Wow, did I have a brutal GTA IV session last night.  I got on with the intention of quickly getting done with "3 Leaf Clover" because I had tried it 3 or 4 times unsuccessfully.  An hour and 45 minutes later, I finally finished the stupid mission.  Some of the highlights:

1. Getting killed while jacking a car to drive to the bank
2. Getting killed in the alleys because I didn't realize a cop had run right up next to me
3. Getting killed in the subway station
4. Getting killed getting the getaway car
5. Losing the mission because I walked too far away from Packie and the other guy!
6. Damaging my car so much on the way to the bank that it simply stopped working on the bridge's on-ramp.  It didn't catch on fire, it simply stopped and wouldn't start up again.  I had to get out of the car and jack someone else's car.  Luckily my accomplices followed.

Then I did the mission with Packie's brother (when you meet him in the park) and proceeded to stupidly get myself killed about 5 times, and I still haven't finished the mission.

Outside of managing to finish "Clover", the most productive thing I accomplished in the game over the 2 hours was boost my ratings with Kiki, LJ, Roman and Brucie.  crybaby

Can some one with the guide please post the Dates Name, their Perks, and places of interest to take them. with all the juggling you have to do with missions and keeping up with friends, It is becoming a pain getting a date and taking them somewhere they don't like then rejected.   Also do certain location give more of a boost in friendship points than others?

Yeah, it is.

Yes, it most definitely is.

PLEASE HAPPEN.

If you are curious what it is like, it's kind of a Zelda clone when it comes to gameplay, but with a much more modern and interesting story and it's a bit more compact.

didn't they have a black isle collection that had all those games but also included planescape at one point on gogamer?

I wouldn't be surprised if they did. But I checked through GoGamer entirely and came up with nothing.

On the flip side, I double-dipped with my Planescape - I own the big box somewhere, and I got a DVD only version for $5 one day. biggrin

I have a set that has Baldur's Gate, Planescape Torment and Fallout 2, all with full color maps and printed manuals.  I don't think it was meant for distribution in the US, but Gogamer was selling it for a while.  Sadly, the best I have done is get past disc 1 of BG a couple of times and about 30 minutes of Planescape.  I have a huge backlog of top-flight older PC games that I just have never managed to get going on - BG2, all the Mysts, Fallout, Ghost Recon, NOLF 1&2, Monkey Island 3&4...

For LJ's package missions short cuts definitely help if you can find them (though I don't think I needed it on the first package mission).  One thing I didn't know, however, is that evidently you don't have to use the junkers he leaves you with.  Supposedly you can hop into your own quicker and better handling vehicle and still complete the missions.

I thought the package was in the car? If I get in and get out do I bring the package with me?

yep

Now you tell me.  I did them all with the default car.  Although I only had a problem with one of the timed ones where you have to deliver the package to a guy under an overpass.  I kept sliding around trying to get in there, and he'd leave, but I finally did it.

I know I am guilty of this offense.  I tend to only get to sit down in 1 hour blocks during the week, maybe a little before dinner and a little after, so I tend to stick to singleplayer stuff.  I just earned my Burnout License in Burnout Paradise yesterday, so I will probably be back on GTA now and will be more likely to join.

It's just a really nice way to show your love and commitment to your significant other, and a signal to others around you how much you love and are committed to your significant other.  It really doesn't matter what marriage meant in the 16th century, it matters what it means to you and your SO in the here and now.

If you want to get into a debate over whether married couples should have tax benefits over non-married couples, that's a completely different thread.

Is there a way to earn some solid cash? I got arrested last night and lost all my guns. Buying those suckers back was expensive as hell and I'd rather not cheat until I get certain achievements the honest way. smile

I sometimes hunt down the "Most Wanted" criminals off the police computer when I want some easy money and ammo.  So far, they've been ridiculously easy to kill.

But yeah, missions are really the way to go for cash.

Do those missions (the police computer missions) actually pay?  Or do you just get the cash off the bad guys?  I've done a bunch of them, and I have not found them to be a reliable source of funds.

Yes, you can get cash off the bad guys.  And more importantly you get credit towards an achievement slywink

From what I am reading, people have only been able to get to work if they are not on a mission.  I don't know if that is a bug or if it is as designed.  I have tried it twice and nothing happened either time.  I know one time I did I was on a mission, but I can't recall the other time.

I've tried it on mission and off multiple times and have never noticed anything changing.

There are posts out there that says its a bug, but nothing official that I can find.

You know what suddenly struck me as I was walking down the steps to my office?  GTAIV accurately models walking down steps.  It actually has annoyed me in-game because you always slow down when you hit steps, but I can't recall another game that has a realistic animation when walking down steps.  Is there?

Last I played COD4 I was getting bogged down with guns I'm just not very good with, because that's all I have left to level up. I've been stuck right around .74 k/d for quite a while. I did find that I can use a shotgun ok on Chinatown.

7977  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Burnout Paradise : retail version impressions on: May 12, 2008, 07:43:24 PM
There's no thread for impressions of the retail version, so...

I finally got online with this the other night with a bunch of friends and it was a blast. There was 5 of us, so we spent most of our time doing the 5 person challenges, and in between challenges we were experimenting with stunts (seeing who could do the best flatspin or if we could fly over the crane in the airfield, etc.), and the time just flew by.  The online is going to get so much better in June when they add Marked Man, Stunt Run and Road Rage to the online events, because while the challenges are a lot of fun, once you are done with them, you've lost some guidance in what to do during your session.  The racing definitely has its weaknesses, but I'm ok with that because the other stuff is so much fun.  If I want to race I can always play a different game.

The one thing that is little silly about the challenges is the restriction by number of people.  If you have 5 friends online together and you want to work on your 4 person challenges you have to send someone packing or just not do them.  They are adding 70 more challenges in the June release as well, which is great.  With cycles and new islands, this game should stay in our multiplayer rotation for a while.

Playing this on Saturday night actually pulled me away from GTA on Sunday because I got the urge to go in and make some more progress.  I'm now 51% done, with 39 cars. I've found all the billboards and crashes (without a guide, yay me!), but I have so far been unable to find the very last super jump in White Mountain and also am missing 1 event, which is surprising because I figure I must have gone through every intersection on the map by now.  Right now I'm concentrating on doing all the Burning Routes for the cars I have, which will should leave me with a lot less regular events to do to get my Burnout License.

Personally I like the screws that support both - one axis of the phillips head extends to the edges of the screw so you can use whichever screwdriver you have handy.  Also helpful when the phillips head part gets damaged (it basically becomes a cone with nothing to grip onto) which seems to happen to me a lot.

I think when you get a call during a mission it's part of the mission.  For example, during "Have a heart", Little Jacob calls up to go do something, but I think the purpose was just for Niko to tell a joke.  I didn't see the "minus" icon for Jacob show up.  However, if you get a call on the way to a race or optional thing then you will get dinged if you turn the person down.

I've got lots of love for the classic 80s cabinets, but I'm surprised there isn't more love here for the early 90s stuff.  I mean, that two screen X-men sidescroller could have six players at the same time!  That was huge!

Some of us are old folks (relatively) and were in college then and trips to the arcade had become infrequent. I think mostly what I remember from then is Mortal Kombat, which they had in one of the student unions and was very popular. There was also a Rampart cabinet in one of the dining halls.  I have gotten to the arcade more in the past 7 or 8 years because now there are places like Dave and Busters and Jillians, but it's hard to call any of those new games favorites. They are more about giving you an experience you can't get on a console (firehoses, moving cabinets, etc.) and once you are paying over a dollar to play a game it starts to get a little silly. I did have an 8 person race with friends in one of those linked together racing games in Vegas one time - that was fun.

It was funny - right after I finished the race with Brucie I took the new car back to the safehouse in Bohan and parked it, but the exact same car (different color) was parked right behind the parking space. I broke into it and pulled it in behind the car I just won so I could save the nice yellow one for races. I took the second one out on a mission or something and wound up crashing it, exactly what I expected would happen.  Went back to get the yellow car and I called up Brucie to do the next race (either the 2nd or 3rd of 20, depending on if the mission counts). On the second lap, I hit a car on a turn and put the car on its side. No matter what I did, I couldn't get it right side up, so I lost that one too.

I figured I would come across another, but strangely often when you want a car of a certain kind, there's often none to be found.  I wanted to hit a stunt jump that's up by the docks in Bohan, but the place is just filled with minivans and crappy sedans that can't make the jump.  I ran around for blocks looking for a decent car or a bike. More often I see good cars when I am driving around and don't need one or am on a mission.

Yeah, I've tried to abuse the game's "spawn the same cars already onscreen" mechanic by just snagging duplicates of my snazzy ride and leaving the origina in relative safety but it doesn't work as often as I would like.

I don't sweat the Turismo though- one of those seems to always be present next door to Mikhail's house so I can always grab another one pretty easily.

Ah, that's good to know.  I remember every time I did a mission for him there were always 2 cars in his driveway: a nice one at the end and and even nicer one parked behind.  I never thought to go back there after...you know.

I generally keep a Turismo and the car that you get for doing the race (forget it's name) on standby for times when I feel like I need something high speed with good maneuverability.  I want to snag a Banshee but the only time I've seen one in the wild was right in the middle of a mission.  I did *drive* a Banshee for one of the car jacking missions but there was no way I could find to steal it for my own.  Presumably now that I've unlocked Algonquin I'll have easier access to some better vehicles.

Huh, I really enjoyed that mission.  Ever since I saw all of the elevated tracks I had been hoping that the game would give us a variation on the classic chase from "The French Connection". Though the chasing the train thing made sense to me- if you just go directly to the stop you don't know if the train has already come or gone.  Also (and this seemed strictly for gaming reasons), I don't believe that train made it's normal stops.  It looked to me like it blew right through Hove Station.

AFAIK, you don't have to chase the car- you can intercept them in the station before they get to their car.  And I don't think I would classify it as a "chase"- for me, at least, it was a rather easy follow mission.

Yeah I went combat shotgun on them in the station.

Same for me - the guys never even made it down the stairs.

Came upon something last night that seemed like some poor QA, but it was funny.  I wanted to get the achievement for losing a 4-star wanted level, so I drove on to the airport runway.  To get away, I summoned a helicopter and had Brucie take me to the top of some tall building in Algonquin.  I tell him to land, but it turns out there is already a helicopter on the helipad. He lands on top of the already parked helicopter, knocking it over, and crashes on the roof. Both helicopters are now inoperable. And the trip didn't even lose the cops, I had to get down to street level and grab a car to do that.

hahaha, nice one

an easy way to get the 4 star achievement is to find a boat and drive it to the airport.  go out on the runway, then get back in the boat and drive away.

Also, stealing a helicopter is a really easy way to get the "one man army" achievement.  I think there are no fly zones and once you trigger them, you can just fly around for 5 minutes.  I stole one from the helicopter tour place. Unfortunately, I'm not sure where the no fly zones are.  My guess is that I triggered it by flying too low over Alderney, which I haven't unlocked yet.  Probably if you fly low in the airport as well.

OK, I reeeeeally suck at this game.  I cannot get past the damn Russian Revolution mission.  I keep getting shot to hell.  WHoever thought haf baked cover controls means facing 35 freaking guys all specifically placed to put you in a crossfire was fun needs to be slapped.

Is Little Jacob helping you?  That makes the mission pretty much a breeze.

Is it possible that he doesn't help you?  I was wondering about that when it happened.  I thought that was just the way the mission was.

I really like the concept behind these games, but the reviews are pretty average. Is there fun to be had with either?

(Yes, I know there is a sequel to Stuntman and it is supposed to be better, but I am specifically asking about these last-gen titles).

This is something I wish xbox live would do - give a list of every game you've played and playtime on that game.  I don't think it would make me play less - I am most interested in if I am getting good value for my money.  But maybe that is exactly what MS doesn't want you to be thinking about.

Yes, the Wii tells you on a daily basis, but doesn't allow you to add up the time unless you write down each day's total and manually calculate (which I actually did when I was done with Mario Galaxy, because I was curious).

OK, my question: is there any way besides shooting to kill the pigeons?  I've tried knifing and I can't get it to work.  It just seems weird that the developers would require you to set off a wanted level every time you find one of the stupid things.

I've been able to fire off my gun without getting a wanted level. Just make sure there's no cops in the area. And yes, I know - easier said than done.

Believe me, I've tried.  Even though I think there aren't cops nearby, it turns out there are.  I've managed it a couple of times (like finding one in a tunnel).  I don't know why I'm even bothering, though.  There's no way I'm going to be able to find all 200 of the silly things.  I'm just kind of picking them off as they find them.

The game as a whole is great.  The last act sucks.

But any way, HL isn't just a shooter.  It's a story-driven action adventure game with puzzles.  So you have to look at it that way.  And consider the fact that it's 10 years old.  Half Life 2 is great (IMHO) but a similar idea.  It's not Call of Duty.
