on our 3rd try. The 18+ waves took us over an hour (the web site has a pretty decent stats section - not as good as Halo, but good). If you could even manage to get through 50 waves, I am wondering how long the session would be.

I've only been able to play a bit due to "working from home", but I can say that the game is absolutely gorgeous.  Also Normal feels too easy.  I think I will restart on Hard.  Also I think Marcus moves slower than in Gears 1.   I might just be used to Fallou 3 and Resistance 2 move speed though.

I had the same thoughts.  Except I'm playing on casual and think I'll hit Normal.  The last one was kind of brutal at times, so I wimped.  Does anyone know if it gets really tough down the road?

I've read that the game is similar to Halo 3 in that it was tuned for playing on Hard for average gamers.

Are there 3 difficulty settings or 4? I played the original on casual because hard was a little bit much when I first started out. I had heard they were going to have casual, normal, hard and insane this time, with normal being more like normal in other games.

On X-play they said that the on-rails shooting parts are significantly harder than the other parts of the games, so if you are feeling pretty challenged, you should prepare to get frustrated during those parts. I haven't played the game yet, so I can't confirm.

BGE and PoP: Sands of Time went to $20 together. Probably the best $40 gaming purchase ever. But that's neither here nor there.

Is there multiplayer in this? Definitely surprising. Didn't love the demo, though.

Crap, you guys are lowering my resistance. Only thing is, with a max team of 5 will people get left out in the cold? Can you create a room of 10 to fight against one another? Co-op I know would be limited. I want the 50 wave achievement!

Yeah, MA is so blue that we don't see anything.  Hell, the vast majority of my ballot this morning was for unopposed Dems.  We've been getting a ton of ads for the NH Shaheen/Sununu race.  Those are particularly nasty.  There's also been a lot of nasty 537 ads lately too, but I think those are aimed more at NH than MA.  Those things make me sick.

The radio ad they've been playing has been hilarious. They've got a recording of Shaheen saying "I'll stand with President Bush" that they play 3 times in a row at the end of the tv commercial, but in the radio commercial, they repeat it FIVE times in a row. First time I heard it I thought the radio was broken. I'm surprised they just didn't put it on  loop for 30 seconds. And Shaheen is the Dem, if you didn't know. Talk about Republicans throwing Bush under the bus. Sununu stopped and backed up to make sure the tire marks were clear enough.

8131  Non-Gaming / Political / Religious Nonsense / Re: NOT Political. Please Vote Tomorrow on: November 04, 2008, 01:03:59 PM
Mission accomplished. I got on line (in line?) at 6:45, polls opened at 7, I was in my car at 7:25. The line was long when I left, but not Florida long. We had a different polling station in 2004, so I don't really have a benchmark to judge if the line was out of the ordinary. They definitely ran out of parking spaces at the Jr. High School, though, if that is any indication. I got a kick out of the "15 Min Voter Parking" signs they had up in the lot. Wishful thinking.

None of the MA stores are closing, I wonder why? I like the CC near my office. The location is easy to get to from the highway, it's well organized, and they have in-store pickup when you order from the web. I don't buy there without checking prices, but I have gotten decent deals there.
8134  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: God of War 2 Impressions on: November 03, 2008, 04:10:27 PM
Temporarily bringing this thread back from the dead as I finished this game this weekend. Final impressions:

1. The game was great, but about 2 hours too long. I really enjoy the GoW gameplay, but with the exception of a few puzzle bits, it's a fairly non-stop action game, and that can start to feel a little repetitive after 10 hours or so. I think 10-12 hours is good for a game of this type, and I think I wound up over 14 hours. I finally took up the offer to go to easy mode during the final boss fight because I was ready to be done.

2. Boss fights in normal seemed out of balance at times - they were actually too easy. Now, as the resident boss-battle hater, I didn't have a huge problem with this, but it seemed odd. In the first GoW, I remember repeating the boss battles many times. In this one, I don't think I ever fought a boss more than twice (with the exception of the final one). In a lot of cases, the game seemed to offer you many chances to recover health during the battle, and the bosses didn't do much damage. I had a lot more trouble with the instances where you get walled in and have to fight a bunch of enemies to proceed (such as the aforementioned "ramp" battle).

3. Thanks to the developers for leaving out the spinning blades.

I think you should be more concerned with the lack of pass protection and the inability to block for the run.  Obviously Johnson is no Romo, but would you honestly rather have Bollinger at QB instead?

I was really referring to today's game. Johnson looked completely lost with the passes he was throwing.

The team just blows right now. The number of stupid penalties they make alone is an embarrassment.

Yeah, I grew up in a dark blue state (NY) and have lived in an even darker blue (MA) one for the last 10 years. My mom's justification for finally ceasing to try and get me to vote for McCain was that Mass would never go red anyway. I'm hoping to get the last laugh, as my parents are voting in their first presidential election since they moved from Virginia.
8139  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Banjo Kazooie Nuts & Bolts on: October 31, 2008, 07:42:35 PM
I can't remember where I read it, but this game did not begin development as a Banjo title, so it is not surprising that it is not exactly like the original games. Personally, I never had an N64 and have always wanted to play the original Banjo games. I preordered to get the free arcade download, so at $37 it's fairly low risk for me. I love platformers, but I know this isn't going to be exactly a classic platformer. I may wind up being pleasantly surprised. On the other hand, I loathed the gummi ship parts of Kingdom Hearts and pretty much hated Kameo, so this may wind up on Goozex quickly. We'll see.

So here's my $60 question - if I couldn't really get in to Oblivion, should I bother trying this, or is it significantly different? I'd say the things I didn't like about Oblivion were:

1) the combat - melee combat with one single swinging move, so it relied mostly on your weapon and stats and not on your skill (as opposed to say, God Of War style combos and evasion)
2) too much exploration - you could go into a lot of large dungeons that had no purpose other than to provide loot

I'm not judging the game, mind you, just saying what fits within my playing style. Is this basically Oblivion with guns or something different?
8142  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Banjo Kazooie Nuts & Bolts on: October 29, 2008, 02:41:50 PM

It seemed like they were trying too hard to come up with gags akin to the "crazy-hot scale" and so on and they were just falling flat. Big Bang Theory started slow in its first season, became very funny, and has continued consistently this season.

The one thing I was a little concerned with was the lack of feedback when shooting the enemies and the way they blended in with the environment.

No, none of the 40GB versions have backward compatibility.  The 60GB version has hardware BC, and the old 80GB version has software BC (which supports less games than hardware BC).  The 80GB version that is now being released has no BC. It's very frustrating for people contemplating a purchase in the near future (like myself) who want BC.

I'm cranky today, so you get my English lesson, Teggy.

Less is used when you're talking about an unquantifiable amount.  For example, "Less Filling."

Fewer is used when the quantity can be defined with a number.  For example, "Fewer calories"  or "Fewer games."

There is a site to check compatibility (, but, yeah, you're out of luck with the 40GB.

I work nights, when the show's being aired so I had to catch season 3 on the adult swim website.

I loved the bit in one episode where they describe him as the guy who sounds like Ray Romano. The perfect solution would be to get Ray Romano to voice a new henchman.
