'm on chapter 15 and this game has exceeded all expectations.
I'm on chapter 15 as well, and really loving the game.  I still think Fallout is my game of the year so far, but Valkria is a close second.
2  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [iPhone] Tap Defense ... a must-buy free game. on: December 22, 2008, 11:54:11 PM
How much does Field Runners cost?
I think its $5.  Unfortunately I played Field Runners first, so I can't get into Tap Defense.  Field Runners really is a lot better, at least to me.

At least one Manning is still in it!!!  The older Manning didn't look that impressive today.

I like this article on the Pats:

sounds like the powers behind HD-DVD are quickly realizing how bad this is for their cause...
Oooph.  If CES press conferences trumping HD-DVD are really cancelled, then the format war is over.  I'm glad my PS3 will actually be relevant for the next 5-10 years smile.

Either way, I just want a winner, though it may be to late.
5  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: So, what did you get for Christmas? on: January 02, 2008, 03:00:06 AM
Er, that's a Tele, not a Strat.
Bad picture, but mine is definitely a strat.   I looked for a few minutes for the sunburst pattern, and that's the photo I found.  Fingers are pretty sore at the moment while breaking myself in.
6  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: So, what did you get for Christmas? on: December 28, 2007, 01:03:38 AM
I got a Fender Stratocaster, a Vox amp, and other misc guitar stuff.  I also am getting lessons w/ my kids.  I've wanted to try for years, and Guitar Hero finally pushed me over the edge, especially because of my kids interest in it too.

7  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Joining the 360 Sucks Crowd... on: December 27, 2007, 03:56:02 AM
Well, it turned out not to matter. I turned on the 360 tonight and got those lovely three red lights. Now, I've got a bunch of Christmas presents for the kids which will go unplayed until Microsoft gets around to shipping back the refurb. Plus, I finally had some time off next week and was looking forward to getting caught up on a couple of games. The timing couldn't be worse.
Sorry to hear that.  Mine's on the way to Microsoft, but I'm enjoying Rock Band on my brothers for the rest of vacation.  I'm amazed at how differently my brothers 'fixed' 360 sounds then mine did.  The fans sound a lot different.

On a positive note, Rock Band is a lot of fun.  My wife is enjoying the singing, the first video game I've gotten her into in a long, long time.  My 7 year old is enjoying the guitar and singing as well.  We've all decided the drums are a pain at the moment though.  My calf is sore, and I really hate moving them around, especially w/ the wires.  The wired Fender controller also stays put away unless two of us are playing guitars at the same time.  Wires really suck slywink.
8  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Joining the 360 Sucks Crowd... on: December 17, 2007, 05:02:44 AM
I have to go without it for a few weeks, but that's totally fine.  I might be more annoyed about it if the 360 was my only gaming outlet, and I had no other hobbies, but I have plenty of other options.
I'm mostly annoyed that after not playing the 360 that much, the one time I really want to have it, at XMas for RockBand, it dies.

I will be borrowing my brother's for XMas day though.  I'll have the Partridge family going on in my house!
9  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Digital Photo Frames? on: December 14, 2007, 01:54:11 AM
We have the 8 inch Kodak and it is perfect.  The contrast ratio is just right.
That's interesting, as I've always been least impressed w/ the Kodak's.  They just didn't seem to have the smoothest effects or displays.  I've wanted a frame for a while though.  I'll have to check out the Kodak's again, as I at least recognize the brand smile.

Rented it tonight and upon initial viewing I think it's the weakest of the three.
Watched it again via rental and loved it.  I'm not sure which of the series is my favorite.

Nothing will happen as a result of this, so who cares?  Lots of wind and noise will be generated, but no changes will come.  Clemens and Bonds will make the Hall of Fame, and live will go on.  This list isn't even comprehensive, only accounts that linked a few people.  I'd rather see a list of clean baseball players, it'd be much smaller.

I like football better.  Now that Rodney Harrison isn't taking HGH, I'm sure the rest of the league is clean  icon_twisted.

I thought Simmons' idea as better:  Belichick should place the punter inactive for the game.  Biggest mindfuck in NFL history.  "Hey Mangini - we don't intend on punting today, KTHX."
Didn't see that, pretty funny.

I'll be rooting for the Bills.  I like Edwards and Jauron.
13  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Joining the 360 Sucks Crowd... on: December 14, 2007, 01:41:42 AM
If you had have bought Rock Band for the PS3 like you should have then none of this would have happened

PS3 version still have all the same downloadable songs, and get them as quickly? smile   I probably won't, as I have the GH3 controller for the 360, and really wanted to use both on the game to play w/ my son.  Having to wait to play though, really sucks.  A whole week of good clean family gaming gone to waste now!

Are the XBox Live accounts tied to the XBox, or can I use my hard drive with an XBox that I can borrow from my brother?  He has a 3 month old, so doesn't play much now anyway smile
14  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Joining the 360 Sucks Crowd... on: December 14, 2007, 12:52:32 AM
I'm blowing off a little steam, but I'm joining the 360 haters.  Of all the times for my 360 to melt down, is right before XMas.  I have Rock Band sitting in the closet waiting for XMas to play with my family on the 25th, and the rest of our vacation.  That won't happen now.  Oh, and apparently Microsoft is updating their systems, so I can't file any repair order.  Lovely.

I've enjoyed the 360, but the hardware is a ridiculous joke.  Even when it worked, its loud and obnoxious.

Thank god for my PS3.  If EB will exchange Rock Band for the PS3 version, I'll be in luck, as that and the rest of the cross platform purchases will be Sony now.

Does anyone still have their original 360 for more then a year?  I was the last person I know of that still had an original 360 in working condition...

Amusing comment from ESPN on the Jets/Pats game:
Here's what Bill Belichick should do when he meets Eric Mangini at midfield following the Pats' 58-3 win Sunday: Hand Mangini a camcorder and say, "I don't know what I was thinking stealing your crappy team's signs. But feel free to tape ours."
16  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Mass Effect Impressions: Release Day Edition on: November 28, 2007, 11:11:15 PM
Yeah Depward was telling me the same thing and I just don't get it. Sure, the models aren't as nice as AC, nor are the animations as good as Uncharted, but overall the graphics are simply fantastic.
Fantastic how?  The faces are pretty good, and the people when they are in their little talking modes or triangles, but otherwise?  Are you talking about all the lovely square rooms with 5-10 people in them?  A few potted trees or crates?  I don't see it.  It looks like a higher resolution KOTOR to me.  I've also seen some texture flickering issues as well.

Compared to other games out now, like CoD4, AC, Drake's, Ratchet and Clank, Crysis, and Bioshock; the graphics on Mass Effect are pretty unspectacular.  I'd consider Mass Effect to have really good graphics, if it was released last year.  Load times are also horrible while loading these graphics (damn elevators!)

But I have to say I really like the space operish old timey music.  Seems fitting to me, but that  is surely a personal preference kind of thing.
I kind of like the music now.  Its like an old Battlestar Galactica episode smile.

After all my complaints, I'm kind of liking the game.  I think KOTOR was better, mainly because it had lightsabers, and the decisions in that game seemed to have more impact, at least for me so far.  All the talking doesn't seem to amount to anything *yet*.

So far its an 8/10 for me, and growing as I forgive the graphics.

17  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [NFL] Sean Taylor died from gunshot wound on: November 27, 2007, 09:13:05 PM
Apparently Taylor was 'growing up' this year as well after the birth of his child, as opposed to the player that off the field incidents in the past.  I feel badly for his child, who won't really get to know Taylor.
18  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Mass Effect Impressions: Release Day Edition on: November 27, 2007, 09:00:18 PM
I started playing last night, and so far I think its 'craptacular'.  Framerate issues galore, 360 thrashing, average graphics, and what sounds like 70s music playing during battles.  Still, it looks fun, but what a letdown from what I thought it'd be after all the hype.  The framerate issues are ridiculous for a game of this to have, especially considering the average graphics.

I'm also playing Assasin's Creed which may be influencing my decision, but AC has incredibly beautiful environments w/ a lot more going on, great animations, no XBox thrashing, or even frame rate problems.  Bioware really needs to hire some better programmers.
19  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [X-Box 360] Some game impressions on: November 26, 2007, 02:12:16 AM
It's still a good game, but the combat, stupid AI, and other things were overlooked by myself and many others since it was one of the first to bring us graphics of that level without a super powerful PC.
I really enjoyed the combat, in particular the 'cover' system.  The cover system was very well implemented, and makes sense in a combat situation.  I have a hard time playing other games like CoD4 w/out cover.  Soldiers should always be using cover, and after Gears, its really missed by me in other shooters.
20  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Assassin's Creed Reviews on: November 26, 2007, 02:04:07 AM
I'm three assasinations in, and I'm mixed.  The graphics and atmosphere are incredible when you play Altiar (spelling?).  I love the cities, running on the beams, scaling walls, etc.  The fights are also amusing, especially the counters.  At times, as mentioned above, you feel incredibly powerful.

My complaint though, is that its the fourth mission of exactly the same stuff coming up.  I'm not as excited to go back to another city to do the exact same things, again.  Have I seen it all?  Why should I keep playing?  One reason would be the story, but so far I'm not that interested.

I've found the controls at times to be incredibly cool, and incredibly clunky, depending on what I was trying to climb or do smile.  The animations are great, though not nearly as smooth as I remember from the PS3 Drake demo, but still AC has some of the best animations ever.

While not all the teams are great teams, I think that beating the Chargers, Redskins, Giants, Broncos, and Chiefs were good wins to show their strength.
All those teams are pretty mediocre though.  The Giants are good, but didn't they beat the Giants at the beginning of the season when the Giants were having problems?  It seems pretty hard to get a read on the Packers.  I'm looking to the Dallas vs Green Bay game.  I'd love to see Green Bay take down Dallas and wipe those smiles from TO and Romo slywink.

We can't all be Patriot fans.
But they are fun to watch ;-).  I loved watching the 49ers w/ Montana and Young, and then the Rams w/ Warner.  Even that Manning character is enjoyable to watch when he gets going.
22  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Crysis [Impression Thread] on: November 17, 2007, 05:41:51 AM
I'm a little ways in, and I'm loving the game.  I'm playing on the 'high' setting, and sometimes the graphics look so good I could believe I'm looking through a window.  The game play is very good as well, almost feeling like a more realistic Halo w/ the easy grenade and melee attacks.  Probably my game of the year so far.
23  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Manning on: November 17, 2007, 05:38:58 AM
Don't we have a weekly NFL thread?
Yes, but we need far more sports threads!  And the train wreck of a game that was Indy - SD really needed its own thread.
24  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: NFL Week 11 on: November 17, 2007, 05:28:08 AM
What you are describing is parity.  The NFL has had parity ever since free agency came about.  It's nothing new.  It's just that the Browns and Lions have been replaced by the Dolphins and Rams in the "Really Bad Teams" category.
I think this is part of it, but not all of it.  Can you ever remember so many bad QBs in the league lately, or so many teams having so many QB problems?

Here's a little sample:

We can beat around the bush all we want, but Kitna really isn't a good QB, nor are most of the other QBs in the league.  One of the best is saddled with a horrible defense (Palmer).  I just think QB play in general is pretty inconsistent this year.  How long did it take the Redskins to throw a TD to a WR?  Have they yet?
25  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: NFL Week 11 on: November 17, 2007, 04:50:41 AM
It's weird how all these teams that have been awful the past few seasons are actually doing well, i.e. Browns and Lions...
I think it says more about the state of football then the Browns or Lions being good.  There are just a ton of mediocre and bad teams around.  I think 2/3rds of the league has been rotating QBs.  The supposedly good teams like the Lions have already lost by 30 one game to an even worse team (Philly).  How many first downs did the Browns get against the Steelers in the second half?

Even the supposed very good Chargers barely could beat an injured depleted Colts team with Manning having one of his worst days ever.

There are what, 5 good teams in the league?  The rest are extremely flawed, average teams, that beat other flawed teams.  Its kind of sad.  Look at the Panthers.  They have Testeverde starting!

Maybe its just the QBs that suck this year.

26  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Mass Effect Impressions on: November 15, 2007, 07:27:46 PM
Well said Kevin, my thoughts as well. The weaknesses in the combat that Mikeg and others have described remind me very much of KOTOR; a Bioware game I loved. The combat shortcomings in that game could be easily overcome if you're willing to learn the art of pausing and assigning orders, and from what I've read in this thread the same seems to be case for ME. To this day, KOTOR is still 1 of my all time favorite games.
The only thing I've read that disappoints me a little is the length of the game. It sounds like this game is more along the lines of Jade Empire's 20-30 hours as opposed to KOTOR's 40-60. That being said, 20-30 hours is still a lot longer than 90% of what's currently on the market.
It looks like Mass Effect is a lot more action orientated though.  KOTOR's combat at a certain point was pretty dull, and easy, but the combat basically ran itself.  In KOTOR, you ran into some enemies and your characters would spin a few times, and the fight was over.  This happened through most of the game.

Mass Effect's battles look more like a shooter, and much more horizontally stretched out.  It seems like Mass will play more like a boring shooter, where you really have to pay attention for all those dull fights.  KOTOR never made you do this.

I hope I'm wrong...
27  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Call of Duty 4 Impressions on: November 15, 2007, 02:22:43 PM
Multiplayer must be great, because the single player mode isn't so hot.  I'm about 2 hours in (about halfway I guess), and CoD4 feels like CoD2 w/ night vision goggles.  CoD4 screams for a good cover mode!  With a fun cover mode, the game would be great.  Otherwise, it feels very dated to me.  Right now, I'd put the presentation for single player at 10/10, but the gameplay at 6/10.
28  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Stop wasting time with games son! on: November 14, 2007, 09:06:16 PM
No kidding. Isn't Halo3 an M-rated title?
As parents you need to make judgement calls.  Is Halo worth an M rating?  I personally don't think its anywhere close.  Gears of War is an M game, as is the GTA games, and many others.  I'm not sure why Halo got an M, while games like Call of Duty 2 and 3 got 'T' ratings.   Halo is also very sci-fi.  I don't think many kids will find energy swords around to use, no matter what the age slywink.

That's nuts.  Some people prefer to be their kid's friends rather than their parents.
I think parents should play the games w/ the kids to determine what is appropriate, and be guided by ratings, but make up their own minds.

Another person agrees with me: and

Though, like the people in the article, people rush to judgement based on little information...

I was goofin'.

Guess I was alone.
Apparently you know nothing about football.  It is crazy talk to comment on Manning throwing 6 picks in one game!  I was just amused that he was struggling so much, and more importantly, that the Chargers could barely do anything about it!  Has their been a worse coaching hire (Turner) ever?
30  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Stop wasting time with games son! on: November 13, 2007, 01:35:16 AM;_ylt=Aq6AKDby_l3qoJJl.XehCDoF1vAI

Saw that at EvilAvatar.  I'm finding that games without coop play really don't interest me as much because I enjoy playing with my kids so much.  Ratchet is a fun game, but I hate that my two boys and I all play it basically alone.  I can't wait for Rock Band.  My 4 year old will be on the drums (he did really well at Best Buy), with my 7 year old and me on guitars, and my wife on vocals!

I'm amazed though that more parents don't get involved with their kids.  Who cares if its video games, sports, dancing, etc.  You had kids, do stuff with them!

Not the best shooting mechanic, and I often die trying to zero in on guys, but it is passable for an rpg.

36  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Manning on: November 12, 2007, 03:52:57 AM
The biggest question on Manning, at least for me, was what could he do w/out Harrison.  We're getting to see how well Manning does w/out his favorite superstar WR.

Colts are closing the gap, as SD self-destructs.  I still can't believe the Chargers hired Norv! smile

Colts won't lose tonight, or again, until they play the Pats in the playoffs.  Then it'll be interesting to see who wins that game.

37  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Manning on: November 12, 2007, 03:35:30 AM
Looks like Peyton is having a tough night without his all-pro WRs.  He should call Brady and get some advice what its like to play with WRs off the street, like Brady has had most of his career.  5 ints so far, that's a pretty rough night for the best QB of all time smile.

After that sarcastic comment, I'm still amazed that a Norv Turner team is actually beating a well coached team like the Colts!  I still don't believe the Chargers will win, but at least its more fun to watch then what I thought would happen (Colts walking to an easy win...)
38  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PS3]Uncharted:Drakes Fortune on: November 09, 2007, 04:57:45 PM
Aside from the graphics and the voice acting, this game felt very cookie cutter to me.
Couldn't you say that about the new Ratchet and Clank, CoD4, GH 3, and any number of other games out there?  I guess I'm a bit jaded, but I'm not sure how many of the games coming out really have *new* ideas.
39  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PS3]Uncharted:Drakes Fortune on: November 09, 2007, 02:59:56 PM

40  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PS3]Uncharted:Drakes Fortune on: November 09, 2007, 04:45:36 AM
You have one setting for camera and one for aiming.
I'm not sure I understand.  You can move the camera around like any other 3d game I believe.  I think you can even shoot from that mode, though not sure how accurately.  The gun mode is more deliberate, but you can look over either shoulder for easy viewing.  Most gun battles probably will be fought strategically using cover though, which I like.  I liked how I could move forward from cover point to cover point, and then beat down who was ever left by vaulting over the last cover spots.

The alternative is Tomb Raiders lock on combat (does Drake have this and I missed it?)  I'm not sure the lock on mode is any better.  I really like the cover aspect in games these days personally, ever since Gears.

still not sold on the lead - i realize they were going for an 'everyman'-type character, but he's almost too everyman: while i can imagine the guy working as a programmer for naughty dog, having him running around the jungle blowing people's brains out just don't feel quite right (yet). that said, his asides are funny/appropriate enough...
The lead has always been my biggest problem too.  But then, who is his competition?  It'd be cooler w/ Indiana Jones sure.   Lara Croft certainly is more amusing to look at it, but they didn't have the license.   After the demo, I'll give this guy a chance.  Maybe he could be the next videogame Indy type char.
