I don't care if EA lobbied them for years, it's still the league's fault for giving in, though I don't blame them too much, as it's all money for them.
845  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: tv - ER final ep on: April 04, 2009, 04:52:23 PM
Network TV is a dinosaur. I'm willing to bet that within 15 years, none of the big 4 will look anything like what they've been in the past. Cable TV has changed the game forever by producing quality series and it will only increase from here.

There's a mixed track record for shows "by the producer of so and so mega hit TV series." A lot of time lightning only strikes once (Steven Botchco has all sorts of short lived, quickly canceled TV series to his credit though Hill Street Blues continues to buy him a lot of good will).

Well, that and NYPD Blue and L.A. Law. Those might have helped a bit, too.

The question isn't whether or not there's going to be a Girlbuster this time out, but rather who it's going to be.  My money's on either Taylor Swift of Miley Cyrus so they can draw in the pre-teen female demographic who only watch movies that suck.

-Autistic Angel

I bet they'll get a female comedian. That would make more sense considering that the original guys are going to have a lot of pull with the creation of the film.

It sounds as if the dubbers had never actually heard human speech and conversation prior to recording the track. It turns the movie almost into a comedy.
852  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Let the Right One In on: March 14, 2009, 03:49:45 PM
Just got this on BR and it was a beautiful film, one of the best I've seen in a while (not just out of "vampire" films but films, period). The central relationship was conveyed with such sweetness and honesty; the kids did a great job and didn't under or overdo it. Highly recommended to everybody (just turn on the Swedish audi track and the English subtitles, as the disc defaults to the English dub and different subtitles).

As for the remake, I hope that it never gets done. Apparently, Matt Reeves is involved with it, and he wants to make the characters a few years older, which would change the tone of the story dramatically. Damned Hollywood.

Led Zeppelin IV for me. I had a light rock childhood thanks to my Mom, so I never heard too much Zep, but hearing that album in its entirety about 10 years ago really made me a fan of them.

As for Springsteen, his sound changes from album to album, so it depends on whether you want to hear something similar or try out something new. For a hard rocking album, you could go with Born in the USA, Magic or his new one Working on a Dream. If you want some of his darker side, check out Nebraska. Either way, you owe it to your ears to get his triple live album. It is my standard for live recordings.

Not to press the point, but unless Noah Wyle has a disease for which he is receiving treatment, Daehawk was referring to his character, whom I believe is "Dr. Carter".
858  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: ER Dr Carter returns on: February 20, 2009, 07:09:28 PM
Not that I'm Daehawk's paid spokesperson or anything, but:

a) he's talking about the character actually returning to E.R., and thus is correct, and

b) is there any purpose in your snipe other than to express your disdain for Daehawk?

I just saw Zack & Miri and I came away feeling differntly. It was certainly crass and sometimes juvenile, but I felt that it was Smith's best work in years, at least since Chasing Amy. The dick and fart jokes didn't overwhelm the story and he even kept his pop culture references in check. I think it helped to have some real actors starring in it. Even his direction was much improved. *** from me slywink.

It's one thing to be a fair-weather fan, it's another to be an obnoxious fair weather fan. I could care less about the Orlando Magic most seasons, but if they do good I'll start watching the games and cheering for them. The only catch is I don't pretend to be an expert, and if people ask me if I am a fan I usually respond with, "well, no, not really."

I was at a bar Saturday night and the replay of the Magic game came on. I clapped when I saw that they won, and a guy standing in front of me wearing a suit turned around and asked if I was a fan. I started with the "um well..." but before I could start he produced two tickets and said "here, I work in PR for the Magic, take these and thanks for the support."  icon_biggrin

You should have thrown them in his face and said "I am NOT a fan!" Jeez, no integrity slywink.

Although I'm conflicted as to why they just don't travel back to Kobol or New Caprica and make one of those their home. I do realize they still have Cylons chasing them, but the planets are habitable - so they do have other places to go.

Well, they still have a large fleet of Cylon after them, and they (the cylon) know about those 2 places, so the fleet probably wants to stay hidden.

They didn't have the technology to cure cancer.  I guess the BSG universe developed their tech in odd ways, but that's how things go.  All tech doesn't just develop equally at the same time.  You'd be amazed if you read up on the history of technological advancement and how certain events led to technologies being produced.

I'm not expecting them to have a cure for cancer. It seems to me that the technology for space travel, building ships and the electronics involved would complement the technology for limb replacement. At least more than a metal peg.

Maybe they did, but since Galactica was about to be decomissioned prior to the Cylon attack, perhaps all of their advanced medical supplies were already off-ship.
