Anyway, played the demo and it was alright; it seemed incredibly easy, though, which I guess 9 times out of 10 RPGs are fairly easy in the beginning. But they have an automatic battle option and I used that the whole time. The game looks pretty good... but the FMV sequences are done in a smaller box and not widescreen.

I played this on the DS and it was way, way, way, way easy.  Unless they modified it a lot you will be able to shut your eyes and just hit buttons and win every fight.

So, where does the demo end? I went into the White Dragon's cave and eventually got tired of fighting pretty much the same Sasquatch / five Slimes over and over and over with everyone on auto-pilot. Does it end somewhere in the cave or are there other places to visit?

It ends in the cave, you could run through the entire thing in less than 5 mins.

They really need a motto at CTU to go with the new decor - "Jack Bauer is always right".

Pretty fun start to the new season.  Seems like they're going to pull the same 24 plot devices, but I'm not complaining.

How about "Jack Bauer is always right, and any new director needs to shut the F up and just listen to him! DAMN IT CHLOE!".

I'm playing through 8 right now and while it's not the best FF, it certainly isn't as bad as some people seem to think it is. With that said I can't wait for 9 to pop up on PSN, I like that one almost as much as 7.

Don't buy the PSP Go. Trust me. Get the older model for cheaper and then if you do buy a PSP especially for this game, you'll at least be able to buy used games (and new ones) for far cheaper than what Sony offers for them via their store.

That said - you should be able to find all new games digitally now. The older catalog, not as much (and as I said, usually for far more than what they're going for at stores).

The original is even better.

Oh yeah? This is the Lunar I grew up with, and dang it, I thought it was fantastic! Get off my lawn! biggrin

This game came out when I was 15 and I used to love that opening song and video. I used to watch the entire thing every time before I played the game. The new opening is good, but nothing tops the nostalgia of the original.

My experience with Windows 7 is that you need more than 4 gigs to run it well. So that would be the draw of 64bit for me.

They can stop selling Wii Fit because the content, IIRC, is in Wii Fit Plus.

This has me concerned. I got a Wii for Christmas based on the fact that I could get Wii Fit for it. In fact, my sister's original idea was to get me Wii Fit while my brother got me the Wii, but Wii Fit was sold out everywhere, even Wii Fit Plus. Still to this day, I look up Wii Fit Plus online and everywhere is sold out. So, I hope they're not stopping production of Wii Fit as a whole.

Of course they stopped making Wii Fit. Wii Fit Plus has everything in Wii Fit plus more, so it only makes sense. Also I bought Wii Fit Plus 2 weeks ago from Amazon no problem. I've also seen it in several stores since then, so I wouldn't worry about it.

After playing through the demo my excitement for this game went up. It's a definite buy for me now. It isn't simply a retread, instead they have an entirely new game engine updated for the PSP and if the demo is any indication a ton of the story is played out through short cut scenes. The game actually looks and plays a lot like Crimson Gem Saga, which is a good thing for me.
2048  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: A cop, a secret agent, and a stripper...house of the Dead - Wii on: January 16, 2010, 05:42:26 PM
The game was definitely entertaining while it lasted. I found it to be a bit too easy and short, but it's definitely worth a rental if you like light gun games. The storyline is so over the top and campy that it is actually good.

At higher levels you'll pile up plenty of cash just in the course of playing (I don't craft or gather resources), but I do recall struggling a bit on the cash end in the 20s/30s. I do recommend at least gathering materials of some sort (minerals, wood, hides, whatever), and then trying to keep advancing that so that you're able to gather in the areas that you play at your level. You get decent money even just cashing that stuff at a vendor, and sometimes decent returns at the AH, and the supplemental income is very handy.

I think eventually by the 40s or so I just stopped gathering resources enough to keep it advanced (at this point I'd have to spend a lot of time gathering in "grey areas" to catch up), but felt like I was making enough cash through general playing not to worry about it anymore.

I've found the tougher skirmishes very expensive in terms of equipment repairs, and it nixes any profit I might've made from them. So I really wouldn't see them as some magical solution to not having enough money or uber equipment.

If you're on Elendilmir server, I'm sure I could get one of my kinmates to make some good things for your level; and I'm sure Hanton or someone in his kin could help with that.

In my kin, one is a high end tailor who can make just about any recipe available in the game (his alts probably are pretty high up in other crafting areas too). Heck, if I knew someone who actually could use some stuff I could make (my L61 Captain's a metalsmith but I just haven't worked at it), it would give me a reason to get back into crafting.  icon_smile

My kin has every profession maxed, so if you need anything just ask, I may need the mats, but it shouldnt cost anything so long as there isn't a waiting list for a particular recipe.

Anyway if you play the game look me up in game sometime. My main is Hanton on the Elendilmir server.

Scraper,

I appreciate your time in writing up this review and I respect your enthusiasm for a game you obviously love (and one that I also play as well).  The review does come off as a bit fanboyish, though.  It would have been worthy to mention that the new area - as compared to Moria - is quite a bit smaller.  It's remarkable how little of Mirkwood they actually coded in the game.  In addition, problems with Legendary weapons remain, bag space is still an issue and PvP is still abysmal.  While these are small blemishes on an otherwise great game, they could have been mentioned.

By the way, I also disagree with your assessment of the Lone Lands.  I'm currently running a RK through that area and the new questing is fantastic.  There are a couple of problems (not enough wargs for the feat, fellowship quests marked as solo quests), but overall it's some of the best questing outside the shire and dovetails nicely with the increased leveling speed.  The changes to Book 2 are pretty good, too.

I've found the new player experience to be vastly improved over the last few months.  You can get close to level 20 in the Elf/Dwarf area and through 20 in the Hobbit/Human areas.  This allows you to skip places you don't like (for example, I hate Barrow-Downs and the Old Forest).  Pretty soon you're picking up the new quests in the Lone Lands and you can get to 30+ just in that area.  After that you're stuck with some of the older and duller questing areas like the Trollshaws or North Downs, but you can now level an alt and never do any of the same quest that your main did until level 30+.  That's really a neat incentive to level an alt, since you know there is still a lot of low-level content that you've never seen.  When I played LOTRO on release, your toons were doing the same quests by level 15.  Not anymore.

I'll have to level up a human to take through North Downs once they've revamped that area.

Really, the main problem for new players is coming up with gold, since low level stuff doesn't sell worth a damn.  Farming the shit out of raw materials is really the only way to start to build up a bankroll now.

A couple of thoughts:

1. I mention that only 1 new zone may not seem like a lot, but when you look at the amount of content in that zone it's impressive. It's certainly not Moria, but then again this isn't a full priced expansion either.

2. The problems with the Legendary Weapons are minor at best.

3. Bag space is what it is, if you don't have enough buy more storage chests.

4. PvP is abysmal, but it wasn't the point of the expansion, so I didn't mention it.

5. I completely agree with you on the new player experience, which is why I mentioned it in passing, but it's not really part of the expansion, people will get the new player experience even if all they have is the base game, so again it's not really worth going deeply into if someone is trying to decide if they should buy Mirkwood or not.

6. I left a lot of stuff out of the review that maybe deserve mentioning (like the new combat auto interrupts) but I try to keep my reviews under 4 pages single spaced in Word, and this one approached 4 1/2 so some stuff didn't make it.

7. I may be a fan of LotRO, but if the expansion sucked I wouldn't be afraid to say it.

Not misplaced at all. I wanted to pick up a few more Moria medallions still for a chest piece, and the place is pretty empty. I think your best bet is to be in a kin who will help you out.

The skirmish rewards are pretty good for my alts that have been mostly soloing. The xp is really good too. I took a burglar from 33 to 36 in just a few skirmishes.

Ale

I think it depends on your server. I have run the Grand Stairs at least 6 times since the expansion came out and we never had a problem filling the group, there were even other groups waiting outside to run it too.

I agree that the skirmish rewards are good. Not only do you get regular XP but you get a bunch of skirmish marks upon completion which can be used to buy all sorts of things from upgrading your soldier, to buying housing items, to weapons and armour and even relics. So the skirmish system is definately worth while.

Also, I forgot to mention that we have a full time ventrillo server that I actually find enjoyable. Even if you're not in a fellowship with the kin it's still fun to listen in and talk while playing. I have a couple alts in Harkonis's guild, but I've been playing an L60 hunter I have that's in a mostly Aussie guild. I love the idea of guilds/kinships, but I'm really not into raids, and that's pretty much what all guilds seem to end up focusing on (at least the ones I've joined up with). After a while, i just end up feeling guilty that I keep saying "no" when someone asks me to join one.

We have a couple of upper level guys who don't like the raids either. It's still nice to have an active kin for them whenever they do need the help. Especially when it comes to getting good crafted gear. Everyone in the kin will make stuff for you for free, so long as you supply the materials that are rare and costly. The only downside with that is that sometimes there is a waiting list for the timed recipe items.

I don't really know why, but the game just doesn't run very smoothly for me anymore. It's sluggish, and sometimes you can see the game painfully rendering in the distance, or there is this almost staccato hiccup as my character walks in the game.

I defragged Sunday, hoping it would help. I've tried different resolutions, details, texture settings, AA settings, ATI control panel settings, turning off or disabling anti-virus, anti-spyware etc., w/ no real improvement. It's like, I think the game ran better on my rotten old AMD 64 (albeit I used to play at 1024X768 then instead of 1280X1024 now), with an old ATI card than it does on my by-comparison tricked out quad core with 4GB RAM and a fairly decent, current ATI card. I just don't get it sometimes. I'm no Vista 64-bit aficionado, but I don't think I can blame it on the OS cause some other games run smooth as glass.

Some of my shooters (the L4D games, Borderlands, both of which I bought on Steam) run great, others like COD:MW1 (which I have on disc) don't. I am really stumped sometimes. Oh well, some time I'll post about it in the software/hardware section.

Yesterday some guy kept kill-stealing from me on the repeatable quests (on purpose-not accidentally afik). I kept thinking -- how the heck does someone get to L60 and still do that sort of garbage?  disgust

I don't have any good advice for the performance issue. I do know that I had to install the latest Nvidia drivers after the expansion in order to get good performance on one of my comps. But you have an ATi card so not sure about those drivers.

As for the kill stealing issue I usually just invite those players to a fellowship. I know it sucks teaming up with an asshat, but at least you guys both get credit for the kills he steals, plus it makes the daily Kill X quests go really quick.

Also weren't you in my kin on Elendilmir at one time? If not you should think about joining, we have an active base of players and they are all willing to help out if you ask for it. At this point in the game we have beaten all of the 6 man skirmishes and we're working our way through tier 2 and 3 difficulties with them.

Hello, I am on the Elendilmir server and a part of the StormHaven guild but they are not very active anymore. Would it be ok to join up with your kin? What is your kin named? How would I apply? Thanks

You can definitely join. We have an open door policy for GT forum members. All you have to do to join is send me a tell in game, my main is named Hanton. You could also try Stucco or Annabell and just tell them that Hanton referred you. The kin name is Watchers of Middle Earth. I would say it's a medium sized kin, there are no required events or anything like that but we do schedule regular kin runs and events. It's really a play at your own pace type of kin, but we do have a good sized group of regular players. Anyway check out the website at www.watchersome.com . Also I should be in game today from 3pm eastern until about 5:30 pm and then again later in the night.

Canada takes their gun laws seriously.

a Toronto man who happens to be a big LEGO fan, was working in a downtown office on Friday when the replica gun made from LEGO that he’d ordered from online retailer BrickGun arrived. He assembled the model and later closed his office door for a conference call and that’s when someone who could see in his window from a neighboring building called police to report lone man sitting in an office with a gun.

The SWAT team was dispatched and the incident ended with the man cuffed against a wall while six officers armed with assault rifles and shotguns secured the LEGO.

That's nuts. Thank you founding fathers for the 2nd amendment.

If you'll let me obsess again -- I still would love to have quests in Mirkwood be more interesting than "picking up filth" and fetching junk off of "decaying orc corpses," and then having the same said requests be repeatable. Somehow, on top of the "picking up sticks," "fetching lunch sacks" and "picking up garbage" quests in certain previous zones, it's a little hard for my characters to feel like epic adventurers. At times, they feel more like overdressed Sanitation Workers.  icon_razz Who writes these quests? Clearly it was inspired by Tolkien, like so...

Quote
The change in the wizard's voice was astounding.
Suddenly it became menacing, powerful, harsh as stone.
A shadow seemed to pass over the high sun,
and the porch for a moment grew dark.
All trembled, and the Elves stopped their ears.
"Clearly Georic must pick up the filth, fetch the lunch sacks, snatch the sticks from the ground and pick up the garbage," said Elrond, as the shadow passed and the company breathed once more.
"And let us hope that none will ever speak it here again," answered Gandalf.
OK, end obsession.  icon_smile

I'm all fine on skirmishing now, it's cool and I'm doing various things in Mirkwood. Easiest way for my L60 to do the little 10-hunt was to ride a little south of the 21st hall. And it was an OK way to remember how to play after so long away.

* One question though. When I try to go east in Lothlorien/Mirkwood along that river for what I think is Book 9 Chapter 1 (something like that), I get "insta-killed" the moment I step past this gate. I assume, like the cursed statues area in Angmar, that I have to meet some sort of "pre-requisite" to "unlock" safe access through that area. Any ideas? I've done some searches at official forums but haven't seen it mentioned so far.

ADDENDUM: OK, duh, I read the letter warning me the above. I guess I'm still not 100% sure what I have to do to gain safe access, but hopefully I'll stumble into it.

I was wondering why the game was running so sluggishly and I just realized my main hard drive is 42% fragmented. Oops.  icon_redface

Yeah you need to raise your reputation to get anywhere near Caras Galadhrim. (In this way it sticks with lore, remember that Gimli had to be blind folded to cross the river and therefore the entire Fellowship chose to blindfold themselves).

Anyway, just take all of the dailies in the opening loth camps and you should have enough to get in. Once inside you have to go to the docks and take a boat over to Mirkwood.

For my main (A Warden) the combat changes are awesome. Adding Auto Attack interrupt speeds up your attacks tremendously. I can actually deal out more damage now than I could before, simply because I can build my gambits that much faster. So IMO the combat changes are good.

Understandable.  An old friend and I happened to log in at the same time to check out the Skirmish mechanic and sure enough sat there outside Esteldin going, "Where the hell should we go to find non-grey level stuff we need?"

It ended up being more of a chore than I anticipated just to get things kicked off.

I was really surprised by their decision to do it this way too. They introduce an entirely new game concept and mechanic, which is a lot different than anything else in the game and they start it out by doing the most redundant and cliche thing you can do in an MMO. Oh well, at least once that is done the skirmish mode is good. I'm amazed at it's scalability. A solo instance is much different once you bump it up to a 6 man. I haven't tried an y12 mans yet, but I imagine they are crazy.

Apparently the 12-mans are indeed crazy. I read a report on the Turbine forums where an established kin wiped on the end encounter doing the 12-man Thievery and Mischief (the south Bree one) since there are 3-4 bosses of Arch-Nemesis level in front of the town hall. Not sure I'll ever do a 12-man, but I'm looking forward to 3 and 6 man versions. So far I've only done a few solo.

As for the skirmish-gating being a kill quest, yeah that was unnecessary. Just let people start the tutorial.

I did the 6-man version with my kin. In that version there are 3 Arch bosses each with 79,000K hit points standing in front of the town hall. It took us three attempts but we eventually figured out a good strategy and beat it. It's a bitch because one guy is a brute and stuns, the other guy has a massive AOE and the third one will completely heal all three of them. So on the third try we tanked the AOE guy and the brute and we killed the healer. The key is to use interrupts, otherwise she keeps healing and will live no matter how hard you hit her.

I got nothing (I'll check inventory tonight). All the login splash screens say Mirkwood, but maybe I'm not really upgraded to Mirkwood.

This thread attempts to explain all the upgrading stuff (I'm in the "Lifetime Subscriber who pre-ordered the adventurer pack" camp):

Turbine Download Manager seems to have been such an unmitigated, continuing disaster for so many players, I don't quite understand why they don't just bag it.

Maybe Im lucky then, because the game DLed for me via the DL manager and I had zero problems. I think a lot of times the boards get swamped with the vocal minority who do have issues, people who don't experience a problem have no reason to chime in.

I'm in the market for a 9800GT PCi videocard or the ATi equiivelant. I don't have any money to throw at it, but I do have an assortment of games that you could choose from. Put together an offer for which games you want and let me know. I'm willing to trade multiple games for a decent card.

FT:

PS3:
Street Fighter 4
NHL 2K10
NBA2K10
Cross Edge
Dead Space
FarCry 2
Little Big Planet
Madden 10

Wii:

Call of Duty 5

Xbox 360:

I have a bunch of other games I could trade, so if you don't see enough that you want, let me know and I will see what if I have it or not.

So this friend of ours wants to borrow my pick me up truck. I say okay, no problem. As soon as the wife finds out she insists I spend $6 at the car wash on it or hose it down myself.
Because as we all know............................
I hosed it down and hide it by the side of the house so she can't see it.

If she wants it cleaned that badly can't she do it herself?

In spite of a thousand dev tracker posts, I can't see this basic information -- how do you start doing Skirmish stuff? I don't know what contact or place to look for. There's no tips in-game on that afik. It's like they just expect you to know through ESP.  icon_confused I've checked the Help section, LOTRO Wiki etc. If that basic info's there, I can't seem to find it.

Apparently Ctrl-J is the "secret key combo" for joining/forming skirmishes at any time:

Yeah. Ctrl J is the Skirmish Join panel. You can also access it from the new main menu. The Skirmish Join Panel lets you join a skirmish wherever you are, so that no travel is involved. I like that!
That's probably in the option menu keybinding settings or something, but you'd think they'd splash it on screen the first time you login post-Mirwood, as a clue to the clueless among us.  icon_razz

When I logged into the game I got a message giving me a quest to start the Skirmish modes. I also got a letter in my inventory. So if none of that happened then you may be bugged. I know I started my first skirmish mode in Lothlorian. They added a new skirmish camp just north of the river near the broken bridge.

I went and paid for those little perk things (I forget the name) that is supposed to get you Mirkwood for free. Do we have to sort of download Mirkwood as a separate file, or is it part of the client updating process? Just asking cause sometimes it's tough to comb through the FAQs for a straight answer.  icon_smile

it's part of the client update process. If you have the turbine download manager installed then it should be updating the game automatically, if you don't then it will start updating when you log in.

I set the game up to Dl the expansion while I'm at work today. Hopefully it's done when I get home and I can play tonight.
