The only thing you need to know about G4s downfall is that they now have a show called "Hurl", in which several contestants compete in eating contests, after which they do different activities to see who can last the longest without throwing up.  I wish I was making that up.

I'm thinking I'm going to cancel my pre-order on this.  I'm just not enjoying the pace of the game, and I definitely don't like the max of 4 person communications.  A game like COD4 I feel comfortable playing with all strangers, this game it feels too lonely and disjointed if you aren't playing with a cohesive squad, and that would limit my playtime. There are a few other things too, not the least of which is the horrible lag. If they get the lag figured out, maybe I will Goozex it after release, but my new game dollar is a little too valuable right now to get in on this.

I'm sure the lag will be fixed. COD4 couldn't even be played on release or at Christmas...but you're right about communications. If no one is talking on your squad it's a lonely place to be...

I just watched the "Harvest Day" preview on live and they have all these great shots of squads working together with armor and coordinated attacks on objectives with Support guys running behind the line tossing out health.  That would be a very cool game to play. But with the way they have the communications set up the only way a game like that would be played would be with people planning beforehand, and even so, as soon as the plan broke down, no one would know.

I know there was a command position in BF 2, although I never played it.  That would be a good compromise - have one guy that can hear all squads and see them on the map and have him relay orders or status.

Based on some of the conversations going on, the game seems a bit more complex than your average MP shooter.  Can anyone shed some light on what the learning curve is like for a complete Battlefield n00b?  There seems to be a lot going on.  Repairing vehicles?  Med kits?  Demolition specialists?  I've never experienced so much in a shooter before.  I'm not even sure where to begin.  Fabulous

I'm in the same boat.  I played a little while as Assault yesterday, then switched over to Demolitions. They have a shotgun (one shot kills) and a rocket launcher that I could use to blow stuff up. Pretty simple, so I felt pretty comfortable. But I tried to fly a helicopter and couldn't get it to go forward (I don't think I was the only one because I got in the gunner seat on another chopper and the pilot never got us off the ground) and I have no idea how I was getting killed by artillery when I didn't see any artillery pieces.

Joined Wonderpug in an in-progress match through Live and I was wondering what you guys were talking about with the lag. Turned out we were on an unranked server. When we moved to a ranked server, things got ridiculous.  I stayed on long enough to rank up 1 level. I'm definitely going to need some assurances that this is going to be fixed if I'm going to keep my preorder.

EDIT: This is up on the web site:

I played through the single player twice this evening. I liked that you could roam pretty far, and there were different weapons and tools to be found depending which direction you went.  The destructible environments are great, even though the amount of explosive barrels and crates hanging around is a little silly. I didn't feel that it took much more to take soldiers down than COD4, especially with headshots. However I think the soldiers blend in a little too well with the background, because I was having some trouble spotting them, and the aim is a bit too sensitive, because I was flailing around quite a bit.  That could probably be adjusted, though. Not a huge fan of the health system.

I tried to log on to an MP match and after about 30 seconds on the battlefield...it crashed my XBOX.

Oh, and almost forgot, games with 50+ people playing at once.

This is not an advantage.

CoD4's biggest maps are good to handle twenty people tops. Once you hit like 25 players it's just grenade spam from the start of the map until the end.

The only minor exception is creek, which seems big enough to handle 20 or maybe 25 ok. It still gets pretty stupid on 42 player servers though.

I saw a pretty funny video the other day of a 50 player match on Shipment. The guy doing the video was using an M60 and pointing it towards a spawn point and he racked up a 50 kill streak in about 30 seconds.

My best attempt so far has been to get about 8 hours in.  It's not that I don't like the book, it's just that it's hard to get 37 hours of listening done without getting sidetracked somehow.  And listening in bed just doesn't work well - suddenly you wake up and you've missed 15-30 minutes of book. Wow, I had one of those soul-crushing sessions last night. Logged on and wound up in a room with a few guys from the same clan.  A couple of them were good, but this one guy, he was unreal. 30-40+ kills every round of team deathmatch.  I would simply step out of cover and I was dead. No place seemed safe. I went 2 or 3 rounds with 2-3 kills and 10+ deaths. Somehow my ratio didn't drop, and I took that as a cue to drop off an go play some Gears of War SP.  I don't understand how people can be that good.  I would watch the kill cam and I couldn't even see myself on the screen, yet the guy had me pinpointed and would drop me with 2 M16 bursts.  crybaby

Just finished. Primary impression was that it was very short.  I am surprised that Bungie didn't make the game a little more epic considering how they built it up. However, I thought the story hit a high note at the end of chapter 7 when

Spoiler for Hiden:
Miranda crashes into the control room and is prepared to sacrifice her life and kill the sarge to save humanity, but is then killed.

However then we descend into an extended battle with
Spoiler for Hiden:
the Flood
, my least favorite feature of the Halo universe and then end the game by
Spoiler for Hiden:
playing through the last level of the original Halo again.  Although I thought it was fun, at least.

And then what was up with
Spoiler for Hiden:
making you think Master Chief was dead until after the credits.  Was that necessary? How cliche can you get? And how exactly did a severed part of a ship have power for a hibernation pod?

It was pretty to look at and pretty fun, but I think Bungie blew an opportunity for something classic.

So there.

1 was fun and fresh at the time.  It still holds up relatively well.  2 was the best by far, imho (and the opinion of many critics).  3 was only marginally better than 1.

I highly doubt anyone would agree with me, but I'd say the Back to the Future movies qualify. They do in my opinion anyways. However, I was too young to see the first one by itself and have to wait for the sequels. The first one is more of a teen comedy, and if I was expecting mostly that from the sequels, I may have been disappointed. Some people say they got "too sci-fi." Well, whatever. I love them all. And I think the sequels improved upon the original.

Sorry, I just checked and it turns out that the order of quality for the BttF movies is 1, 3, 2, just as I had suspected. slywink

For the BttF movies, you can rank it (best to worst) 1,2,3 or even 2,1,3 but in no way can you say 3,2,1

The third movie was no way better than part 2. Impossible.

No, no, no. 2 is the worst.  It is a total mess with all the back and forth, and the reshoots of the first movie from different angles and the bad aging makeup. 1 is the best, and 3 is quite good, but not as good as 1.

I still really like this game, but am beginning to doubt if I'll finish the single player campaign. I am finding the restarting missions more and more frustrating. Almost any mission that involves gun play against a lot of combatants or chasing someone(s) down I fail at least a few times. I really wish I didn't always have to replay the whole mission over again. I did the "Deconstruction for beginners" mission a bunch of time, and riding that damn lift to the top of the building to snipe 3 people and then ride it down over and over again was driving me batty. Not to mention hailing a cab over and over again to get to the missions so I don't totally pull my hair out DRIVING to them repeatedly. ME WANT CHECKPOINTS IN ALL MISSIONS~!

Well, I think the important thing to remember is that the badguys are really not very aggressive.  There are a few cases where you'll suddenly find yourself getting flanked and not understand how, but in most cases, if you stay behind cover you can take your time picking guys off. In most cases you don't need to rush.  Even in cases where you appear to be chasing someone through a building, the guy is programmed to stop and let you catch up, then start moving again when you hit a trigger point.  This helped me a lot with the gun battles.

How far can you throw grenades? While I have benefited from the long toss grenade in COD4, there are few things more frustrating than getting taken out by a grenade that you know has simply been blindly tossed halfway across the map towards a common choke point. I think I would prefer grenades with more realistic weight. (by the way, I have had 2 very cool grenade experiences in COD4 recently - a 3 kill grenade tossed ino the cave on Creek and 2 on the run tosses into the tiny window in Grandma's House on Overgrown, both resulting in kills).

was Shipment an add on map for the 360?  I've played on it a bunch of times with the PC version.  it's a fairly small map, and it really stinks for your K/D ratio when a server that allows 50+ players has it in it's rotation and the server is full.

I think Shipment came with the original game, it just doesn't get used for team deathmatch because it's so small.
7991  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / What do you consider "camping"? on: June 03, 2008, 04:46:24 PM
[This thread will use examples from COD4]

As I am still a relative multiplayer n00b, I am trying to do my best to be a good online citizen and not do things looked down upon by the (co-ed) fraternity of online gamers. Such as using a grenade launcher in close quarters, bunny hopping and "camping".

So yesterday I came up with a way to play Broadcast that worked really well (I went 14-3 without any heli or airstrike kills). My load was an RPD with claymores/stopping power/deep impact. I went to the door to the parking lot near the dumpster and planted a claymore inside.  I then went through the bathroom and manned the large doorway to catch any enemies moving through the lobby from any direction.  I would periodically go back through the bathroom to make sure no one was sneaking up behind me.  Every once in a while I'd a get a "+10" meaning someone had tripped the claymore, and I'd go replace it with the second one. Rinse, repeat and I racked up a lot of kills.

Now, in my opinion, this is not camping - I picked out a part of the building to defend from enemy attack and I was actively seeking enemies to kill.  To me, camping is going into the bombed out building on Backlot and hiding behind the couch. Or crouching on top of the stairs to nowhere on District. These spots have no view of the battlefield at all and only result in kills when someone walks into your crosshairs. They also have no real strategic value to the team, because they are not holding part of a line of defense.

What do you think? Or is the whole think moot because claymores are noobish?

But I will continue to use martyrdom on Wetworks and Vacant, because you're stupid not to biggrin

There are 5 weapons you can unlock prior to the games release btw.  If you're planning on playing it's worth looking into it at the game's official site.  One is for preordering, one for signing up for the newsletter, one for ranking to max in the demo, don't recall where the other two are.

I need a weapon unlocking 101 rundown.  Do I have this right?

Five, and only five, weapons you can unlock prior to release?
Only one of which is from preordering?  (which one?)
Every other weapon unlocked through the game proper, but the aforementioned five you won't get until you hit the level cap?

http://badcompany.ea.com/page/dynpid/8616/

there's the info on how to get each of the five weapons.

One is for pre-ordering and you get the code when you pre-order.
One is for signing up for their newsletter and you get the code when you do.
One is for hitting max rank in the demo and you get the code when you do.
One is for hitting 'veteran' status in the full retail game.
One is for checking your stats on their stats page after release.

The stats are like the PC version of BF2 btw, it's pretty similar to what H3 did.

I thought that you got 5 weapons unlocked by buying the gold pack or getting the top multiplayer rank.  Are there actually 10 unlockable weapons,  or are the "find the five" or whatever the same as the gold weapons?

So how do you get the demo when you pre-order?  They are supposed to email me something? Is there some secret link on Live?

Yes there is, instructions will be in the email.  It's the same method that you will get any beta or early demo as well. Super Sekret way to get stuph on xbl slywink

Well then they need to send me my code chop chop! Stupid Gamestop, they probably sold my code used for $5 to some kid.

Terminator kicked ass.

T2 is the best action movie of all time, imho.

Yes, and T3 wasn't bad, but not as good as T2.

I think his doing "Santa Clause is Comin to Town" was the total end from him for me.

He not only ruined the traditional song in his own version, but his version spawned copycat versions that have now replaced the standard in terms of popularity.

um, I'm pretty sure Bruce's version of the "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" is basically a cover of the Crystals version, so don't blame him for that.
