1041  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Spiderman III- This Friday! on: May 03, 2007, 04:24:03 AM
Saw Spiderman 3 last night (they had a sneak preview here on Osan AB, Korea; it was nice, but it just highlighted how rare it is for us to get new movies in our theater). Anyway, without giving any spoilers away, I'd rate it 2 1/2 stars. Like the Batman films (at least 2-4), there were too many bad guys, but unlike those, this one spent so much time on the hero, that there wasn't any real development of the villains. I would have cut the Sandman and brought Venom into it earlier. The Goblin story was pretty good, but it went south at the end (I don't use this term to describe things I dislike very often because I find it vaguely homophobic, but it really applies to this; the ending battle was gay. Very, very gay). I think 2 will stand as the high-water mark for this series, as it has for others in the past (i.e., Superman, X-Men and Batman; while they may not all have been the pinnacle, they all were quality films). I have yet to see a truly great third film in a superhero series. Oh well, at least I saw it before most people and it was free.

The environments are a bit spare and some of the textures look a bit blurry, but it does look really good. IN!!

I'm sorry, but John McClane does not fucking beat James Bond.  EVAR.

It depends on the Bond; Connery or Craig (judging from his one film) would own him 3 ways from Sunday, but I think my grandma could at least put up a good struggle against Moore or Brosnan.

John might not win that fight, but he'd take home a Bond souvenir...an ear, a finger, something..

Well, I'll wait to see how many scenes have been cut before I purchase, but the music changes in and of themselves won't deter me from purchasing the sets.
1045  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: WKRP in rights hell DVD Land on: April 25, 2007, 12:11:31 PM
The music was nice for authenticity's sake, but I watched the show for the stories and the character's. I doubt the Thanksgiving episode with the turkey drop will be any less funnier with the generic music.

What's the big difference between TV shows and movies in regards to music rights? Although there may be a couple of cases, it seems that movies don't have to worry about replacing songs for dvd releases.

Goldfinger for me. Judged as if it were it was a normal pop song, it is indeed terrible; as a James Bond theme, it is delicious.

I figured this was a thread about Morris Day & the Muthafuckin' Time.

I can't rate them 1-10 as my preferences do tend to shift, but my all-time hall of fame would include Marvin Gaye, Paul Simon, Myshkin, Peter Gabriel, The Afghan Whigs and Wink Martindale help me, if The Shins put out one more great album, I'll add them too.

1057  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: You know it's bad for Don Imus........ on: April 14, 2007, 01:09:07 PM
The system is far from perfect, but just because the media and watchdog groups, etc. fail to make a fuss about one, it doesn't mean it's bad when they do catch another genuinely offensive outburst. Seriously, it was racist and it wasn't the first time for this guy and his show. Good riddance.

I'm sorry that his family has to go through the hard time ahead and I certainly would never wish death on a person for creating something that I disliked, but I thought BC was crap. It may have innovated the world of comics decades ago, but it was grade-A shit as far as I was concerned. The jokes were one note repetitive drivel and I disliked the Christian subject matter.

Perhaps they could sell it as individual sets. One box would have the guitar, another with the bass, etc. That way, one could coordinate with one's buddies or link up online with whomever is looking for one's instrument. I can't see plunking down ~$250-300 for all of those components.

Grand Leader Osama,

The plans are now complete and ready to be executed in regards to the "Largest Ball of Wax" project. No longer will the imperialist American dogs be able to visit a hokey midwest tourist trap without remembering April 2nd and all of the infidels running in terror from hordes of genetically enhanced rhesus monkeys. Once the word has been sent, we are prepared to unleash the righteous simian fury.

Not to mention that sometimes crosswords require obscure knowledge of things which you have no interest in which means that if you don't know it your chances of figuring it out are very slim, whereas everybody can count and add small numbers with ease.

There is no adding in Sudoku. The numbers are used as symbols. You could replace them with A-I and it wouldn't change the game.

In no particular order...

Ultima V - I slept over at my cousin's house every weekend for like 2 months when this came out and explored every nook and cranny. My ultimate favorite game of the series, a feat not spoiled by the fact that I didn't have the sandalwood box when I got down to LB in the underworld.

Wolfenstein 3d - I loved creating new levels as much as playing through the game (which rocked). I must have made upwards of 30 levels for it, but I had no way of distributing it, being pre-internet. I don't know why I never continued building levels in the following shooters as I found it very satisfying. Also, I always thing of this game when I hear "Achtung" or pretty much any German.

Morrowind - Standing on top of the lighthouse in Seyda Neen and watching the town and the surrounding landscape as the sun went down. Actually, that whole game was one big "wow" moment for me and it's still my favorite in the series.

X-Com 1 - I played through the game on my initial run with the same set of squadmates (named after a bunch of my college buddies). I would always reload if they were even injured. It took a while to beat that way, but I got so attached to my little soldiers that I couldn't sacrifice any of them. When I play though now, I tend to be fairly liberal in my sacrifices, but I'll always remember my firslt squad with fondness.

Ultima IV - When I made my way to and from the Shrine of Humility through the Balrog/Daemon gauntlet. That was exhausting. Also, this was the game that introduced me to Ultima and will always have a special place in my heart.

Police Quest 1 & 2 - Probably my favorite adventure games from the 80s, in spite of Sierra's typically unforgiving habit of killing the player for the smallest of errors. I just loved driving around until I saw that little car in front of me run the red or drive erratically. Can anyone imagine them making a game about a uniform cop these days?

I know that there are more, and perhaps I'll edit som emore in later, but these are off the top of my head.
