I have found there to be a surprising amount of team killers in the demo. Particularly guys who want to use the artillery and shoot the guy in the seat, but others that are also just being jerks.  Not sure if there is a kick function, but at least there are the Live controls so you can avoid playing with that person again.

7963  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [XBOX Live stats] COD4 is a juggernaut on: June 19, 2008, 08:32:11 PM
Get it? "Juggernaut"?  ninja

Anywaaaaaay, GTAIV managed to be the be the #1 played game on Live for a whole 4 weeks before relinquishing its spot back to COD4 (and Halo 3). The Battlefield demo is pretty impressive coming in at #4 for two weeks straight, which implies it may take over the top spot for a little while.  But I have a feeling COD4 will take the top spot back again. Personally, I think COD4 is a much easier (and enjoyable) game to pick up and play for a quick session without friends, and I think that's why it will continue to be people's go-to game.

Hostess fruit pies, usually lemon.  Also known as "death pockets" (don't read the nutrition info on the label), hence the "once-in-a-while".

Oh, and the cereal that actually needs a warning label is corn pops.  I know more than one person that has started bleeding from the mouth while eating those things.

Firstly, we're discussing believability.  IMO, just because there are stories about a mythical ark or cup, it does not make it any more believable than surviving a nuclear blast.  I'm sorry.  It just doesn't work that way.

Sure it does.

Magic voodoo relic does things from magic voodoo power, so magic voodoo eye closing or whatever is a plausible defense in the film's world.

There's no magic voodoo behind the nuclear bomb in the movie, just like there's no magic voodoo behind the bullets fired from the guns.  Indy has the knowledge to combat hexes, curses, and other assorted oddities from ancient lore but he can't speak an incantation to stop bullets or nuclear explosions.

Exactly - certain things are accepted of the world that Indiana Jones lives in. Primarily these revolve around the truth of legends. It's the same as if I go to see Star Wars - I don't care that Darth Vader can strangle men without touching them because it is accepted that the force exists in that world.  But people die in the Indiana Jones world from typical things that could kill you in our world - bullets (all the movies), falls from great heights (Temple of Doom), propeller blades (Raiders), etc. These are the rules of the world that the previous movies have laid the groundwork for. So when the movie suddenly breaks those rules it has created, the audience member feels disoriented.

I'm not one to let something like the fact that they wouldn't survive those waterfalls bother me.  If I can believe in aliens and arks of the covenant, I can believe they would survive a waterfall.

Exactly.  I don't see how that's any less believable than a magical box that kills anyone with their eyes open, a cup that heals any ailment and provides immortality, albeit limited, but immortaility nonetheless, or a dude that can pull out your beating heart and still keeping you alive long enough to burn you to death.

Yeah, the notions of surviving 3 waterfalls or a nuclear explosion are so farfetched compared to the above... Roll Eyes

Because all of the things you mentioned are rooted in fantasy/bible-lore and a waterfall and a nuclear bomb are reality. We are ok with Mola Rahm (sp?) ripping someone's heart out because he is supposed to be some sort of shaman who is granted powers from Kali and the magic stones or whatever. The grail/ark have stories behind them. A nuclear bomb, however, is a nuclear bomb.  There is nothing provided in the story or history to make us believe that Indy has the power to survive a nuclear blast.

Final boss battle in Gears of War.

+1.  I think this is one of the worst boss battles I have played.  Story-wise it's bad because we don't really even know who General RAAM is.  He shows up in 2 cutscenes the entire game to do nothing more than kill someone.  Never says a word, and his name isn't even spoken, I don't think.  Gameplay-wise, every other boss battle in the game required you to solve a puzzle - make the Berzerker break stuff so you can use the Hammer of Dawn on him, shoot the Corpser in a certain spot to expose his mouth, etc.  But here, all you have to do his shoot the guy a bunch of times, and there isn't even any indication of how close you are to finishing him off.  You can hardly even see if you've done any damage to him, save for an occasional blood spray if you are zoomed in the the sniper rifle. Horrible.

Very surprised they left out Xen.

Totally agree on the Flood, with the exception that their intro scene in the original Halo is really a great moment in gaming.

Didn't realize there was so much hate for the Water Temple.  That is exactly where I got stuck when I played OOT on VC, and I haven't gone back to finish it off.

7974  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Indy IV: thoughts, reviews, spoilers galore!! on: June 17, 2008, 03:25:25 PM
Finally saw this on Sunday. I agree with most of the sentiments here, with the exception of the "omgz Spielberg/Lucas raped my childhood" posts.

Spoiler for Hiden:
the good:

The action - several Indy-worth action bits, like warehouse/rocket fight, the school chase and the jungle chase (with the exception of the monkey swinging. What were they thinking?)

The humor - it didn't take itself too seriously and was definitely in the "Last Crusade" mold. I am surprised that some people don't like "Last Crusade". I've always thought it was a solid number 2 (maybe even 1a) in the series.  It's extremely entertaining and it has held up very well (just watched a couple of weeks ago). I never liked "Temple of Doom" much and watching it recently, it felt so sloppy and really dragged at points.

The nostalgia - having Marion in the movie was great.

the bad:

The exposition - this has been mentioned.  If you go back and watch the older movies, you don't find a lot of scenes where there is just talking. If you remember the early scene with Indy and the govt reps at the school, Indy gets up on the chalkboard and draws up the lost ark story so we have a good idea of what he is talking about. Even in Temple of Doom (which I am not a big fan of), the story of the Thugee cult is interspersed within the dinner scene, so it doesn't drag.  However, several times in this movie, people are just sitting around talking. The scene in the diner where Mutt tells his life story was particularly bad, because he starts talking about "the Ox", almost like we should know who this character is.

The suspension of disbelief - there are plenty of fantastic things that happen in the Indiana Jones movies, but some of the events in this one were too much to not roll your eyes at. Falling out of a plane on a raft is one thing - you could conceive of it working. They even tried it on MythBusters.  Falling over three successive waterfalls in a row? You know they should be dead, if not from being crushed by the duck boat, then by crashing on the rocks. Mine car race - not likely, but at least a little believable. Surviving a nuclear blast? No way. They just went overboard.

The nostalgia - the other side of this is the things that were not done well. I like Marion when they first introduced her, but for the rest of the movie she just kind of hung out there with this weird grin on her face.  She should have been harder edged like the original Marion and warmed up slowly to Indy as the movie went on. I thought the Connery bit was awkward.  It almost implied that Connery himself were dead, instead of just the character.  And I agree that Denholm Elliot bit was poorly done.  Wouldn't it have been better if we saw the car crash into the statue from the statue's rear and then pan up to see it was Brody who saved Indy, even in death? Why cut his head off?

The crystal skull - that prop was huge and looked awful, especially being lugged around. I don't have a problem with an aliens plotline, but it could have been done a lot better.  I still don't understand that if the skeletons of 13 aliens have the power to take off in a spaceship, how exactly did they allow one of their heads to get stolen?

Overall, I enjoyed it, but it felt...clunky.  I went in with lowered expectations, but it was hard to really enjoy it, because you just have higher standards for Indiana Jones.

I don't know how you got through the whole game and only reached level 20.  I think I reached the level cap my first time through....or the high 40s at least.

I can think of a number of reasons why this might be the case.

1. I gave up on the escort missions pretty early on, although a bunch of times I got the points for having survivors join my party but let them go off to get eaten because I couldn't be troubled with babysitting them.

2. I only killed 2 psychopaths that weren't required by the storyline:
Spoiler for Hiden:
the fat female cop and the cult leader

3.
Spoiler for Hiden:
I didn't discover the car and motorcycle until the bomb case, where the game leads you to them. If you have access to them early in the game you can run down a whole lot of zombies.

4. I spent the last 9 hours or so of game time literally standing on the helipad.
Spoiler for Hiden:
the few times I tried venturing out in the mall I was quickly captured by the soldiers, so I gave up.  I left the XBOX on and did some chores and came back in time to watch the aforementioned buggy ending.

5. As already mentioned, I am simply not as awesome as ATB.

Spoiler for Hiden:
Creslip's
which I didn't do my first time through and found some weapons that I had never used before. There was some entertainment there, but when I went back to try some of the escort missions, they were just as unfun as before.  I finished my first game at level 20, so I think if I do go back and play it again I will just do the cases and psychopath bits
Spoiler for Hiden:
as well as running down zombies in the car

I'm playing this through for the first time and loving it.  Is there anything non-spoilerish you can tell me to avoid the same problem.  I'm in the middle of day 2, just got back from getting medicine for the wounded agent and am level 18 or so.

Assuming you are planning to complete all the cases, just don't save your game after you get an ending unless you see that you've unlocked "overtime mode". So as not too spoil, I will let you figure out on your own what needs to be done to get to that point.

I was stupid and saved after I watched the ending and I could only start the game over again.  No, let me pass the buck and blame Capcom for only giving one save slot. I guess I understand why there is only one save slot, but that doesn't mean I have to like it.

I liked the game enough, but I basically gave up on the escort missions once the hallways got crowded with zombies - I'm still not clear on how those are supposed to get easier, but I guess I could look at a guide.  I also thought the shooting controls were absolutely horrible and made the psychopath fights more frustrating than fun. I also apparently completely missed some of the more powerful guns.

Well maybe not, but they didn't think one of the Dead Rising endings through at all.  I got through all the cases and went to the heliport at noon on the third day.  The one thing I didn't do was
Spoiler for Hiden:
go back to Isabela after the last case, which I was apparently supposed to do.  No wonder I had nothing to do for so long!
But regardless, I was there when the helicopter was supposed to pick me up.  But instead, I get this lame cutscene that shows that I was not at the heliport.  What?!

I didn't really care to play the whole game over again, so I just watched all the cutscenes on YouTube.

RTS - I am not quick enough. If I had a dollar for every time I have installed Starcraft and not gotten past the 5th or 6th mission...

4x/complex TBS/anything involving micromanagement - I just don't have the patience. There's only so much micromanagement I can do before I get ADD. Perfect example from 2 nights ago. I loaded up Icewind Dale because I had never installed it and felt like playing something on the PC.  Found out that it forces you to create 6 characters.  I figured out to autoroll the stats but I still had to choose names and voices and had to do all 6 characters separately.  I wound up naming them things like "Fighter Guy" and "Ranger Gal".  The only TBS I have ever gotten anywhere with is Combat Mission, because it only requires you to do one thing, and this is tell your guys where to fight.  No resource management, no politics, no nothing.

Yeah, I've got it set to "wide" and the tv reports that it is receiving the 480p signal. I've read some things suggesting that some HDTVs have a 16:10 ratio, and that's what causes the space on the sides, but according to the Vizio site my tv is native 16:9.

I just put 10 or so minutes into Resident Evil 4.  It filled the same amount of screen as Madden, but looked a bit better. Still quite a big jaggy in spots.
7987  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / using the Wii with a 16:9 tv? on: June 11, 2008, 01:47:26 AM
I bought a new tv a little while back for my consoles (a Vizio 32" LCD).  My 360 looks great on it and HD signal looks great on it. SD looks crappy, but that's ok, because the TV is really going to be used primarily for video games.

However, tonight I finally got around to hooking up my Wii to it, using the component cables.  I set the output to "ED 480p" and widescreen.  The menus looked pretty low resolution, but I figured that could just be the menus, but then I put in Madden 07 and it looked really crappy.  Incredibly jaggy and the picture didn't fill in the whole screen. Not like it was at 4:3, it was wider than that - the picture looked like it had the right dimensions, but it left about 2 inches of black on the left and right.

Does anyone know if I missed a setting somewhere, or is this just how the Wii looks on HD?

I agree with what most people here are saying about regen and fancy spells or tech in sci-fi/fantasy settings.  Realistic settings are more of a quandry. I have always disliked the idea of health packs in modern/real history games - it's not like if I was shot I could find a box filled with medical supplies and I'd be ready to go in seconds. Regen suffers from the same problem in that it is unrealistic. Towards the other end of the spectrum you have the Xbox-style Rainbow Six games where you get about 4 shots before dying, and the older PC Rainbow Six games where you might get partially incapacitated with a shot and often one-shot killed.  In order to have a one-shot kill game the enemies can't act in the same way that they do in COD4, so it's paced a lot differently. If you want a game where there is a lot of running and gunning, you just have to put up with the unrealism.

Well, I think the important thing to remember is that the badguys are really not very aggressive.  There are a few cases where you'll suddenly find yourself getting flanked and not understand how, but in most cases, if you stay behind cover you can take your time picking guys off. In most cases you don't need to rush.  Even in cases where you appear to be chasing someone through a building, the guy is programmed to stop and let you catch up, then start moving again when you hit a trigger point.  This helped me a lot with the gun battles.

That's good to know.  I am in the same boat.  First GTA game, and I am sucking badly.  The get in a car and chase missions are just killing me.  I usually end up damaging myself to no end or the opponent gets away...I really do wish there were save spots or an option to save in mission.

Yes, the chase missions do require you to go at a faster pace then you'd like at times. In a lot of cases, though, if you just start off slow and concentrate on not hitting anything, it's ok if you are not right on the guy's tail.  You can always catch up on straightaway after following the radar.  In almost all of those chases, the target will reach a point at which they will crash or leave the vehicle, so I concentrated on just staying close enough to keep the mission going. You'll also get to see some fun scripted events if you do the whole chase, and you'll get better at the driving.

There are a few other things too, not the least of which is the horrible lag. If they get the lag figured out, maybe I will Goozex it after release, but my new game dollar is a little too valuable right now to get in on this.

 crybaby

I'm sure the lag will be fixed. COD4 couldn't even be played on release or at Christmas...but you're right about communications. If no one is talking on your squad it's a lonely place to be...

I just watched the "Harvest Day" preview on live and they have all these great shots of squads working together with armor and coordinated attacks on objectives with Support guys running behind the line tossing out health.  That would be a very cool game to play. But with the way they have the communications set up the only way a game like that would be played would be with people planning beforehand, and even so, as soon as the plan broke down, no one would know.

I know there was a command position in BF 2, although I never played it.  That would be a good compromise - have one guy that can hear all squads and see them on the map and have him relay orders or status.

I'm in the same boat.  I played a little while as Assault yesterday, then switched over to Demolitions. They have a shotgun (one shot kills) and a rocket launcher that I could use to blow stuff up. Joined Wonderpug in an in-progress match through Live and I was wondering what you guys were talking about with the lag. Turned out we were on an unranked server.
