Did you order online or in-store?  If you did it online you may just have gotten the same new email I did.

In-store. And thanks again...

That's all folks.

After about 5 or 6 overheating related RRoD's, the one this morning fried something for good.
It happened during a super kick ass defending round where I racked up a good 20 some kills with the silenced sniper rifle.

When i try to turn it on, I get sound, but no picture.
I thought it might have been the TV, but dvd and the ps2 works just fine, so yeah..
My only thought left is that it might be the wire itself, so I will try to pick up a new one today and see if that works.
Doubt that it's the case though..

Wow, this is becoming some kind of epidemic here all of a sudden. I'm getting worried.
8045  Non-Gaming / Political / Religious Nonsense / Re: Obama vs. McCain - My Research PT. 1 on: June 27, 2008, 07:35:02 PM
Now, I don't like McCain's tax plan because I am against deficit spending which is likely where he is headed. However, I must say that under Obama's plan, as it is written there, some rich folk are getting the screws put to them. I guess it is some kind of average, but as the numbers are there, a person making $3 million loses another 25% of their income.  I'd be curious to know what the actual effect on a person making that much is - maybe it is not nearly that bad.

Note: I fall into a tax bracket that would benefit from Obama's plan - I just don't subscribe to the whole "screw the rich" philosophy.  If they are getting unfair tax breaks in relation to the rest of the country, I am all for remedying that, but the numbers in the chart look a little unfair.

EDIT: Just caught this part - doesn't make me real happy about either plan now.

Quote
Under both plans, all American taxpayers could pay a price for their tax cuts: a bigger deficit. The Tax Policy Center estimates that over 10 years, McCain's tax proposals could increase the national debt by as much as $4.5 trillion with interest, while Obama's could add as much as $3.3 trillion.

The reason: neither plan would raise the amount of revenue expected under current tax policy - which assumes all the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts expire by 2011. And neither plan would raise enough to cover expected government costs during those 10 years.

"Distributionally, they're markedly different. But in terms of their impact on revenue, the two plans are not terribly different," said Roberton Williams, principal research associate at the Tax Policy Center and the former deputy assistant director for tax analysis at the Congressional Budget Office.

You definitely get +10 for vehicle assist kills.  Don't know why it is so high since it take no skill at all.  A great way to get points is just to get into a tank with Mikagami or ATB and just sit there while they kill people biggrin

Guessing these are the "savior" and "avenger" bonuses.  Would like to know how they work - can you avenge someone's death forever, or does it have to be with 30 seconds or something? And what constitutes saving someone? Does the guy you kill have to have sent a bullet into one of your teammates in the past 3 seconds to take their health down past 50%, or what?

So, I have to say I am pretty amazed that I have not encountered any lag during the 7 or so hours I have put into the multi on the retail release. However, trying to get a squad into a game has become a major annoyance. Yesterday, Hark, Mikagami, Wonderpug and I tried to set up a squad to join a match.  The first six or so times, even with different people starting the squad, the game would not only fail to join a match, but it would dump us all out of the squad into the main menu.  Another couple of times it took half the squad into a game but dumped the rest of the squad back to the main menu. I'm getting over the fact that you can only talk with 3 other people, but they need to at least let you do that much!

As far as playing goes, I think I kept Wonderpug a little too entertained with my knifing woes.  I'm just really poor at using the knife and was ecstatic when I finally got someone's tags last night. On the other hand, people have no problem knifing me. You can camp a lot easier in BC that in COD4, but you still need to check your surroundings, because a lot of people in the game have my tags.

From the EA UK board regarding the cheating:

Although if they don't reset the leaderboards, then who really cares, the damage is done.

One thing I'm confused about is the scoring. Can someone break down how games are scored and points given out? The manual does a crappy (as usual) of going into detail on these things.

You lose points for teamkills and suicides, and gain points for...

kills
assists
kills your vehicle passengers make
repairing teammates' vehicles
healing teammates
healing squadmates (more points than healing teammates)
destroying vehicles
killing an enemy who was about to kill a teammate
killing an enemy who just killed your teammate
damaging a crate
destroying a crate
defusing a crate

Oddly I have absolutely no idea if there's any kind of point reward or incentive to actually win the match.

Yeah, I would love to see a full list of all the ways to get points and their values.  A lot of times I get points and I don't even understand how I got them.  They should just release a PDF like GTA did with the multiplayer manual.

For example, it seems like you might actually get points for simply being near a squad member when they kill someone but I don't know.  I'd definitely like to know the definitions of "kill assist", "squad assist" and their point values, plus all the bonuses, like "avenger", "defense", etc.

I feel like there is a bonus for being on the winning team - my score always seems to be higher than I thought at the end of a match where I am on the winning team, but I could be wrong.

I've played with VERY few people who are diligent on the Artie (usually they are the type of people who kill each other to get on the artie...), but when you get someone who is good it can totally swing the battle in your favor- calling out locations of enemies, tanks etc...or as mentioned, lighting them up.

In the full game is there artillery on every map? I hope not.

I haven't seen an artillery gun on any of the other maps.  There probably are, but the fact that I haven't seen one likely means that are not on every map.

My impression is that you appear on radar if: someone keeps their reticule trained on you long enough (inconsistent), someone shoots you (sometimes I just spray my MG on the usual sniper hangouts and see what lights up), or if a sniper tosses a motion sensor your way.

If there's a guy on artillery that's actually contributing to the team, if he keeps his satellite camera trained on an enemy for a bit he'll light them up on the radar.

And the fact that we have to guess is the reason games are supposed to have real manuals. Stupid EA.

Pretty sure that you must be visually spotted. That, plus the lack of the killcam makes it a lot easier to park in one spot as a sniper in this game as opposed to COD.

So I am still trying to make heads or tails of the stats. When I logged off last night I had made level 6, which I believe requires 2400 points. However, when I looked on the in-game leaderboards, my points were slightly below 2000. When I look online now (which one would think is enough time to catch up), my points are 1025, but my rank is correct. If you divide by the time played (2hr 54min), you get an SPM of 5.89, but online it says my SPM is 15.835. Multiplied out, that comes to about 2,755 points, which I'm pretty sure I am short of in the game. It also says I have 96 kills, but if you add up my kills per kit, you get 94.

So basically, the stats are a little screwy right now, and I still am not sure if dropping out of a game has an effect on your stats.

Another question I had was about how to tell my teamates from enemies.  Sometimes I would aim my cross-hairs at someone and would see a blue or red name.  Other times, I wouldn't see any name (maybe I was too far away?)  I know red = enemy.  But does no name = enemy, too?  I guess another way to ask this is: do my teammates' names always appear on my screen?

4. I think leaving mid-game screws up your stats.  Based on the rounds I played, I know my SPM should be over 10, but it currently stands at 4.44.  My score is 685, yet my rank is Sergeant, which requires close to 2000 points to rank up to. So it looks like if you dump out of a game, they take away your points, but don't take away your minutes. I guess that is punishment for leaving the game, but if it's true, I wish I had known.  I was logging out of games to respond to game invites. Now I need to work my SPM back up, plus my rank is all messed up.

I think stats are slow to update. It seemed to me that the website is faster to update than the in game stats. Did you check there?

Re: cheating. What kind?

Well the website shows that I have 684 total score yet also shows that I am a Sergeant.  I could maybe believe the two are updated separately, but there are many other clues to support my theory.  For one, my SPM is 4.44, and I'm sure it was never that low, not even after my first round. Also, if I looked at the world rankings in-game, I would see the scaled down score, but after each round finished, I would see the larger score, showing me how much I needed to level up.

As far as the cheating goes, Hark described it as a bunch of people turning a vehicle over and then continuously repairing it.  Apparently they could get several thousand points per round.  Not sure if that is the only way to do it.

I did also notice that those little triangles started working in the full game.  It appears they denote a trend of some kind, because they can go up, down or to the right (signifying no change).  I'm not sure what trend they are showing, though.

OK, I got to play for a few hours this afternoon.  Impressions:

1. Support with MG36 is definitely my go-to kit for now. The scope on the MG is awesome, and I love getting points by healing people and being able to easily heal myself.  It also works well on attack and defend, as opposed to...

2. ...Demolitions.  Wow, I suck on attack with Demo, so I will be using it defend only for the time being.

3. It was great to play some new maps.  Oasis didn't even come up during the time I played.

4. 5. As predicted, I have already gotten the Darwin's parachute achievement by riding someone's laser-guided bomb down. Lame.

6. I think the voice comm was screwed up. I could hear other people, and they couldn't hear me, and at times I think it was gone entirely.  I have heard people on GAF complain about this, and it did happen once with the demo.

7. Apparently there is some really lame cheating going on. If this was happening in the demo, I can't believe they didn't patch it. The world leaderboards are apparently already worthless.

8. I experienced some bad tearing about 1/4 from the top of the screen playing the single player - anyone else see this?
8060  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / How I wish they would change the Wiimote on: June 24, 2008, 06:56:35 PM
I have been playing a bunch of Godfather: Blackhand and Metroid Prime 3 and realizing that they didn't really do a very good job with the Wiimote. Reason is they tried to make it some kind of Swiss-army knife controller, specifically setting it up to work as an NES controller when you turn it on it's side. That's fine and all, but now the locations of the +,-, 1 and 2 buttons are in horrible locations.  Looking at the menu screen (and the map) in either of these games means bending your thumb uncomfortably back. Hitting the + and - minus buttons is not much better.

I'd love a wiimote that is specifically designed for games where you are pointing the control at the screen (and there are plenty of those).  I'd like to see if they could put the + and - to the left and right of the A button.  Not sure where to put the 1 and 2, but I wouldn't mind pulling the d-pad closer to the A button either. Shooting a missile in Metroid again means stretching up.

The other big problem is with nunchuk.  Since nothing is holding the nunchuck level, I constantly find that my left hand has rotated so that my palm is almost facing up, and when I think I am pressing forward, I am actually pressing a bit off to the left.  Don't know how to fix that.

Ron, I agree with a large part of your review, but definitely not with your crouching mention.  In COD4 (which you mention nails the controls) sprint is on the L3 which it is in BF:BC as well, yet you say it's not natural for crouch to not be on the L3.

Yeah, my only beefs with the controls are
1) the sprint - I don't really care for it on L3 in COD either, but at least in that game you only need to click once. Battlefield allows for unlimited sprint, so you have to hold the stick down, but that's a really awkward move for me.
2) left trigger for acceleration on vehicles.  I know why they did this for tanks, but it's still counter to almost every other game.  I haven't tried the alternate controls - I may like them better.

They're not in the multiplayer, but as a guess perhaps there's a part in the SP storyline involving a parachute.

The achievement says "(Online) Glide in the parachute for 3 seconds".

A bit of a bummer - they finally revealed what you need to do to get free weapon #4 - you have to have played a previous Battlefield game, which I have not. It is an assault rifle, which is not too big of a deal, as I expect to spend most of my time as Support and Demolitions. The developers have also hinted that they will likely free up all the find-all-five weapons somewhere down the line.

I believe it's called Darwin's Parachute because there is no parachute.  They want you to freefall to your death from high enough for 3 seconds of hang time.

Oh, and there is no street date for this title so nobody broke anything (combined with the fact that the release date is the 23rd anyway)

Smartasses - I wonder if the laser designator bug still exists in the retail copy.  You, know, the one were you can spawn on someone's bomb as it's falling from the sky?  Could get that achievement no problem smile

My bad on the release date -  I thought it was tomorrow.  Does that mean Gamestop should have it today?  I haven't gotten a call.

Now that I sufficiently strung ATB along, I can reveal that I did, in fact, reinstate my preorder for this. The single player looks fun, so I figured I would take a chance that the multiplayer becomes more consistently fun for me.  I can always Goozex it if not. Plus I will have a whole 5 days of having a better score than ATB to enjoy - 4 days during which he won't have access to his XBOX and 1 day for him to catch up.

I'm surprised that people have copies already - you'd think EA would care about online retailers breaking street date the same as b&m.

For Hark and anyone that has the game already:

1. There is an achievement for using a parachute - I thought there were not parachutes in the game?
2. How does the picture taking utility work?

Just a little followup on this. After finishing the game on Casual, I have slowly been completing it on Hardcore. I played the first act on Hardcore after finishing it on Casual, then wanted to get the first Dom achievement, so joined someone playing on Hardcore. Turned out they were at the end of the game, so I got RAAM out of the way on co-op.  Went back this weekend to finish up acts 2-4 on Hardcore. It was challenging, but not un-fun, barring some places where I expected a struggle, like the final mansion fight.

After I finished up the Hardcore achievements, I figured I would try out Insane.  I have to tip my hat to anyone who has completed the game on this level. On the second chapter it already felt harder than the hardest levels on Hardcore. I think I'd have as much fun trying Insane as playing COD on Veteran - no fun at all.  You people have some real patience to work through that.

I'd like to know how well the suitcase nuke performs.

I have found there to be a surprising amount of team killers in the demo. Particularly guys who want to use the artillery and shoot the guy in the seat, but others that are also just being jerks.  Not sure if there is a kick function, but at least there are the Live controls so you can avoid playing with that person again.

8078  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [XBOX Live stats] COD4 is a juggernaut on: June 19, 2008, 08:32:11 PM
Get it? "Juggernaut"?  ninja

Anywaaaaaay, GTAIV managed to be the be the #1 played game on Live for a whole 4 weeks before relinquishing its spot back to COD4 (and Halo 3). The Battlefield demo is pretty impressive coming in at #4 for two weeks straight, which implies it may take over the top spot for a little while.  But I have a feeling COD4 will take the top spot back again. Personally, I think COD4 is a much easier (and enjoyable) game to pick up and play for a quick session without friends, and I think that's why it will continue to be people's go-to game.

Hostess fruit pies, usually lemon.  Also known as "death pockets" (don't read the nutrition info on the label), hence the "once-in-a-while".

Oh, and the cereal that actually needs a warning label is corn pops.  I know more than one person that has started bleeding from the mouth while eating those things.

Um, they jumped out of a airplane on a liferaft in Temple of Doom and were fine.  Remember, only badguys have problems with heights.  slywink

Yeah, a parachute-like raft onto snow. Completely plausible smile

Even if I give you the waterfall, the nuclear blast was just ridiculous.
