Woohoo! I finally got my "Be the best" achievement/"High Card" trophy, and it was totally legit. It was a 500+ point effort that included two crate destructions. I almost had the last one, too, which is a shame, because it would have been worth two trophies I haven't gotten yet.

Something definitely seems glitched with the avenger trophy, as I have gotten the wildcard for 50 avenger trophies yet I don't have the actual trophy yet.  I also haven't gotten a single savior trophy, which seems a little odd.  I look at Hark's trophies and he has the savior and avenger trophies, but his savior wildcard shows he has 0 savior trophies.

Looks like they have made some improvements to the stats site.  The "My Photos" tab now shows up and you can view your photos.

Also, if you look at patches and wildcards now, it shows the additional criteria you need to get the award, not just the IAR criteria. It doesn't show your current progress, however.

At around noon I stopped being able to sign in to the EA servers on Live - not everyone was having the problem and I don't know if it's fixed yet.

To honor independence day, your requirement for this weekend is to only play as Americans. So if you are playing Battlefield and you come up as Russians or middle-easterners or whatever, you must immediately quit your game. Same for COD4.  You may not play Gears of War, God of War, Age of Conan, World of Warcraft or any other game where your character is not an American. GTAIV is OK. MLB is OK. Pretty sure those Hot Shots Golf characters are Japanese, so that's OUT.

If you are Canadian you can play whatever the heck you want.

OK, I am playing on PSP, but I'm guessing a lot is the same? In the training area, it shows each attribute with a thick orange bar and a thin blue bar.  At the top of the page there appears to be a legend that says that orange means declining and blue means stabilized.  But I can't figure it out. One time I trained my vision, which seemed to make that orange bar longer, and then immediately trained my contact, which made that orange bar longer, but then the vision bar looked like it had gotten short again. Anybody understand how that works?

The thin bar is the progress to the next point, if it's red/orange the skill is atrophying and the bar is moving to the left to drop a point, if it is blue the skill is improving and moving to the right to gain a point. When you invest in a skill and the bar goes from long to short, it's because you are gainging a point and starting the progress to the next point, just like XP in an RPG. That's my understanding. I'm playing the PS3 version and it doesn't exactly the same, but I am guessing you have colors mixed up or something in your description. Any time I had an orange bar and invested in it, it went back to blue.

As far as your example, the skills have related skills that go up when you raise the other skill, though vision and contact shouldn't related. From memory on the PS3 version Contact LHP and Contact RHP are related and Batting Vision, Discipline and Clutch are all related.

Well in the PSP version, the thick bars are all orange, and all of my thin bars are blue.  There is a page that lists "stabilized" for all the skills.  I am guessing the thin blue bar will turn orange if it starts decreasing, but the thick bar is just always orange. I think what I was seeing with the bars moving up and down was my blue bars leveling up and becoming short at the start of the next level.  I just didn't realize what was going on.

So yesterday I finished out spring training for my player on Veteran.  I really got the hang of hitting and was way above expectations by the end of the schedule, and I played a full game almost ever day. I was offered a contract for AA, but then everything changed.  I only play once every few days, usually at my backup position (I am 2B/SS), and I am horrible at hitting AA pitching. I only made one of my first set of advanced goals. Do they take it easy on you in spring training?

Apparently once you max out your rank the form stat changes to a skill rating between 1-50 with lower being better.  Only one person can be Skill level 1.

I'm at 16 right now, trying to lower it but it doesn't want to budge.

ATB is currently 38, get crackin man! slywink

Wonderpug is 17, so close.

JarrodHK sittin in the mid at 28.

How is said rank determined?

Also, it appears that my stats have gone crazy. I would say that I comfortably average between 20-30 SPM from match to match, yet my score on the BF stats page says I average 8. something.

This further makes no sense as if I compare to teggy, who has fewer points in more time, my SPM is half his?

Thoughts?

Yeah, the stats are clearly still messed up. Sometimes when I my last round is a really bad round, my SPM will show up as like .7 or something. When my last round is a really good round, it will show up near 30.  It's hard to know if any of the stats are right.\

And thanks for rubbing that in, by the way.

7941  Non-Gaming / Political / Religious Nonsense / Re: Obama vs. McCain - My Research PT. 1 on: June 27, 2008, 07:35:02 PM
Now, I don't like McCain's tax plan because I am against deficit spending which is likely where he is headed. However, I must say that under Obama's plan, as it is written there, some rich folk are getting the screws put to them. I guess it is some kind of average, but as the numbers are there, a person making $3 million loses another 25% of their income.  I'd be curious to know what the actual effect on a person making that much is - maybe it is not nearly that bad.

Note: I fall into a tax bracket that would benefit from Obama's plan - I just don't subscribe to the whole "screw the rich" philosophy.  If they are getting unfair tax breaks in relation to the rest of the country, I am all for remedying that, but the numbers in the chart look a little unfair.

EDIT: Just caught this part - doesn't make me real happy about either plan now.

Quote
Under both plans, all American taxpayers could pay a price for their tax cuts: a bigger deficit. The Tax Policy Center estimates that over 10 years, McCain's tax proposals could increase the national debt by as much as $4.5 trillion with interest, while Obama's could add as much as $3.3 trillion.

The reason: neither plan would raise the amount of revenue expected under current tax policy - which assumes all the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts expire by 2011. And neither plan would raise enough to cover expected government costs during those 10 years.

"Distributionally, they're markedly different. But in terms of their impact on revenue, the two plans are not terribly different," said Roberton Williams, principal research associate at the Tax Policy Center and the former deputy assistant director for tax analysis at the Congressional Budget Office.

Guessing these are the "savior" and "avenger" bonuses.  Would like to know how they work - can you avenge someone's death forever, or does it have to be with 30 seconds or something? And what constitutes saving someone? Does the guy you kill have to have sent a bullet into one of your teammates in the past 3 seconds to take their health down past 50%, or what?

So, I have to say I am pretty amazed that I have not encountered any lag during the 7 or so hours I have put into the multi on the retail release. However, trying to get a squad into a game has become a major annoyance. Yesterday, Hark, Mikagami, Wonderpug and I tried to set up a squad to join a match.  The first six or so times, even with different people starting the squad, the game would not only fail to join a match, but it would dump us all out of the squad into the main menu.  Another couple of times it took half the squad into a game but dumped the rest of the squad back to the main menu. I'm getting over the fact that you can only talk with 3 other people, but they need to at least let you do that much!

As far as playing goes, I think I kept Wonderpug a little too entertained with my knifing woes.  I'm just really poor at using the knife and was ecstatic when I finally got someone's tags last night. On the other hand, people have no problem knifing me. You can camp a lot easier in BC that in COD4, but you still need to check your surroundings, because a lot of people in the game have my tags.

One thing I'm confused about is the scoring. Can someone break down how games are scored and points given out? The manual does a crappy (as usual) of going into detail on these things.

You lose points for teamkills and suicides, and gain points for...

kills
assists
kills your vehicle passengers make
repairing teammates' vehicles
healing teammates
healing squadmates (more points than healing teammates)
destroying vehicles
killing an enemy who was about to kill a teammate
killing an enemy who just killed your teammate
damaging a crate
destroying a crate
defusing a crate

Oddly I have absolutely no idea if there's any kind of point reward or incentive to actually win the match.

Yeah, I would love to see a full list of all the ways to get points and their values.  A lot of times I get points and I don't even understand how I got them.  They should just release a PDF like GTA did with the multiplayer manual.

For example, it seems like you might actually get points for simply being near a squad member when they kill someone but I don't know.  I'd definitely like to know the definitions of "kill assist", "squad assist" and their point values, plus all the bonuses, like "avenger", "defense", etc.

I feel like there is a bonus for being on the winning team - my score always seems to be higher than I thought at the end of a match where I am on the winning team, but I could be wrong.

I've played with VERY few people who are diligent on the Artie (usually they are the type of people who kill each other to get on the artie...), but when you get someone who is good it can totally swing the battle in your favor- calling out locations of enemies, tanks etc...or as mentioned, lighting them up.

In the full game is there artillery on every map? I hope not.

I haven't seen an artillery gun on any of the other maps.  There probably are, but the fact that I haven't seen one likely means that are not on every map.

My impression is that you appear on radar if: someone keeps their reticule trained on you long enough (inconsistent), someone shoots you (sometimes I just spray my MG on the usual sniper hangouts and see what lights up), or if a sniper tosses a motion sensor your way.

If there's a guy on artillery that's actually contributing to the team, if he keeps his satellite camera trained on an enemy for a bit he'll light them up on the radar.

Pretty sure that you must be visually spotted. That, plus the lack of the killcam makes it a lot easier to park in one spot as a sniper in this game as opposed to COD.

So I am still trying to make heads or tails of the stats. When I logged off last night I had made level 6, which I believe requires 2400 points. However, when I looked on the in-game leaderboards, my points were slightly below 2000. When I look online now (which one would think is enough time to catch up), my points are 1025, but my rank is correct. If you divide by the time played (2hr 54min), you get an SPM of 5.89, but online it says my SPM is 15.835. Multiplied out, that comes to about 2,755 points, which I'm pretty sure I am short of in the game. It also says I have 96 kills, but if you add up my kills per kit, you get 94.

So basically, the stats are a little screwy right now, and I still am not sure if dropping out of a game has an effect on your stats.

4. I think leaving mid-game screws up your stats.  Based on the rounds I played, I know my SPM should be over 10, but it currently stands at 4.44.  My score is 685, yet my rank is Sergeant, which requires close to 2000 points to rank up to. So it looks like if you dump out of a game, they take away your points, but don't take away your minutes. I guess that is punishment for leaving the game, but if it's true, I wish I had known.  I was logging out of games to respond to game invites. Now I need to work my SPM back up, plus my rank is all messed up.

I think stats are slow to update. It seemed to me that the website is faster to update than the in game stats. Did you check there?

Re: cheating. What kind?

Well the website shows that I have 684 total score yet also shows that I am a Sergeant.  I could maybe believe the two are updated separately, but there are many other clues to support my theory.  For one, my SPM is 4.44, and I'm sure it was never that low, not even after my first round. Also, if I looked at the world rankings in-game, I would see the scaled down score, but after each round finished, I would see the larger score, showing me how much I needed to level up.

As far as the cheating goes, Hark described it as a bunch of people turning a vehicle over and then continuously repairing it.  Apparently they could get several thousand points per round.  Not sure if that is the only way to do it.

I did also notice that those little triangles started working in the full game.  It appears they denote a trend of some kind, because they can go up, down or to the right (signifying no change).  I'm not sure what trend they are showing, though.

1. Support with MG36 is definitely my go-to kit for now. The scope on the MG is awesome, and I love getting points by healing people and being able to easily heal myself.  It also works well on attack and defend, as opposed to...

2. ...Demolitions.  Wow, I suck on attack with Demo, so I will be using it defend only for the time being.

3. It was great to play some new maps.  Oasis didn't even come up during the time I played.

5. As predicted, I have already gotten the Darwin's parachute achievement by riding someone's laser-guided bomb down. Lame.

6. I think the voice comm was screwed up. I could hear other people, and they couldn't hear me, and at times I think it was gone entirely.  I have heard people on GAF complain about this, and it did happen once with the demo.

7. Apparently there is some really lame cheating going on. If this was happening in the demo, I can't believe they didn't patch it. The world leaderboards are apparently already worthless.

8. I experienced some bad tearing about 1/4 from the top of the screen playing the single player - anyone else see this?
7956  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / How I wish they would change the Wiimote on: June 24, 2008, 06:56:35 PM
I have been playing a bunch of Godfather: Blackhand and Metroid Prime 3 and realizing that they didn't really do a very good job with the Wiimote. Reason is they tried to make it some kind of Swiss-army knife controller, specifically setting it up to work as an NES controller when you turn it on it's side. That's fine and all, but now the locations of the +,-, 1 and 2 buttons are in horrible locations.  Looking at the menu screen (and the map) in either of these games means bending your thumb uncomfortably back. Hitting the + and - minus buttons is not much better.

I'd love a wiimote that is specifically designed for games where you are pointing the control at the screen (and there are plenty of those).  I'd like to see if they could put the + and - to the left and right of the A button.  Not sure where to put the 1 and 2, but I wouldn't mind pulling the d-pad closer to the A button either. Shooting a missile in Metroid again means stretching up.

The other big problem is with nunchuk.  Since nothing is holding the nunchuck level, I constantly find that my left hand has rotated so that my palm is almost facing up, and when I think I am pressing forward, I am actually pressing a bit off to the left.  Don't know how to fix that.

Wow, that really is amazing.  I got my first 360 just this past December and it's probably from that same group - I know it's not a Falcon.  I'll just keep crossing my fingers.

Ron, I agree with a large part of your review, but definitely not with your crouching mention.  In COD4 (which you mention nails the controls) sprint is on the L3 which it is in BF:BC as well, yet you say it's not natural for crouch to not be on the L3.

Yeah, my only beefs with the controls are
1) the sprint - I don't really care for it on L3 in COD either, but at least in that game you only need to click once. Battlefield allows for unlimited sprint, so you have to hold the stick down, but that's a really awkward move for me.
2) left trigger for acceleration on vehicles.  I know why they did this for tanks, but it's still counter to almost every other game.  I haven't tried the alternate controls - I may like them better.

Is even the greatest hits version worth that much?  Then I need to just finish that game so I can sell it.

EDIT: wow, I just checked on Goozex, and it goes for the max point value they allow, which translates to $50. And at that price, the demand is much higher than the supply.  Who knew?

Battle Company? Anyway, my wife is going to be away this weekend, so I am going to be dangerously available for online play.  I need to make sure I take breaks to do yard work and cleaning like a good boy.

And ATB, phantom ATB is currently playing the dashboard.
