You'd think after their XBox One launch with all the bad publicity they caused themselves, they would stay far far away from creating more.  I mean they just earned a lot of goodwill back lately, and now, in my eyes, they are back where they started

I think they underestimated how transparent their move would be to the public in today's age of information.  Their hope was probably that we'd all say "Oh wow!  The XB1 gets all the best games first!  I love XB1!" instead of "Oh wow!  MS paid a lot of money to screw over everyone else!  I hate MS!"

Going back over stuff it's apparent MS only claimed exclusive for holiday 2015.  It wasn't until the Crystal Dynamic Lead Programmer posted his letter to Tumblr basically stating it was exclusive to xbox and PC and PS4 would have to settle for Temple of Osiris that things became bat shit crazy

Rumor seems to be that Square Enix has no desire to go up against Uncharted next holiday season, so they offered MS a deal.  While it's crappy I can't blame MS if this is true

Sounds like a mix of Dungeon Keeper, Fable Legends and Evolve

If this comes to console I'm sure Sony and MS will be throwing money at them to make it a console exclusive...

So for those pissed at the Tomb Raider exclusivity deal, why wasn't there the same outrage at Bloodborne being exclusive for Sony?  I bought the Dark Souls games on PC and would have loved to get the next game in the "series" on there as well.

My understanding is the Bloodborne was contracted and paid for by Sony, so essentially it's their IP.   I think that's the issue.  While I thing Square Enix screwed up with this deal I wonder if Sony had brought exclusive rights (timed or not) would there be so much venom

Sadly, I don't think this is the end of Sony or MS buying exclusive games...  Just wish MS would follow Sony's lead and make more first party IPs

They own the FASA IPs and a new Mechwarrior game would kick all kinds of ass

I believe the Tomb Raider deal is timed as they said exclusive for 2015.  That must have cost Microsoft a fair bit as Definitive Edition sold about double on PS4 compared to XB1.
I was worried MS was going to start paying to delay/cancel multiplatform versions.

Quantum Break looks great.

agreed it cost MS a fair bit of money to get timed exclusive

Some reporting it's not timed now.  I guess to some degree it makes sense for SE to not compete with Uncharted directly, but like I said the PS4 version of TR DE sold around double the XB1 version.  Also no PC version...

Dear Tomb Raider Community,

As you may have seen, we've just announced that Rise of the Tomb Raider, coming Holiday 2015, is exclusively on Xbox. We consider all of you to be the lifeblood of Tomb Raider and the work we do at Crystal. I'd like to give you some insight into this decision, and why we feel this is the very best thing for the Tomb Raider sequel we're creating at the studio.

Tomb Raider in 2013 was a success due in large part to your continued support. Our goal has always been to deliver something truly special with Rise of the Tomb Raider. Today's announcement with Microsoft is one step to help us put Tomb Raider on top of action adventure gaming. Our friends at Microsoft have always seen huge potential in Tomb Raider and have believed in our vision since our first unveil with them on their stage at E3 2011. We know they will get behind this game more than any support we have had from them in the past - we believe this will be a step to really forging the Tomb Raider brand as one of the biggest in gaming, with the help, belief and backing of a major partner like Microsoft.

This doesn't mean that we're walking away from our fans who only play on PlayStation or on PC. Those are great systems, with great partners, and amazing communities. We have Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris coming to those platforms this December, and Tomb Raider: The Definitive Edition is available on PS4.

We know that there are probably many more questions and concerns. Please do send them to us, and we'll answer to the best of our ability. Meanwhile we're going all out to try and make something truly special - the most ambitious Tomb Raider game ever built.

Thanks,

Darrell Gallagher

I think its the big publisher bias as Ubisoft is also falling into this dislike category.   Like it or now these publisher are in it to make money and as long as people keep buying annualized games then genre will never be pushed.  It's the reason why the Indie scene gets so much love.  They can and will take chances.

At least Ubisoft is embracing the indie scene with Ubisoft Montpellier.

I agree with you for the most part, but where I think I feel it's different is I don't think it's a bad thing to force gamers who want something to work for it.  Make some real friends if you want the content, don't hide behind the social crutch of match making.  (and I'm super socially repressed/loner, but it will force me to be more outgoing so I think it's a positive thing)

I tend to agree, but I have a feeling they will eventually cave in.

Which part appeals to you the most -- the access to new EA games, access to their older library, the chance of a lower overall yearly cost to play the EA games you usually buy?

Access older games mostly which I have no real desire to own, but would like to play.  I understand this a dangerous slope, but I am intrigued by this program and I fully understand that I might be contributing to other publisher pushing their own sub programs

It appears Sony is thinking along the same lines as I am, at least if I'm reading their official statements about this correctly. Sony says that EA Access doesn't offer sufficient value to the Playstation users, and won't allow it on the PS4 for the time being. They're holding the door open in case the value proposition improves, but I'm at least glad to see that Sony is taking a stance against it, even if it happens to be for entirely selfish purposes.

Edit: Oops, misread. Sony isn't holding the door open. That was the journalist's take on the situation. Sony's door is officially closed, apparently.

Actually, the way I read Sony's statement is that they would prefer not a offer a competitor to PS+ which is good for them, but if this leads to EA offering exclusive to MS and EA Access this might drive buyers to the XB1.

Anyway, good for Sony as I am curious to see how this plays out.  Make no mistake I like the idea of EA Access and I'm willing to give it a spin

It might seem like a good deal for gamers until you realize that this means EA will stop providing their games (if they ever provided them. I don't recall) for PS+ and Games for Gold. They will want to push people into subscribing to their service instead, so that instead of taking a percentage of revenue, they get it all. They don't care if they fuck over Microsoft and Sony in the process. EA's world contains only EA, they don't care about the rest.

I know its all hip to hate on EA these days be so what? What does EA owe Sony and PS+? Its their content. If they can monetize it good for them.

Tilt rightly fears the other major publisher going this route especially if EA turns a profit.  This seems like a dagger directed towards used games, imo.

If you're part of the XB1 Preview Program you should receive a beta invite.   I got mines this evening and I'm probably going to use this program to gauge its viability for me

My hunch is the XB1 is the test case before it rolls out the PS4 just my guess

If successful this is game changer , imo

From that article, it doesn't look like it's their entire catalog, it's "The Vault, a collection of EAs biggest games on Xbox One".  Newer titles, you get a 10% discount.

So unless I'm reading it wrong, for $5/month or $30/year you can play the old EA games that should already be Games with Gold freebies.

Quote from: The Verge
Electronic Arts has announced a new subscription service that gives Xbox One owners access to some of its biggest games for a small monthly fee. Called EA Access, the service is launching to select users in beta today, with a starting price of $4.99 per month or $29.99 per year. The company says EA Access will "launch for everyone on Xbox One soon." Paying for the subscription will get you access to what EA calls its Vault, a collection of games you'll have unlimited access to as long as you're subscribed. During the beta, that will include a sampling of four titles FIFA 14, Madden NFL 25, Peggle 2, and Battlefield 4 though the company says more games will be added "soon."

Reading this it seems like 4 games are being rolled out now with more later.  Also you'll get early access to Dragon Age: Inquisition and Madden 15 with save games transferring if you buy the game.  If this is just for paid demos then it's a fail
