7161  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: I think I'm going to play PS2 games until November 10th on: October 13, 2009, 05:30:54 PM
I'm good, thanks smile  I actually went through this excercise earlier in the year and think I've got all the PS2 games I'm ever likely to play. I got rid of all my PS2 GTAs after I got GTAIV even though I hadn't finished them because they are such a pain to play after experiencing the newer control scheme. Kingdom Hearts is also in my backlog and I've been so reluctant to start it up because I played about 75% through several years ago. I have Resident Evil 4 for the Wii - that's another one I have tried to play through about 4 times.
7162  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / I think I'm going to play PS2 games until November 10th on: October 13, 2009, 05:20:22 PM
I don't think I've got Pete's disease, but it seems like most games I pick up lately aren't grabbing me. I tend to be pretty ADD with games in general, and if I don't absolutely love a game or get frustrated by difficulty, odds are I'm going to drop it somewhere along the way. I just burned through 30+ hours of Mass Effect and had a great time, but attempts to play The Force Unleashed (how many times can I fall into a bottomless pit?), Mirror's Edge (not as fun as I was hoping) and Riddick (kind of frustrating to try and stay unseen) have not been fruitful. I also pulled Mercenaries 2 back out with the intention of finally finishing it before being reminded that the late game is kind of hard and it appeared there was no way to reduce the difficulty.

So over the weekend I hung out upstairs a bit where my ps2 is and finally got 5-6 hours into MGS3 (although I'm not loving the gameplay even though I do enjoy watching the cutscenes. Except Ocelot - what a dork), dug back into FFXII a little bit and started up Mark of Kri, which seems intriguing. So I think I am going to dig into some backlog for the next few weeks until MW2 comes out. Well, unless the copy of Uncharted 2 I used Goozez points to buy shows up.

7164  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Bayonetta - from the Starshifter School of Design on: October 12, 2009, 12:07:35 AM
I think that part of the reason I can't get into DMC and similar games is part of why I don't get into fighting games - combo memorization. The fact that I should care that I can "jump cancel" out of combos is an indication that the game is too technical for me. I think these games look cool and probably have good stories, but I couldn't even get past the first boss in DMC. I think they are made for a certain kind of gamer.

I liked the latest full length game (repetitive boss battles excluded) and don't mind recommending it for people who enjoy platformers. I don't, however, recommend this add on, which adds nothing to the story and has even worse boss battles.

Finished up this morning. I put in around 31 hours and fully leveled up to 50. I totally agree that the story was fantastic and the presentation and cut scenes toward the latter half of the game were great. Having some real life or death choices was impressive and I definitely stopped to think before acting.

There's a point where the key mysteries in the story are revealed to you, and I laughed, because each time I thought to myself, "but what about...", a dialog choice addressing just that question would come up. Bioware thought about all the holes and made sure there were answered.

There was only one thing I wasn't clear on and I probably just missed it.

7170  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / So, what _is_ your most wanted XBOX Live feature? on: October 09, 2009, 08:25:52 PM
There seems to be a lot of disagreement about whether Live should have Facebook and Twitter integration or some kind of "Home" equivalent.

So then what is your one wish for Live?

I honestly can't think of a huge change I would like to be made, but the one thing I would really like is expanding party size to at least 12, because that would make it easier for groups to get together and communicate in games like CoD or Battlefield.

7173  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Who here has a long weekend? on: October 09, 2009, 07:10:58 PM
Due to the nature of our business (our customers take very few days off), we only get the "big" holidays off and we used to get 2 floating holidays. A couple of years ago we got Columbus Day added to our days off and they took away one of our floating holidays. Most of us thought this was ridiculous because it was likely that none of our customers were taking the day off. I finally found out the other day that the reason this happened was that "some people" wanted the day off because schools tended to close. Which I imagine means that someone with sufficient power wanted to take the day off but was getting interrupted by people who hadn't taken the day off. Lame.

So does anyone else have Monday off?

Wow you got lucky on that FG! I really think they need to up the base kicking values as kickers don't seem to be able to make anything from the 30 yard line. The Raiders tried a 52 yard kick against me and missed short by like 15 yards.

That is strange because I have seen Janikowski make 60 yarders in this years' version of Madden.

That's something to be able to kick the equivalent of his age.  Not so impressive with the younger kickers though.   icon_wink

And like I said, the Chiefs just blow.

I'm actually interested in the Facebook stuff, particularly the ability to post screenshots from your games. Although, it sounds like support for that is going to be pretty minimal to start (I think the only game they have announced so far to support it is Tiger Woods 11).
7176  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: [360] Madden 10 Online Franchise - Week 5 on: October 09, 2009, 02:48:06 AM
The Cowboys just pulled off an embarrassing 37-31 overtime win over the Chiefs. How can this be? Let me count the ways:

-The Cowboys 3 first half touchdowns came off of 2 kick returns for TDs and an interception for a TD. They could get absolutely nothing going offensively, could hardly make a tackle, and the fact that they led by a TD at the half was only due to the fact that the Chiefs suck.

-In the 2nd half the Cowboys defense was just as porous, letting Larry Johnson run all over them and giving up 2 TDs. Again, an interception return for a TD allowed them to stay in the game.

-With the game tied in the 4th, the Cowboys drove deep into K.C. territory, where Marion Barber promptly fumbled the ball (and I didn't have fast enough fingers to hold on to it).

The only bright spot to that point was that Barber was finally having a little luck running to the outside. K.C. drove into Dallas territory with under 2 minutes left but stalled around the 22 yard line. With 1 second left, the Chiefs go for the game winning field goal, but the kick bounces off the crossbar and the game goes into overtime.

http://www.easports.com/media/play/video/10825726

K.C. won the toss but were forced to punt. At this point, the Cowboys slowly building outside running game finally broke loose, and Barber finished the game off with a 43 yard TD run.

http://www.easports.com/media/play/video/10825755

A win they most definitely didn't deserve.

I recently started a kind of "book club" with a bunch of my college buddies and we get on live once every 6 weeks or so and talk about the book we just read. Most 360 games require too much attention to have a decent conversation, so something like this actually wouldn't be too bad. Although old Atari games don't hold up too well and tend to be 1 player games. I might be interested in a bar where maybe you could have your avatars play pool together or throw darts, maybe play poker (and yes, I would rather do this in person, but we live at the 4 corners of the US so this is just the solution we came up with).

Why wouldn't you just use a party?

Well, we do, but we want to do something while we're chatting, not just stare at the dashboard.

Thank you 8ball.  I just hurt my hand punching my monitor while trying to hit Teggy.  Teggy, there are qb's who've beaten every team in the league before, but since the statistical oddity gives them another chance to suck Brett's dick, they had to say it.  (No, gee, I don't *HATE* the media's NEED to promote a specific player.  Why would you ask? icon_biggrin).  Where Favre's concerned, I have become so evil, I no longer even care about him: I'm praying Adrian Peterson blows out an ACL.  Hey Brett, let's see how you do when teams aren't pre-occupied with stopping the modern version of Jim Brown.

Eh, I shouldn't let it get to me.  Just as we all know, Favre is good now, in another seven weeks, he'll stink out the joint like no one's business.  SOP for the last five years (which every media talking head magically forgets around this time of the year).

Um, OK. I just though it was an interesting stat. I think it was clear that they weren't talking about the first guy to beat the original AFL teams or something.

Yeah, I think U2 fits the bill pretty well.

Huge catalog? Check
Recognizable members? Check
Evolving eras of musical style? Check
Elaborate stage shows? Check

In fact, I don't know if there would a better band to use if they were looking to copy the Beatles Rock Band style.

EDIT: I was thinking even more about this. They could have you play an early show in a little place in Dublin, then Red Rocks, some kind of Joshua Tree show, the outdoor show from Rattle and Hum (where they cover Helter Skelter), Zoo TV tour, Popmart tour, etc.

Checking back in just to let you know what I decided to look into. Well, not much yet, actually. I watched the first episode of Modern Family and thought it was very funny. I am generally clueless so I didn't see the twist coming at the end. I haven't watched the second episode yet, however.

My wife is fairly obsessed with Glee, but I am not interested enough to follow it. However, she has kept all the episodes and replays them while she does work so I am pretty much seen all of them. She watches a lot of shows that I don't care to follow but will be entertained enough by when I have nothing to do. These would include NCIS, Bones, House, Greek, Psych (this is probably the one I would consider watching more often, because it is so obviously written by someone my age), Royal Pains, and Raising the Bar. This season she has started watching The Good Wife, which seems decent enough for a courtroom show.

No, they are just the characters that aren't allowed to use the shotgun. Wait, you gave Ashley a shotgun? According to her character type she gets an assault rifle and then you can unlock the sniper rifle for her. Wouldn't she be completely untrained using a shotgun?

You can level up your teammates manually if you take them with you on missions, and once she reached a certain level I trained her on the shotgun (or at least I think I did).  It has been a while since I last played the game, but I'm pretty sure once she was weapons trained to a certain point you unlock her ability to use the shotgun and I then raised her training with that specific weapon.  Perhaps I'm not remembering correctly and I outfitted her assault rifle with chemical rounds and not the shotgun.  Maybe it was the bullfrog looking guy and not Ashley.  Now I'm not sure.   retard

Because they look so much alike slywink  My female Sheperd was dissapointed to learn she wasn't allowed in Ashley's pants.

Things they need to fix in MW2-

Grenade travel distance reduce by 50%
3x grenade perk (a la grenade spam)
hit detection (latency and hit boxes)
martyrdom- only if a grenade is in inventory
stabbing distance with knives
adjust the accuracy of SMGs and shotguns over distance
reduce the power of the M16
decrease the firing rate of pistols (no one can fire a .50 that quickly and accurately)
invulnerability during the last stand animation
pinpoint accuracy of HMGs over distance

Seeing as they added a heartbeat sensor, I don't think they're going for more realism.

Well, I am very late to the party here, but I'll say that Mass Effect has its hooks in me. I'm near 20 hours in and haven't done much of the main story. Why do I keep visiting barren planets to truck around scanning artifacts and fighting through the odd settlement or mine? I'd have to say that one reason is that all the main missions I have played have been a good deal of fun. Not a lot of thought was put into the random planets, but the main missions have a nice mix of driving, fighting and light puzzle solving. The other reason? Loot. I am pretty hooked on searching every sludge canister and malfunctioning equipment for a sniper rifle with 1 extra point of power, a more explosive grenade upgrade or a snazzy looking set of armor.
