The wife and I played this alternating all weekend up to the deku tree. Each on our own save file. And the game is awesome. Even better than I remembered. The swift sail is boss. The updated textures and colors and overal graphics package is better. All of the music was rescored and is higher quality. The fact that they can load the entire ocean at once is awesome, you can see much farther out on the horizon. I cannot stop humming the sailing theme.

The miiverse/tingle bottle integration is awesome. Better pictobox with selifes is hilarious. I think this Zelda controls so well it makes you wonder why they bothered forcing waggle.

Definitley worth the eshop purchase for the 10 percent back. I have now gone digital on this, W101, super luigi dlc, and a bunch of other small games, several of which I got free because of the digital deluxe points.

The funny thing is that I don't remember anybody saying they liked Wind Waker back when it was released.  I just remember all the criticisms over the art style and gameplay stuff.

Exactly and that is why I scratch my head when suddenly it is beloved by everyone.  I remember being one of the few back then who thought the art style was awesome.  Everyone else wanted realistic Link, which they got in TP.

I think the love comes out of desperation for games on an otherwise dead console.

Wow I think is possibly one of the silliest things I've ever read on this forum.

The love comes from nostalgia, and a little bit of hipsterness, also good things get better with age, oh and it being a solid game, and then there were the expectations that people had for the first Gamecube Zelda, when they first saw this they didn't know how to respond. As well, people are capable of looking back at stuff and realizing that things weren't as bad as they thought some ten years ago. It's amazing how opinions can change.

I've always loved WW, possibly my favorite Zelda title. It had it's moments, the map grind all but killed the game, but it has charm by the buckets full.

There is a funny gif out there about how Shigeru is confused, people told him they wanted something different with Zelda so he made WW, and fans were pissed, then they said they wanted realistic Zelda, and he brought them TWP, and fans were pissed, so he mashed it together and made Skyward Sword, and the fans were pissed. The point is that a lot of Zelda fans are dumb.

I know I am getting some of those games at some time.

It looks pretty but it doesn't make me want to buy it.

$100 more and I get a PS4 which blows it away as far as specs go.

I don't think Nintendo tried to compete in terms of specs with the other consoles.  They go their own way and see what happens.  So are (DS, Wii) it has been a pretty sound strategy.

Having said that I still own a PS3 as well as a Wii U so I can have the horsepower when I want.

You do know the WiiU is more powerful than the PS3, right?  Or do you mean that you WILL buy a PS4?

Personally, I have a very powerful PC and I enjoy Nintendo games.  Most games for PS4/XBone will arrive on PC as well whereas Nintendo games never will, so the WiiU was a logical choice for me.

Add all of that, and I think it was kind of off for Destructor to make that kind of comment in a Wind Waker thread...

I am actually contemplating the 9/20 download for $50. I would prefer to wait for them to finish fixing the account system, but I don't care, it is a small download and I want to play this again sooner than later. I also want the 10% bonus for Eshop orders.
47  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: When did Madden dramatically start sucking this much? on: August 30, 2013, 02:50:12 AM
Yeah like I said, I got it free with Sunday Ticket.. I refuse to say I bought the game. Am I being silly. Yes. But it makes me feel better. I have a Gamestop +50% trade in coupon so I figure I will play a couple more games then trade it in and odds are I will get close to retail back on it thinking that new games trade in for like 35 to 40 for the first few weeks.

I also have NCAA 14 coming free with my SI resub, I know I am working it these days, so that can scratch the football itch going forward.
48  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: When did Madden dramatically start sucking this much? on: August 29, 2013, 02:02:24 PM
The only real downside is outside of the games themselves, in the menus.  While they have been stylized and look better than they have in the past few years, they are rife with clunky loading lags.  Going one page too far past your target can be a frustrating and time-consuming endeavor.  Like Madden 13, the EA Trax have been abandoned in favor of an orchestral soundtrack for Madden 25.  This is a double-edged sword–it’s great to avoid the painfully bad playlists of previous Madden titles, but the orchestra is overly bombastic and gets irritating after a short while.  Many of the menus within Connected Franchise are also hard to navigate, though time will likely familiarize players with the way everything works.  Many of the lag problems may be fixed in later updates, and with some well-planned updates through the year, the Madden team can really push this game up into the next echelon of greatness.

The menu thing is a killer thing for me. The loading is ridiculous. I don't like the presentation at all, and I haven't found the menu option to turn it all off. While I feel that there are some improvements, I don't think this is a great football game. Not saying it is terrible. I guess I am comparing it to how enjoyable many past football games were, and this does not live up to it for me. I will play it some more, but after 3 games last night, I was pretty much unhappy with the game.
49  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / When did Madden dramatically start sucking this much? on: August 29, 2013, 01:17:41 PM
Okay I will be honest, Madden 25 is my first Madden game in, about 3 years, I got Madden 10, thought it was okay, but not the mess 25 feels like. I do not remember that version being that bad. M25 feels clunky, they jam way to much presentation that you can't just skip through easily, lots of load times, graphics aren't that much better. Physics don't seem to have changed much, they fiddle with the controls so damned much I feel like I have to constantly keep checking them in the menus to make sure I am running the ball right.

Before that was Madden 2005 for me. So I am not a huge fan of the series, and I can say with certainty I won't buy another one. Heck I wouldn't have gotten this one if it didn't come with an Online pass for NFL Sunday ticket.

Has all of the just happened in the last three years? Or since I don't play the series that much have I just not noticed the decline as much?
50  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: What are you buying this week? (08/26) on: August 27, 2013, 04:22:06 AM
I bought an online pass for NFL Season ticket for a $100 and Amazon threw in a copy of Madden 25.  icon_wink

I have no interest in the game, I will probably play it for a minute or so and either sell it on Ebay or use this nifty +50% trade in coupon I have to hopefully get more than retail for it and use that to buy Rayman and some other games.

I will agree in that the GCN was one of, if not my favorite system. It was a well built machine with a great controller, and some great games.

I will say, that I love the Wiiu too, but not nearly as much or the same.

JCC you may want to keep an eye out for the WiiU Windwaker bundles. With the kind of improvements that are going in the game, from the speed sail, cut down triforce hunt, the in game camera improvements, Hero (hard) Mode open off the bat, the addition of moving in first person view, miiverse additions and the 1080p the game seems like a big improvement. Wish it wasn't $60 but I think I will go back in since I don't own any of my old stuff anymore.

I would recommend folks finding the neogaf thread for this, as one of the users has posted a bunch of mock ups of Link doing "selfies" across hyrule with a bunch of funny hashtags, because, let's be honest, with the new picture taking options, everyone is going to be doing selfies with bosses in the backgrounds.

I love the gamepad for this game. It's simple, but just touching the gear you want to use on the opsat is pretty nice.

Cleveland, though, has a lot of great burger places. Winking Lizard, Hyde Park, Clevelander, Johnny's little Bar, BGR9, and just recently there is a "soul food" place downtown on Prospect that has solid burgers. There a lot of secondary places too. Great foodie town all around.

Just found this stuff called wild brine, like a relish/kraut/pickled cabbage mixture, several varieties. Makes for some good burgers and samiches.

65  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Nintendo doing something with Eternal Darkness? sequel? a VC release? HD update? on: August 01, 2013, 08:11:54 PM
It was initially hinted that GC games would get the VC treatment, and since GC games never were larger than what 2gigs I think they would be perfect. Would prefer the HD treatment but I csn get down with GC games on Wii VC for like 10 to 15 bucks a shot.

Unfortunately I do not have enough faith in Nintendo to give us enough of the games to make it worthwhile, but we shall see. They could have really covered their software drought on the WiiU with a big VC and digital line up close to launch. Give people games they want and they will come.
66  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Did you beat....Final Fantasy VII? on: July 30, 2013, 02:33:28 PM
Beat it and then sold my psx for some dumb reason afterwards in college. I wouldn't even dare to call it greatest anything other then marketing plan at the time. They marketed the game very smartly.

Also, after switchibg roommates my freshman year he and one of my buddies beat it again. So I guess technically I beat it twice since I helped them.

Looking back I still prefer FF6 for the completely opposite worlds and the open freedom given in the second half of that game. And more recently I would put a game like Xenoblade Chronicles ahead of FF7. And that is really just talking Jrpgs, not to mention some great western ones. FF7 maybe a top 15 maybe.

68  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: It's July 25, 2013. What's Your Game of the Year? on: July 27, 2013, 01:15:35 PM
I literally just started gaming again this month, so I have no idea since everything I am playing is old.

Up until the first week of July Magic the Gathering was my game of the year. It has been repeatedly crushing sales records, competitive play is at an all time high, and I was a pretty decent competitive player on Magic Online, it easily ate up 3 years of gaming for me. I really enjoyed the cards, the interactions and the people playing. It helped me find more common bonds with my younger brother, and I found a really great community in my hometown. However, like most hobbies it is a huge money sink and a bigger time sink, and after moving for a job to Cleveland I have a lot less of both so I bailed and came back to videogames(not much better time and money wise but there is CAG and my wife can play and watch too)

I am hopeful that Watchdogs will be the game of the year by the end of the year it has that potential.
69  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: The Gaming Trend Cookbook (Crowdsourced nom book!) on: July 27, 2013, 03:03:51 AM
Chicken fried steak;

Get some thin cut Eye of Round steaks.
Beat the ever loving crap out of them with a meat tenderizer. I mean beat the steaks as if they insulted you, your family and your dead relatives and then spit on your kids. Very important step since Eye of Round is tough, but good for this.

Then, Soak the Eye of round in buttermilk seasoned with salt and pepper, don't need too much, do it to taste.
Let that sit as long as you can tolerate, sometimes overnight is best.

Then in a big frying pan heat up about 1/4 to 1/2 cup of oil. Vegetable oil is fine, peanut is better, but don't use Olive oil it smokes at a lower temp. I have no exact temp, I can just tell by the shimmer of the oil in the pan, I heat up at just above medium on my stove top.

while the oil heats up, take about a 1/2 cup to cup of flour and about a 1/4 cup of corn starch(this is the key to crispy and flaky), mix it with a seasoning of choice, I like to use traditional montreal steak seasoning, but you can get creative. Season to taste here. Put this is a bowl big enough to dip the steaks in.

In another bowl, your choice here, but either more buttermilk or or regular milk or a couple of eggs beaten, but not as violently as the steaks.

Set these bowls by the heated pan.

So in order with each steak, go Flour, Egg/Milk , Flour, Fryer. In that order. When putting the steaks in the frying pan lay them away from you.

Cook a couple at a time, roughly 3 to 4 minutes on each size depending on thickness, desired wellness and if the batter is browning. I personally have the steaks around 3/4 of an ich to an inch thick, cook close to 4 minutes on each side and end up with medium. May go less to try for medium rare.

Let steaks rest a minute or two before serving.

If you want to make a white gravy for it, this recipe doesn't need it, but you can easily melt a couple of tablespoons of butter and slowly add a tablespoon or four of flour and some milk, season with salt and pepper to taste. Do this over low to medium heat being careful not to burn the butter. DO NOT USE MARGARINE or Butter substitute for your gravy, it will not satisfy. I personally skip said gravy.

I know that isn't an exact recipe, but that is part of the fun, try different things, you get the general gist, and make a really good southern comfort food.

So I want this to succeed, but I don't want to support it, not yet. Dyack skeeves me bad though. However an 8-10 hour game like ED in HD sounds awesome for 25$ so it may be hard to resist. Sounds like they have a publisher/investor too.

Maybe this will lead to an HD remake of ED or at least an eshop/vc release

We got it when Lego City undercover came out, never biying a system at launch again. Which was an awesome game btw. Have enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. I like the gamepad, I like offscreen play. We own I think 5 games, Nintendoland, don't play it, Scribblenauts, love it, Lego City, awesome game, NFS Most Wanted U, amazingly not a lazy port but actually a very well made visually pleasing title that is a lot of fun. I really like taking screen shots in Most Wanted us of crazy stuff and putting it on Miiverse. Last game is Skylanders Giants.

I would never have bought it without the backwards compatability. That helps. Eshop gets better every week too. Really like Trine 2, and have gotten a couple of VC titles which are great to play on the gamepad almost throughout the entire house.

Hopeful for other games coming, Blacklist and Watchdogs look like they will use the gamepad to great effect. Wonderful 101 looks great among other games.

Overall happy with the purchase, but would like more from Nintendo, like the rumored/hinted Gamecube VC games. I may just go broke if they do that. I liked the cube a lot. But that seems like forever ago.

Also if anyone was on the fence, target is going to give a 50$ gift card with purchase of the deluxe system starting august 4th, so that seems like a good time to get a system and Pikmin

Not really a typical JRPG, I mean it uses some of the mechanics, but the game is very well written, and does not have your typical settings, characters or story. It's also fairly well balanced.

Not my own original recipe, but this is a family favorite. One of the best and simplest recipes that I can recommend.
Gnocchi with Sausage and Spinach

Serves 4
Active Time
Hands-On Time: 15m
Total Time
Total Time: 25m

2 9-ounce packages refrigerated gnocchi or one 17.5-ounce package shelf-stable gnocchi
        1 tablespoon olive oil
1 medium yellow onion, finely chopped
1 pound Italian sausage, casings removed
        1 clove garlic, finely chopped
        1 5-ounce bag baby spinach
        1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
        1/4 teaspoon black pepper
3/4 cup (3 ounces) grated Parmesan, plus more for serving

Cook the gnocchi according to the package directions. Drain, reserving 1/4 cup of the cooking liquid.
Meanwhile, heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
Add the sausage and cook, crumbling it with a spoon, until browned, 5 to 7 minutes.
Add the garlic, spinach, salt, and pepper and cook, tossing frequently, until the spinach wilts, about 3 minutes.
Add the gnocchi, the reserved cooking liquid, and the Parmesan and toss. Divide among individual bowls and sprinkle with additional Parmesan.

4) Throw Milk out and buy new gallon of milk from refrigerated section of Supermarket. (For best results, go to SuperMarket, not just a regular market)
