I actually really liked the flashbacks, even though at times I couldn't remember if the stories were contradicting themselves (I thought there were a bunch of things that happened when Rusty was in college that didn't fit in with last season but I would have to go back and watch the older episodes to be sure). I thought the Quizboy/Phantom Limb origin show was fantastic. The season did have a different feel to it, I will admit, but I fully enjoyed it.

After 3 seasons, the show has managed to stay pretty much on track, as opposed to shows like Brak and Sealab, which once had plots and then turned to nonsense when they seemed to run out of ideas. ATHF, which was never really about anything in the first place, has even slipped into this mode.

And yes, Metalocalypse is genius.

32" LCD HDTV with component cables and it depends on the game. Metroid Prime 3 looked great, Godfather looked pretty muddy. Resident Evil 4 looks kind of muddy. Progressive mode on Eternal Darkness (Gamecube) actually looked pretty good. Unfortunately I got my tv after I played Super Mario Galaxy, but I've heard it looks quite good.

How about when I call in Ewan to pick up a find or deliver anything he sometimes vanishes into thin air before delivering it? As such, I lose an item/vehicle/whatever and have to call him back in?

This happened to me once but I found out that he had been shot down. Don't know if that's what happened to you, but it can happen.

7966  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Let's talk about "The Bunt" on: September 14, 2008, 10:08:57 PM
It kind of depends, but that's fairly accurate. The sacrifice bunt is still used in the MLB, but it is usually reserved for players in the lower spots of the batting order. The pitcher will just about always do it in 0 or 1 out situations, and you'll sometimes see a #2 batter do it late in the game when a single run is needed to go ahead. Generally, it's considered a waste for 3-4-5 hitters to bunt because of their hitting ability.

In obvious bunting situations, the batter will put the bat out right away, most often when it is a pitcher.  The cases when the batter puts the bat out at the last second is usually when trying to reach base on a bunt single, rather than making a sacrifice, or perhaps during a suicide squeeze (when there is a runner on 3rd attempting to score).

As far as the return to the base mission goes:
Spoiler for Hiden:
'Borrow' the chopper that comes to attack you. After a few seconds, you'll be disguised as one of the enemy, so it's safe traveling until you arrive back home.

Yes, absolutely - I feel like that was the one point in the game I have played so far where the developers actually intended you to do something a specific way.  To try to drive back is incredibly hard because 1) you are likely to get blown up coming down the hill by tanks and copters and 2) the distance by land is very far to cover in the time allotted and 3) there is no real land route back due to the blind spots in Fiona's radar - you have to go off-road and in weird directions to get there.

BTW, it was during this part of the game, after a lot of wasted time, that I realized you had to have your reticule on a copter to grapple it.  icon_redface Much frustration was had as I ran in circles underneath an attacking chopper yelling, "where's the stupid grapple icon!?"

Going up the hill I started out trying to take out each outpost on the way up, but after dying many times, I finally just stole a jeep at the bottom of the hill, after which you are disguised.  You can make it almost to the top of the hill before losing your cover, so you have already blown past the heavy weapons (tanks) and then you just need to take out the 2 nearby AA guns.

7975  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: [360] Madden '09 Online League on: September 11, 2008, 08:36:08 PM
I've been playing for about an hour the last couple of nights, but I am on the east coast so I am probably off before you are on. I am playing horribly, so it is probably for the best.  My Madden IQ dropped below 500 during last night's game although it managed to crawl back up to 500 by the end. I am determined to make this the year I finally "get" Madden. I love football, and I understand all the basic concepts and terms, but it seems to really enjoy Madden you need to understand the details.  For example, I know the difference between "strong side" and "weak side", and the difference between "the flat" and "underneath", but I couldn't tell you the difference between a Cover 2 and a Cover 3, and how to react when you see one or other. So I'm usually just running plays with no real understanding of why they went wrong or right.  So I broke down and bought my first ever strategy guide - it's not everything I could have hoped for (a lot of it is team-specific, they leave out the actual button names to be generic for all versions and some of the pictures are so small as to be useless), but it has descriptions of all the offensive and defensive play types, info on how to recognize them and recommendations on when to use them. So I am digesting a little bit each day and I am going to go into practice mode and set up against various defensive formations and see how they look and react. Hopefully I will not feel too frustrated trying to learn in all and wind up giving it up.

7979  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Stupid question: what is a hopper? on: September 10, 2008, 12:37:33 AM
I think it is definitely playlist related. Here is a quote from one of the developers:

The biggest thing that I can think of off the top of my head: how we set up our [matchmaking setup] hoppers. We changed that quite a bit based on feedback. We'll eventually have cleaner, more pure hoppers, by and large. There will still be one or two that are more mixed. But the feedback on the hoppers in the beta was really quite clear -- it was, "Why am I still playing Team Slayer in an objective-game hopper?" Hey, good point -- why are you playing Team Slayer so much in an objective-game hopper? So we fixed that, and we're paying close attention to that.

I guess it is the way that Bungie refers to playlists, but I haven't heard any other developers refer to them that way.

Have any good games had review embargoed? Did GTAIV have reviews embargoed or is this basically a confession by the publisher that the game sucks? Or can this happen if they make a deal with magazine guaranteeing first review?

I think the way they could have made this work would have been to make it like Dynasty Warriors: Star Wars. Just put waves upon waves of stormtroopers attacking so that the Jedi could get overwhelmed.  Actually that probably wouldn't be very Star Warsy.

I don't know, I thought the demo had promise, I don't know why they'd have to go and add all sorts of non canon stuff in. Have him fight more and bigger enemies, make puzzles, platforming, whatever. Have him learning new powers as he goes along (he is an apprentice, after all). Seems like they could have made it work.

Ah, OK. Although I can't say I agree with that design choice. If you are good at Lone Wolf, you're going to be good at Team Slayer, because being good at either requires the same skills. I was trying out the big map team game tonight, and there were guys on there that clearly didn't belong playing with rank 2s and 3s (they were too good), but just hadn't ranked up on that playtype yet.
7989  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: [9/5/08] Halo 3 - Geezers Gone Wild: The Reunion Tour! on: September 07, 2008, 09:02:09 PM
So, playing on Friday inspired me to dabble a little more with Halo 3 multi, and I played some Lone Wolf today raising my rank and skill a bit.

I had a question though - I was always playing with people whose skill points were similar to mine (1-7 or so), but sometimes I would look at their service record and it would say that they had maximum skill rankings in the 30's. How did their skill level go down so much?

I just started playing this past weekend, and I died A LOT in the second world where you're hunting down Hod.  Is there anything else that you can do for EXP and such to level up before going up against a bunch of overpowered robots?  I got my ass handed to me so much that I almost quit playing.  Especially since you can't skip the Valkerye scene when you die.
Levelling up does little other than make new and better loot available to you.  Enemies will always be the level of the highest player in the game (co-op or single play).  So you can't out-level an area.  Ice Forest is a grinder, then World Serpent is relatively normal, and Helheim is somewhat difficult.

Is that only the first time through?  When I finished my game I started over with my character and I was one-shot killing the monsters in the first area.

CeeKay - thought about bringing down some more ordinance? A nice attack chopper might help, along with you manning the anti-tank guns that surround the church. Or drop an anti-tank 'summon power' (as I think the mission recommends). I won the mission without any of those (short of borrowing a tank or two), but by the skin of my teeth (the church pretty much exploded the moment I got the 'checkpoint updated' notice).

I really didn't have a problem with that mission - IIRC there are recoilless rifles on both sides of the church you can use and they drop RPGs for you. I only wound up dying when I got to the stadium and got blown up by rpgs from the stands.

Just had a strange thing happen - I was on a mission and called in an helicopter delivery (delivery of an actual helicopter). It's taking forever, and the helicopter doesn't arrive, even though I was told it was on its way. Later on, I drop down to a lower area, and sure enough, there's Ewan, standing by the wreck of the helicopter. He had gotten shot down, but strangely enough the game didn't remove the character.

Had a very cool moment while taking out a stone bridge.  I put 3 bundles of C4 down and pointed the camera towards me so I could see the explosion as I was running from it. As I approached the stairs leading down the bridge, I pulled the trigger, not really knowing how big the explosion would be. The entire bridge, right up to the stairs, comes crashing down just as I get my foot on the first step. I just made it.
