121  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PS3/PS4/Vita] MLB 14 The Show on: May 07, 2014, 05:41:42 PM

Received it yesterday.  Tried to play over lunch hour yesterday but the install and required download for teams took too long.  Expect a wait that first time, if running it via the retail disc.

Played a couple Live games last night and some RTTS.  There's a definite improvement in animations, improved visuals (though not drastic) and other than that, it's The Show.  Stadium models are awesome, at least the ones I saw.  Same options for pitching or hitting, customizable camera views.  I thought the play-by-play got more repetitive than last year's so I don't know if they didn't prepare as many lines, or what.

It does play a great of baseball. The physics definitely feel right - the hits, the fouls, the plays and base running.  I'm having a heck of a time getting throws across the diamond in time to get runners so there's something different about the fielder throwing.  Also saw some plays in the minors that should probably have been errors that were scored errors - but also saw lots of errors, too - so maybe the official scorer just sucks in some stadiums.  Also noticed more variation in the umpires - some miss obvious calls - others will miss a call but then give you a make-up call on the next pitch - you definitely have to pitch to their strike zone.

Those who play it - which pitching method do you prefer?  Pulse? Meter?

Great game. Haven't tried the cross-play on Vita yet.

I can't get the hang of pulse pitching at all. I still haven't decided if I like meter or classic better. For now I'm using classic though.

I'm downloading it as I type. The game requires 40 gigs though, so I have very little hope of actually playing it today. Although the initial download is only 5 gigs, so hopefully that 5 gigs includes the Road to the Show or Franchise Mode at the least.

I accidentally dropped it in a lake. I was able to retrieve it quickly, but the damage was done. I took it apart and let it sit in a bag of rice for a week, but it won't even power up now.
ouch.  hopefully the memory card survives.  Don't bury it just yet.  if you can take it apart maybe you can get it dry enough on the inside.

I took it apart the day it happened. There wasn't a ton of water in it, but apparently it was enough because it won't power up at all. The vita is actually very easy to take apart and put back together again.

Bound By Flame for me but I'm waiting for reviews. I'm sure The Show is great but I'm just not enough of a baseball fan to plunk $60 on it.

I haven't watched a game of Baseball in over a year, but I freaking love the Show. Allegedly they also added a feature this year where you can play a complete game in 20 minutes, which means I may make it through several seasons this year. My personal best is 4 complete seasons with The Show 2010. I will probably also start a season and stop after the first season so I can carry that team over to next years game.

SO back on topic I will be getting The Show. I also ruined my Vita last week so I'm thinking about picking up the Vita Borderlands bundle as well.

1.70 is now available, and the hunt for hidden changes begins. People are reporting vastly improved response times in the UI, and particularly in the PS Store.

Pre-loading games is big, so is being able to control the brightness on the controller LED. I don't care about all the new steaming and video recording stuff... what portion of PS4 users does that even affect, less than 5%?

It indirectly affects everyone. Any time you watch someone stream a PS4-game on Twitch or put up PS4 videos on YouTube (unless they've got their own capture card), you'll benefit from these updates. Since the streams are now shown in the activity view, they're also becoming a more prominent part of the console.

I mean I don't do any of those things, so *everyone* is a bit of a stretch.

Okay, "everyone" then. I suspect most people who have a PS4 at this point in time also view gaming-related YouTube videos from time to time, or watch gaming streams (an increasingly popular activity, apparently).

I don't.

Me either. Not even sure how you go about doing this.

I have zero interest in watching other people play games on youtube/whatever and I don't know why anyone would want to watch me play games on whatever interweb service I post it up on.

I do love to record my gaming on my Betamax and personally watch it back for review though.  icon_lol

Ratings-wise, imho it was a mistake to counter-program an old ratings warhorse like NCIS. I don't see Agents ever having strong ratings against it. Not even if they turn Coulson into Thanos, Maria Hill into a strip tease dancer, Sky into a virtual prostitute and Ward into a robot Nazi.  retard So my theory is find a time slot where fans can find it but where it won't get pummeled into the ratings by a top-5 show that has built up a huge audience over many seasons.

My gut feeling is ABC/Disney will renew the show so as to not tick off Joss Whedon by firing his brother and sister-in-law. And perhaps they think if the show survives long enough, maybe Whedon will get more directly involved in the show once Avengers: Age of Ultron's released (almost exactly 1 year from now - May 1, 2015).

I bet Josh wants the show around until Avengers 2 comes out for story telling purposes. So he may have more invested in the show than just his relatives.

Again this shouldn't be a shocker when you have a conservative Supreme Court. The only real surprise here is that Scalia spoke out against it so strongly. Especially after he just publicly stated that the 4th amendment is not absolute (when referring to mass data collection).

I don't think either side of the political spectrum can claim the high ground on the issue of domestic espionage any more.  I've been really vocal about about tearing down the "Both Sides Do It" false equivalences we see so often in American politics, but casual erosion of personal privacy rights is something the Democratic and Republican parties both own.

And that's the problem: as a liberal who absolutely abhors this easy-access data mining of innocent civilians, who can I vote for to roll back these powers?  Chris Christie?  Hillary Clinton?  Jeb Bush or Joe Biden?  The only political figure I can even imagine abandoning these tactics is Elizabeth Warren, and there's zero indication she's planning a presidential run.

I'm not a single-issue voter, but all other things being equal, I would vote for any candidate who vowed to curtail these domestic spying programs.  It's right up there with their failure to improve the VA system on my list of the Obama administration's biggest failures.

Of course if you believe in capitalism and a free market this decision was the correct one. In the end consumer voices should decide the issue, not government regulation.

This doesn't even include the laundry list of things he has done to his own country to prevent Democracy and retain his power.

Way, way too early in the generation to start predicting winners and losers, anyhow.

We don't have a complete picture until we get the 360 data. Why would Titanfall create a substantial demand for XB1s with a comparable 360 version around the corner? It doesn't make sense to me.

I agree. I don't own an Xboxone, but I still have two other platforms I could play Titanfall on. The game doesn't interest me, but even if it did I don't need a Bone to play it.

So is  term limits the answer?

Perhaps even for SCOTUS?

6 years for the POTUS
6 years for Reps
8 years for Senate
18 years for SCOTUS?

Those term limits don't really make sense. POTUS should and is 8, reps could be 6 and probably should be, Senate is a 6 year term so maybe a 12 year limit. Scotus should just be an age limit, like the rest of the federal court system.

I talked to my wife and we're going to try to cut the cord (mostly) in July when our current cable deal is up. The biggest heartache for us is going to be giving up the kid channels. While Netflix has TONS of kid content, it's still a bit of a pain vs just turning on Disney Jr. and letting it run.

We're going to try to go back to a basic cable package for $20/month. This will give us all the major channels (which is pretty much all we watch anyway), and we'll have Netflix and Hulu to fill in the gaps for anything else. Worst case scenario we cave and wind up going back up to a tier that gives us the kid's channels. Even then we'll still be saving a little money over the full blown package we have now.

If you have Amazon Prime they have all of the Nickelodeon programming.

The way the game ends is vastly different with evil. Also I liked the video power set a lot more as evil. My evil play through on expert mode only took me about 6 hours, so I would say play through it again for the evil and then trade it in. I should mention that I didn't do all of the side missions on the 2nd play through. Just enough to unlock fast travel in a couple of zones.

And I'm done.

The DLC is pretty short. Basically two areas. The next-to-impossible first area and then the doable second area. It probably took me about 6-7 hours to finish. But I'd say 3-4 of those hours are in the first area just with all the deaths and re-loading. The second area wasn't a complete breeze, and had some pretty annoying setups for battles, but I didn't run in to any major issues. If it wasn't for the setup of the first area the DLC probably would have taken all of two and half hours to complete.

Overall the DLC was not fun.

I may try the DLC one day, but your report is more than enough to put me off for now.

The core game is a lot of fun.  Good, old school turn based, party based rpg.  My only complaint is that the game engine performed poorly in certain areas of the game world.  There's an area in the NW corner of the world that crushed my framerate, and I have a decent rig.

The engine for this game is just terrible. I don't understand why they went the route they did. Why not just use an established Engine like Unreal 3 and modify it to the game. For starters it would have looked much better and it would have actually performed much better. Plus it would be much more future proof for sequels than the MMX engine is. I don't get it. But hey the game was still fun anyway.

I'm out in the country so my provider choice is either Dish or Direct. What I normally do is ride out the 2 year contract period, then switch back to the other company for their 1 year promo deal. But that gets old.

I did dial down the channels I subscribe to. I'm down to the smallest package available and that saved me about $40 a month. Still it would be nice to be able to stream everything I wanted through the PS4 or a similar device.

Performance analysis: Titanfall on Xbox 360

Yep, again showing why there was a complete media blackout on the 360 version along with the delay. It was too good and MS was probably worried it would reflect poorly on the XB1, if launched at the same time. Smart business move, but not really fair to the consumer.

It's actually kind of amazing how well the 360 hardware has held up over time. I have to believe that the hardware was designed at some point in 2004. Making it 10 year old hardware capable of running a modern game without too much compromise. To put that in perspective that would be like trying to get a PS1 or N64 game to play on the NES.

I would STRONGLY recommend holding off on watching tonight's episode if you haven't seen Captain America yet. It won't completely ruin the movie, but I think that CA will be more enjoyable without seeing what happens on tonight's SHIELD. They didn't waste any time jumping right into the huge changes that one would expect after seeing The Winter Soldier, and they give up quite a few secrets that would take some of the surprise out of the movie.

Warnings aside, tonight was probably the best episode of AoS so far, and it's pretty awesome to see the way that they're pulling all parts of the Marvel universe together. Now I'm really curious to see what happens next week. At this point, I can totally see AoS setting the stage for the next round of Marvel films...very cool  icon_cool

Thanks for the warning. I think what I will do is save the rest of the season, then watch them all at once after I see Captain America. Which probably won't happen until it comes out on Blu-Ray.

There's an ESPN.GO app for the Roku that functions just like HBO.GO.  But that means you'll have to keep at least the minimum service from your cable company and add ESPN, most likely.

That's the problem. Just let me pay $5 a month to use ESPN go and I'm all set. $7.99 for Netflix, $7 for Amazon Prime, Whatever HULU Plus costs, plus $5 for Espn and I would see huge savings.
