So, there were definitely some interesting revelations in the episode. I think the big problem with the show is that it used Eliza Dushku as Echo, so it feels like she is the main character. However, you can't really have a main character without a fairly consistent personality, because there is nothing for the audience to hook on to. You have to think of it more of an ensemble, I suppose. I'm curious as to how they are going to address this as the show progresses (assuming they give it the chance).
7162  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Sony: Average session of Home is 55 minutes on: March 20, 2009, 08:20:48 PM
I think it's that long because most people went in once and never came back and the rest are just die-hards.
7163  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Joss Whedons Dollhouse starts Friday on: March 20, 2009, 05:58:24 PM
I've kept up - it's been entertaining enough to stick with. I hope this episode gives us some idea of where it is going. As it is it is very hard to see a long-term arc for Echo as she plays a different character every time. We see that she is remembering a little bit of each character after she is erased, but that plays into a full 2 seconds of each episode. I feel like at some point Echo has to become a full character of some sort when she has _not_ been imprinted. Perhaps she will start to become some sort of super-doll who can access the skills of anyone she has been imprinted with? I think that's what they imply happened with Alpha.

same here.  I thought I had alot of points, but I forgot I bought Dr Feelgood and that ate up most of them.

XBL is having "Billing problems" according to this post by Major Nelson.

finally got the points, now just to wait for the thing to download.

I was still unable to get points as of about 10 minutes ago (got further than before, but still couldn't make it). I was ready to play this again, too frown  At least I made some good progress on Prince of Persia.

edit:  ok, I finally was able to get the points through the website and queue up the map pack. I'll have to turn on my console tomorrow morning.

Really, "worst birthday ever" sounds so severe. This one has been a bit on the sucky side.

Today is my 36th birthday. The whole "closer to 40 than 30" feelings aside, I was willing to keep my chin up. However, I didn't sleep well last night and was pretty much sleepwalking through the day. My stomach didn't feel all that wonderful and I was pretty much hoping my wife didn't have anything elaborate planned, because all I really wanted to do was go home and relax.

I left work at 5:30. My drive home is about 12 miles or so and takes about 15 minutes over a short stretch of I-95, happily moving against traffic. Today I was greeted with a parking lot on the on ramp to I-95. At 6:10 I called my wife to tell her I was stuck in traffic and had not even merged on to 95 yet.

Hm, that's very strange, I notice as I am talking, my car is revving at 2000 RPM even though I am not in gear (my car is my wife's old 1997 Saturn couple with a manual transmission).  I fixed that by giving it a little gas, no problem. Hm, that's very strange, there's smoke coming out of the hood. Problem!

At this point I have no clue as to what the source of the smoke is. As far as I know my car is about to explode in a ball of flame like in the movies. Somehow, as all this is happening, I am merging on to 95 and a sliver of breakdown lane starts opening up. I manage to pull the car up to the point where my entire car can fit in the breakdown lane, get the hazards on and get out of the car. There is something pouring out underneath the car. I decide I don't see any flames, so I get the hood open and it appears that something is going on with the coolant tank. Exactly what, I have no idea, but I know I am not going anywhere.

Thank goodness for AAA, although I realize in this traffic I have no idea how anyone is going to reach me. After calling in, I am set to pace the side of the highway trying to keep warm (I think it was hovering around 40 degrees, so again, could have been a lot worse). During this time, two of my coworkers drive by asking if I need help, including my boss. Good for some temporary amusement. Called my wife for a little while, and then, as it was getting dark, the tow truck came through, at about 7PM.  We get the car up and merge into traffic to find out what was causing the whole mess. It turned out some bozo had put a backhoe on a flatbed without realizing it was too tall to get under the overpasses. Big mess.

At that point traffic cleared up, and I had the tow take me all the way near my house, because I didn't care how much it cost at that point (it wound up being $12 - again, could have been worse). My wife picked me up and took me home where she had made homemade Boston Creme Pie for me which I will enjoy later.

So, I'm home, I'm warm, I have food on the way. I guess the moral of the story is that while things may seem horrible at the time, really, things could be a lot worse. Well, until you get the car repair bill in the morning. Tongue
7173  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: SyFy Channel on: March 16, 2009, 04:16:00 PM
It would be nice if they actually stuck to those genres and stopped showing wrestling. There's too much junk on sci-fi to just channel surf it. All of the "sci-fi original movies" are trash. They should concentrate on quality original shows like BSG, Eureka, Stargate, (I suppose there is a market for Ghost Hunters and other shows along those lines) etc. and then try to be like a Boomerang for older sci-fi, mystery and horror shows. Things like X-Files, Quantum Leap, The Prisoner, Buffy, Twilight Zone, etc. Not saying they could get the rights to all of those series, but if they can keep up a consistent level of quality I think they'd do a lot better.

OK, I have been continuing on with my elite playthrough. I've gotten about halfway through so far. It is definitely less frustrating than CoD veteran (or I would have given up by now), but there are still some parts that have made me want to throw the controller. While CoD veteran requires you to take just the right route so you can stop the forever spawning enemies, Killzone 2 elite requires you to find the best spot of cover that will allow you to stay significantly protected while you methodically pick off enemies and let your teammates help to ease some of the burden (although you'll find times, such as Visari Square, where your buddies will all be laying on the ground screaming for a medic.) In normal, you can run around a little, but in elite, if you get out of cover, you are pretty much dead.

The toughest part so far has been

Spoiler for Hiden:
After crossing the first part of the bridge, approaching the AA gun. I had no problem at all with this part on normal, but it was a major pain on elite. I still am not even sure how I beat it. If I tried moving up the middle, the enemies seemed to spawn endlessly, even when I was able to "snipe" the AA gunner with my rifle. I spent a very long time (I didn't time it, but I wouldn't be surprised if it added up to an hour over 2 days and a few sessions) trying to get through and tried different variations, such as taking a path up the left side or clearing out the middle with the rifle, then running back and getting the grenade launcher and trying to clear out the area where enemies were spawning from. What finally worked was taking cover way back near the gun rack and taking the AA gunner out at long distance, and then slowly moving up the middle. After fighting a little while, all the enemies were cleared out. The only thing I can think of is that normally the AA gun takes out a lot of your AI teammates, and by taking it out early, it allows the AI teammates to clean up.

I am still deathly afraid of the last boss battle (and the fight leading up to it) and will probably wind up not getting the trophy. I should at least get the 1500 kills smile

One other thing I forgot to mention before - in Killzone 1, Templar's first name was pronounced "Yahn" (spelled Jan), but in Killzone 2 they call him "Jan".

Finished up the single-player campaign the other day - you know, while frustrating, the end area/boss didn't end up ruining the experience.

Yeah, the thought of playing it on a tougher difficulty makes me cringe, but I'm not going to toss out the fun I had throughout the entire rest of the campaign.

And I only missed out on the secret trophy by 20 seconds!!!  Damn!

I decided to play some on elite last night. I got partway through the battle at the end of the 3rd chapter. It has checkpoints, but still very hard. Elite doesn't feel like CoD on veteran, which I loathe, but it has its frustrating parts. I will probably see how far I can go, although there are a couple of parts that I am pretty concerned that I won't be able to manage, one of which is the last boss fight - they give you very little health.

I got the last secret trophy, but I don't really know how. It's not clear where they start the timer from. I'm about 50 kills short of the 1000 kills trophy. I still haven't managed 5 kills with one grenade. There are a few that I doubt I will try for:

Spoiler for Hiden:
destroy all the pods when in the air-to-air gun, for example.

And of course, I seriously doubt I'll get the awards for being in the top % in MP for a week.

Yeah, those can be pretty nuts, but also very frustrating. That's a good time to take your squad on a side path to flank the enemy.

The other thing I absolutely love are the sounds the rifles make. Even though they are fictional guns, there is something very realistic about the sound they make. It reminds me of the way rifles sound when you see footage of fighting in the middle east on the news.

Finished up SP last night. Last boss fight was probably the only thing I didn't like about that game - it just didn't seem to fit in with the rest of the gameplay IMHO. There may have been a couple of places with CoD-style spawn points, but they were not nearly as offensive. I started playing again on Veteran to pick up some trophies. Turns out there is no trophy for finishing the game on Veteran, which is kind of surprising - I don't know if I really want to try playing on Elite. Having trouble getting the "kill 5 Helghast with 1 grenade" trophy. I found a place that seems good for it, but haven't been able to manage it. I have another place in mind, though. Probably needs to be done on easy difficulty or at least regular, because it seems you really have to get the grenade right next to the guy to kill in Veteran. Guys will go flying, but they will recover and get up.

When I am able to get in and the page loads correctly it does have my MP stats correctly. SP stats are way behind. Actually, if you are in-game and go to the SP stats screen, there is actually a button assigned to "upload stats to Killzone.com". I don't know if that means they don't ever load up those stats automatically, although I think they must at times.

Yep.

You can also set the filter to look for games only at your ranked level.  That should help a bit.

Yeah, I have done that, but I don't think it keeps out people who are higher ranked than you. That worked for me the first 2 days, but yesterday I started getting into matches with all classes. It also wasn't the murderfest I was expecting, because you get higher classes on both teams. There was one guy who had 70 kills in a round of Warzone. I had no idea controls were changed with the patch, I didn't notice any difference while playing last night.  If there is a change, it is probably subtle.  I mean if it suddenly became CoD4 tightness, I would have noticed immediately.

I hadn't played enough to notice any major difference pre/post patch. The one thing that annoys me a little bit is the delay from the time you press the zoom button until the sights are brought up, and that has not changed.

Regarding when you start the game - especially if you can get with an experienced squad, I don't think it will be a big deal. Yes, you will be less skilled with the controls, but that would be true of any mp game you were a latecomer to, regardless of genre. Even as a rifleman (first available class) you can have a role and get points. It should only take  3-4 hours to rank up to medic (less, if you have decent fps skills, which I do not) and then you can start getting points for healing which will help you rank up even faster.

And by the way, the really need to slap the "Beta" tag on the Killzone.com site ala the CoD site. It has a lot of great information, but it's slow if it even loads at all, and the stats are rarely up-to-date. The date pulldowns on the sign-in page also don't work correctly in Firefox.

Well, I believe I've made it to the last battle. I was happy with the difficulty level until I got to the last mission, where they seem to have ratcheted it way up. They do give you some checkpoints, even in the last battle, but I still failed many times and decided to take a break. Makes me feel pretty reluctant to play through the game again on a harder difficulty.
7187  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Killzone 2 - Single Player embargo lifted, new SP impressions and video on: March 07, 2009, 08:39:07 PM
Spent some time in MP today and am starting to get a little better at it. The thing you really cant do in this game is move and shoot, because the crosshairs get really wide and you can't hit the broadside of a barn at that point.  Also, I just reached Sergeant 1st class but when I backed out, it didn't have my promotion. It's correct on the website, so I'm hoping it will be correct the next time I log in.

Some of the perks seem like they are going to be really hard to get - for example, it's kind of hard to concentrate on getting 10 headshots in a round. Then, to do it 8 times... I managed to get the search and destroy ribbon, but I can't imagine how long it will be before I get 8 (you have to set 2 charges or defuse 2 charges in a match).

A bit of thread necromancy here...I finished this up recently and enjoyed it quite a bit, and I'd love a sequel that enhanced the good parts (winding levels with lots of action and environmental interactions to play with) and got rid of the bad parts (extended, repetitive battles in open rooms). But really what prompted me to post was that I was inspired to pop in my Criterion Collection DVD of Hard Boiled last night because I hadn't watched the movie since the mid-90's and couldn't recall the story very well. It's kind of funny that they called Stranglehold a sequel when the only constant between the movie and the game is Tequila and the gunplay. They completely ditch his girlfriend, who he appears to reconcile with at the end of the film and then magically create this backstory about his love affair with a mobster's daughter. Kind of odd.

The transfer on the Criterion disc was also surprisingly crappy, and it's non-animorphic. I'm considering using some trade points to get a copy of the PS3 collector's edition for the blu-ray copy of the movie, although I hear they force you to watch it in the PS3 and there are no chapters or anything.

OK, I finally got my copy and I played the first 2 missions and a drop of MP. Personally, I like a slower paced game, so I am really enjoying the feel of weight and use of cover. I have not felt any motion sickness except for when I start swinging around looking for collectibles. Speaking of which, I seem to able to find the cases, but the breakable signs, which are supposed to be more plentiful, I am having a hard time finding. It may be that they just blend into the background.

I was willing to give the default control scheme the benefit of the doubt, but is awkward as expected. I just don't understand why they went this way. Gears basically perfected the snap-to-cover mechanic, but they chose to go with a method that requires you to get right up to cover and hold the trigger down. And this then forced them to use the R3 for a toggle aim instead of the hold-down aim on the trigger or L1 that everyone has learned to love. It's not too bad in SP, but I will likely switch for MP.

Played just a few rounds of MP. The UI is awfully confusing - I wanted to play Warzone but couldn't figure out how. Got into a few rounds of Bodycount and managed a few kills despite feeling entirely lost.

Actually, I don't think that is correct - I had read at one point that this was the plan, but the first three episodes that aired were not the movie.

I'm all for more mature games on the Wii, but I've seen a couple of previews for Madworld now, and it looks kind of...boring. Once you get past the "ohmigodlookatallthatblood" there doesn't look to be much game there. You seem to run around aimlessly in a contained environment just killing guys over and over again. Hopefully I'm wrong because the Wii could use a good core gamer title to get the ball rolling.

X-Play had a video preview of the game on Monday and I didn't come away very impressed. It looked like a below average beat-em up with unique graphics. I hope I am wrong.

Yeah, that was one of the previews I saw.

The charge stations might seem like a good idea, but they buzz like hell.

The MS quick charge kit? Maybe there is a lot of ambient noise in my gaming area, but I've never heard anything come out of it.

For some reason I care quite a bit about achievements on the 360.  But I don't care at all about trophies on PS3.

Does that make me an Xbot?

I'm more or less the same.  Though I wouldn't say I don't care at all about trophies, I definitely prefer achievements.

I may have something to do with the me-too aspect of it, or the fact that achievements are in every 360 game but only some PS3 games have trophies.  It may have to do with the structure, in that every 360 game has 1000 points, XBLA games have 250 and expansions can add, IIRC, 100 more points.  Trophies seem willy-nilly.   I think it's more reward and response, though, in a Pavlovian sense.  I like the icon that pops up for achievements and the sound that goes with it.  It seems easy to miss getting a trophy.

+1 Achievements have been there from the start, so it's hard to be as excited about trophies. As they improve trophy support online, I'm sure it will get better, as part of what is fun about achievements is the ability to easily compare yourself to other people and play with things like mygamercard.

I have read that there are actually a total number of trophy points that is identical game to game, but it is not visible like it is with achievements. This is how the "trophy level" works. It's like XP in an RPG. You can get a max number of trophy points in each game towards your trophy level. The higher your level gets, the more points you need to reach the next level.
