I like the idea of the AA batteries; when they die you just pop in new ones (or another rechargeable battery pack) and keep going without having to worry about needing to attach a cord. I wonder if the TB headsets will work if you have them plugged into your TV instead of the console... I don't think the issue is the audio, it's the voice chat part. I'm also a fine with rechargeable batteries - I use the Duracell ones for a lot of stuff around the house. Kind of like the dedicated power packs and rechargers they use now, but this is fine with me. I wonder if I used my PS3 more if they controllers would be dead.

Both Sony and MS screwed up there reveal and anyone defending either company is just looking through rose colored glasses of their preferred brand.
Hm, I thought Sony hit their reveal out of the park and I was in the MS camp this gen.

How else am i suppossed to form an opinion, they do these shows and i form an opinion anything maybe in the future is wishful thinking atm.
How about don't form an opinion until all the facts are, you know, on the table? I have no opinion on either the PS4 or XBone at this time. If a company does a presentation on a long awaited product and doesn't answer people's most important questions, those people have a right to form an opinion. It's called bad marketing and public relations and if it affects sales and/or public perception of the product it's squarely on the shoulders of the company in question. I'm not arguing that Teg. I'm arguing that it's too soon to have formed an opinion on XB1 (and it's success or failure) based on what they've showed so far knowing that a bunch of it will likely change or that they haven't told the full story so far. It's like we as an audience haven't learned a thing in our years in this hobby. This always happens. Press release. People excoriate what was said and make rash judgments. Product releases....and everything's fine. Microsoft opened the door here. If this was not meant to be a sales presentation targeted at consumers they shouldn't have advertised it and streamed it to everyone. It would be one thing if there was a question here or there, but they did a presentation to a group of end users who were expecting a gaming console but focused on everything but games. Then they got cagey when people asked their most burning questions about always online, used games, etc. As the phrase goes, "where there's smoke there's fire." People are disappointed - maybe they are overreacting, but this is how the game is played. Round 1 went to Sony because they handled their reveal much, much better. It's up to Microsoft to manage expectations and handle controversy. It's not our responsibility to play wait and see with Microsoft (although I still am, avatar aside ) There's a lot of money at stake this holiday season, and it's Sony and Microsoft's job to try and get some of mine, not my job to try and look past their inept marketing.

Not all games on Steam are cheap, and not all games have mods, nor do they all have "control choices" or "customizable graphics". Trust me, I know. I have 288 games at the moment. But that is beside the point. My point was that the license behaves like Steam, or as I put it above, the XBLA marketplace FOR YEARS. Except that they have plans to allow you to sell games - but there will be a kickback to the game makers for that transaction. These points have been confirmed: - If the account holder who owns the license is signed into the console, then their login allows access. - If the console with the original install then it will run for any account on that console. These have not: - Does the console need to have connectivity to validate? - Does it need to be constantly connected in either scenario to work, or will cached credentials work? - How does XO handle both situations simultaneously eg owner signed in on second console, secondary account on orig.install console fires up game at the same time? PS4 hasn't even spoken on this subject yet - in fact, they rescinded any clarification and at this time may not even support ANY used gaming. So clearly, they're the better choice if you want used games. I already posted earlier in the thread that there are rumors that Sony will be doing this, and if they do so they will get the same reaction. There is an established history for physical media and consoles. If either company decides they want to throw it out the window, they have every right, but they should not be surprised if there is backlash. You keep saying that this is just like Steam and XBLA, but you are completely missing the point. First of all, people understand how XBLA works. This is not XBLA - there are different expectations for physical media. Second, this is not Steam - I could have bought Bioshock Infinite for XBOX for $60 and later sold or traded it to recoup all or part of the purchase price. Instead, I bought it on Steam for $50 and got copies of Bioshock, Darkness 2 and XCOM EU. It was a choice I made and a choice only made possible because retailers understand the difference between buying a game with DRM and buying a physical disc for a console. Now that I can no longer trade my games, do you think that publishers will drop MSRP to $50 and package games with 2 additional free games? Or have 50% off sales within 3 months of release. I'll answer that for you - no they will not. I understand that copyright infringement issues are your thing but you are looking at this way too academically. It's about business and marketing, not about where the bits are located and the specifics of the EULA.

People understand how DLC and digital downloads work. Have you ever loaned a friend your DLC or your copy of Minecraft 360? How is mentioning that even relevant?
... and when have you bought an "Install only" PC game, which chances are has a license key, and then lend it to a friend? Install is install. The game discs are no longer a standalone product that simply proves ownership based on possession. So yeah ... Steam is the same bloody thing, except when you're done with a game, there is no way to recoup money and pass the game license on. IIRC, PS4 has yet to confirm that used games will play on the PS4. If there is something newer, then I missed it - there was a comment made earlier, but then rescinded by Sony. I think maybe some people watched a different PS4 reveal - from some of the creepy comments re: Kinect integration, the Sony Eye may or may not also be required - Sony hasn't revealed that information yet - but it also does face recognition, etc. The Sony PS4 reveal was unimpressive (to me, at least) and since PS3 sales (at the onset) were significantly boosted because it was the most affordable BD player at the time, I'm not understanding the backlash WRT MS going after the multimedia aspect of a product line that has always been targeting the entire entertainment experience. Yeah, more games. I get that - but from a user perspective, the interface and the benefits seem well thought out. Conversely, their presentation was lukewarm at best, but that doesn't say anything of the product itself. I think their next task is to funnel all questions through a clear, simple and consistent message. They need to stay away from anything that smells of smoke and mirrors. They are completely changing the rules of disc-based gaming on consoles, that is why it is a big deal. You are not buying a PC with Steam, you are buying a console, and there are certain expectations there. And the Steam argument doesn't hold water anyway. Others have put it much better than I could: "IT'S JUST LIKE STEAM"
Except the lack of modding.
And the lack of communities that thrive on modding.
And the lack of low prices.
And the lack of control choices.
And the lack of customizable graphics.
And the lack of free online gaming.
And the lack of being able to download demos day one if you don't pay for online gaming.
But other than all of that IT'S JUST LIKE STEAM so why y'all actin' like y'all got a shaft in the aft?

The only thing I can't figure out is how to run it 4:3 with Nvidia control panel, so it has to be stretched. Other than that no issue at all. No crashes or anything.

The way they are talking around this is so funny: From major nelson: Xbox One and Used Games
We know there is some confusion around used games on Xbox One and wanted to provide a bit of clarification on exactly what we’ve confirmed today. While there have been many potential scenarios discussed, today we have only confirmed that we designed Xbox One to enable our customers to trade in and resell games at retail.
Beyond that, we have not confirmed any specific scenarios.
Another piece of clarification around playing games at a friend’s house – should you choose to play your game at your friend’s house, there is no fee to play that game while you are signed in to your profile. So, let's read between the lines: "At retail" - sounds like very specific retailers. And not sell on Ebay or etc. "while you are signed into your profile" - so this basically confirms if you lend the game to your friend and he wants to play it with his profile, he has to pay.

Non-Gaming / Political / Religious Nonsense / Re: Rand Paul defends Apple's tax avoidance
|
on: May 21, 2013, 10:38:32 PM

I'll agree on one thing. Having a hearing on a company using a loophole is not really a good use of time. If what they are doing is not illegal there's really no value in shaming them. Spend your time closing the loophole.
So you don't think the U.S. tax is overly complex? As with any regulation, the more complex the more it favors large organizations that can pay a team of lawyers and accountants to interpret and stay compliant (aka find all those loop holes). You don't think individuals or companies should legally minimize their taxes? Not sure where I said anything to that effect. All I said was the if they think there is a loophole they should close it. In addition, closing loopholes should by nature make the tax code less complex. My questions are based on you saying "I'll agree on one thing" which implies that you don't agree on the other points I made in the OP. Closing loop holes tend to create other loop holes. It's always about adding more rules and regulations, thereby making it more complex. That's why lobbyist make so much money. No, I meant it in the sense that "I rarely see to eye to eye with Rand Paul, but without even listening to the speech I am willing to agree on this point". And not sure how closing a loophole has to make things more complex. For example: Hypothetical loophole: you can take $X and drop it in a foreign bank and then it is not taxed. Closed loophole: no matter where your money is, it gets taxed Result: 1) completely remove form ABC123 which used to account for money in foreign bank 2) less forms, less complicated tax code. With regards to "minimizing taxes" - people shouldn't have to go out of their way to make sure they are not paying more taxes than they should. I can see some tax incentives meant to encourage charitable donations or getting people to save for retirement, but they should toss most of the rest of those. There may be some growing pains (some business activities looking less attractive), but at the same time revenue will be up and they can quickly lower those taxes as necessary.

Who are you going to believe "XBOX Support 3" or Phil Harrison?
I'm not overreacting - all I know is that I've seen two presentations and Sony wowed me and Microsoft did not. If the fee stuff is true that's a significant deal for me since I like to trade my physical games to other people. Also, I will likely be able to play 80-90% of XO exclusives on PC.
E3 is coming up and I will be watching. I haven't put any money down anywhere yet, so Microsoft still has a chance. But let's put it this way, say I budget $1000 for gaming this fall - right now I feel like I'd get the most bang with a PS4 and a GTX 780 than a PS4 and an XO.

For whatever reason I have decided to get this game. I have never played Animal Crossing before. We should trade friend codes if you are getting this game so I can come into your town and pull your weeds or whatever it is you do.

They should have a feature where you can pick a team to crash their airplane in the mountains, so you have to simultaneously rebuild the team while also managing a very complex cannibalism sim.

Seriously though, even hardcore Xbox fans have got to be a little upset with the new console.
There is nothing to be upset about. Nothing is 100% locked down. If anyone is upset because of a kickoff press conference, then they're loony. It's way too soon to tell which system is going to be better. My biggest disappointment: the way it looks. Just so bland. What happened to the panache of the XB1...er XBOX...the first one...and the 360? Oh stop it, your biggest disappointment was no Gears 4 reveal.

EG againOur man on the ground Tom Bramwell was able to speak to corporate vice president of Microsoft Phil Harrison about this hot-button issue and was able to confirm that a second user can install a game from a friend's disc for a fee, though it's unclear how much this will be. Harrison also confirmed that several users sharing a console can access the same game at no additional charge, and Microsoft has "a solution" for the resale market, though it's staying mum on those for now. well at least that part is cleared up There is an interview on the subject in that link with Phil Harrison Well, that's good to know! Thanks for posting that. I still really want to know what the "fee" is for installing a friends disc or used game/rental, since all games have to be installed. I assume it will be $5-$10 less than the full retail price of the game....since you are getting the full game by installing it. Hm...what if they have contracted with Gamestop to get special codes to unlock used games? So Gamestop gets their cut for selling the game and the developer or MS gets their cut. And then if you don't shop at Gamestop you have to pay the full original purchase price to unlock. See, we can make up all sorts of stuff if they don't just, you know, tell us.

Those are purely digital - there is no reason they couldn't be ported. Hell, give me an option to pay a fee to move it and I'm happy....but no. Instead, locked out completely.
A disc ripped to the HD is digital too. Has nothing to do with the bits and everything to do with the engine they run on, which apparently can't be emulated on the XO. However, Harmonix would be crazy not to port Rock Band and the songs to XO. Well unless there is no way to get the instruments working, in which case I guess they would be crazy to port it.
