Zelda is easily #1

Then in no particular order:

God of War
Horizon Zero dawn
Resident Evil 7
Trails of Cold Steel 2 (I haven't gotten around to it yet)
Trails of Cold Steel 3
The new Mario game on Christmas day
2  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Nintendo Switch - the NX unveiled on: January 13, 2017, 06:08:19 PM
I put a pre-order in on Amazon.

I skipped the WiiU and that's the first Nintendo console that I have not owned. So the Switch will be a welcome return to Nintendo for me.

I love the fact that the memory is MicroSD and not proprietary. I also like the idea of the docking station with a portable unit. Not sure how much I will actually use it in portable mode, but I'm guessing my kids will play the heck out of it that way when I'm watching TV.

I hope they make some of the WiiU games available for this via download. Specifically Wind Waker HD and the Mario action games.

I also hope that Nintendo introduces some kind of Trophy/Achievement system. Being a competitionist junkie I really want that feature.

Mario (Weird Mario in the real world is a no go for me)

If you watch the gameplay videos it looks like the real world setting is a minimal part of the game. Most of the actual gameplay sections look like standard Mario goodness set in a fictional world. Time will tell.

HAs anyone figured out a good place to pre-order the Switch online?

By the way, if you don't have a PS3 or PS Vita (Gratch), this game is apparently compatible with the PS Vita TV thing. So you could buy the PS Vita version and play it on that (if you had a dual shock lying around. So a $45 investment rather than whatever a ps3 or PS Vita cost.

PSNow is also an option. If you have a PS4 this is definitely the cheapest option if you can beat the game within 3 months.

I'm about 14-15 hours into the game now. I'm still enjoying it, but the game is a very slow burn. I have yet to be introduced to the game's main antogonist, or the thematic conflict that will drive the game forward. Everything has been fetch quests and field studies (field trips) whereby the students learn more about the cities surrounding their academy. These field studies are basically broken down into 3 quests- a fetch quest, a delivery quest, and a simple dungeon. After that, the students return to the academy.

There have been some very minor introductions to the political situation between the various countries, but the game is still grounded in school life activities, and getting to know your classmates. It is obvious that the Trails of Cold Steel is clearly paced for a trilogy, as everything in these first 15 hours has been character introductions and some simple exploration. Basically, nothing of substance has happened yet.

Combat is still superlative, and I'm enjoying all of the characters' personalities, but if you are the type of gamer that prefers a quick start to the conflict, you may want to steer clear of this one.

It's a 70+ hour game that really just sets up parts 2 and 3. So yes it is definitely a slow burn. Think of it more as a novel series instead of a 30 hour game with a beginning middle and end.
7  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Trails of Cold Steel Series on: December 21, 2016, 04:43:28 PM
One thing to keep in mind as you play is that your save carries over to part 2. So the relationships you build and the choices you make will have a direct impact on the 2nd game. Throughout the game you can pick and choose who you socialize with and towards the end I actually found myself debating which girls to interact with because I didn't want the other girls to react negatively. It probably sound silly but the game just sucked me into little things like that.

This is coming from someone who really hates the high school parts of the Persona series.

When one of you decides you want to part with Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steal 1  let me know.  I have a lot of stuff on my list to play so I wouldn't get to it quickly anyway - I can wait.

Not a problem. Really enjoying it so far, but I'm only a whopping 2 hours in. Considering the game is 50-80 hours long, we shall see if the honeymoon lasts.

+Excellent voiceovers
+Strong characterization
+Appears to have a mature plot
+Difficulty levels! (I wish every RPG did this. I'm playing on hard. There is also a nightmare level. I almost wiped twice in the first tutorial dungeon- a good thing in my book.)
+Interesting, complex, turn based battle system (there are about 20 status effects, plus chain effects, various elemental strengths/weaknesses, etc, etc)
+No random battles

-The graphics are...ugh...high end PS2
-Maybe not a negative for most, but the game starts out in a military school. As an anime fan, I'm fatigued on the high school setting. It does have a slight Persona vibe, but mostly from the social aspect- not actual combat.

I normally tire of games that are over 40 hours. But with Trails the story just keeps getting better at the 40 hour mark. It's not an in your face story either, in fact most of it is happening in the background and you get bits and pieces of it throughout the game, but it's never as simple as Bad Guy X is out to destroy the world. It's much deeper than that.

I copied and pasted this into it's own post so it doesn't take over the 2016 thread.

I would love to play this, but I'm not buying a Vita for one game.

It's on the PS3 as well, but I found the story-like nature of the game suited me better on the Vita where I could treat it like a book and play it in bed or on the couch while the kids watched the TV. My first play through took over 70 hours and I didn't even do all of the side quests. So it's definitely an investment in gaming time.

People compare it to the Persona games, but personally I like Trails of Cold Steel more than any Persona game I have ever played. It's less weird Japanese, and more focused on a somewhat realistic story.
13  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: What is your biggest surprises and disappointments of 2016? on: December 19, 2016, 04:41:57 PM
My biggest surprise was Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steal 1 on the Vita. I literally knew nothing about the game having bought it on a whim when it went on sale. It is easily my favorite JRPG that I have played in the past 5 years. The story is incredibly deep, it sets up each character with their own background and makes them all feel unique. It plays more like book 1 of a novel series that has a planned beginning, middle and end. With part 1 just containing the beginning of the story.

My biggest disappointment is the complete death of the Vita as a system. Other than the occasional good Japanese rpg port there really hasn't been any good games released on the system this year. Sony has all but abandoned it. I suspect that if it weren't for PS PLus Sony would bury it at this point.

It was a great season and the first one in  a long time that I can remember where there really weren't any bad guys in the final 8.

Watching the final tribal I thought Ken had some votes until Adam pulled out the cancer card. Once he did that it was all over.

I'll say this, going into the final 6 I really had no idea who would win, if I had to narrow it down to three I still would have had a hard time.

This describes the games fairly well, I would add that they are choose your own adventure style. Some of the choices you make throughout a game will drastically change the story.

As far as "how much game is there", It's not action heavy in terms of fighting, in fact all of the fighting is decision based or QTE (Which is very forgiving in terms of the speed required) there is no direct combat.

If you are looking at getting into them I would recommend pre-ordering the newest Walking Dead game on either Xbox Live or PSN. The pre-order comes with Season 2 of the Walking Dead and it comes with Michonne's spinoff series for free. So for $24 you get 3 complete games.

This season has been fantastic.  Last week's 2-hour episode was pretty epic, ending with stones being drawn.  I don't remember the last time that happened and it just seemed insane in this episode.

I can't say there's any one member I really love, but as a whole I like that just about everyone on the show is really playing.  Of course some harder than others but for the most part there are very few complete sheep.  I think they mentioned it on the show as well, it's almost like a cast of veterans.

I seem to recall early on Jeff making a comment about the final (?) having people you wouldn't have expected, so I'm guessing neurotic David and some form of his alliance ends up making it all the way.

At this point it's really hard to say who will be there in the end. I'm rooting for High school kid because he seems to be a real long shot at this point. David just annoys the hell out of me so I don't want it to be him. I doubt it's secretly gay secret cop dude, he has way too many secrets and they will eventually get out ruining any trust people have in him. Ken doll seems to be skating by at this point with no one really noticing how much of a threat he is. Annoying young Millenial dude has pissed too many people off. The neurotic frizzy haired girl also seems to be skating by.

My main problem with this, is that just like the WiiU, 3DS, DS, etc, the main "innovative" feature of the console doesn't really matter to me at all.

If Nintendo literally just put out an Xbox One with their games on it I would be just as happy to buy their new console.  Probably moreso since there wouldn't be any gimmicky bullshit that is only used for like 2 games.

The last time they put out a vanilla console was the Gamecube. And that didn't go so well for them. Although I did own one from launch and loved it.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel is a really great JRPG. Part 2 was just released and I haven't started it yet but the reviews say its even better. It's a real trilogy too with the second game starting right where part 1 ends.

Its on both the Vita and PS3 with cross save compatibility. Unfortunately its not cross buy.

In the PC world I like MMO's, RPG's, ARPG's...and good story driven adventure games.

I hate to break it to you but if you primarily like RPGs then you probably should have bought a PS4. Over the course of the console cycle the PS4 will have a ton more RPGs than the xbox. BUT with that said, the newest Forza game is supposed to be incredible. I'm having trouble thinking of any RPG or ARPG games on the Xbox that aren't also on the PC.

I've watched through episode 10 and Luke Cage is easily my least favorite Marvel series so far. The first 3 episodes started out strong and then it was like the story hit a brick wall. Something is just off for me. It doesn't help that Cage is so ridiculously over powered compared to the main bad guy. He could literally take the big bad down in about 15 minutes if he wanted to.

Spoiler for Hiden:
The bad guy complaint applies to both cotton mouth and diamond back, they are essentially the same character if you ask me, one just has some history with Luke and some better bullets.

I wonder if there are any theories that no one dies. There are several ways this could realistically happen. Sudden walker heard or maybe they somehow manage to get the upper hand. Who knows, but it's an acceptable outcome if you ask me. They somehow escape and the stage is then set for total war.

31  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PS4, XB1, PC] Assassin's Creed Syndicate on: September 02, 2016, 02:30:09 PM
I finally took the plunge on this one when it hit $20 on amazon and I'm glad I did. It's like they took Unity and fixed everything that was wrong with it (mind you I actually went back and finished Unity after it was all patched up). The setting is fantastic, the characters are the best ones in an AC game in a long time and the addition of the Zip Line makes the game so much easier to navigate.

The story is still nothing to write home about but my guess is that they used Syndicate as a starting point for the future story lines. There is a weird AI story that plays out in the present day, it's not too in depth, but they are setting something up.

Also, the game is relatively bug free, I did have a hard lock 1 time and a mission glitch that made me reload to the last checkpoint, but that's pretty much it. I'm playing it on the PS4.

Right now I'm on the last mission and I plan on playing it until I unlock the Platinum. Which is something I've never done with an AC game because I usually burn out before I get to that point.

I ended up getting the platinum a couple of days ago. If not for one trophy you could obtain the platinum without playing the included expansion. As it was I had to play through the roughly 4 hour expansion to get the last trophy to pop. The expansion is a real slog too, it just 4 more hours of the same bland game. I tried to get through it as fast as possible.

Now that Piranha Bytes has the Gothic property back I hope that they can do justice to the next Gothic game.

I remember looking at reviews for the PS4 version when it was last cheap on the store.  Despite liking the demo on PC way back in the day, I decided that the amount of new issues reportedly affecting the HD port were enough to walk away from it.  How bad has it been on a technical level?

It's playable, I've only had the game crash to the PS4 screen once during my 30 plus hours. Probably the wonkiest thing is the way they designed the playable area, it's designed to look like you can go everywhere, but you cant and if you try to jump to an area that you are not supposed to go to you will float around uncontrollably. Most of the time this results in you landing safely back on the ground but sometimes it results in death. This is usually avoidable by simply avoiding cliffs and rocks.

ON the plus side I haven't encountered any game breaking bugs yet.
38  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Arcania: Gothic 4 - expansion Fall of Setarrif out! on: July 11, 2016, 01:17:16 PM
Arise extremely old Ceekay thread.

So on a whim I bought the PS4 version (It was on sale). I absolutely loved Gothic 1 and 2 and the Risen series. Gothic 3 was a mess and I didn't even complete it. Part 4 is also a huge mess, but for some reason I have been compelled to platinum the game. I'm about 30 hours in and I'm real close to the end of the game and I really just want it to be over. Looking back at this thread not a lot has changed, it's still a buggy mess even on this "HD" re-release, it's still extremely linear, the combat is still really lacking and most of the stuff that made Gothic 1 and 2 great are missing. Also, the graphics are way below standard at this point. At best I would give the game a 40% and yet I still feel compelled to see it through to the end (or at least until the platinum trophy pops, which should happen prior to finishing the expansion).
