I had initially heard that the film was the first 3 or 4 episodes of the series, and if you didn't see it in the theater you could just wait a month or so for it to air on tv. Is that correct?

I noticed something strange in the "manual" last night.  You can only strafe with DBs/CBs (left trigger, I think) if you are playing the lower 2 difficulty levels. Isn't strafing "in the game"?

From what I understand, the age rule was intended to protect younger gymnasts from extreme physical strain while their bodies are still growing. Sort of like not allowing kids to throw curve balls until a certain age.
7965  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Madden 09 impressions on: August 13, 2008, 12:22:35 AM
Got it for the 360 and have played through the test and one game so far. I can't say if it's good or bad, but here are some initial impressions.

The test is a cool idea, but I think it needs some tweaking.  I got all-madden difficulty for rush offense and rookie difficulty for rush defense. I know I am not that good at rushing, and when I played my first game I was lucky to get a yard on a rush.  Now, the good thing is that over time it will adjust down, but it seems the test was a little flawed.

The controls are overwhelming.  This has been a problem for me with more recent Madden games, and it's gotten worse.  I'm not saying that it is bad that there is that level of detail in the game, but I wish there was a good way to learn them. The virtual trainer doesn't seem as good a way to learn the controls as they training camp was, although I am now remembering I didn't look at what was under the mini-games menu, and maybe there is something good in there. But I would really like it if there were ways to easily do drills and learn how to do the lead blocking, total receiver control, highlight stick, weapons, shifts, audibles, etc. It's going to take a lot of patience for me to learn the game.

The first game was in the rain and there was a good amount of stuttering during the "cutscenes". I started up a game without rain and there was still some, but not as bad.  I'm curious if other people experience that.  I'm running at 720p.

Overall, I know I have barely scratched the surface of the game - there are so many modes that I'm looking forward to try out.

No, but not too far south of there. My wife's family runs an inn called Watervale there, and the daytime shot is taken from the top of a dune called "Old Baldy" which is on the land.
7967  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: [360] Madden '09 Online League on: August 11, 2008, 05:39:56 PM
I'm definitely a fan of "straight play", like Pete. As I said, I have always liked Madden, but have never gotten good at it. I'm sure the talent level will be mixed. Waiting until the end of August to start sounds like a great idea, since then we'll have a little time to get comfortable with the game. Heck, maybe I'll finally learn to use hot routes, audibles and defensive shifts.

So they just added the "Millionaire's Club" to the web site - you become a member by accumulating over $1 million during the course of playing the game, and the faster you did it, the higher on the list you are. You don't have to have it all at once - anything you gain at any time counts toward the total.  Turns out I gathered up over $1.3 million when I played.  The section has some little easter eggs, but nothing major.  The also have multiplayer stats working, although I'm not sure if they started working at an earlier date.

I heard they are thinking about a 4th one in the series, which would make sense considering how Extinction ended.  I'm looking forward to multiple naked Milla's on screen at once  slywink

Yeah, although the idea of an army of Alices assaulting Umbrella's home base seems a little a silly to me. There was talk of continuing the Claire storyline if Mila wasn't interested in doing another film (which she said at one time).

I am however very interested in Resident Evil: Degeneration, the CGI film with Claire and Leon.

Finally caught this on Starz HD. Actually not that bad. I really enjoyed the first movie because of all the fan service and how it could plausibly fit in the timeline of the games, but I thought the second one was a big mess. This one certainly lacked the claustrophobia that I would associate with Resident Evil, but I thought the story was focused and well paced and it had quite a few cool zombie chopping scenes. It ended a bit abruptly, though IMHO.  Not a great movie, but I was entertained.

FINALLY got it.  Took me about 23 tries.  Cripes was that frustrating.  I promised myself I was trading the game in for something else right before my last (and successful) attempt.   icon_lol

Spoiler for Hiden:
now do the other option,LOL

 icon_lol  I actually might!

Man, looking back at this weekend's gaming sessions with GTA I have to laugh.  I was so frustrated at one point that I put down my controller after one failed attempt, calmly walked into the kitchen, poured myself a glass of water...then threw it back in sink while cussing up a storm.   icon_lol

I believe "revenge" was the easier of the endings (the second half of the mission is slightly, but significantly different). Well, the last mission, because the actual "revenge" mission I found harder than the "deal" mission. So if you did the "deal" ending, then you shouldn't find the final mission that hard to repeat. But you'll have to do the actual "revenge" mission, which is pretty hard, but nothing more than an extended firefight.

Tim Schaeffer (or however you spell his name) can't catch a break.  There's no way someone won't publish Ghostbusters. The game was written by the original crew and all their voices are already recorded. I'm not even clear how a huge IP like that doesn't fit in with their strategy.

7982  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Getting wisdom tooth pulled- any words of wisdom? on: July 28, 2008, 07:08:59 PM
Due to the large number of teeth I had pulled as a youth, I was somehow spared from having my wisdom teeth removed (not that they didn't wind up undoing some of the work my braces did). I think I wrote this up some other time, but my first couple of experiences getting teeth extracted were horrible due to the method of anesthesia that was used. I have always understood that it was some form of sodium pentathol, but I really don't know. There was a mask involved at some point, but you obviously can't have dental work done with a mask on.

Anyhoo, the final time I had teeth removed was with Novocaine, and it was soooooooooooo much better. In and out, no grogginess or anything. It's a little weird that they're prying your teeth out, but otherwise it is no big deal at all. I don't recall what I did afterwards, though.  Probably had some jello or something.

7985  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / RoboCop by Darren Aronofsky? on: July 25, 2008, 08:16:53 PM
This definitely caught my attention at IMDB:

Robocop is returning to the big screen - 15 years after the cyborg crimefighter handed over his badge and gun.

Filmmaker Darren Aronofsky - famous for movies Pi and Requiem for a Dream - has signed on to direct the fourth installment of the franchise, reports Daily Variety.

The movie, a 'noir' take on the story about a murdered cop who is brought back to life as a robot, is slated for a 2010 release.

That would be quite different from a Verhoeven RoboCop - but I am curious...

Mostly I don't like the "you're alone in a scary hell world and here's about 100 hospital room doors that you have to open to find a key and who knows what might be on the other side - probably nothing, but every once a while some creepy monster that only a sociopath could dream up" scary.
7988  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Will F.E.A.R. make me poop my pants? on: July 23, 2008, 04:36:07 PM
Project Origin is looking very interesting, but I haven't played F.E.A.R. yet. Here's the thing - I get very stressed out playing scary games.  I managed to make it through the original Silent Hill, but Silent Hill 2 I got partway through but have never been able to get myself back in the mood to finish it. Games like Resident Evil or Eternal Darkness I can deal with, although I tend to want to play them during the day. Something like Dead Rising is no problem.

So where does F.E.A.R. fit on the scary scale?

OK, I have about 5 hours left and things have started moving at lightning pace.

Spoiler for Hiden:
Bran and Rickin's murder. The way it was handled at the time (completely "off screen") I was sure that the news was just a rumor and they would turn up. Martin is just ruthless. Not that I care too much as neither Bran or Rickin were very interesting. But killing them both off was a big surprise. I'm hoping Theon meets a fitting end, but at this point I can't make any assumptions.

EDIT: OK, I just read something at wikipedia that leads me to believe all may not be as it seems.  I better not do that again.

"My brother is a casual gamer, but he's the sort of person who doesn't like it when the visuals are too intricate or elaborate -- he gets nervous about whether he's good enough to play it at all,"

So casual gamers are intimidated if the game they are playing looks good. OK.
7991  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: did you ever watch "120 Minutes"? on: July 18, 2008, 10:39:07 PM
related, it turns out that tons of these videos are on youtube. Probably illegally, but I'm not telling smile  I just watched a bunch of videos by the Mighty Lemon Drops, Trashcan Sinatras, The Lightning Seeds, etc.

EDIT: OK, I had to go back and edit in links to some favorites I was finding on youtube:

The Milltown Brothers, "Which Way Should I Jump"
The Primitives, "Crash"
The La's, "There She Goes"
The Darling Buds, "Crystal Clear"
Ned's Atomic Dustbin, "Happy"
The Connells, "Stone Cold Yesterday"
The Trashcan Sinatras, "Only Tongue Can Tell"
World Party, "Put The Message In The Box"
Matthew Sweet, "Girlfriend"
The Mighty Lemon Drops, "Into The Heart Of Love"
Concrete Blonde, "Happy Birthday"
Blur, "There's No Other Way"

So all those songs are from the 88-91 period I believe. Just as a point of information, in 1992 I can pretty much pinpoint the moment in time when my musical interests started moving in a different direction. It's when I heard this song:

Superchunk, "Throwing Things"

7992  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / did you ever watch "120 Minutes"? on: July 18, 2008, 06:14:26 PM
Came across this site while doing some wikipedia surfing:

It's almost every playlist from 120 minutes during its run (the link goes to the 1986-1995 period). Personally, it was a neat trip down memory lane, because I remember exactly where I was when some of those shows aired.  For example, I remember the premiere of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" because I had just started college and a group of us in my freshman dorm watched in one of the common rooms. I remember that Blur's "There's No Other Way" was one of the other videos they played during that show.

The summer before my freshman year I bussed tables at a local restaurant, and I usually worked Sundays and was off Mondays.  I would come home late Sunday night and stay up to watch the show. I remember so many of those videos, many of which prompted me to go buy tapes by bands I haven't heard in forever - Ned's Atomic Dustbin, The Milltown Brothers, The 360s, World Party, Straightjacket Fits, The La's, Concrete Blonde (although I just did hear "Joey" on the radio when I was at the dentist the other day) , etc.

Good times, good times...

He'd make a decent Eli Vance, though.

You can see a bunch of shots of the old characters here

Valve's Chet Faliszek (known in the industry as just Chet) explained that the redesigns came from the responses of play testers having trouble telling their fellow players apart in the fray, which is pretty important since you might otherwise shoot them

I certainly haven't played this game, but that sounds a little odd. They would mistake the grizzly biker guy with a girl? The old army guy with a black guy?

Nuts, I already have the audiobook - now I feel like I should read it instead.  I think I got the book with audible credits though, so I probably wouldn't be losing much if I never listened to it.

Do you mean a Feast for Crows? Yeah, this guy, Roy Dotrice (sp?) is quite good.  That's too bad that they lost him. One of the great things about the Harry Potter audio books is that Jim Dale did all 7. Little bit of trivia - a different guy does the British Harry Potter audio books.  Seems kind of silly, no?
