Story Path of Destiny was free a couple of months ago on PS Plus. It's a fun little action game that can be beaten in as little as 2 hours, but It's more likely to take you around 10. I really didn't know what to expect from the game but I enjoyed it for the brief time it takes to beat it.

I'd recommend this one as well.  The game is designed to be replayed multiple times to see the myriad endings, each one very different based on the choices you make at specific times during the game.  The story is fantastic, and the twists and turns based on your decisions means the short game (each playthrough takes 60-90 minutes) will never be the same twice.   I beat it 8 times (I think) before moving on to something else.

Was a fantastic surprise, and I'd definitely recommend giving it a look.

Yeah I guess what I meant by beating the game was getting the ending that was actually considered a "good " ending. Meaning the main character actually accomplished what he set out to do. I think it took me 6 or 7 tries to get it.

4  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Horizon Zero Dawn on: April 04, 2017, 02:43:40 PM
I must be the odd man out on this one because I'm having a really hard time getting into this game. There are several things that bother me about the game. The biggest issue for me is that the lighting is really dark. It seems like it's nighttime way more than day and the game is really hard to see. I thought it may be my gamma settings but I've adjusted them and its not that. Adding to that problem is the horrendous HUD. There are so many things on the HUD and it takes up so much space that it distracts me from the actual game. It shouldn't be a chore to be able to see things in the environment and it is.

The story really isn't grabbing me either. I'm at level 14 I made it out to find the War Chief and helped her kill the attackers so I know I'm early in the  game, but I really hope it grabs me more.

The sense of open world exploration is non existent for me. I go from one quest marker to the next, there really isn't any incentive to explore. Add to that the collectibles map and I end up going from one collectible to the next without even really looking for them.

Overall though I think my biggest problem with the game is that I went from Zelda directly into Horizon. For me Zelda is an absolute 10 whereas Horizon is an 8 at best. That's just my opinion, but I do think it is contributing to me not liking Horizon as much. I might even shelve the game for now and play a different genre and then come back to it later.

I'm gonna call it right now Breath of the Wild will win Game of the Year from nearly every publisher out there. I know it's early in the year and no I haven't played Horizon, Nier, Resident Evil 7 or Nioh, but I really don't see any other game coming close. I expect Mass Effect to be great but even if it's as good as part 2 it still won't beat Zelda.

Having played both, I think Horizon is a far superior open world game in nearly every respect.  Zelda seems flat-out boring in comparison.  I played the first 8 hours of Zelda and came away mostly 'meh', but can't put Horizon down after nearly 20 hours.

Note that this is coming from someone who has no nostalgia for Zelda, so YMMV.

I'm the opposite. I played Zelda before Horizon and now that I'm playing Horizon I find Horizon to be very limited in scope. The fighting doesn't feel as good to me, there is way less freedom of movement and the sense if exploration isn't even close to Zelda.

Not that Horizon is bad, the story is certainly better and the graphics are miles ahead of Zelda. I just had more fun with Zelda. Granted I'm only about 6 hours into Horizon so I could change my mind.

Yeah, I have ragequit a number of JRPGs even like 90% into the game due to it. I still like them, but that can drive me nuts, along with mad requirements to grind.

I rage quit with the last bosses on Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy XIII 2. But I don't remember the boss battle in Trails that he's talking about so I must have beaten it on the first try. All I can say is that sucks, but the last chapter is by far the best chapter and it's totally worth giving it another shot.

I've had the Switch since launch so I'm reporting in.    I can say without reservation that I love this console.  I haven't had any of the hardware issues that others have, so take that in mind.

Why do I love it?    It is the perfect size to toss into my bag (in a case) and sneak in some Zelda (and soon Mario Kart) time when on lunch, waiting for my kid to come out to the car from school, etc.   It's also fantastic for late at night when I get tired of sitting up and want to go get in bed next to my snoozing wife and get another 15 minutes or so of Nintendo gameplay in.     Being able to just stand up, grab the console, and go to bed is amazing.

Loving it so far.

Ditto. It literally has been the most used console during it's first two weeks of release that I have ever owned. The reason is simple, when I'm at home I can play on the TV, but when I have to leave my couch I can take it with me. And it couldn't get any easier to switch it to portable and back to TV. On top of that my kids usually play it in portable mode while my wife and I are watching TV. Between myself and two of my kids the console has hardly seen any downtime.

Of course it helps that Zelda is so awesome.
9  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - Release date 3/3/2017 on: March 08, 2017, 03:38:27 PM
This game is MASSIVE. I love scaling the towers and then looking out into the distance, it really lets you know just how big the game is. Just this morning I climbed the desert tower and looked north to see the entire Grand Plateau in front of me taking up just a little over half the screen. The Grand Plateau itself seems huge when you are in that area, but on top of that tower it seems tiny. The sense of exploration is unlike any other game I have played. That includes other massive games like Witcher 3, Farcry 2,3, Primal, Just Cause, GTA, etc.

The fact that you can literally climb anything and reach any area in the game adds so many possibilities.

Yeah that deer was painfully fake. I can understand a CGI Tiger, I'm ok with that. But a deer? How hard can it be to rent a deer for the day? I imagine it would have been way cheaper than that CGI mess that they went with.

Despite having zero anticipation (I've never cared for 3D Zelda), I'm really enjoying this one.  Playing on the Switch by the way.  Initially I was getting some pretty bad frame drops but a pretty large patch came out on the second day and seems to have fixed most of those issue.  I've been getting a kick out of charging enemies with a spear while riding my horse.  The combat system in general is more advanced than I was expecting, so high marks for that.  All in all, pretty impressed.

I think the patch really stabilized the frame rate. I've seen some of the pre launch videos showing the game coming to a standstill and I have never had that happen after several hours of gameplay. So the biggest complaint from most reviews seems to have been fixed. Granted the frame rate will drop at times, but it's never so bad that the game turns into a slide show.

The only other real complaint I see that's left is the constant weapon breaking which I supposed could be adjusted through a patch as well.

I'm thinking about getting a USB-C to Micro USB adapter so that I can use my portable cell phone charger to extend the Switch's battery life. So far, I haven't run into any problems with the battery, but I've only been playing Shovel Knight: Specter of Torment.

I bought a cable on amazon for $6 and it works perfectly in my droid turbo phone charger.

Dang, I really don't want to just be Mr Negative here, I love Nintendo and want this to succeed.

The lack of the Virtual console at launch is a YUUGE blunder. In the absence of new games to play they could have at least given us hundreds of old games through the virtual console. I know I would love to buy Super Metroid, Paper Mario, Mario Cart 64, etc. for the hand held functionality alone.

Also lots of press that got hardware for reviews coming out saying that the joy cons (or specifically the left one only?) have troubles keeping a clean signal going with any kind of interference, including your body.  That's a really bummer, as it may be something that can't even be fixed by a firmware update?

I would say "hopefully Nintendo comes out and addresses that", but talking publicly about those sorts of things is not really their style.

That seems like a really big mistake if it is hardware related. I have a hard time believing that they didn't catch something like that in testing. Which makes me be hopeful that it's just a case by case defective controller issue.

Oh boy...   retard  Not that it really surprises me, but to have one at launch that can't even fit on there is just really sad.

32GB is just such a small drive, it is hard to believe they would choose that, but of course Nintendo has always seemed a bit short-sighted on what other companies might want or require.

My guess is they went small on the internal HD because they used MicroSD cards for the expansion slot. MicroSD is so cheap that they figure everyone will upgrade on their own and get the size that they want. Thus saving Nintendo money by not including a large HD.

They could have really screwed us by including a small internal HD and then using a proprietary expansion memory type like Sony did with the Vita.

are all eventual buys for me.

Zelda is easily #1

Then in no particular order:

God of War
Horizon Zero dawn
Resident Evil 7
Trails of Cold Steel 2 (I haven't gotten around to it yet)
Trails of Cold Steel 3
The new Mario game on Christmas day

I put a pre-order in on Amazon.

I skipped the WiiU and that's the first Nintendo console that I have not owned. So the Switch will be a welcome return to Nintendo for me.

I love the fact that the memory is MicroSD and not proprietary. I also like the idea of the docking station with a portable unit. Not sure how much I will actually use it in portable mode, but I'm guessing my kids will play the heck out of it that way when I'm watching TV.

I hope they make some of the WiiU games available for this via download. Specifically Wind Waker HD and the Mario action games.

I also hope that Nintendo introduces some kind of Trophy/Achievement system. Being a competitionist junkie I really want that feature.

HAs anyone figured out a good place to pre-order the Switch online?

By the way, if you don't have a PS3 or PS Vita (Gratch), this game is apparently compatible with the PS Vita TV thing. So you could buy the PS Vita version and play it on that (if you had a dual shock lying around. So a $45 investment rather than whatever a ps3 or PS Vita cost.

PSNow is also an option. If you have a PS4 this is definitely the cheapest option if you can beat the game within 3 months.

I'm about 14-15 hours into the game now. I'm still enjoying it, but the game is a very slow burn. I have yet to be introduced to the game's main antogonist, or the thematic conflict that will drive the game forward. Everything has been fetch quests and field studies (field trips) whereby the students learn more about the cities surrounding their academy. These field studies are basically broken down into 3 quests- a fetch quest, a delivery quest, and a simple dungeon. After that, the students return to the academy.

There have been some very minor introductions to the political situation between the various countries, but the game is still grounded in school life activities, and getting to know your classmates. It is obvious that the Trails of Cold Steel is clearly paced for a trilogy, as everything in these first 15 hours has been character introductions and some simple exploration. Basically, nothing of substance has happened yet.

Combat is still superlative, and I'm enjoying all of the characters' personalities, but if you are the type of gamer that prefers a quick start to the conflict, you may want to steer clear of this one.

It's a 70+ hour game that really just sets up parts 2 and 3. So yes it is definitely a slow burn. Think of it more as a novel series instead of a 30 hour game with a beginning middle and end.
32  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Trails of Cold Steel Series on: December 21, 2016, 04:43:28 PM
One thing to keep in mind as you play is that your save carries over to part 2. So the relationships you build and the choices you make will have a direct impact on the 2nd game. Throughout the game you can pick and choose who you socialize with and towards the end I actually found myself debating which girls to interact with because I didn't want the other girls to react negatively. It probably sound silly but the game just sucked me into little things like that.

This is coming from someone who really hates the high school parts of the Persona series.

Not a problem. Really enjoying it so far, but I'm only a whopping 2 hours in. Considering the game is 50-80 hours long, we shall see if the honeymoon lasts.

+Excellent voiceovers
+Strong characterization
+Appears to have a mature plot
+Difficulty levels! (I wish every RPG did this. I'm playing on hard. There is also a nightmare level. I almost wiped twice in the first tutorial dungeon- a good thing in my book.)
+Interesting, complex, turn based battle system (there are about 20 status effects, plus chain effects, various elemental strengths/weaknesses, etc, etc)
+No random battles

-The graphics are...ugh...high end PS2
-Maybe not a negative for most, but the game starts out in a military school. As an anime fan, I'm fatigued on the high school setting. It does have a slight Persona vibe, but mostly from the social aspect- not actual combat.

I normally tire of games that are over 40 hours. But with Trails the story just keeps getting better at the 40 hour mark. It's not an in your face story either, in fact most of it is happening in the background and you get bits and pieces of it throughout the game, but it's never as simple as Bad Guy X is out to destroy the world. It's much deeper than that.

I copied and pasted this into it's own post so it doesn't take over the 2016 thread.

I would love to play this, but I'm not buying a Vita for one game.

It's on the PS3 as well, but I found the story-like nature of the game suited me better on the Vita where I could treat it like a book and play it in bed or on the couch while the kids watched the TV. My first play through took over 70 hours and I didn't even do all of the side quests. So it's definitely an investment in gaming time.

People compare it to the Persona games, but personally I like Trails of Cold Steel more than any Persona game I have ever played. It's less weird Japanese, and more focused on a somewhat realistic story.

My biggest surprise was Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steal 1 on the Vita. I literally knew nothing about the game having bought it on a whim when it went on sale. It is easily my favorite JRPG that I have played in the past 5 years. The story is incredibly deep, it sets up each character with their own background and makes them all feel unique. It plays more like book 1 of a novel series that has a planned beginning, middle and end. With part 1 just containing the beginning of the story.

My biggest disappointment is the complete death of the Vita as a system. Other than the occasional good Japanese rpg port there really hasn't been any good games released on the system this year. Sony has all but abandoned it. I suspect that if it weren't for PS PLus Sony would bury it at this point.

I'll say this, going into the final 6 I really had no idea who would win, if I had to narrow it down to three I still would have had a hard time.
