Just a quick note that Rip is making progress with the data. He's gotten a directory listing off the array, which means he can now access the data again. He'll probably have to verify and/or reconstruct parity before he can know if it's all good.

So is there a way to redirect the dead URLs to at least a hastily thrown up HTML page to let those folks who don't know about this forum or PopeHat know what's going on?  I know there are a ton of Wanderers guild members who probably think we've been nuked off the planet at the moment.   icon_eek

It's not hard, it just requires a modest effort on the behalf of myself and Rip. I still haven't heard from him. And he's the only one that can do the redirect. Also, since the DNS redirect takes a few days to fully take effect, it's not something you want to do if you expect the original site to come online fairly soon.

Just a note here for Rip:

If you want, I can host some static HTML for you in the interim. I could even throw up a temporary board if there's a tolerably recent backup (Gedd?).
I have hardware and bandwidth that'll take the load. (AMD X2 4400, and a 2Gbit line). Drop me a line at johan at linkdata dot se if you figure it's worth the time -- I guess it all depends on the disk recovery.

A variant on this is actively abused in Sweden.
If the buyer leaves incorrect personal information to the seller, the seller remains responsible for tickets etc. There is no known way to get out of that situation...

Using full Mozilla myself. (Firefox is the standalone browser-only version of Mozilla). I use the Mozilla mail and IRC clients as well, so the full package is well worth the extra few megs on my HD.

Hold your horses.

We've not heard from Rich or Stephen yet.

I have room and bandwidth available on my hosting server. I'm hoping Stephen has the necessary authority to get the data from ev1 and move it over.

I doubt this could happen until the 15th given his other obligations.

Rip, wasn't there at least a partial backup made of the GG content sometime back? Or did that ever make it past discussion?

I dislike to speculate given that this is a sensitive subject, but the plug may have been pulled due to lack of attention, as well. Just not paying the bill would do the trick.

Given that the plug was pulled the 5:th of the month... well, EV1 might have a 5 day grace period.

CS:Source is pretty much like CS 1.6, except much better looking.

Gameplay-wise, the physics don't do much difference except when people dump cabinets in doorways to impede progress. The netcode can cope with more ppl than before, which is pretty impressive considering that the physics data takes up bandwidth, too.

Playing 40 people on cs_office was insane. As in insanely fun. There was so much shooting going on, there was no point in trying to sneak; noone could hear anything anyway.

The only other notable difference is that some maps reconfigure themselves a bit between rounds. Like, a pair of doors that used to be open now can't be opened.

On the downside, there's no gun shield for the CT's, and there's currently only one T and one CT model in the game, so everyone looks exactly the same.

I'm not a rumor.  I actually exist.  I did call.  They did tell me the account was cancelled on the 5th.

Could you call again and ask -why- it was cancelled?
If Rich cancelled it actively, that's kinda good news -- it'd mean he's alive and aware, anyway.
13  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Current tech status on: October 08, 2004, 08:39:47 PM
I'm one of the old GG behind-the-scenes tech guys.

Rumors aside, I can say for sure that while the gonegold.com DNS entries still live, the machine itself is either stealthily firewalled (unlikely), unreachable due to faulty network equipment (also unlikely) or powered off.

Hopefully, Stephen will investigate when he finds time and tell us what's happened.
