Feel free to go through my backloggery and pick a game from there  icon_lol

Actually, Ico is on there, and while NOLF and Freedom Force are not, I believe I own both and have had several aborted starts of both of them.

Ditto on the Riddick comment - I plan to get the new version when it comes out.

They will probably ruin it by having the source of the quake being the release of some genetically engineered creatures (or the quake will release some genetically engineered creatures that were safely locked away), but I'm intrigued.

Please, please, please don't let this be true (the creatures, not that you are intrigued icon_wink). They could *so* make a really interesting game out of this premise without screwing it up with aliens or creatures or other wacko stuff.

Well, according to wikipedia, there is a reference in the trailer to a Maori god that causes earthquakes, so I don't have my hopes up that this won't take a supernatural route.

For me, I think it is some amount of plausibility, but in the world that the movie has created. If the universe allows for it, I have no problem with over-the-top concepts. For example, Independence Day tries to hold on to some sense of reality, but then has crop dusters and the president flying fighter jets and random people flying alien spacecraft and uploading viruses via a mac. It's stupid and totally pulls you out of the movie. However, something like a wire-fu film makes sense because it fits into the mythology of the time.

But bad movies are also just bad movies. Armageddon has some of the worst writing in a movie ever (animal cracker scene?), plus it expects you to be entertained by watching a bunch of guys drilling a hole. Aside from the ridiculous nature of the premise (turning a bunch of blue collar workers into astronauts)

They stole the idea from Steve's, which was Boston-based thankyouverymuch. But I have no qualms eating there, especially since they are more common here now than Herrell's (which is really Steve's now. The stores that are actually called Steve's are an embarrassment to the name).

and i will give you one "spoiler" about the hunts

Spoiler for Hiden:
you will get them much faster than you can handle them!  from what i remember, a level two hunt will pretty much require a level 20 party, at least.  likewise, level 3, about level 30 party - DONT take them on willy-nilly you WILL get wiped!

I took a detour in the middle of the early quest with Penelo and did get completely wiped out on the second available hunt. I managed to complete it on the second try, but wound up using up most of my phoenix down in the process. I wondered afterwards if the game had meant for you to just complete the quest you were on with Penelo and then go do more hunts after you had gotten the "real" party together.

you will have more luck going back to work on the hunts later, especially once you fill out your party more.  if you take on many of them early, you're setting yourself up for a big challenge pretty quickly...not impossible, but you will tear through all your potions and money.  just follow the story for a bit and you can go back to the hunts any time.  i've been playing the story pretty much straight through recently and just hit my first little wall that seems to require a little leveling before i can progress any further.  i have quite a few hunts open and plan on going back to work on them now as a way to level a bit without just wandering about aimlessly.  i'm about 30 hours in now and the game is fantastic so far...fun gameplay, interesting characters, and great story.

According to the manual, the game will give you a hint based on the color of the enemy name (blue means you should win fairly easily, yellow you have a shot, red run away). I wonder if that scales at all to how big your party is. I neglected to check what color the second hunt creature was, but I know I specifically avoided a later encounter following the manual's suggestion.

Saw this on GAF - if you go to gamerankings.com you get redirected to Gamespot. Of course, the fanboys over there are glad, because they think the overall rankings are wrong. However, I use it all the time to look at various reviews and I'm hoping it's not actually gone.

I need to go back and finish this game. I think I am about 75% done based on the in-game stat. I got to the point where I was getting my butt kicked a lot and it was getting frustrating. I should probably just go in and do the remaining story missions. I am playing as Mui and I guess she has less health than Mattias. I guess that's what I get for wanting to hear that sexy British accent.

On of my main problems is whenever I get in a helicopter I seem to get shot down really quickly.

Looked like they had about 20-25 copies for the 360, 15-20 for the PS3.  The guy said that was everything they had, for preorders and unreserved alike.  Slightly contrary to the guy from the same store who just a few days ago told me they had over 300 preorders logged so I better preorder preorder now now!   disgust

I have to say I don't have a lot of favorite game music because when it plays over and over while you play it tends to become either annoying or you start to tune it out.

I will say that I like the theme that plays in Kingdom Hearts when you load up the disc. I also thought something that was unique was the way that Banjo-Kazooie plays the same exact music the entire game but changes as you go from area to area. From what I understand, that happens real-time.
7301  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / My 3-year old tv broke...but I fixed it for $5! on: February 17, 2009, 06:04:02 PM
Every once in a while you think you're going to get screwed and then a little something nice happens. For the past 2 years or so we have been fairly dedicated to paying off debt. We are not as hardcore as we should be, but we try to do without when we can - limited vacations, hanging on to old cars, trading games instead of buying, etc. We do treat ourselves now and again, especially when there's a bonus, gift, stimulus payment, etc.

3 years ago the old 20" tv I had in the bedroom died and I decided there would be no more sdtvs coming into my house. The best solution was a 27" Panasonic CRT HDTV that I got for about $400. It is 85 pounds (hence my newer rule of no more CRTs coming into my house - at least it's smaller than my old 120 pound Sony sdtv that I would love to get rid of).

On Sunday my wife informed me that the tv is off and will not turn on. Pressing the power button does absolutely nothing. Fantastic. I look up my documentation and see that the tv is at least a year out of warranty. I didn't buy an extended warranty, but the TV was from Circuit City, and wouldn't that be the kicker? So my option for repair is somehow getting the 85 pounds into my car and to a repair place, where I would no doubt be charged a bunch for labor. At this point my mind wanders to Costco, but I really, really don't want to spend money on a tv right now. Plus, I'd still have to dispose of the 85 pound tv.

So, off to the internet we go and I find that this is a common problem with the Panasonic tvs. The culprit? A tiny fuse that regulates the flow of power to the tv. If I don't mind opening the tv up, I can verify that the fuse is blown and then replace it. I figure, why not, hopefully I won't electrocute myself. I unscrew about 8 screws and get a look inside, and sure enough, the fuse is blown. Of course, the fuse is a specialty Amp/Watt combo that you really can't get in stores, but people online recommend a suitable replacement that can be found at Home Depot.

On Sunday morning I pop over to Home Depot, grab the fuse (a package of 2 for $5), go home and swap it in and the tv turns back on. Just to be safe, I ordered the correct fuse online so I can put the exact right one in when I get them. And my wallet is breathing a sigh of relief.

Quick question - if you press "start" during a cutscene in ffxii (in-engine or fmv), will it pause the cutscene or just skip over it? A couple of times yesterday I had to tell my wife to wait to talk because I was afraid I would miss the cutscene.

OK, yeah, this game is much different than any other RPG I've ever played and I mean that in a very good way. No random battles, no break from the action for battles, gambits (not having to obsess over health is huge)... I've played some other games that have elements of this system (KOTOR, Kingdom Hearts), but this has me hooked (I played about 4.5 hours today).  The story and characters help as well, of course. Although what was Square thinking by giving away "Amalia's" identity in the instruction book? Granted, if you were paying attention to the cutscenes you'd basically know, but even when I saw her reappear I wasn't 100% sure it was her.

FYI, there is some fantastic (and spoiler-free) information about FF XII in this thread, especially relating to gambit setups.  The early game is pretty basic, but there are some definite gambit tips and tricks you'll want to be aware of as you progress.  The FF XII late-game is an incredible mix of action and gambit-tweaking that has few rivals in the RPG world.

I took a quick look and saw things in the first post that I don't really want to know. If I don't play the game perfectly and don't see the best ending or get the best loot, so be it. I'd rather just see things unfold as I play and do my best with what the game throws my way. Hopefully I won't play myself into a corner.

Well, I was out today and picked up FFXII. $13 new at Gamestop, which is crazy cheap. I'm still interested in Shadow Hearts, so I'll have to see what I want to do there - Kevin was correct in saying that the original is relatively expensive for a PS2 game. This will probably also not help with my FFVII playthrough.

Thanks very much for all the suggestions (and feel free to add more). I don't want to get too big of a backlog of PS2 games, of course. I bought the next-gen systems and and HDTV for a reason smile

Some comments:
"tactics" games and SRPGs - I can't do it, I just don't have the patience, even if they have giant robots
Ratchet: Deadlocked - I'm a diehard Ratchet fan and I just can't bring myself to play this game. I like Ratchet for the platforming a lot more than the shooting.
FFVI - I don't know that I want to go that far back in time, but I'll keep it in mind for games to play in the DS on trips
Rhythm/music games - about the only thing I really like is playing the drums in Rock Band
Mark of Kri - I had this on my radar a long time ago, so it may make the cut

I don't understand why they don't let you move and shoot. It is obviously a decision, as RE4 was the same way, but I just don't get it.

I'm not saying I like not being able to run and shoot, but I can think of a good reason for it - realism. You've always played well-trained S.T.A.R.S. agents. If you've ever played a Rainbow Six game, you know that moving while shooting means you have a much lower chance of hitting the target. You might slowly move forward while shooting, but you never circle strafe, and you certainly don't jump and shoot.

OK, yes, you are fighting zombies and crazy monsters. But maybe what they are going for is a realistic...um...zombie shooter?

A lot of interesting suggestions. I don't know if I want to go down the JRPG road - It's a genre I've always been really interested in but have had little luck getting into. Granted, I have only tried to play 3 JRPGs: FFVII, FFVIII and Xenosaga I. Of those 3, FFVII is the only one I have gotten past the tutorial. I'm actually replaying FFVII right now (about 5 hours in) because I've always wanted to know how the story ends (I got to the 3rd disc the first time I tried playing it).

I looked on IGN and they rate Shadow Hearts Covenant way ahead of the original. CeeKay and Gratch, which one were you recommending?

What is Mark of Kri like? Is it along the lines of God of War?

Other question: where do people think Dark Cloud 2 fits in in terms of quality?

7318  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: I never ever trade in games. Do you? on: February 14, 2009, 01:01:24 AM
I never traded anything in for the longest time. Then I started budgeting to pay off debt and I looked over on my shelf and saw a whole mess of games that I knew I would either never play or never play again and I bit the bullet. I didn't trade in at Gamestop, though, I use Goozex. It doesn't have the same level of instant gratification, but you get so much more value for your games that it's worth it. I still hang on to a select few games - older stuff I really love (Ratchet and Clank for PS2, for example) and new stuff if there is a really strong multiplayer component that is likely to get played in the next year (Call of Duty 4/5) or DLC expected (GTAIV, Burnout Paradise).

At this point I have enough points stored up that I can easily trade for older 360/PS3 games if I get the urge for something, and since I'm not really spending any money on games I don't feel bad when a really big multiplayer title comes out and I want to drop $60 on it. I pre-ordered Killzone 2, for example. Sure, I don't get to play some of the single player games until they become readily available for trade (I'll probably have wait another month to get my hands on the new Prince of Persia and Tomb Raider, for example), but that's not a big deal to me.

I'm a sucker, but it's hard to resist.  That being said, my wife is banned from ever going into a pet store except to buy food.

My sister-in-law hosted a CCI dog which she would have had to give up except for the fact that it failed the "test" (it was afraid of stairs or cars or something). But there are people that do it over and over again with the dogs starting as puppies. No idea how they can do it.
