I stopped playing Jedi Knight during the sinking ship part because I felt like I was going to vomit. Now that I finally have a video card somewhat better than a Radeon Mobility 7500 (Boot Camp on my Macbook, believe it or not), I can actually play JK2 instead. Heck, I can even play Doom 3. smile

They do have tater tots at Sonic - you have to give them points for that.

The other drive-in chain that I get to once or twice a year is A&W. Their food isn't that great, but the rootbeer you can get at the actual A&W restaurants is amazing. It puts the stuff they sell in the supermarket under their own label to shame.

I really wish they would open a Culver's nearby.

Recently a Culver's opened a few minutes from our house.  I haven't been there yet and no little about the franchise.  Any suggestions or direction to maximize my first visit?  We've got a Sonic, Carl's Jr., and Jack in the Box on every corner, so Culver's might be a nice change. But I'm curious what makes it stand out from any other fast food burger.  I've heard good things and just haven't taken a moment to give it a try yet.  But without a functioning kitchen (still waiting on countertops) take-out has become the standard lately.

Well, I only get to have it a couple of times a year tops, so I haven't been able to sample large amounts of the menu. The butterburgers are good and should be tried. If you like pork, the pork tenderloin is a nice change of pace for fast food places. I've also had the walleye sandwich but I really doubt they will have that in Arizona. The concrete mixers are delicious, and if you are a fan of a thicker crinkle cut fries, theirs are tasty. A lot of people will recommend the cheese curds, but I don't really like cheese so they're not for me.

They have a very varied menu and I'd like to try some of the other non-burger items. They even have a cheesesteak for you to be offended by  icon_lol

The restaurant, not the hedgehog.

54,000 customers in the first 10 days is pretty impressive. I've only had Sonic once or twice in my travels, and while I enjoyed it, I'm not all that interested in trucking up to Peabody and dealing with a crowd. I'll wait and see where they open the other locations they are planning on.

I really wish they would open a Culver's nearby.
7328  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Books Read in 2009 on: September 10, 2009, 08:27:09 PM
Wow, I finally finished a book. It's been a long time, and I'm trying to do some more reading (or audiobook listening).

I read The Curse of Chalion by Lois McMaster Bujold - It wasn't at all what I was expecting. I thought it would be more of a swords and sorcery affair, but it turned out to be a lighter "Song of Ice and Fire". It took a while to get going, and even then it never really hit full speed, but I enjoyed it enough. The sequel won the Hugo award, so I will be reading that next.

Earlier in the Summer I read Look Me in the Eye: My Life with Asperger's by John Elder Robison. I read this by request of a relative with a child with Asperger's, and it was quite interesting. Somewhat because it was educational, but moreso because the author just had a crazy life.

It just blows me away how expensive 32GB is on an Apple product versus every other product.   It's like 73 bucks for a 32GB SDHC at New Egg.  Crazy talk.

What if you add in a pencil thin battery, wi-fi, audio hardware, a touch screen and a load of free applications?

$249 for a 32GB Sansa that you can expand with your own cards.  I guess that's the part that bugs me.  Can't change the battery on your own, and can't expand it.  :/

Well, but that doesn't come with integration with the iTunes/iTunes store and easy communication with my Mac. You may not care for iTunes or own a Mac, and in that case I can understand. Personally, I find the whole package well worth the extra money (although yes, being able to expand would be nice).

They are announcing quite a lot of nice new features in iTunes, both for iPhone and iPod.

I have been hooked on Metroidvania style games since playing Shadow Complex so I went and bought this.  I never played the originals on the Cube/Wii and I'm about 3.5 hours in on the first Prime and absolutely loving it.  It lives up to the hype I remember when it came out!  If all three Prime games are this good then this game is a steal at $49.99.

I loved the original Metroid Prime (even though I got frustrated by the difficulty at the end and didn't finish).  I didn't enjoy the gameplay mechanic they introduced in the second one and I also thought it was quite hard and I only played about halfway through. You'll have to see how you like it. The third was was a lot easier, but fun.

The exploration gameplay put in 3D was something I really enjoyed. I'm curious what Kojima's 3D third-person Castlevania is going to be like.

Eh, I thought the dialogue *was* clunky and unnatural.  Frequently it was clear that they thought they were writing a funny quip, and North did a good job delivering it, but the lines fell completely flat.  At no point was I the least bit interested in the plot or character.  Game could have gone completely without a story and I would have enjoyed it just as much.  But to each their own.

The one line I cringed at the couple of times I heard it was the Die Hard reference. The rest I don't remember much of. The head bad guy was pretty cliched.

Every since games went to $50 I generally reaaaaaaaaaaally have to have the game before I will buy it. I just find that to be too much for a game, regardless of whether I can afford it. I'll mostly only buy big MP releases on release date now.

The question was what is the root of Mac/PC debate. From the beginning, the Mac was portrayed as different (1984 commercial, etc.), fun, easy to use, etc. and gained a loyal following based on that belief. There was a group of PC users who were equally as passionate about why they thought the PC was better. Everything grew from there. Correct, who was "right" or "wrong" was not important, but that's how it started.

Yeah, honestly, what I think is at the root of it is just marketing. Humans are a lot like sheep, and we often do what the sheep herder tells us. That and some people feel the need to fight to justify high dollar purchases.

You word it like it applies to both Windows and Mac users, but hinted that it's Mac users who are the sheep.

I'm a sheep because I prefer OS X over Windows. Awesome.

It's also kind of hard to justify how people who use a computer that has historically had less than 10% market share are the sheep.

As someone who IMO is pretty ok at this game, let me throw out my suggestions.

1. Just get through most of the levels with a bronze first. Don't worry about the number of faults. Try and try again.
2. Now start back at easy and start working on getting as few faults as possible. Don't worry about 0 just yet. Also don't worry about your time. Slow and steady.
3. By now you should have a good feel for the different types of obstacles. So now it is time to focus on medals. Go back to easy again, and stick to a track until you get a gold on it. This time run through the whole track a couple times, then start restarting the track when you fault on something you normally wouldn't. Don't focus so much on 0 faults, but do focus on moving forward and no more than 3-4 faults.
4. As you move up difficulty, be ok with silvers and bronzes. But at this point you should be able to do the expert tracks (with about 100-200 faults).
5. Now you just need to put in your time. Keep focusing on a track to get a better time/fault count. Before you know it, you will be getting gold on expert tracks.

Oh, and you people need to up your game on the skill games  icon_razz

Yeah, I got all golds except 1 when I went through easy and then I made my way through medium (only one or two golds there), but when I got to hard it got really hard really quick.

The one bit that really got to me is where the girders rest on a pivot, and you actually have to get on and make them swing down a little so that they create a ramp to jump up and over.

But yeah, I haven't been just getting past checkpoints and moving on, which is maybe what I should do.

I find the controls to be really sensitive, and the other thing that drives me crazy is when I get myself in a nice landing position, but maybe my rider doesn't have his weight in just the right position, and as soon as he lands on two wheels he bounces up and backflips into a crash.

On the other hand, sometimes you just land a ridiculously giant jump or backflip and you can't help but smile.  I can't remember the name of it, but there is a track, I think it is medium, that is like a big roller coaster with loops and giant jumps and that is just a ton of fun.

The argument goes way back and is rooted in the fact that the Mac was fun and easy to use and the PC was better suited for people who wanted to be able to get at the guts of the OS if they felt like it

I think you've inadvertently summed up a big part of the argument right there... it's not a "fact" that the Mac was/is "fun and easy", despite Apple and Apple users' claims.  One person's fun and easy is another person's simplified and superficial.  And stating opinion as fact is a quick way to raise the hackles of someone who disagrees with that opinion.

Well, that was a surprisingly strong response to my post. Perhaps I chose my words poorly.

The question was what is the root of Mac/PC debate. From the beginning, the Mac was portrayed as different (1984 commercial, etc.), fun, easy to use, etc. and gained a loyal following based on that belief. Our exchange server used to force us to archive to our local machine after our mailbox got to a certain size and then our machines would be backed up during the normal backup procedure. I don't know if additional backing up was done.  Since then they changed it so that all mail is backed up and can be accessed at any time, even with web mail. We are a public company and we have a bunch of other certifications (SOX, etc.) so I assume there must be auditing rules, but I don't know what they are.

I can't decide if I love this game or hate this game. I really like the concept and doing huge jumps and stunts can be incredibly fun, but trying to beat tracks with no faults has been, at times, the most frustrating experience I have ever had.
