They are for me, too.  That's my college years, so that's to be expected.

I seem to remember an attempt at VR before there was any technology that could live up to the promise.  Years later, I see the beginnings of the tech to make VR a reality.  I don't think we're there yet.  Maybe another 10 years will make the difference.

I'll give them Diablo though.

I don't.  It's Gauntlet.  They advanced it very nicely.  They were creative.  However, instead of "elf needs food, badly" we got "rogue needs potion, badly."

I don't get it.  How does being stapled to a wall fit in with:
"We want him to give up some of his primary advantage in return for something else, so that enemies he kills feel like they were engaged with them, and feel like they could have survived if they'd just managed to fight a little better."

I can't fight better if I can't move.  Still, it sounds like the sniper can't stand back and shoot you with the bow across the map.  I also wonder how close to a wall you have to be to get stapled to it.  If I'm 50 feet away from a wall, do I fly 50 feet to get stuck to it?

Just out of curiosity, how long should someone play a game to find the fun?  Shouldn't a game be fun (or interesting) within a few minutes of playing?

If that was the requirement, the first two Fallout games would be among the worst games ever.

I enjoyed the beginning of all 3 Fallout games (the first time through).  But, I do understand your point.  Still, 9 hours seems like a long time to play a miserable game, MMO or not.

The results are not surprising but I'm guessing the criteria could be applied to just about any hobby (television, reading, etc) and I doubt it would make headlines. But that's not to diminish the fact that it is a potential problem...

Some of the symptoms:

including skipping chores and homework for video games CHECK
poor test or homework performance  not sure what the equivalent is in adult life, but maybe.
playing games to escape problems CHECK
excessive thinking about games CHECK (you're going DOWN Visari!)
planning the next opportunity, CHECK
trying to play less and failing, CHECK
restlessness or irritability when trying to reduce or stop playing, CHECK
lying about play time, no.
stealing a game or stealing money to buy a game. no

I couldn't find what the other symptoms were.  Also,  I'm not surprised that I personally show the signs of addiction and I bet most people on this board would too.

We could apply this to teen boys and another addiction.

including skipping chores and homework to see girlfriend.
poor test or homework performance  (no need to modify)
playing with girlfriend to escape problems
excessive thinking about girlfriend
planning the next move on girlfriend
trying to play less and failing (no need to modify)
restlessness or irritability when not playing with girlfriend,
lying about time spent with girlfriend.
stealing money or jewelery to impress girlfriend.

Though, I guess the caveat would be that being addicted to the opposite sex helps the species.  Of course, that's what THEY want you to thing.

Against a good Sedna + anyone you really need good coordination of stuns/interrupts. Unfortunately it's easier for them to do damage + heal than it is for you and a random guy to stun -> interrupt -> stun -> kill one of them.

Two health eaters might work.  Combined, they will eat more health than Sedna can heal.

Are you buying armor at the Item Shop?  The very basic body armor gives you an additional 600 points of armor and doesn't cost that much gold.  I find the basic (or the 750 armor if you can afford it) protects fairly well against the ring of fire.  You don't want to stay in it for very long, but it won't kill you super fast either.

I'm finding the game takes some nuance, but there are ways of countering (or at least deal with) a lot of powers.

This game is fun.  I've been playing lan games with my son, which is just awesome.

Isn't balance pretty much the most difficult thing to get right in these games (strickly gameplay speaking)?  Players always seem to find the one unbalancing power and exploit it.  The heart thing sounds easily fixed, but balance the Demigods will likely take some serious tweeking.  Sins had the same problem with LRM units.  Blizzard constantly tweeks their games for quite some time to balance things out.  Hopefully, the biggest imbalance will get ironed out in a couple of weeks.

I agree that if a game is going to be so heavily focused on multiplayer, then the multiplayer should work without frustration.  However, they did say the game is addicting and has some good depth of play to it.

Honestly, the only reason they got away with this was because their only competitor completely bungled their launch, developer support, and community features.  Meanwhile, with an earlier launch, DLC, and XBL accounts they tended to lock people into 1 system despite all the problems that for any other product would have had people jumping ship.

I don't think consumers will buy a console regardless, I just think the main competitor, Sony, just handled this gen so stupidly that people were more willing to deal with the 360s problems, which up until now were being fixed for free.

What's even more telling is that now that the 3 year warranties are done, people are locked in so much on the system that despite the advances made by the competitor people are willing to give another $200 to replace that faulty hardware that should still be replaced for free since MS has done nothing to fix it.

This.  Had Sony released the PS3 at $400 and then shortly dropped it to $350 (around 6-8 months), MS would have been dead in the water or severely struggling.  Seems the Wii still would have been just as huge as it is, though.  I don't think MS wants to take a chance that Sony will screw up again.  If they're smart, they will shoot for the $300-350 price range with bullet proof tech.  The next generation could be an all our war (with all of us reaping the rewards, muhahahahahah).

It's not really trying to be either of those genres. It's basically a commercialized Defense of the Ancients with more cool stuff and it works really well.

DoTA style games are generally considered 'Tower Push' I believe, since the whole objective is to push your opponents static defenses and eventually destroy their base. They aren't meant to be single player games anymore than Counterstrike is. They are best played with a good team that works together.

That all sounds really good for $20.  Call me spoiled, but for $40, I want full single and multiplayer.

I'm with you on the Sins part.  It seemed to be an RTS/4X and yet felt lacking in both departments.  Demigod seems to be the same formula.  A RTS/RPG with few elements of either.  The other problem (for me) is that a good RPG should come with a good story.  No story or really, not much of a single player at all.  Looks cool, but I just can't justify paying full price for what feels (to me) to be half a game.

I'm on the search for a new multiplayer game and I've been eyeing this one.  However, it's been out for a little while and I wonder if it's still worth getting.  How newb friendly is it?  Does the community still have a lot of life in it?  What are the players like in general?  I know the last one can vary from server to server, but games seem to attract more of one type of player than another overall.  That's what I want to know about 2142, what kind of people are playing it?

Mostly I've been playing TF2 and some L4D.  I'd say TF2 is in the middle of it's life cycle with a year+ left going for it.  So would still be worth getting for a new player, for example.

You played on Hydro, which is one of the worser maps. On Stan's, Hydro always always ends up in a draw if there are more than 8 players per side.

The classes don't really get upgrades - it's more like sidegrades. They tend to be different instead of better, though some are clearly better (the medic syringe gun and saw, all the scout stuff is f'n overpowered at the moment). You get them by getting achievements. Click on the Achievements thing in the game menu for a list. Not all classes have them yet. Soldier, Spy, Demoman... hmm, not sure if any others don't.

I know most medics love the ubersaw.  After playing medic for 360+ hours, I got rid of the thing (I like to play competitively).  Pub play, the thing us fine.  For comp play, it sucks.  When I medic, I need to live as long as possible.  If I'm in a situation where I have to pull my saw out, then it's about survival.  The extra bit of time the ubersaw takes to make a second attack has often ment the difference between living and dying.  The blutsauger rocks.

The scout update is... interesting.  Scout vs Scout, I'll take the old weapons.  I just went and played and the old weapons (with double jump) really beat out the new weapons.  However, the scout update has really screwed with heavies, engies, soldiers and the ubercharge attack.  To add insult to unjury, the scout's ball not only goes through uber, but the scouts energy drink makes them immune to the ball.  So scouts (the fastest class that can easily dodge the ball) gets to be the only class that has an immunity to the ball.

The Wii... it's going to sell more units than the PS2 at this rate.  Hopefully some really cool games come out for it.  I know there are some cool games on it now, but where are all those developers that were making super cool JRPGs and robot games for the PS2?  They didn't just disappear.  They have to be cooking something up.

I am have a LOAD of fun playing this game.  Been running through the demo almost every night since the pre-order release.  I definately recommend playing the game on the highest difficulty you can stand.  If it's too easy, then the game will lack a lot of atmosphere.  The boss zombies will also be much more dangerous on higher difficulties.  Not that they are necessarily more difficult to kill.  I've just run into situations where the ai will throw multiple bosses at you and they will coordinate attacks.  A boomer barfs on one, then a hunter jumps someone during the hoard rush and then a smoker snags someone.  You can't believe it when you survive those moments.

If you do play on higher difficulties, it is necessary to come up with tactics and formations.  Running around and strafing is a great way to get yourself killed by friendly fire.  Tight formations with people firing in the same direction.  Think old style military formations.  Make a line and move forward together.  Three in a line and one watching the rear.  In tight corridors, two watch the front and two watch the rear.  Pick a place (left, right or center) and stick with it.  keep a look out at places you pass so you know choke points.  Particularly important when you hear a hoard coming.

Plans all work great, until they don't.  I find the tank can be a very difficult thing to deal with.  If you're careful, you'll hear it before you run into it.  The slower/wounded people need to back off first while the faster ones get into position and set it off.  Then everyone fires if and when they can.  Nothing is guaranteed, though.  An expert level tank can be taken down, it's just a serious pain in the ass.
