I hear he's not quite given command through the normal channels.

Yeah, I bet we'll hear him brag about how he cheated the Kobayashi Maru.

Noooo, dammit, seems they've hired Bill Roper, as Design Director. The game is officially doomed now...  icon_confused Design Director? You kidding me? After the catastrophic failure of Hellgate: London, I wouldn't let him design anything.

Edit: Whoops, I just realized it said it was for Champions Online, but still, I wouldn't let him design anything. It might doom the company.
1246  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: What would be good settings for a new MMO? on: November 05, 2008, 11:20:32 PM
Dune's what I was thinking of lately. I've always thought it would make good backstory for an MMO. Can't believe it hasn't been done yet.

A Civil War MMO might be fun.

And Snow Crash would be a shoe-in for a great MMO, considering the Multiverse practically defined a virtual world with avatars long before any MMOs. Or maybe combine both Snow Crash and Diamond Age since both of those have often been thought of to be one world in different times.

Psst, Blackjack, not quite the same concept, but I think this would be right up your alley slywink

The far-fetched religious stories are based on ancient artifacts and legend, which fits for a fantastical archaeologist adventure.  The alien story is based on stories invented in the 50s, which isn't as fitting for a fantastical archaeological adventure.  When you hear "archaeologist" do you think of people digging up religious and/or historical artifacts or do you think about people digging for proof of alien conspiracies?

It's the genre-jumping that rubs me the wrong way. We had three movies based on a religious theme (Temple of Doom was still religious in terms of the cult aspect). Then they just up and jump it into X Files country.

Compared to previous Indy installments, this feels more like a modern concoction than something to do with the past, which is what the others were about. Putting aliens in a story like this feels like a copout, especially with the ending that didn't make sense.

Bingo. I think when archaeology delves into alien artifacts, it becomes xeno-archaeology, which would be a specialization that I don't think Indy would have. The ending made it feel like it was half-finished.

story elements made no sense and weren't even part of the Indiana storyline (when the blubberfuct was he a Colonel in the military investigating government crash sites or doing CIA work overseas  retard).

During WW2.

Yeah, "Codename: Jack Ryan", you know? slywink It's all supposed to make sense in Harrison Ford's movieverse. Maybe that's why his character in Firewall was so badly wanted.

Yeah, the whole alien angle just sucked. What made it worse was that there was practically nothing leading up to it or no explanation for why the aliens were there. It just was. And we're just supposed to take it? It was one of the most WTF'd endings of all time.

The best part for me were the motorcycle stunts as they're being chased in the city.

And I still think that the soundtrack sucked. The familiar theme was hardly there. I wanted the movie to open with the epic score, but instead opened with rock and roll, and it kind of felt empty. They could of at least done a rock and roll version of the theme, which would have helped a bit. But instead, the theme only appeared from time to time to remind us that the crap we were watching was Indy.

The worst part about this? They actually want to make another one. I sure hope they've learned their lesson here if they do. I'd rip it out of canon, especially due to the end.

I'd actually like to see an Indiana Jones movie that shows him in his first adventure, or more to the point, adventures leading up to him getting the 'Indiana' Jones name. Something sort of like the TV series did.

My Dad picked up a bottle of Laphroaig Scotch Whisky from Islay (as mentioned by Disarm) and it's quite good. Nice and smooth and subtle flavour. Though it's quite expensive at $40 a bottle for the 10 Year, though they have varieties up to 40 year. Probably considered one of the better Scotch Whiskies.

Btw, if you happen to be passing through the US/Canadian border, make sure to take a trip to the Duty Free. They tend to have some good deals on the Crown Royal for 2 bottles for the price of one.

There's airbrushing, and then there's overdone airbrushing. To me the ones that get overdone are uninteresting. A lot of airbrushing removes depth of the image. And so what if people aren't perfect? That's part of the charm. Imperfections are being removed by 1's and 0's. Is this what we want to be remembered by?

I agree with you in principle, but the producers are going to keep it set in a locale where the participants can wear as little as possible.

Well, I think wearing as little as possible is a pretty weak excuse if you ask me. They could have games like  polar diving and sled dog races. Other times off camera could have them in a heated cabin which I think would be a good compromise.

If Survivor is going to last longer they really need to mix it up.

make it a true survivor and give everyone a revolver, six bullets and nothing else on a deserted island.

Better yet, set it in the arctic. Warm climates have become boring. Why does Survivor always have to be in warm climates? Where's the fun in that when you know what to expect in them? Finding an isolated location in the arctic would be easy enough. Set it near Resolute Bay, the northern-most point of civilization, and they'd be near it in case of emergency, yet still far enough.

I thought it was fun, but it certainly took liberties and managed to make the original look like it was rocket science. That scene where KITT is on fire and where they strip was completely ridiculous.

While the dialogue was pretty bad, it was actually an improvement on the pilot movie, and KITT finally did sound like a computer. A bit like HAL, actually.

The 90-second spot, one of three adverts for which Seinfeld was paid a reported $10 million, was designed to kick off an ambitious $300 million campaign to relaunch the software company and its troubled Windows Vista operating system.

But two weeks after debuting, the three commercials were withdrawn in favour of other adverts in which Seinfeld, whose eponymous hit sitcom ended a decade ago, is replaced by such stars as the actress Eva Longoria and singer Pharrell Williams.

Im always going to be of the opinion if you dont like the legal methods a company takes to secure its own products then DONT BUY THEM.   Its pretty simple as you arent forced to buy these games.   Much more logical to do that then go to piracy, cracks and other such bs.

Brett, I'm right there with you on this one. I don't buy many games, so the games that I do buy have to be ones that hold a lot of value to me. I've managed to ride the Starforce wave and not buy a single game using Starforce. There was a demo I had downloaded which used Starforce, but had installed that before I knew of it. Besides that, it never touched my system. Ironically, none of the games that used Starforce really appealed to me for some reason. I figure, if I really want a game, It will have to be a game good enough for me to put on my machine without any stupid DRM. I like games that use limitation creatively to curb pirating. For example, with TDU, a game which I love btw, the game is literally an MMO on wheels with it seemlessly blending Online with Offline content. If you don't have an online account, or a modified game, then it won't let you online, which limits Pirates to single-player. You can't complete the game without going online either.

Btw, about TDU, did anyone know that they finally released a car pack to catch up with the XBox? Yep, they did. I don't have it, but they put in nearly every car that the XBox had as part of DLCs.

Yeah, see that's the thing. It's the fact that it was sci-fi that bothered me the most when there IS in fact kids in other countries fighting wars in real life. I felt it was almost as if it was saying it was OK for it to happen, and that disgusted me.

Vtech? Hehe, that's not a name I think of when I think of PCs. Don't they make those kid computers?

My Dad just bought a new computer to replace his aging PIII 350. He's had it and been using it for 8 years. It was getting to the point that it was too much of a bother to do anything on it anymore, especially after he had a virus on it and with the anti-virus locking up on it due to being so slow.

Our first computer was an IBM clone, an 8088 which served us well for many years. We had moved on to a 286 running Win 3.1, and then my Dad bought an Acer Lunchbox 386 to serve alongside. Around that time, I invested in getting my own PC, an amazing Pentium 133. Then later my Dad got the one he recently replaced.
