681  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Is the 360 worth buying? on: March 23, 2006, 10:33:52 PM
I just bought mine, and I would say without a doubt yes - if you have a high def tv and good sound system.  The graphics in some of the 360 games are nothing short of amazing.  I have a high powered PC also, on a 20 inch widescreen monitor, but it doesn't come close to giving the same sense of awe I get from GRAW or Burnout Revenge or Fight Night Round 3 on my 46" high def tv and 5.1 sound.  I'm hoping Oblivion will invoke a similar response.

Now if you're talking about buying a 360 without a high def tv, or sound system - don't bother.  As far as I'm concerned the system was designed for those things, and hooking a 360 up to your 27" standard TV means you're only getting 50% of the experience.  Better off sticking with an xbox.

Is it like Crimson Skies?  That was very 'arcadey' and I loved it.  How does it compare?  I would be out if it was too sim like.
683  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / General "can't find 360" grumbling on: March 14, 2006, 07:04:31 PM
Anyone have any tips on how to locate a premium 360 in Canada, specifically in Edmonton? Are there any of those handy stock checker websites available for Canadian retailers? I've been harassing my local Best Buys and Walmarts on the phone for 2 weeks and none of them ever have any in stock or seem to get any in stock.

Ideas? Can't believe I can't find one after 4 months in release...

685  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Anyone else regret not being born in today's age? on: February 06, 2006, 09:45:01 PM
I would have loved to have lived in a time where I could carve out my own piece of land, hunted my own food, built my own home... a life where I work not to make someone else wealthy and get paid a salary in return, but a life where any work I do directly benefits me and my loved ones, and is meaningful rewarding work like growing my food, or building my home.

Having said that, I'm sure every time and place has it's own set of drawbacks.  When I get mauled by a bear while walking in my woods in my above scenario, I have no one to blame but myself.  smile
686  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / What's your GOAT of the year so far - 2005 PC edition on: December 22, 2005, 08:23:58 PM
GOATs have to be more than just bad games - they have to be highly anticipated follow ups to beloved classics, or much hyped new franchises.  They have to provide that utter let down and anger that a much loved classic has been besmirched.

To that end, the biggest GOATs of all time (transcending specific years):

HoMM 4
MoO 3

and KOTR2 to a lesser extent.

All three made me want to give up new games and just play my old classics for ever and ever.
687  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / MOO v. MOO2 - Fight! on: December 22, 2005, 08:19:47 PM
There is no MOO 3.  There was MoO, then the sequel, MoO 2.  We're still hoping someone will eventually create MoO 3.  Anyone who says different is dead to me.

Except I don't want to have to swap discs on consoles anymore now that we have incredibly huge storage capacity.

So having to put in a second or third DVD at hour 40 and 80 of a gaming experience is enough to make you not want the console?  Wow.

I'm happy MS decided to go with a cheaper hardware choice to keep console costs down, as well as not making a decision before the DVD format wars were over and putting themselves into a corner.  Sony Blu-Ray is well and good, but since HD-DVD has essentially won the war, they're going to run the risk of being a Betamax all over again.  A year from now Blu-Ray might be something that no one is interested in EXCEPT for PS3.  What's Sony going to do then?

NFL2K5 in the bottom 5 of this generation?  Um, I don't think so.  EA has yet to produce a football game even close to any of the 2k series.  That's why they bought the license.

691  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [X360] Good News! Oblivion will NOT require the hard drive. on: August 19, 2005, 05:54:46 PM

You're kidding me, you think all the 360 games are going to offer no entertainment, and nothing you haven't seen on an Xbox or PS1 unless you have a HD television and play the games wirelessly online? Do you hear what you're saying?

Um, yes, I do.  Of course the games will offer entertainment.  The games on consoles in generations past offered great gameplay too.  You can find great games on any console.  "Better Games" isn't an included feature of the 360.  There will be good games and crap games, like every other system out there.  I suppose if you want to spend $400 (before the cost of the game) just so you can play Oblivion, that's your perogative, but I would personally qualify that as stupid.

What are the features of the 360?  Graphics designed around higher resolutions and high definition TV.  Integrated Wireless controllers.  Online multiplayer built into nearly every game, with Live becoming more and a more a part of the core as opposed to an optional add on.  You're kidding yourself if you don't think MS has designed the box to be an online gaming gateway.  If you don't intend to take advantage of any of those features, why spend the money?  Sure, you'll have different games to play, but they too are going to include hosts of features whos development you'll be paying for when you buy them and then not using.

Quote
If it was designed around that technology, you'd think they'd include it with every one they sell...

Agreed... isn't that why people are pissed off?  Because MS has now decided that the $299 price point they hinted at before is essentially for a crippled version of the console that doesn't include many of the core design features?  That in order to take advantage of the real power of the 360, you need to buy the $399 version?

Obviously MS decided they weren't willing to take that much of a hit on hardware, but didn't want to scrap the $299 point altogether.  They also probably know how much Sony is hurting with the PS3 and realize they're not under as much pressure as they were in the past.

Why am I stupid for not getting the $400 bundle?

I don't play on Live, so I don't need the headset or the wireless ethernet.
I don't have an HD TV, so I don't need the cables.
I don't sit on my couch but right in front of my TV, so I don't need a wireless controller.

The only advantage for me is HD caching. Well how much will that improve my life? $100 worth? $60 worth (since I will have to get a memory card)

I don't think I am a complete idiot - I think the $400 bundle sucks for anyone not playing on line.

Why are you buying an XBox 360, a game console designed around Hi Def, Online gaming and wireless technology, if you intend to use 10% of the functionality?  Why not just keep your XBox, or better yet a PS1?

Normal = 20%
Terrible service = 10%
Excellent service = 30%

Why why why would you tip someone who admittedly delivered terrible service?  A tip is a reward, not an obligation.  This whole 'tip as part of the waitresses salary' thing is just ridiculous.  I'll tip 20% when I get good service, but if I'm unhappy I'm not going to give anyone a reward for anything.  If they need tips to supplement their crappy salary they should either be providing good service or find a job where their crappy attitude isn't going to affect their take home pay.

Rise of Nations was awesome, and I have confidence that Rise of Legends will also be.  Looks incredible.  This and AOE 3 have me fondly remembering the epic AOK and TA battles I had with my buddies years back (sadly they're not much in the way of gamers anymore).

I won't get into all the technical ways to do it, but look into disabling the messenger service, particularly if you're not running a windows firewall.  Lots of malware makes use of that particular piece of MS goodness.  Be sure you know what you're doing, though - disabling services is sometimes dangerous.

700  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / What game have you replayed the most? on: March 19, 2005, 09:00:39 PM
Civ 2 / 3
Freespace 2
Total Annihilation and Expansions
HoMM 3 and Expansions
MOO 2
BG2
Diablo 2
Starcraft
Warcraft 3 and Expansion
Quake 3

These are probably the only games that have been consistently reinstalled and replayed on my machine multiple times.  I could probably stop buying games, create an image with just these installed, and happily rotate through them for the rest of my game playing life.  (might get a shooter jones every once in a while).

In terms of total hours played, though, Bards Tale 1, 2 and 3 take the cake.  Played those for hundreds of hours on my Apple 2e in my parents basement for most of junior high.

The vast majority of gamers were extremely let down by Doom 3, so yes, it deserves to be on a list that reflects the worst of 2004.  Worse than Big Rig Racing?  No.  But it had much higher standards to live up to.  Good and Bad are not black and white concepts.  They're relative.

I have a lvl 6 human mage and a lvl 12 dwarf pally on Darkspear, which is PvP, and have yet to see anyone of the opposing alliance, let alone have problems with people ganking me.  Just pick a low pop server and you get a decent balance of safety and danger.  Besides, I thought you were only in danger in contested areas, anyway... doesn't that mean that you're safe in newbie zones?

I also have a 22 shaman on Whisperwind... fun, but way more downtime.  Also the Barrens, which is where I'm questing, is CONSTANTLY under attack by Alliance raids.  Ya, they can't touch you unless you flag one of them, but one time I healed someone I passed who must have had his flag on, and for the next 20 min one or another of the endless Alliance raids would kill me on sight.  Ironically I've been ganked far more in PvE than ever on my PvP server.  smile

Very weak year!?  Cripes, man, this year has had more blockbuster potential game of the year contenders than the last 5 years combined, as far as I'm concerned.  Wow.

Oh, and WOW is my game of the year, with HL2 being about a millionth of an inch below it.  R:TW, COH, Far Cry - all would have been game of the year for me in any of the past 5 years.  Doom 3 gets my biggest let down of the year award.

I have a lvl 17 Shaman on WhisperWind in the Wanderers, but the lag and constant downtime drove me crazy.  I now also have a lvl 12 Paladin on Darkspear and am MUCH happier with the server performance.  I'm trying to keep playing on WhisperWind, because I want to play with the guild, but the unfortunate choice of server is really killing me.

Anyone else using Catalyst 4.11 with the control center?  I'm getting severe texture corruption all over the place, seems to get worse as I bump up the resolution or AA/AF.  I'm running an overclocked 9600 Pro, should be able to run 1024x768 from what I gather, but even at 800x600 I'm getting texture corruptions and artifacts.  Not having problems in any other games, so don't think the card is having a problem... plus I've had it at a stable overclock for almost 4 months now.

Even stranger!  Just went into my display properties to see what the OC was set at, and when I click advanced, the pc reboots!  Did it 3 times.  Any ideas?  Wasn't having any problems with 4.9 earlier today before I upgraded, at Steam's urging.
