CIV IV, Catherine is offering me a trade I have no interest in.

Me:  Oh HELL NO!
Wife (from down the hall):  What?
Me:  Oh, nothing.
Wife (walking into the room):  What's nothing?
Me:  Catherine the Great was trying to give me crabs.
Wife (walking out of the room shaking her head while simultaneaously rolling her eyes.) Whatever.

All this crap and we still can't get "The Keep" and "Cannery Row" on DVD.

I really want to see The Keep since I'm a Michael Mann fanboy, plus I read the novel this past summer.  However, I've heard it's really bad, albeit bad in very stylish and cool Tangerine Dream soundtrack manner.

Honestly, we (wifey and me) haven't seen it in probably a 15 years or more (I'm not even sure if we have it on VHS or not). Scott Glenn and Jürgen Prochnow aren't exactly Oscar-caliber actors. slywink I just remember it being damn cool and creepy as hell. It's probably not as good as I remember it being.  icon_lol

Actually caught the tail end of an alternately ended version 10 years or so ago; happy ending vs. sad ending.

I borrowed this from a fellow forum member a while back.  It was good to see it again but it's not exactly high art.  I suppose it held up OK considering it was rather cheesey to begin with.  Plus it shows Ian McKellan wasn't above a little hamming it up back in the day.

When I was with IBM I worked with a guy (Goth, not that it matters) who was a vegetarian.  I asked him if he did it for health reasons and he said, "No, eating animals is just cruel."

"Oh," said I, "so what's with the leather pants?"

"That's different."

"How?"

He was never able to satisfactorily answer my question once it became apparent that I wouldn't accept, "It's just different, OK?" as an acceptable answer.

I thought Wal-Mart did away with layaway? I remember hearing a news report about it last week.

Didn't WalMart just announce they were doing away with the layaway program?  Pretty sure they did but maybe it doesn't go into effect right away . . .

This is the last year it's available.  After Dec 12th, thhhpppt.  Done.

Dude, Costco's new coupon book arrived in the mail today at my house and it has a $400 off coupon valid on their 46" HDTV.  The coupon runs from October 13th through the 26th on this model;

That should put it squarely in the 1500 range with the $400 off.  If you need the coupon let me know and I will be happy to mail it out to you.

Thanks for the offer but we don't have a costco here.

What does Wal-mart have to do with it? CC and BB have it also. Your bank has a Debit Card program don't they? Get a VISA Debit Card then it takes the money out of your checking acct.

No CC here and Best Buy has never had layaway.  My bank specifically declined to give me a Visa check card. Possibly due to the $500 in overdraft fees it took me almost a year to pay off at another bank. So it's WM and WM only.

Then go Plasma. Honestly, like I quoted you, that 42" Panasonic Plasma will suit you fine and give you among the best pictures available.

No credit card to order online and it's not available at the WM here.  At least, not the last time I looked.

Now that I'm thouroughly cornfuzled I'm just going to have to back to Wallyworld, do a side by side comparison, and just pick out whatever looks best in my price range and plasma/lcd/dlp be damned.

Unfortunately, it's damned difficult to side-by-side them since they're all twelve feet up in the air.

Thanks for the help guys.

FWIW, for me it's not about being able to see "fine".  I could see a 27" TV at 12 feet away just fine.  But for my home theater it's about immersion so I want a TV big enough to really put me in the movie but not so big that I can see the pixels.  The whole idea behind home theater for me is to try and replicate the theater going experience as close as possible so bigger is definitely better in that case (assuming quality remains constant).  Of course, I really don't need to see Trading Spaces at 100" so, for now, 55" is a good place to settle.  But it's my wife and I are hoping someday to have a dedicated "theater room" with projector just for movie watching.

Kinda what I'm after as well.

If that marks me as an ignorant unwashed hillbilly that's impressed by "the big purty picamature" and upon whom the finer things like lumen count and infinite refresh rates are lost, well, then so be it.

I just want a big, decent picture with no jaggies.

Do you not like direct view LCD's?

Too expensive for anything over 37" and I'm looking for 47" minimum.
2459  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Plasma Vs LCD Projection on: October 03, 2006, 06:01:20 PM
To further complicate this matter I have to let you know that I'm planning on using the bonus money I'm getting as most of the downpayment and putting the rest on layaway at WalMart.  We have no credit cards and would be vehemently turned down for one if we applied for one.  The plan is to put $1000 down and we've budgeted another $500/month for two months.  This is to be a Christmas present to the entire family.  (I want it for DVD movie watching and the wife wants it for football)
We can only put in-store items on layaway so we're limited to about three LCP projection sets, three plasma sets, and one DLP set (which I looked at and didn't like).

The following are TV's I've confirmed our local WM carries.

Plasma TV's:

Magnavox 50"
Philips 50"
ILO 42"
Polaroid 42"

LCD Projection:

Hitachi 50" (This one says "Online Only" but I've confirmed it's in stock at our WM.
Sony 50"

DLP Projection:

Oddly they don't have a listing on their website for the Samsung DLP that we looked at.
2460  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Plasma Vs LCD Projection on: October 03, 2006, 03:01:19 PM
I looked at DLP TV's a while back but it seemed that all the DLP sets I looked at had really bad cases of the "jaggies."

Maybe they're better now and I should check out DLP but until then I'll stick to LCD/Plasma.
2461  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Plasma Vs LCD Projection on: October 03, 2006, 02:01:39 PM
So thanks to a bonus I'm getting from work I've finally decided to pull the trigger on a big screen TV.  Pricing seems to be similar between plasma and LCD projection TV's in the sizes I'm looking at (50" - 60").

So, what considerations should I keep in mind when shopping?  We've got about a 12' distance from couch to TV.  I'm looking to spend no more than $2000.

Thanks for the help.

2463  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Wal*Mart to end layaway program on: September 18, 2006, 05:44:05 PM
Wal*Mart layaway program ends Nov 17th.

I'm bummed. We like to do our Christmas shopping early and put everything on layaway at WM then make bi-monthly payments timed to pay everything off by Christmas.  That way we don't have to worry about credit card interest or huge cash outlays in one shot.

Looks like this will be the last year we can do that.

NOD32 Enterprise.

It's kind of a pain to setup but it smokes Symantec and McAfee.  This is what I use at home (well, not the enterprise version obviously) and it stops everything.

I've installed the Enterprise version on three of my biggest clients, all of whom previously used Symantec and all of whom continued to suffer from viral infections, since changing to NOD32 they haven't had a single virus get through.

The only auction site I've ever purchased anything from was www.gunbroker.com

The way the auctions work there is any bid that is placed in the last 15 minutes of an auction automatically adds another 15 minutes to the auction time.  That way, none of that ebay style sniping occurs.

How about The Taking Of Pelham One Two Three?

Quote
Pelham 1-2-3, a subway train, becomes the focal point of the most audacious and unusual terrorist attack ever seen. Four gunmen, going by color codenames, seize the train and hold its passengers and conductor hostage halfway between underground stations, demanding a hefty ransom else they will begin executing hostages. A veteran NY transit policeman leads negotiations with the hijackers to prevent any killing, but amid the showdown a question nags at authrorities - with the gunmen and their hostages in a tunnel surrounded by police on all sides, how can they possibly escape?
