I just realized that while we all think Dawn of War 2 is pioneering a new style of RTS without base building and tactics focused, Myth did it first, albeit in a fantasy setting.

And if I remember correctly, didn't Ground Control do the same in a sci-fi setting?  I don't remember much base management.

Ground Control came out after Myth.  I loved that game, though, and mostly because it dumped all the minutae and was more story-oriented.

I've been thinking about dusting off Myth (I stumbled on the Codex version right before this discussion started).  I never finished either I or II (though I dearly loved 'em both for what I played).

Does Myth allow you to pause? I have (or had? I need to check) the Total Codex and tried to play a bunch of times but could never deal with having to scan across the map real time. I loved the fact that it was all tactics, no resource gathering, but I still couldn't handle the RTS part. Combat Mission is the only strategy game I have been able to play for a significant amount of time.

i understand why the vp said it, and why he had to say it... i even understand why it wasnt officially reviewed (and it wasnt - they may have looked at it, said it was a fumble and decided NOT to review it - but to claim it was officially reviewed is insane - in comparison, think how long it took to review holmes clear td catch - and this play was MUCH closer than that).  but you cant have a superbowl being decided on an overturn - i completely get that (it would bring the whole "review" process into question, which the nfl is already pretty cautious about)

and i get why the vp said he had to have total control - i just dont think that wording is anywhere in the rules.  id be surprised if it WASNT added in next year, but im pretty sure it isnt in there now.  if it were, thered be no need to have the empty hand rule, because any pass, arm forward or not, where the qb didnt have total control would be a fumble.  and ive seen many, many plays where the qbs arm was going forward while being hit, the ball was moving around and it wasnt even a question that it was an incomplete pass (or, if he basically just spiked it, was intentional grounding)

Do you have a copy of the official rulebook? The version that is online is just a digest of the rules and leaves out quite a lot of information. I'm not saying you don't, I'm just curious what you are using as your source.

Another thing, if Rock Band can make their older DLC work with Rock Band 2, why can't Guitar Hero do the same.  I hate still having to put Guitar Hero 3 in my system to play the DLC I got with that game.

Not taking anyone's side here, but this point isn't entirely fair. The songs that you can play in Rock Band 2 are from Rock Band 1, both full band games. Since Guitar Hero 1-3 were guitar-only games, if you were to somehow import the songs into GH:WT, you'd be restricted in how you could play them since there aren't drum/bass/vocal tracks. If they come out with GH:WT2 and you can't import the GH:WT tracks, then this point is more valid.

It was until they got to the koala punching. That was hilarious.

OK, allow me to get all geeky here. Isn't the top picture the NCC-1701-A, which they finished building in Star Trek: TMP? The appropriate comparison for the bottom picture would be the NCC-1701, which was in the tv show.

The Enterprise from Star Trek: The Motion Picture was the original tv-series enterprise after a significant refit that included upgraded engines and some other major modifications (such as routing the phasers through the warp drive). That same ship was used in the battle against Khan in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and was destroyed by Kirk & Co. to kill a bunch of Klingons in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock. The NCC-1701-A didn't appear until the very end of Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home and saw action in the god-awful Star Trek V: What the hell are we doing? as well as the far-superior Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country.

So the chart's not really inappropriate, since they had to choose between comparing the newest movie-ship against either the tv-show version of the original Enterprise or the movie-version of that same ship.

Kind of surprising - I just got a $21.99 credit from Circuit City. I haven't returned anything to them recently, so the only thing I can think of is they are crediting me for the 1400 MS points that I was supposed get when I bought Gears of War 2 from them (the cards were on backorder at the time). That's a $19.99 item, so close I guess.

Very surprised that that would be high enough on the list to get recovery for.

I can't believe they are doing it again so soon. Here's the info from the website:

Quote
In lieu of the festivities which will no-doubt keep most of you in front of your TV's all weekend, we've decided to initiate yet another weekend of Double-XP Jan 30 Feb 1 to compliment The Big Game!

Not only will you be receiving Double-XP, but we're introducing two new playlists to the Xbox 360 and PS3 by popular request: Team Tactical (4v4) and Mercenary TDM (no parties allowed)! Team Tactical will pit two teams of four against each other in a random rotation of all the Team-Based gametypes.

It all starts tomorrow morning PST (Friday the 30th)

I doubt I will take advantage of this one like the last, but I'm sure I'll get some rounds in.
7277  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Amazon shipping mechanics on: January 29, 2009, 09:04:17 PM
Very interesting - I ordered 2 items from Amazon on Monday using super-saver shipping, but got the items overnight. I looked on the label and it turns out the box came from Nashua, NH. It was shipped by A-1 Couriers, who I've never heard of. I placed another order on Tuesday night, but that one has yet to ship. Wikipedia only lists these places as fulfillment centers:

        * Arizona, USA: Phoenix, Goodyear
        * Delaware, USA: New Castle
        * Indiana, USA: Whitestown, Munster
        * Kansas, USA: Coffeyville
        * Kentucky, USA: Campbellsville, Hebron (near CVG), Lexington, and Louisville
        * Nevada, USA: Fernley and Red Rock (near 4SD)
        * Pennsylvania, USA: Carlisle, Chambersburg, Hazleton, and Lewisberry
        * Texas, USA: Dallas/Fort Worth
        * Ontario, Canada: Mississauga (a Canada Post facility)

So I don't know if Wikipedia just doesn't have all the info or what. I also don't know why they immediately chose to ship out my items rather than wait. The first shipment was a PS3 headset and an XBOX 360 controller battery, and the second shipment was a 360 battery quick charge kit, so you'd think if they had the first stuff on hand, they'd have the second.

and a statement from Harmonix over at Joystiq...

Quote from: Harmonix
There has been a lot of discussion over a recent article that stated "MTV said it plans to increase the number of available songs this year to as many as 5,000."

In an effort to clarify and put some context around that number, please see the original quote on ArsTechnica.com from an interview with Alex Rigopulos, CEO and co-founder of Harmonix, during this year's CES.

In that article, Alex stated:

"That said, one of the great promises of the (Rock Band) catalog moving forward, as the catalog expands from 500 songs to 5,000 songs or whatever in the coming years, is that we're going to be less constrained from a genre standpoint, and I think you will see us starting to branch out into... whether it's country or R&B and jazz or funk, or things of that sort. With the critical mass of the "rock" core covered, of course we'll keep expanding it, but the critical mass is covered, so now we can start to branch off in ways that haven't made sense in the past but will make sense moving forward."

nice job of taking a quote out of context yet again...

That's beyond taking a quote out of context, that's completely ignoring what he said and making something up.
