Ok I set up a Clan. It's called Clan GT/OO. I sent invites to Lettuce and fumble. Vindel you need to accept my friend invite and I will send you a clan invite. Who else wants in?

Just curious, what does this game offer over games like Vegas, COD 4 etc?  I like tactical shooters but I'm not impressed by the reviews so far.  They are asking full price for a MP only game that doesn't even have as deep MP as those other games which also come with full fledged single player campaigns?

It isn't exactly full price. You can get just the game for $39.99 or the game and the new headset for $59.99. The game doesn't compare to CoD4, it is more realistic and tactical like R6. There are one shot kills and most servers do not allow a respawn. Thus you have to be really careful. The game is deep, but in a different way than CoD4. Good teams will be able to stick together form a strategy and move through a map systematically.

I think I am going to try starting a clan to test that out. Lettuce and Fumble are you guys interested in trying that with me. I can create it after I get home from work?
2364  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Recommend me the most immersive RPG that ISN'T Oblivion or Fallout 3... on: October 23, 2008, 03:21:32 PM
Gothic 1 and 2 sucked me in harder than any other RPG game. With that said, you mentioned earlier that you couldn't get into the Witcher because of the weird combat, so unless you are willing to adjust to a new combat control style you may want to steer clear of Gothic. I think anyone who isn't willing to get used to the Gothic controls is missing out though.

I would also like to try and get a game with just GTers/OOers so we could see what an organized group could do.

Here's my impressions last night:

My PS3 locked up two times in a row from what I'm guessing is because of poor net code, and from what I understand it's directly due to socom's fault....and that patches are being readied to correct it.

The servers, for the most part were solid once the games started going (can't say that about Fumble's mic though  disgust) and I had fun playing the actual matches.

I did pretty well I think as those were my first ranked matches and I ended up with a 3:1 K/D.

I think we all locked up at the same time once due to the crappy net code. I hope they patch the game soon. But I agree that the servers are good once they get going and with the right group of people the game can be really intense and fun. The one thing that one of the other players pointed out is that SOCOM seems to be full of older players, rather than the run and gun arcade kids you find in CoD 4. I would bet that within about 2 weeks the crowds will thin out leaving mostly people who really enjoy the tactical style of play and the game will get even better because of it.

I haven't tried joining a friend in game yet, so you can help me test it for the review, But I think there is an in game option to view friends and from there you can try to join their game. Hopefully we can get it figured out. What's your PSN name?

The GT review is now up if you guys want to check it out. review

I'm surprised you didn't mention the level rating system.  Did it get changed for the final version?  Namely the problems with finding a specific description word you know you want to use, occasionally having a poor initial screen of description options so that people might pick an inappropriate description out of laziness, and most of all the inability to rate levels you haven't finished--hurting the ability to warn people of bad levels and eliminating the ability to warn people away from completely unplayable or unbeatable levels.

As far as the online portion. I based that off of the beta period. So I don't know if it's up right now or not.

is the online part even activated yet?...

did one last go-round, & i give up - it's wait for the 'official' release for me frown ...

edit: while i liked the review, i'm a bit surprised that the music rated higher than the graphics - while the game might come up short as far as special effects go, the over-all artwork (at least in the beta) is about as polished & distinctive as in any next-gen game i've seen...

The narrator (which is part of the sound score) sold me on giving the games music/sound a high score. Once he started talking I got the feeling that LBP was going to be a quality game and sure enough it was. So when the games sound is your first impression of a game and it creates a good feeling I think that deserves a good score. Also, please don't think that 85 is a bad graphics score. I haven't given too many games a score over 85 in graphics.

There's a lot of stuff I wanted to mention that I didn't. As it is, the review was 4 pages single spaced in word and I generally try to keep my reviews under 5 pages. Anything more and it's just too much for a lot of people. For that reason I didn't go in depth into the level creation, I mostly wanted to get across that it is accessible and most people will find it easy to use.

However, despite those problems, if you get a good team together, such as playing with friends, this mode will be very fun.  I found a public server with a really good group filled with working headsets and we were blazing through taking minimal losses.  I got a ton of experience from that game.

I agree with that. I had a couple of play throughs with mature and organized teams using their headsets. When that happens the co-op is really fun.

Graham and I are going to be doing a dual preview for GT on this one, but my early impressions are that this game is going to be a system seller. The 8 player co-op works really well, combine that with an XP system like CoD 4s for multiplayer and co-op and you can start to see how good the final game should be.

Perhaps you don't have the headset in the proper mode for the PS3 to find it. Maybe read the manual about linking it up to a device. Other than that, yeah it only takes a couple of seconds for the PS3 to find Bluetooth devices.

A 500 meg patch for a console game?

Wow.

This patch size makes sense since they patched the Beta twice within 3 weeks prior to launch. Each patch was over 250mgs. The console world is now accepting the PC patching system.
2386  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Any Socom Confrontation impressions? [PS3] on: October 15, 2008, 06:00:12 PM
My short take beta impressions are that the game has a lot of potential. It plays a lot like Ghost Recon, in that it is a modern day shooter with 1 shot kills. The maps that I played tended to be dark and thus made it hard to see your enemy even though there is a map system that shows enemy locations when they are making noise and etc. During my beta time they applied two separate and significant patches that helped the game out a lot. Still it can be difficult for new players to figure out some of the mission objectives and what you are supposed to do on each mission. The graphics aren't terrible but they also aren't anything to write home about.

All in all if you like realistic online shooters then SOCOM is pretty good. Also if you are interested in the new PS3 headset then you might as well buy it bundled with SOCOM.

Why not get the PayPal debit card? Or get the plugin that allows you to pay for paypal items as a credit card on any website (its an official paypal plugin). Both ways would work, at no extra cost (just takes a little time to do).

I think I am going to try the plugin route. I installed the plugin on Firefox last night.

I think City of Heroes directly accepts it (or at least exactly one of the major players does), but that's it. Frankly, I'm not surprised - it's not an 'official' way of paying things yet in the public's eye. When people think of PayPal, they think of eBay. That's about it.

WoW accepts it and I was thinking about re-subbing to it for that reason. But I really want to try Warhammer.

I don't know about PayPal, but it looks like you can buy prepaid subscription cards on Amazon and there you can pay for things direct from your checking account.

That might be the only way to go, I can't find payment methods on the Warhammer website. All they have are monthly rates.

Gaming companies need to wake up and start accepting paypal, how hard can it be? I don't have a gamefly account any more because of this issue.

More new stuff dealing with Resistance Retribution and R2:

First, there's PSP Plus which allows you to plug your PSP to the PSP and then use dual analog sticks to control PSP games.  In Resistance Retrubution that will allow the game to use dual analog controls and will turn off the extra aiming box.  Other games can make use of this is other ways.  Such as the rumor of Monster Hunter United using the PS3's networking for online play.

In other R2 news, you can link up your copy of Resistance 2 with Retribution which then changes your copy of Retribution.  This mode for RR is called Infected where it actually changes the story and gameplay of RR a bit by making your character in RR infected by the Chimera virus.  The RR character then gains health regeneration (before you had to find health packs) and you can swim underwater indefinitely.  Infected mode also unlocks the use of the Magnum weapon from R2, and in a joking nod to Halo, you can find intel items which will unlock Plasma grenades that work just Halo.  Due to the Chimera virus in your blood, you'll be able to get past certain bio scanners on doors unlocking some new pathways through levels to gain access to more unlockables.  Finally, the game's narrative will change a bit where characters you meet will acknowledge that you've been infected.

Both RR and R2 sound really good. That link up feature guarantees that I will play through RR twice. Once without the link and once with it.

No word on whether that'll carry over to the US.

Now, if only they'd release some kind of open SDK so anyone could develop PSP apps to be sold on the store...

It's been rumored that the 5.0 firmware update will include PSN store compatiblilty so I assume the US will see that when 5.0 is released (which is supposed to along side the PSP 3000)
