OK, another newb question - how does the game release songs to practice mode? When I failed out of Battery, it asked me if I wanted to practice it, but when I went directly into practice mode to play it it wasn't there.

If I remember correctly they unlock when you beat the song in World Tour mode or unlock whichever challenge it's located in. Not 100% sure on that.

I wonder why they did it that way? If you want to practice it, you're forced to go back and play the set, fail out and lose fans.

OK, whose brilliant idea was to make the mic much larger than fits in a standard mic stand? However, I managed to balance it on the end of my stand so I could get the "along for the ride" achievement doing easy vocals while I played easy drums biggrin

So I unlocked the Rolling Stone set this morning and took a quick look at the setlist to see what it had in store. Some stuff I already have no problem with, some stuff I haven't played yet, like Painkiller and Battery. I know Battery (the song) so I find a 1 song setlist that has it so I can check it out on medium drums. Oh, you can't play it on medium? OK, well lets just check it out. Intro is no problem. OK, the fast part is coming up.  1, 2, 3, 4, 5...fail out.  This might take a while biggrin
7325  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Resistance 2 Impressions on: January 10, 2009, 08:02:29 PM
So I finished this up this morning - I can see overall why people were disappointed in the game, but really don't get the complete hate.

The way the 2 weapon limit was handled definitely got a little silly, in that whenever large enemies appeared, you knew it was your job to go find where in the area the heavy weapon was. I understand their goal was to give access to all the weapons earlier in the game, but it wound up feeling contrived.

I missed the vehicles from the first game. In the first game, when they threw a monster at you that you felt that no one guy could take down, they often gave you access to a tank or other vehicle to use. Plus, it mixed things up and they were very fun to use.

There were still a lot of very big and tense firefights, and I thought the Leviathan fight was one of the cooler boss battle sequences I have ever played. The bosses themselves were not difficult (which I didn't mind, but I'm sure others did), but at least in a few cases beating the boss was not about running around and shooting the boss until it was dead.

I didn't like the Chameleons, and I was kid of torn on the Grim. I didn't always enjoy fighting them, but there is something to be said for the amount of tension the developers were able to create by having you walking through large areas filled with cocoons. And yes, the very end was definitely a little odd.

Played a little co-op this morning which was very cool, and of course there is a lot of good multiplayer in there.

I'm a completist when it comes to game series that have an overarching story, and seeing as I never got around to finishing KZ1 I won't be grabbing KZ2 unless they re-release the original to run on the PS3's w/o BC on them or I pick up a PS2 slim to play some games like Kingdom Hearts.

I have a BC PS3, and I'm having a hard time getting through it, honestly.

I'm actually still trying to plug through (though I'm guessing I'll do what Turtle said and watch the vids), and I have to say more than the imprecise aiming, the brown visuals, the ho-hum level design, the all-over the place difficulty...more than any of that what I hate the most about this game are the incidental voice overs.  There seem to be four things people say while in battle, "Kill him!" "Diiiiie!" "COME OOONNN" and the inexplicable "Over their heads!"  Add to that the faux Brit accents on the Hellghast troops, and it really becomes difficult to go through multiple battles in one sitting.

Quick question for those who played it, which character did you wind up using most and how often did you use them.  I'm finding the main guy, the average soldier to be a mild PITA.  The last level I played would have been better with the sniper, but I wonder if I can get through the levels faster with the tank (I've heard the last one is pretty useless).

I think I used the Helghan guy the most, occasionally used the girl and just about never used the heavy weapons guy (didn't like to be limited in where I could go). I think I pretty much stopped using the main guy once new people unlocked because I wanted to try them out and I liked the firepower of the Helghan guy. I might have used the main guy in the very last level, but I can't recall.

One of the great things about Rock Band 1/2 for me is that from time to time I will get sick of one instrument or another, but there are still things to do.  For a while I was playing drums all the time, then I burned out on the drums and have been playing guitar more recently.  I've even begun a vocal career on medium.  With so many different song/instrument combinations the game never gets old for me.

question: what is the difference between playing one instrument (by yourself) in a band career and playing that same instrument in a solo career?

Looks like my triple cymbal pack will be arriving today, so I'm pretty excited. I didn't find out until after that fact that I had apparently gotten a really good deal - I just popped on Amazon and they had them for $36 shipped, but I'm reading that they are frequently out of stock and much more expensive.

....and the movie is funny and very true.

I tried giving Idiocracy a try a few weeks ago but it was just so incredibly heavy-handed.  Pretty much the entirety of the movie's humor was captured in the opening 4 minutes of Wall-E.

I agree, actually. It had its moments, but more often it was cheesy rather than funny. I think someone on the board should name their child Upgrayedd, though.

With CoD it's totally the level-up system for me. If I think I can level up by playing another 1 or 2 matches I will usually do it, even if I decided I should go to bed a half hour earlier. However, once I reached 1st prestige in CoD4 I felt like I had accomplished enough and moved on. I believe I am level 59 in CoD:WaW at the moment and haven't been as obsessive with it, probably because I don't enjoy the tank maps much. The other stupid thing I did for CoD2, 4 and WaW was play on hardened. I got some achievement points, but I think the games were less enjoyable because of it.

I didn't know anyone actually subscribed to EGM. I have been on free subscriptions for quite a few years. Every time one would run out, someone would post another free sub link. I figured they had gone to some kind of an ad supported model.

Regarding all the gaming news going to little blogs - I could see that somewhat, but I doubt game companies will send review copies to all of these sites.

But, I am not completely dismissing your point of view and I even went so far as to subscribe to Gamestop's weekly email notification for store specials to keep an eye out for upcoming trade-in specials.  It is at least worth a try given how many games I have sitting in a closet doing little more than taking up space.

Have to throw my standard plug for Goozex in here. Unless you are averse to playing used games at all, it's a great way to get value for the games you don't play anymore.

But staying on topic, I too have pretty much stopped shopping at Gamestop due to the used game policy and the generally uncomfortable feeling I get dealing with their staff. I had kind of limited myself to buying new games or extremely cheap used games there to limit (or hurt) their profit, but that seemed kind of vindictive, so I decided I would just generally take my business elsewhere. Kind of sucks because there is one right by my house and 3 by my office. But I can go to Circuit City or many other stores that aren't too inconvenient, or just order online if I am willing to give up the instant satisfaction. But if it's not a brand new release I will generally use Goozex.

About the Teggy 10 point scale: Ratings are for single-player only. This is not a perfect scale where 5 is average, but I try not to weigh it too heavily toward the high end.  A "10" is a perfect game and its doubtful you'll ever see one - I didn't have any 10s last year.  8s and 9s are games I enjoyed a lot, but there were some features I felt weren't perfect. 6s and 7s, we're talking average.  Below 6 is a failing grade.  Bottom line, 8 is still a really good game in my eyes.  "Completed" means viewed credits. 7342  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Resistance 2 Impressions on: January 05, 2009, 07:08:36 PM
Well, since I only recently got my PS3, I have had the somewhat unique ability to start playing R2 immediately after finishing R1. I have only played through the prologue and a good chunk of chapter 1 so far, and I have liked what I have seen so far, so I hope that it doesn't go downhill like some of the comments here have implied.

I was surprised by the comments on the graphics. Playing through the first game, I was really surprised (in a negative way) by the graphics. It sort of felt like Half Life 2 looked on the 360 - a little old. A lot of the items like desks and chairs seemed to have very basic textures. When I popped in R2, I could really see the difference. Character models, grass, lighting, everything really looks at least a generation ahead. The view
Spoiler for Hiden:
when you come outside in chapter 1 and see the bridge and all the dropships was amazing

I mostly welcomed the control changes - being able to aim and move was a huge improvement. I don't think I ever used the aim in the first game, with the exception of the sniper rifle. Being able to sprint is great. Having the secondary fire on the right trigger feels a little awkward. Not sure why they couldn't leave melee on the triangle. I guess it can be quicker on the stick, but I think having it on both would be fine.

I get the complaint about carrying 2 weapons. Being able to carry 9 weapons is not realistic, but in the first game, the weapon selection worked just like in Ratchet and Clank in that you would switch to a certain weapon for the situation. Whenever I came upon those hatchling guys, I would lay down the mines; whenever I was in a tight tunnel I would switch to shotgun; long range, sniper; Hailstorm is the only one I probably wouldn't use often as the rebounds seemed too unpredictable. In R2, you can't do that, and I would guess they had to adjust they way enemies appeared accordingly.

A couple of gripes that aren't really about gameplay. They kind of Halo-ized the game with the 2 weapon limit, but they also did so with the menus. It's like the same layout and font as Halo 3 - kind of weird. And the other thing was that I kind of wished they didn't jump ahead so far technologically. Something like 2 years pass between the first game and the second game and now they have wireless microphone/earpieces and all this fancy stuff. What was an alternate history shooter now seems more like a sci-fi shooter, at least in the beginning part.

So I just got this as a present from my wife and set it up last night. This is my first guitar hero/rock band game, and I had always been reluctant to get them before because I play guitar, and memorizing patterns that didn't really correspond with playing the music didn't feel very enticing. But playing the drums is very, very cool. At medium/high you already actually playing an approximation of the actual drum track, and being able to learn to play some drums is very attractive. Too bad there is no way to do open/closed hi-hat, because it would be great if I could use the drums as a midi controller (which I have read can be done).

one question:

what is the game benefit (in tour mode or whatever) from playing on hard/expert? I am sticking pretty much to medium on drums right now as I get my coordination up, but are you prevented from unlocking songs/progressing unless you start playing on harder difficulties?

7354  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PS3] Ratchet and Clank Release Impressions - with bug info (And Ron's Review!) on: December 21, 2008, 04:07:58 AM
So I am finally getting to play this since I got my PS3 recently. For the first 5 or planets it was feeling very much like more of the same, and in fact seemed a little smaller scale than the PS2 games (less sidequests per planet). However, now that I am 75-80% into the game I have started to really enjoy it. I really like the story - it seems a bit more substantial than the past stories, which have really been very jokey. There is still lots of humor, but we are now learning a lot about ratchet's backstory and even see some emotion around his relationship with Clank. There's also less of Qwark - he can be funny, but he's basically had the same exact role in every game and it's gotten kind of annoying.

It's been designed in the typical R&C manner, which allows the game to be almost easy if you want, but still fun. I like to play the game by maxing out all of my weapons and upgrading my armor such that I can roll over the bosses. The game is still challenging, because there are swarms of enemies and they require different weapons to beat. I am not dieing very often, but I am not bored because I am always jumping around dodging fire and switching up weapons. Simply getting to try out all the different weapons is fun in itself. If you take some of the optional quests you also get additional help, including hints for finding the collectibles. They've also cut out some of the excessive parts of the older games, such as the huge areas you need to search for raritanium. Now you get raritanium everywhere, and you can use it to upgrade weapons before you level them up.

I can compare it to something like Lego Star Wars, which is definitely an easy game, but it can get tiring because all you are doing is hack, hack, hack (and the occasional pew pew).

So, all in all, it really is more of the same, but new weapons and good story are enough to keep it fresh. I do wish they would give descriptions for skill points - some are so vague there is no way you could figure out what you are supposed to do. I'm sure some people think the boss battles are too bland. And of course the game looks great.

That's surprising because I have a different Bissell model, and as soon as you put the handle higher than about 85 degrees, it stops the brush. In addition, it has a separate power switch for the brush, so if you want to make sure it is off no matter what, you can do that too.

Been coming down very steadily since around 2:30 or so. Trying to decide when I want to do out and do some shoveling. Doing it in the dark sucks but better than digging out all at once.

I think I have definitely discovered why my k/d was higher in CoD4 - hardcore vs. standard. Was playing standard CoD4 today and noticed how often my team was able to have some semblance of a front against the enemy. Playing regular, you always know when your teammates are around you, and more often know where the enemy is, even if only by them showing up on the radar due to noise. In standard I can at least keep myself near even or better, while in hardcore I can wind up having those awful 1-12 type rounds because I'll just keep walking into the wrong place.

this isn't a matter of hardcore vs standard though, it's a matter of CoD4 spawns and CoD:WaW spawns.

CoD4 has team based spawn points that move with the team providing the ebb and flow of battle along with a front that occasionally flips.

CoD:WaW has random spawns that vaguely throw you possibly on the side that your team is but more often than not are completely random and spawn friendly and enemies in the same spawn cluster at the same time.

Even with that difference, my k/d is much much higher in WaW than CoD4, not sure why though.

Well, that's not very realistic. Pretty sure when you die in battle you don't respawn behind enemy lines.

Massachusetts about to get hit with the first serious snowfall of the season. On the plus side, this allows me to go home from work early. On the negative side, I'm not really big on spending my friday afternoons shoveling.
