I've been playing this and really enjoying it - the sliding along power lines gives me pleasant memories of the first Sly Cooper (surprise, surprise). I just finished the first island and I have a question and a comment.

question: is there a stats screen? How do I know how many shards I have found?

comment: I don't really understand why they keep asking you whether you want to do the good thing or the bad thing.  Once you choose a path, you are pretty much stuck on it, because you can only use good powers or bad powers. You can't play a middle of the road Jedi guy who uses some light force powers and some dark force powers. If you start out good and choose to do a bad thing every once in a while, you only hurt yourself because you will delay access to some of the power-ups that require the next Karma level. I guess it's nice to have the choice, but it's really pointless and they should just ask you at the beginning if you'd like to be a hero or a villain.

Quick questions from a total Halo noob...

1) Should I really be exchanging my weapons for alien tech right away? Ammo for my stuff seems to be awfully scarce - I've only just started the first flashback so maybe the actual game will be different.

It depends what you like to use, but you're going to run out of ammo whether you are using UNSC or Covenant weapons, you might as well pick up a refill if you are low and have the opportunity.

Quote from: Kemper Boyd on September 24, 2009, 05:28:59 PM

2) What is the best way to deal with shielded opponents early on? Those guys eat my automatic rifle ammo for breakfast!

Basically, hit them with something more powerful smile You can use grenades to knock out shields and then clean up with your weapon, a charged plasma pistol (just hold down the trigger until it starts shaking and let go to fire), sniper rifle (UNSC or Covenant), Brute shot, rocket launcher, laser, etc. I think the carbine works pretty well. The needler is great on Brutes, just make sure you get a full clip into them and they will explode. Vehicles like the Ghost and Chopper work great, of course.

There's been a lot of hand wringing about the special appointment of an interim Senator in Massachusetts, but the fact that these bills have actually been put forth has me a little more concerned on what the hell they are spending their time on up on Beacon Hill.

There are actual bills to make
-the Fluffernutter the official sandwich of MA
-"Fever Pitch" the official movie of MA
-the number 6 the official number of MA
-the elephant(!) the official mammal of MA

Seriously?! (I will, however support making Necco wafers the official candy of MA.)

On X-Play they said it was 8 hours if you take your time, but you can rush through it in about 4 hours (I think at least one level only requires you to hit checkpoints, so you can theoretically just run/drive right through).

For some reason I thought that the radio logs were in the levels, not in the open world. When I realized I was wrong about that, I found two of them.

I know we're veering this conversation off topic, and maybe we should open a new topic on this, but the core gamers turned their back on Nintendo first.  The Gamecube's sales were miserable, and it was arguably their most core system.  Can you blame them for walking away?

Well it depends on how you look at it - perhaps core gamers were turned off by the Gamecube because it wasn't growing with them. If you consider the people who played NES, SNES, and N64, there was a pretty good progression there with games maturing with the players. Super Mario on the NES, something like LTTP and Super Metroid on SNES, then Ocarina of Time, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark and Conker on the N64. Then you get the Gamecube and granted, you've got Metroid Prime, Eternal Darkness and RE4, but reaction to Wind Waker was mixed, Super Mario Sunshine was not great, and it launched with Luigi's Mansion and a funky purple controller. Meanwhile, these now grown-up gamers could play Halo 2 online on the XBOX or a really serious racing sim like GT3 on the Playstation 2, along with lots of epic RPGs, including Final Fantasy.  You really can't blame those gamers for not sticking with Nintendo if they weren't getting what they wanted from the Gamecube. At that point Nintendo had a choice to pursue those gamers and win them back or continue on the same path.

I have to go with the 360 primarily because of how Microsoft successfully stepped in and took a leadership position in the videogame industry. I think with the first XBOX their goal was to get a foothold, and with the 360 they wanted to be a leader, and I think they accomplished that. Live is a great system that Sony is still struggling to emulate. It also turns out that jumping out a year ahead of Sony was a great idea, especially when Sony couldn't match their price when they finally debuted. Nintendo has sold a ton of units, and that can't be ignored, but they don't have the respect of the core gamer, and I think that will have a big effect on the staying power of the Wii, not to mention the lack of HD. Nintendo is going to have to deliver a new system much sooner than MS or Sony, and the success of that system may be the biggest indication of how successful the Wii really was.
7175  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [360] Red Faction: Guerrilla Impressions on: September 23, 2009, 04:25:46 PM
I need to get back to this, maybe after I finish off Infamous and ODST. I got stuck on one of the later main missions where you have to stop waves of tanks that are coming in from all directions. I think my problem may have been that I never bought the arc thing. It seemed kind of useless at the time, but I have come to understand it's really useful in disabling tanks.

I think it was Z100 in New York that had a "Jukebox From Hell" segment back when I was in Jr. High or so. They would have people call in and suggest what they thought was the worst song ever, and if they agreed it would go in the Jukebox From Hell and not allowed to be played ever again on the station (after they played it once, of course).

I remember one of the worst offenders was "Playground in my Mind" which Ironrod should remember.

There are visual clues (and audio too) that point you towards the logs.  The superintendent actually gives you hints towards them.  When you find one it will tell you to hit RB to download, so you'll know.

Nuts. I knew I had been hearing the superintendent talking at times and I even spotted a small speaker with a picture of the superintendent next to it, but I didn't hear what it said.

Normal is definitely harder right off the bat than normal on Halo 3. As far as the visor goes, it's true that when you are indoors you need it, but outdoors you can wind up blinded by it and are required to turn it off, so I think it's a good balance.

7191  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: KOTOR on Steam on: September 21, 2009, 01:37:27 AM
OK, let me ask you vets a few questions:

1. How smart are your Jedi teammates? I know that you can use the limited scripting system to have your Jedi characters use their force powers, but is there logic to it? When will they heal vs. attack? Should I be pausing a lot to make my Jedis do the right thing?

2. I've noticed that when you haven't used a character for a while, they will level up several levels automatically. So, is it not necessary to keep swapping out characters to keep them strong? It seems maybe the game allows you to choose your characters based on how you like to play (bring a droid and a scout if you like to sneak around and hack, for example) rather than because you need them at certain times.

3. When I played the game on XBOX (played the first two planets only) I noticed that the Jedi would go flying way across the screen when they saw a new enemy to attack. In this version they just run over there. Is that a change they made for the XBOX?

I also broke the game scripting a little bit
Spoiler for Hiden:
On Dantooine, I finished off the the "Hatfields and McCoys" quest, but when I later went to visit one of the estates, the owner came out and talked to me like nothing had happened yet. You'd think they would have prevented that from happening.

My copy of this came from Newegg on Monday. Finished it Tuesday night.

It's... more Halo. The narrative is better than it was in Halo 2 or 3, and the game itself is a little better for it, but it's still relatively weak storytelling. The less powerful player characters make for some interesting changes in how you have to approach combat, but it's nothing drastic. It's still Halo.

I expect the real legs to be in the Firefight mode or co-op, but since most of the world doesn't have the game yet I've not gotten to try either one.

Newegg broke street date by more than a week? Aren't they going to get in deep trouble for that?

i would like to know this also,i doubt they would be as big as BF(be great if it happened)...my guessing would be prolly the same size as COD4...but god i hope there are no maps like DOME in COD5

I like Dome. I like Vacant. The only small map I really don't like is Showdown. At least on Dome and Vacant you can go everywhere on the map. On Showdown you can't use the middle of the map unless you're interested in dying. (I've never played Killhouse or Shipment, but I think the point of those maps is to die a lot.)
