15 years ago this game would have slotted in perfectly as a $40 B tier title. Heck it's $40 on Steam. That looks like the right price.

However it seems there is a stigma, and a high cost with publishing on a major console platform. A $20 cost, not so sure, but it does seem silly.

I would have been more interested in jumping in early if it was $40 or even $50 off the bat, I mean Spiders is known for solid games wrapped in a janky design decisions.

I just have to wonder sometimes if publishers have really done the market research on pricing, launch dates etc. I want to say they have, but knowing all the marketing departments I've dealt with I am not too sure.

Even the Gamecube, though, used those little mini-discs instead of the standard DVDs that other consoles were using. I know that in reality that didn't make much difference, but there is a perception problem there. Why should I buy this kid system that uses little "baby" discs when I can buy a PS2 or an Xbox that uses full-sized standard DVDs that I'm used to?

People thought it was a toy because it looked like a toy in comparison to the big black sleek consoles MS and Sony were making. It was a little purple tissue box that used toy discs. Isn't that cute?

It may be a cultural gap, but in America bigger is perceived to be better. So making tiny little consoles automatically creates the perception your shit is weak.

I agree with all of this. It was a silly argument then but people clung to it.

Now a days though? Just go and try to buy some of the better Gamecube titles. People have come around to realize how badass the games and system were, only 15 years too late for Nintendo. The Fire Emblem game has peaked at near $300 for sealed copies. Super Mario Sunshine can go for upper 70s depending on condition and same can be said for almost all of the Nintendo titles.

Not to mention games like Gotcha Force or Cubivore. Granted some of that is driven by rarity.

So hopefully Nintendo is going to capture some of that magic again but actually do a good job of showing folks what they actually have to offer, because honestly, their marketing hasn't been too great since pre-gamecube days.

Me personally, i have no stake. I have too mich gaming crap anyways. I won't buy an NX for at least a year with how poorly I feel Nintendo has been since about 2010. Maybe they will change maybe not. I just would hate to have gaming lose another hardware manufacturer and one of the best at that.

I wish Nintendo would stop trying to come up with some new gimmick for every console, and just produce one kick-ass dedicated gaming system. It doesn't have to be high end hardware either - they've proven they can make great looking games without massive amounts of horsepower. Just make a lean, mean, Mario/Zelda machine with normal controllers and media. I'd be all over it.

JCC just said it but this is exactly what the Gamecube was. But not enough people bought it. Theb Nintendo pivoted away instead of doubling down and realizing they had a great machine.

I can remember many many threads here and back at gone gold with people deriding the system as just another kiddy system. It not only was home to some of Nintendo's best games but it had a lot more 3rd party games than people remember.

The problem was that the PS2, which wasn't as poweful, was just too much to overcome, and MS was taking market share with the Xbox. The Gamecube still sold over 22 million units worldwide and was considered a "failure". Nintendo would kill for that market share with Wiiu right now.

So I think the idea of trying to appeal to a wider audience is smart, that is what the Wii was. The problem with the WiiU is that they tried to be both and got caught in the middle, couple that with being a year too late to market and scaling back the specs for higher yield. Hell the list just gets long when you look at the failures of the WiiU. It is a shame because there are some really great games on the system.

Lastly, from all the rumors the central line seems to be that Nintendo is coming with a system that is more powerful than XOne/PS4 whih shild t be hard to do since those systems are on fairly old tech. What they do with that power is to be seen, but hopefully it is grounded in enough traditional consoleness that whatever gimmick they have to appeal to wider audience doesnt detract from it too much to be off putting.

So I downloaded New Super Mario Bros U, and it is also great. I clearly don't think like a "gamer" because I can't figure out why this system isn't doing well. Is it just the graphic processing power?

I think that they completely lost the audience from the original Wii.  On multiple occasions I've seen shoppers in big box stores confused about Wii U versus Wii.  "Will these Wii U games work on my Wii?  Is the Wii U an add-on?"

Then for people like me, so far the system cost to available game ratio has been off.  I'm not against buying a Box that Plays Nintendo Exclusives, but I need more exclusives or a cheaper box.  I think they're finally getting the library built up enough to make me tempted, but I'd still like to see the price come down or see a great system+game bundle released.

Are you in the US? Because Nintendo is selling factory "refurbished" deluxe systems on their site with a one year warranty and Nintendoland for $200. All reports from many purchasers is that these are new systems. Completely new systems in normal retail packaging. It looks like they are the dented box variety of refurb. So you could go that route, you can still get MK8 at Target right now for ~36$ and you can then get a free game download. So roughly $250 after taxes and shipping nets you the system and 3 games. I would say that is a fair price.

Not to mention Target is going to do a buy 2 get 1 free on WiiU titles next week.

Pushmo and Another World 20th anniversary on WiiU for me.

I was hoping that How to Survive would be tweaked for its WiiU release but it doesn't appear that is the case.

Also hopeful that some of the announced Capcom VC titles hit starting this week.

Honestly I am just waiting for Shovel Knight next week among other indie games

Haven't most Zelda games been open world? It seems like in most of the ones I've played, you could pretty much go anywhere you want except certain areas were blocked off until you found whatever tool you needed (bombs, boomerang, etc.). How is this Zelda going to be different?

They have all been sort of illusions of open world, with the content in locked off dungeons or like Wind Waker had you going on the boat to small islands and still locked off by needing certain items.  Supposedly this is going to be more like Skyrim, just a giant open world and you can truly go anywhere.  I'm certainly hoping for that.

There was also a comment about not needing the right tool  to progress.  Not sure how that'll work and keep the Zeldaness.

Well Zelda was originally concepted off of Miyamoto's childhood where he explored the woods and sea caves by his home. So I guess it really is getting back to it's roots.

I for one am down, I don't need the gated off old school approach, I would like it to be more, you can access 1,2 and 4 or 6 in these areas, but if you come back with that new widget you can access 3 and 5 and find some new stuff.

Don't have a Wii U but suspect I'll be getting one when that Zelda comes out. Looks amazing but when the action started it was basically cut sequences. Still loved the style of it and the direction.

As far as I could tell there was no gameplay footage in that.

It is neat that they are doing an open world but I didn't really need it.  I am happy with some hand holding and guidance.

Not searching for the link, but Nintendo did confirm it was all in game/realtime just not gameplay camera angles. Not complaining either way, I mean, I eagerly await the day I open that game and just wander around Hyrule aimlessly for hours.

I am so curious to how they are going to fill that world in now.

It isn't quite as good but Lego Marvel Superheroes has scratched that same itch since we finished Lego City.  So when you have finished Undercover you should look into it.

I agree, but I think Lego City leagues better than Lego Marvel. The only thing Lego Marvel does better is the co-op. City Underground has a better story, better more coherent world, better writing, and more varied missions. It is shame that they couldn't go back to that well for both Lego Marvel and Lego Movie, both of those feel cashed in compared to Lego City. I would love for Nintendo to fund another Lego Unique game like Undercover.

I keep going back and forth on the Wii U. I want to player Super Mario 3D World, but I can't shake this feeling that Nintendo is going to abandon the system and move all current projects onto the next console.

I can't make you feel any better, but look at it this way, they have only ever abandoned one system, ever, Virtual Boy, this is no Virtual Boy, and Iwata said that they are doubling down on WiiU software. Like I said above, I fully expect them to support the system until the end of 2016, and then move to the new unified software platform.

The WiiU has certainly taken its time to get going but right now it has a WAAAY better selection of exclusives than the XB1 or PS4.  Given that most games coming out in the next couple months are also hitting on PC I donít see that changing anytime soon either.

The problem is that third-party support for the WiiU is all but dead.  The current library, the upcoming first-party games, plus a few other announced games (like X and Bayonetta 2) are pretty much all the Wii U will ever have.

well I never bought it for 3rd party games, and to be honest there will be a lot more than what has been announced so far, they aren't abandoning the system, it will probably get 4 or so years of support, new system probably 2017 or so, combined software platform for Handheld and Home console etc. Kind of shortsighted comment from you. Not saying they will have a ton of games, but expect Nintendo to put out enough to make the system a good Nintendo box.

I have been pretty happy with the Wii U so far, but I was never expecting too much. The games that use the gamepad well, like Deus Ex, ZombiU, Rayman and Splinter Cell show that there is a lot of value in the idea, it's just that it's near impossible to ask devs make exclusive games in this business environment without bags of cash.

On top of all that, I have really enjoyed the Indie selection so far and a lot more games are coming to the eshop, Nintendo was smart in giving out WiiU dev kits and free Unity Licenses to indies.

Part of the reason why they had terrible models and repeated dialog is that they had to fit everything on to a DVD, that's 4-8 gigs. Going bluray for both consoles means 50GB base. And then the memory to fit those extra things so they can be encountered during normal gameplay. Even their model system is designed to use absolutely as little memory as possible, so most of it is reused. Faces and bodies are just scaled horizontally or vertically as needed for the race, then with a head or arm replacement.

Also, all those repeat textures you see, and the samey looking dungeons? A new tech standard in both consoles, called Tiled Resources (NVidia) or Partially Resident Textures (AMD, which is in both consoles) is essentially a hardware based version of the Megatexture tech used in Rage (Id Tech 5 engine). It allows you to do what rage did and have a whole lot of unique textures on a level since the engine will be loading just parts of a larger texture file stored in memory. And because it's using hardware, you run into less problems than Rage did. This also means they don't have to follow various texture seam limits as closely, and can just go wild with the look of an area, putting in more detail specific to the dungeon or area you're in that just gets baked into the megatexture. It's a process that's actually faster for the artist in some ways.

See I don't buy this more/better tech will allow them to make a better game stuff. If they couldn't do better wiith the restrictions imposed by hardware, having more power will only allow them to continue to be sloppy. This is their M.O. Especially in the TES games. I just don't have confidence that now that they have more power to work with that their designers and coders and artists will automagically get better at their jobs. Anyway,  it is the mods that ultimately make these game better but those aren't on consoles.
15  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Fallout 4 - Nuclear Winter in 6 days on: December 04, 2013, 11:16:32 PM
I am not going lie, I loved Fallout 3, so did the wife, we even played a lot of new Vegas and bought the DLC, and I loved Oblivion and Skyrim, All in spite of their massive short comings. I guess that's neat, but it also makes me wonder what would happen if Bethesda could actually make a non-buggy game with tighter gameplay, non-terrible models, incredibly over-used dialogue (see arrow to the knee meme), and I could go on and on. What is amazing is that their games are much better than the individual parts, mainly because of the scope, but god, if they could just have that great scope AND cover the other stuff too I would be in gaming nirvana.

So yeah, this I am sure will look awesome, but I fully expect it to not be as good as any announce trailer, and even with all the extra processing power available to them, all I can think of is how they will mismanage it. Maybe I will buy a new pc in 18 months when this comes out and buy this and then play it with mods on that actually fix everything Bethesda seems incapable of doing themselves.

/End Rant...

Unrelated question:   Why do people trade in games when they could sell them on ebay and make 40+ dollars back in a lot of cases (if sold in time).

I realize that the eBay fees are a lot more than they used to be, but most of the time Gamestop is literally raking you over the coals on these trades.    Then they turn around and sell them for 50+ dollars used.
when done right you can get back nearly as much and it is easier. I prefer best buy for trades tend to get more. I got 45 for Madden 25 for instance.

I guess I'll buy that there's more of it in SS, but I just replayed about half of Wind Waker and it has PLENTY of hand holding in its own right. The king of red lions is basically telling you where to go and what to do. Wind Waker was certainly easier than SS so far... Although most of my difficulty is with the controls and winning even some of the routine fights take me way too long.

Just entered the second temple and am still having enough fun to keep playing, but I know the battles are going to get harder and I shudder to think how much more "precise" I am going to have to get with the sword....

I think it is a different kind of hand holding I guess, not as intrusive, and even though the King of Red Lions tells you where to go, you are allowed to go do whatever you want within limits of your equipment. Also, you aren't told what everything is everytime you load your save game. I know how much the rupees are worth, you don't have to remind me about everything.

Also, the later WW dungeons approach some of the best in the series.

I bought AC IV on the Wii U Eshop - It runs like a dream, plays like one too. I really like it.

I also ordered Sonic Lost Worlds because I am a sucker for Sonic (SANIC!) games

And for good measure I got DV HR DC on the Eshop too, yeah yeah I know I paid "more" for it, but I wanted the definitive version since I have never played it, and I wanted to support the studio on the Wii U.

So for the rest of the year I have Super Mario 3D World a couple of Digital indie games and whatever I can afford on the upcoming Target buy 2 get 1 deal. After that no more purchased until next year.

This is why I just got rid of it. For some reason Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword amped up the handholding to extreme levels. Made me hate them. Windwaker is perfect. It seems Aounuma is going to backing off the handholding too going forward.

I moved to Cleveland last summer, fortunately I don't pay tax on purchases in OH, because it is 8% which isn't horribad, but I am glad I can save where I can.

Really want to play this, on Wii U no less, I want the second screen features and don't have a Vita. So I am kind of upset that the Wii U version is $50. I am just going to wait on reviews and the inevitable price drop. I am in for $30 to $40, but not $50.
