Let me preface by saying that I am a huge fan and very much looking forward to the movie....and no one was more disappointed in Enterprise- I so wanted it to be awesome.

But, is it just me or these photos make the show look like some teen-angst-ridden CW version of One Tree Hill in space or some such show?  I hope I am wrong but I see those photos and I can't help feel a sense of doom.

Yep, that's what I feel.

My Dad picked up a bottle of Laphroaig Scotch Whisky from Islay (as mentioned by Disarm) and it's quite good. Nice and smooth and subtle flavour. Though it's quite expensive at $40 a bottle for the 10 Year, though they have varieties up to 40 year. Probably considered one of the better Scotch Whiskies.

Btw, if you happen to be passing through the US/Canadian border, make sure to take a trip to the Duty Free. They tend to have some good deals on the Crown Royal for 2 bottles for the price of one.

Yeah, too much salt is no good. Not to mention too much salt can bring your blood pressure higher. I've got a friend who can't have a grain of salt, if you can imagine. His body can't process it. He's got a kidney disease.

I can just hear the tagline now. "When the baby rocks, the cradle WILL fall."

There's airbrushing, and then there's overdone airbrushing. To me the ones that get overdone are uninteresting. A lot of airbrushing removes depth of the image. And so what if people aren't perfect? That's part of the charm. Imperfections are being removed by 1's and 0's. Is this what we want to be remembered by?

I agree with you in principle, but the producers are going to keep it set in a locale where the participants can wear as little as possible.

Well, I think wearing as little as possible is a pretty weak excuse if you ask me. They could have games like  polar diving and sled dog races. Other times off camera could have them in a heated cabin which I think would be a good compromise.

make it a true survivor and give everyone a revolver, six bullets and nothing else on a deserted island.

Better yet, set it in the arctic. Warm climates have become boring. Why does Survivor always have to be in warm climates? Where's the fun in that when you know what to expect in them? Finding an isolated location in the arctic would be easy enough. Set it near Resolute Bay, the northern-most point of civilization, and they'd be near it in case of emergency, yet still far enough.

I thought it was fun, but it certainly took liberties and managed to make the original look like it was rocket science. That scene where KITT is on fire and where they strip was completely ridiculous.

While the dialogue was pretty bad, it was actually an improvement on the pilot movie, and KITT finally did sound like a computer. A bit like HAL, actually.

The 90-second spot, one of three adverts for which Seinfeld was paid a reported $10 million, was designed to kick off an ambitious $300 million campaign to relaunch the software company and its troubled Windows Vista operating system.

But two weeks after debuting, the three commercials were withdrawn in favour of other adverts in which Seinfeld, whose eponymous hit sitcom ended a decade ago, is replaced by such stars as the actress Eva Longoria and singer Pharrell Williams.

Im always going to be of the opinion if you dont like the legal methods a company takes to secure its own products then DONT BUY THEM.   Its pretty simple as you arent forced to buy these games.   Much more logical to do that then go to piracy, cracks and other such bs.

Brett, I'm right there with you on this one. I don't buy many games, so the games that I do buy have to be ones that hold a lot of value to me. I've managed to ride the Starforce wave and not buy a single game using Starforce. There was a demo I had downloaded which used Starforce, but had installed that before I knew of it. Besides that, it never touched my system. Ironically, none of the games that used Starforce really appealed to me for some reason. I figure, if I really want a game, It will have to be a game good enough for me to put on my machine without any stupid DRM. I like games that use limitation creatively to curb pirating. For example, with TDU, a game which I love btw, the game is literally an MMO on wheels with it seemlessly blending Online with Offline content. If you don't have an online account, or a modified game, then it won't let you online, which limits Pirates to single-player. You can't complete the game without going online either.

Btw, about TDU, did anyone know that they finally released a car pack to catch up with the XBox? Yep, they did. I don't have it, but they put in nearly every car that the XBox had as part of DLCs.

I was bothered about that at first - but then thought, its a book - a sci-fi/fantasy novel.  I've read worst and seen worse in RL.

Yeah, see that's the thing. It's the fact that it was sci-fi that bothered me the most when there IS in fact kids in other countries fighting wars in real life. I felt it was almost as if it was saying it was OK for it to happen, and that disgusted me.

Vtech? Hehe, that's not a name I think of when I think of PCs. Don't they make those kid computers?

My Dad just bought a new computer to replace his aging PIII 350. He's had it and been using it for 8 years. It was getting to the point that it was too much of a bother to do anything on it anymore, especially after he had a virus on it and with the anti-virus locking up on it due to being so slow.

Our first computer was an IBM clone, an 8088 which served us well for many years. We had moved on to a 286 running Win 3.1, and then my Dad bought an Acer Lunchbox 386 to serve alongside. Around that time, I invested in getting my own PC, an amazing Pentium 133. Then later my Dad got the one he recently replaced.

Move to Canada?

Trust me in saying that what KD describes here is not an ucommon scenario in my Canadian city at all. As much as there's many good things about government healthcare, one of the downsides is that payment caps to practicioners means many of them don't want to be GP's. So moving north of the 49th parallel unfortnately wouldn't alleviate this kind of problem.

Yep, exactly. In fact, a lot of Canadian practitioners have moved to the US, leaving us with a shortage of doctors. Most people in Canada don't have a family practioner, and a lot of them aren't accepting new patients. Contrary to popular belief, the medical system doesn't pay for everything. For example, I'm having wisdom teeth removed and the system doesn't cover that, even though you'd think it would considering dentistry is a form of health care.  And waits can be long. I was told I needed my wisdom teeth removed sometime in March and I'm getting them removed this Tuesday.

Yeah, exactly. I think you hit it right on the mark.

The whole significance of this campaign will just fly right over the average computer user. And consider the fact that the average computer user doesn't care about what they're using as long as things work, they won't care about the origin of Windows.

And considering even technologically minded people can't even really figure out what this is all about, think about all the "huh?" and furrowed brows that this is generating to the average user. Just a load more of confusion that MS doesn't need at this point.
1273  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: The Fall TV Season 2008 is here! on: September 07, 2008, 07:06:48 PM
I admit, I watched 90210 because I was curious and thought it was total crap. Even considering the original 90210, I don't think it fell within the same standards. Way too much drama for a first episode and too much superficialism. If someone plagiarizes you, I would think you'd be angry with the person for at least the entire season, if not the entire series, and not have everything be hunky dory by the end of the episode and be friends again with that person. My Brother went through an ordeal awhile back that very nearly kicked him out of university due to something a team project member had plagiarized. Friends with the jerk who did it? Hell no.  And the plane trip to San Franscisco dinner date? Please. That just doesn't happen in the real world.  One that revolves around high school kids anyhow.

Ironically, the actress that landed the main role, Shanea Grimes came over from Degrassi: TNG, and  I think that's a much better series. I almost feel bad for her that she had to leave the success of that show for this, although it should open more doors for her.

Oh, I don't doubt it. But for some reason, I get the feeling the next ones will be more WTF, and if that's the direction MS is going in, then uhhh what?

Although, I admit, it would be pretty funny seeing Seinfeld take him to the comedy club and have him do standup.

If you have to explain it, then it's not effective marketing.

I happen to agree. I predict an epic fail. Imagine spending all that money on this campaign only to have people scratching their heads in confusion. That's exactly what MS doesn't need right now. With the web of confusion that is Vista, they need something clear and concise to reassure people of their buying decisions, not a philosophical rambling about shoes.

I'm reminded of a commercial years ago that gave me a serious WTF moment, and not in a good way.  It was a Chevy commercial advertising one of their trucks, only it kept going on and on about "You've Got Mail", and how they loved it. Not once did the commercial say anything about the truck. Not even at the end. It made me wonder what exactly they were advertising. Were they advertising the movie, which was already out on video at this point, or were they advertsing Chevy? It felt like the commercial had an identity crisis. It was also the only time I ever saw the commercial. I figure it got pulled.
