Only reason I would be against it is that some people wouldn't want to move and we would lose some of my fav. posters. It doesn't make sense to me but I know that will happen. I just can't understand why a message board would totally crap out so much.

Beat a dead horse much?  It's been a long time since there's been issues; and unfortunately I haven't been able to get a hold of Rip to figure out what's going on but I'm sure he's on it.

For what it's worth I have a relatively recent (late October) offsite backup of the site; and we haven't had any issues since the server had been migrated to the new platform.  Instead of bitching about OO, it may be worth considering that if the problem is widespread it's actually affecting Rip's livelihood.

Anyhow I've got to get to more meetings  icon_confused  afterwards if it isn't up I will drop him a line and find out what's going on.

Yea I am on it. Moving a lot of VMs around and that is causing a little craziness and I have a lot going on besides that. All data is safe on the SAN it is just a matter of moving the actuall OS VM around and getting the servers themselves to quit screwing up, or letting me screw them up. Be patient we will be back up any minute now.

Good luck, Rip. I don't even want to talk about VMs right now. Our ESX infrastruture is jacked right now, and we are really trying to get it fixed. What a mess!  eek

well the reason i'm staying by LaGuardia is because of the marathon....thats next door to one of the official hotels, so we booked at the Crowne Plaza Laguardia Airport.

so how much does the subway cost?   can you buy a couple day pass for it?   and is it best to only do that during the day and a cab at night?

as far as meal budget, we are looking for really good, but not ridiculous pricing.   somewhere in the $100 range wouldn't be unreasonable for us.

Metro Card ftw. I just wandered, and loved it.

I think it's odd that airlines are adding all of these extra fees and charges instead of just raising fares.  The $15 baggage fee, $10-$15 seat reservation fee, $6 sandwiches, etc. are all making the airlines' attempts to squeeze every cent out of customers much more visible than if they just raised fares.  I guess the fare competition is so fierce that no one airline can afford to step out in front and be the first to raise fare prices to account for fuel costs?  I mean, people are going to end up paying the same amount either way, but their chosen method seems to be a lot less PR-friendly.

They're raising fares too.  It's just not as obvious, as you've stated.

As someone who tends to fly a lot (around 4,000 - 7,000 miles per week lately), my biggest worry about the whole charge for checked bag thing is that more people are going to try to sneak on oversized carry ons onto the plane.  That will be INCREDIBLY annoying.

Start sneaking on oversized luggage? I see bags so big dragged onto planes, I could sleep in 'em. And since I need to take tools with me when I fly, I gotta check a bag, or I could hiacjk the plane with my cable crimper.  ninja2

Keep charging us more, airlines and you'll run yourselves out of business because we'll quit flying.

Thing is, they're running themselves out of business even while we're flying en masse.

I can remember when flying was a pleasant experience reserved for a relative elite who could afford it. 30 years ago I used to enjoy flying, if you can imagine that. It was a treat. Deregulation did not work out so well for the airline industry. Sometimes capitalism needs guidance.  icon_wink

I'd rather it be cheap than make me feel special. And I fly for a living. It's a *lot* cheaper since deregulation.

Unfortunately, I've just been made aware of plans my wife has that Thursday night, meaning travel will have to wait 'till Friday morning... which cuts the three-day weekend even shorter (Leave Friday, return Sunday). I'll likely opt for the in-state option the weekend of our anniversary, and keep the other two in my back pocket for a bit later in the summer when our schedules are more clear.

Thank you all for the suggestions.

I saw in another thread your trip is this weekend...what did you decide?

I think it's partially our worldwide exposure, which is new to our species.

Before the world got telegraphy, news and events took many months to cross oceans, and days to cross countries. And since photography came around at about the same time, accurate views of what far-off lands actually look like was sketchy. Right now, I can look up information about Burkina Faso, probably including many pictures and social/economic/historical data. I can find more in 5 minutes than a scholar in England could in a month 150 years ago.
