1090  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Military Folks- Abu Ghraib Question on: December 11, 2006, 12:46:47 AM
I don't see this as a military phenomenon, as it can be found among many tight-knot groups, especially ones that deal with dangerous situations (i.e., police, firefighters, postal workers  icon_wink). Though I agree that people in these groups should have a strong loyalty to their fellow members, I agree that it can be taken too far sometimes and that ultimately, truth and morality need to come first or the organization in question is corrupt.

Bethesda only published the game; MadDoc was the developer and thus, they are responsible for the HDR.

Taken from Rotten Tomatoes:

Quex'cohoatl is a by-the-books priest about to retire from the church when he's partnered with Kukulcan, a young recruit who's rumoured to be violent, unpredictable and possibly even psychotic!! Join them on their wild adventures through the Mexican jungles as they battle with wild savages, panthers, mythical Mayan Gods, and South Africans!

I'm not sure how this has anything to do with trust.  I am in favor of a draft, or even compulsory military service.  I think the brunt of military service is borne by the poor and minorities, and that has made the government more likely to get into unnecessary wars.

Having been in the Air Force for the past 7 years, I can say that I've met people from all walks of life not only in the USAF, but in my sister services too. Certainly, the AF tends to attract a slightly more middle class demographic, as the standards of entry are a little higher, but there is still a lot more variety in personnel than one might think of following certain stereotypes.

I was wrong.  When you are on the world map the top screen shows an overview map and the places you've been are marked.  It doesn't show you where you need to go next though.

That's been a staple in FF games for as long as I can remember, not sure if it's in the new ones but it was in all the old ones. I'd always just run around hitting A in all the tall grass, pots, clocks, bookshelves, etc... in order to find the hidden items. They're usually just potions, but sometimes you'd get something better (like a tincture in FFVI, hooray!).

Yeah I know.  But that doesn't mean I have to like it.   icon_evil  Especially when the game goes out of it's way to show you how to zoom in and make something sparkle that's interactable.

The sparks are to show secrets not just items that are interactive.

Jeff Green agrees with LE..

"The net result of all of this -- performance, camera, A.I., interface -- severely sours the experience and tests the patience of those who simply want to boot the game and play. Who wants to work this hard to have fun?"

Sorry, but once again I have to disagree.  I have an old P4 3.2 ghz, 1gb RAM (crappy PC2700) and a 7800 GS (was originally running the game with a Radeon 9800 XT)

I have never once had a crash.  I can run the game at 30+ FPS at 1280x1024, High settings on everything but shadows and water reflections.  The camera isn't a problem for me, I never have difficulty positioning it where I want it.  The AI isn't great, but it isn't bad either, I have never had it take away from my experience, and the interface is beautiful.  Everything I need is either a rightclick or one keystroke away.

I don't understand the bad performance people have on systems way better then mine.

And yet, the issues are real, regardless of how well it happens to perform on your rig. I've got an AMD 4800 w/ 2 gigs of RAM and an ATI XT1900 and while it runs acceptably, it still chugs far too much for the system I've got.

Yeah, obey any LAWFUL order.  IIRC, Watada's logic is that this is an illegal war, therefore, his orders to go fight it is itself illegal.  Hence, no need to obey.

IIRC, again, he tried to compromise by asking to be sent to Afganistan instead, but was denied.

I'm not saying, "go Watada!" or anything.

"Unlawful" order means it goes against the Constitution or the Uniform Code of Military Justice. The individuals at Abu Ghraib were guilty because they followed an unlawful order as defined by the set laws. It doesn't mean a person can just say "I think that this war is illegal" and not fulfill his or her duty as a military member. Otherwise, there would be total chaos as half the people would be disobeying orders left and right just because they disagreed with them.

ETA: The miltary isn't a travel agency. He can't just request Afghanistan instead of Iraq. How fair would that be to the person who would have to fill his slot? We go where we're told. I've gone to Afghanistan and to Kuwait in the past few years and I wasn't excited about either one (and am opposed to us being in Iraq), yet I went to do my duty.
