41  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Biggest surprise hit/disapointment of the year 2011 on: November 27, 2011, 06:45:50 AM
Rage was my biggest disappointment.  I expected more growth from Id.

Deus Ex HR was my biggest surprise.   I had no real interest in it until the buzz before release convinced me to give it a shot.  While not a perfect game, they really did a nice job living up to the franchise standards with that game.

I fixed my crashes by dropping down to High graphics setting even though my PC can easily handle Ultra.  At least I am able to play now.  I was on the verge of dumping the game even though I was loving it prior to the crashes starting.

That's interesting.  I've been playing on "High" all along and have had only one crash.  And I'm pretty sure that was Steam's fault because it was the other day when they announced they were doing some maintenanc but claimed it wouldn't impact people playing.  But as soon as I crashed, Steam wouldn't let me back in for a few minutes.  Have had no other issue since.

Meanwhile, I tried Ultra settings yesterday and saw major stuttering when I would load into outside areas.  It would go away, but it takes long enough that it isn't worth it to me.

And I've done enough stuff in Solitude that all I need to become a thane is buy the house.  I'm not 100% sure what Razgon is referring to there.

Steam is the best digital download service UNLESS you ever run into an issue that needs support, such as yours.

I agree that Steam has an issue with providing support, but he got a response, so I wouldn't say that's the issue here.  He just doesn't like the answer he got.  If you meant to say that Steam has an issue with customer service, then I also agree, and that is perhaps what is lacking here.  But that's not a surprise as Steam is widely known for being stingy on refunds.  For example, with the recent super buggy release of Sword of the Stars 2 there were plenty of people who felt there was no point in even asking for a refund because Steam so rarely gives them.
44  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Steam Downloads- Is this Accurate? Could use some advice... on: November 25, 2011, 09:14:01 AM
The "right" or "wrong" of it aside, this is pretty much how all Steam sales work.  They have sales where a whole bunch of stuff is on sale for several days, then daily deals where the discounts on some stuff is steeper but only if you buy during that day.  Thats why during the sales most people focus on the "daily deals" and then at the end buy the stuff that never went for a lower price.

I guess I'm surprised you didn't realize that if you've been buying Steam games for so long.  And its not like its all that much different then what normal retailers have always done.  If you go to Walmart tonight you can get Battlefield 3 for $28, but only if you buy today.   You are likely not going to have any luck asking for a refund of the difference on a copy you bought yesterday.

I am pretty sure quest items do not count against carry weight. I know the 25 pound dragonstone didn't.

I will have to check that(drop everything i can and see if i have any weight),but other than that, why would they have a weight in the first place?

Speaking of this, I have dragon bones and dragon scales that are taking up tons of room.  I have no home and no place to put them.  Can I sell these now and still get stuff to make armor with later?

yeah,Dragons are plentiful in the game and you don't need that many to make an armour set,but the Dragon Armour does sell for a pretty penny,so it may be wise to make lots of Dragon Armour and sell it on later in the game

What did you guys do with all the bones and scales you were stockpiling as you leveled?  That shizz is heavy!

I bought a house in Whiterun pretty early on, so I think I only carried around bones and scales of one dragon.  Or more accurately, my housetharl carried them around.  icon_lol

Selling loot.  I've found that clearing out bandit infestations is pretty profitable once you have a companion to help haul out the loot.  And there are plenty of bandit bases around.
47  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - Impressions, tweaks and more! on: November 15, 2011, 06:20:47 PM
I fought my first giant last night.  The first time I tried to use my shout on it after it took out my companion and a nearby NPC, but soon was flying into the sky.  The second time I stayed back and pelted it with arrows while the others fought it.  It helped that the NPC was a mage.  After looting the body, I saw some other bodies nearby and looted them, but the mage NPC didn't like me looting one of the bodies and I had to pay her 75gp to avoid a fight.  I still came out ahead, though.

The only thing was that when I talked to the NPC mage and took a quest she referred to the dead NPC as if they were alive.   I think the dynamic world is pretty cool, but at the same time there are little gaffes like that where NPCs don't always acknowledge the situation correctly.

48  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Target Employees Protesting Thanksgiving Hours on: November 15, 2011, 04:46:05 AM
I've been working part-time for Walmart for a few years now.  The first year I was there was the first year that store had been open on Thanksgiving at all, and they were pretty nice about it.  The hours were 7-5 that day and they basically asked people to volunteer.  Since I had just started and had no plans anyway, I worked that day.  The store opened at 5AM the next day for the big sales.

But that year a part-time employee was killed at a Walmart in New York state when the crowd rushed the doors at 5AM.  You may remember it, it got a lot of coverage since there was footage of people continuing to shop and come in and out while people tried to help him.  After that Walmart hired some company to advise them on how to avoid that in the future and the recommendation was to end the "one big sale at one specific time" approach.

Ever since the Walmart I'm at (normally not a 24 hour store) does not close on Thanksgiving night at all and just stays open.  So people line up in the store.  And they stagger the sales and post the times in their flyers so people who want some TV aren't rushing the store at the same time as some other big item.  This year the first sale starts at 10pm Thanksgiving night.  I work 3pm to midnight on Thanksgiving day.

The only good thing is that by having all the big sales staggered over the night, the next day is actually pretty quiet now other then dealing with the one thing about "Black Friday" I've never understood - it's absolutely crazy how many people line up for those overnight and big sales and end up returning stuff the same day.  It usually takes us a couple of days in my department alone to work through all the returns, and that always included high demand items that we could sell if we could get them back onto the shelf.

That weekend is probably the worst part of working retail.  And its all the fault of customers, who clearly don't give a shit about making retail workers work holidays if it makes the sales more convenient for them.

You need to be a higher level to beat that mob, but the good news is that you don't have to.  Just run/sprint past and he won't follow that far.  It's very easy if you have a horse.  Then you fast travel on the way back.

Definately noticing the quiet sound.  In game is at max, windows desktop is at 75, and speakers are at 50%.   For most games that combo would be too loud.  Here I keep turning up the speakers.

Not to mention that this one takes place 200 years after the last (the previous games were all within the lifetime of a particular NPC IIRC), so there is no realy carryover assumed.  Totally different situation even for longtime fans, different game mechanics in many ways as well.

I'm about 8 hours into the game so far and loving it. The texture issues still annoy me once in a while, but otherwise the game looks incredible and the shooting is very satisfying. The weapons have a good weight to them, the sound effects are appropriate, and the animations of the enemies make shooting them down very satisfying. The world is very attractive, id did a great job of nailing that Mad Max post-apocalyptic setting and I'm soaking every moment of it in. The mix of personalities are interesting and fun to interact with. Plus, I find myself enjoying the driving portion of the game much more than I thought I would. I'm having fun upgrading the dune buggy and participating in races and Fed Ex missions.

This game doesn't push any gameplay boundaries, that's for sure, but it's a highly polished FPS with a wealth of personality. I haven't even gotten into the card game stuff, which I've heard is quite fun.

Makes me sad that the multiplayer didn't pan out.

Wait until you get to the end before making a judgement about the single player.  The game has its moments, to be sure, but the latter part of it is just not what it should have been.  And I'm not even talking about the final level.

Something to ponder:

If Bethesda hadn't gone fancy with the 11-11-11 release date this week we could be playing by now.

Fucking Bruges CeeKay Bethesda.

I don't know why you think that.  Big games (and big movies - such as the new Harry Potter coming 11-11 as well) get moved to other release days this time of year.  That way you don't have Skyrim and MW3 hitting at the same time and you get a night of midnight release hype to yourself.

The downside in this case is that Bethesda apparently didn't do a very good job of making sure their retail partners understood the actual release date.  From the official forums there are plenty of reports of people walking into places today and seeing Skyrim already on the shelf because most places just assume games come out Tuesday.

He needs to find someone who can write at the same level of quality that brought us Rutger's character's soliloquy towards the end of the original.  That scene still strikes me as one of the best ever in a sci fi film (hell...ANY film).

They used two different screenwriters on the first movie plus Ridley Scott changed things plus Hauer added a bunch of stuff on his own that they kept.  He modified that soliloquy, for example.

You should have no problem finding a nice 3D plasma that meets your other requirements. But, to be honest, its rather pointless talking about specifics right now because by January you are going to be seeing "end of the model year" and "we bought too many and didn't sell them at Xmas" sales on TVs.  You seem to have a good grasp of the specifics you will be looking for then, so it will simply be tracking down the best deal.  Something we can't help you with right now, obviously.   icon_lol

I remember liking the show, but it seems like an odd one to do a movie update of.  It worked mostly because of Lee Majors being Lee Majors, sort of how TJ Hooker worked because of Shatner.  Off the top of my head I can't think of an obvious person.  But then again, most of the "movie update of a TV show" stuff has been pretty weak, so who knows what they will end up with if it actually is made.

USC/Stanford was probably one of the best football games I've ever seen, period.  I'd really like to see Stanford get a shot for NC this year solely for the reason that this might be their only legit shot in the next 50 years.  It'd be a great story.

Assuming they get by Oregon they have a good shot at a spot in the title game.  But if the remaining undefeated teams win out, then they are probably screwed because the Alabama/LSU winner is a lock if they win out and right now Oklahoma State is ranked higher then Stanford.  So one of those has to lose for Stanford to get its shot.

I'm sorry for Boise State and Houston.  Though it would be interesting if those two ended up undefeated and everyone else ended up losing a game . . .  ninja

Paradox (the publisher) says they will offer refunds and a lot of people got refunds from Steam for Rage, so there is a chance there as well if you want to go that route.

It sounds like they may have pushed this out the door to make sure it got on Steam for the holidays.  Thats the speculation elsewhere, anyway.   Maybe it will be on sale for the Steam XMas sale; at any rate we should have a better idea of what can/will be fixed by then.

The original DA is pretty epic, warts and all.  The second DA is more of a modern game, and takes a lot from Mass Effect 2's approach to making an RPG.

Wow. I'm wondering if Bioware has lost the magic, or if EA is breathing down their necks, forcing them to serve up mediocrity. For me, the only misfire they ever had was Neverwinter Nights. Dragon Age II sounds like it may follow that legacy.

This.  DA2 was made the way it was because while DA sold reasonably well, it took so long to make that it was probably marginally profitable at best when all was said and done.  So a quick and dirty sequel that uses a small environment (saving money on art) was the best way to make more money.

The real question is what happens next, but adding multi-player to ME3 isn't a good sign IMHO.
