I feel that the glitches in CODWOW are an embarrassment, but not as much as failing to fix them. However, I like the bigger maps, their design and the little details. I also prefer dogs to choppers. Tanks bothered me at first, but now that I'm a certified Tank Whore(tm) I look forward to those maps as well.

congrats,as you can't be in a tank on cliffside, you wanna tell us your secret?

Well, it doesn't hurt that my first six kills were on the cliff side part of the map. I just waited in ambush and those six guys, one by one, walked through the narrow pass to the cliff side from the Japanese spawn. Then I dropped artillery and sent off dogs, getting a few more kills. I ended up with another round of dogs, and another session of ambushing the enemy who came down the exact same route as before. Makes me smile  icon_smile

I downloaded and played the demo. Very disappointed. It's a very pretty arcade shooter. Controls are weird, combat is mindless, there are no tactics worth considering, just fly and shoot. Pass.

Newly announced, the developers will be adding a hardcore mode to multiplayer for all platforms. I didn't like MP in Far Cry for the same reason I don't like it in the COD series; I want to be able to kill someone with only a couple of rounds, not pray that an entire clip will be enough. Here's hoping it comes to pass, and it doesn't suck.

Grand Theft Auto IV: The Lost & Damned

It's one of the few games where I've ever finished the entire campaign. Here's hoping the DLC adds not only some interesting missions but maybe some nice extras to make it worth replaying the campaign soon. I got the GTASA "Xbox Original" DLC a couple of weeks ago and even with godawful graphics it's a lot of fun.

So Afro Samurai seems to be getting all the media hype but no one here is interested?  I'm slightly interested but will wait for reviews/impressions.

Initial reviews over at Gameranking average 69%. IGN gave it a 6.6...

It sucks that Afro Samurai isn't awesome. If you take the plunge and buy this game, there will be times when you'll be playing, having a blast, and think that I'm full of crap. Falling through the air while brawling with Afro Droid while rocking out to some fat beats is an amazing experience, but when you couple that with a piss-poor camera, terrible platforming sections, and cheap/mentally challenged bosses, the end product suffers.

Don't doubt that there is fun to be had with Afro Samurai, but be ready to deal with a lot of lame to get to it.

DLC for a game like Fallout means squat to me.  The chances of me even finishing the original game are close to zero so I'm not going to go about spending money for MORE content.

I'm waiting to play the DLC till I finish the Vault 87 mission. I've got 44 hours in on the game and I don't have a clue as to how far I'm through the whole thing. However, once I get done with this mission I'll go play the DLC, just at least so I feel like I got my money's worth.

Cripes, I dropped F3 after getting rather tired of the repetitiveness of the missions. Also, I understand that this one is mostly fighting the Chinese. I would be happy to find that this isn't true and there's some real depth to it.

Also, how many MSP for the DLC for the 360?

My resistance faded and I bought this. However, since I was in the middle of the Vault 87 quest I never got to it last night. Here's hoping it's worth it.

Since I had problems with this on my PC lately, I got a sudden urge to get this Xbox Original for my 360. Yup, the graphics are PS2 like on my 24" Gateway LCD monitor/TV, but it's been so long since I did the story from the beginning, it's fun again. Controls on the 360 aren't bad at all compared to the PC or my old PS2 version. In fact driving seems to be easier, or maybe that's compared to doing it in GTA4.

I'd also recommend COD:WaW, or COD4. Do MP, since the SP game at times is rather hectic. Also, and this might be more of a personal preference, do Hardcore Mode. There's fewer people running around like maniacs so you spend more time learning without some hyper 12 year old racing up to you and gutting you with a knife.

Ehh, I actually disagree, I think SP would be a better place to start.  #1, you can crank the difficulty way down, and even though the action may be more hectic, it's far more forgiving.  #2, there's no way I'd start on hardcore mode.  Success in hardcore depends on being able to accurately target your enemy quickly, which is what he's trying to learn how to do.  Yeah it's less frantic than regular MP, but when you run across an enemy you better be able to kill them within a split second or you're toast.

I see your point about cranking the difficulty down being a help, that's good, I hadn't considered that. I mention hardcore because in my playing of COD4 and CODWAW I found that things kept moving too fast in regular play, and also often it took several hits to kill. If you are having trouble aiming (as I *still* do) it's more helpful that if you get that first round on target it's a kill. Also, and again it might just be me, but I found the frustration factor a lot less in hardcore than in regular play for my aging, slow reactions.

Speaking as someone who really did have to go through the grinder to learn the gamepad after a decade with the keyboard plus mouse, I'd also recommend COD:WaW, or COD4. Do MP, since the SP game at times is rather hectic. Also, and this might be more of a personal preference, do Hardcore Mode. There's fewer people running around like maniacs so you spend more time learning without some hyper 12 year old racing up to you and gutting you with a knife.

In MP, on each map, find a good place to camp and start taking out the enemy that way. Don't worry about low scores or if people start whining about your camping. Focus on learning to track people as they move.

It's going to take time, no way around that.

I'm having a great time playing this, now that I'm going slowly and working through all the quests.

Best line so far? Shepard uses his Intimidation to convince some warehouse workers to put away their guns and walk away instead of defending Fist. Wrex looks at Shepard and says:

I forgot that the last time I played this is was on a cheaper LCD display that hooked to the 360 using a VGA adapter. Now I've got a good monitor and component cables and it looks very good!

I'm making myself watch every cutscene. I did make my character brutally handsome, so that helps.

I'm in my January "I've gotten bored with the games that came out October/November" mood. I had gotten Mass Effect when it first came out for the 360, but I was playing so many other games then (especially COD4) that I never was able to develop an interest in it. I traded it in after a month (got a good deal on the trade in  icon_biggrin). Now I think I'm ready to go give it a try again.

I've looked through the comments above, especially Pete's comments about talking to all the crew after missions, something I never bothered with. Any other suggestions about how to "get into" the game?

Just read a little blurb over on Kotaku. According to one of the comments posted, there are four new missions, but the map they are on doesn't integrate into the regular map. Also the new vehicles only appear on the new map and aren't available in the regular game. Still it's free so sometime I might check it out. Mercenaries 2 was fun for a while but did get old, however it shouldn't be hard to get back into.

Sheesh, they have screwed up something royally in XBL COD5. When I joined Hark's party and we kept trying to get HC TDM it kept dropping us into HC S&D. When I struck out on my own to find HC TDM matches, I couldn't get them to load at all. The only HC type that worked for me was Free-for-all. So I decided screw it, I'll back to COD4. Now *that's* messed up as well, can't get a HC TDM match started there either. WTF?

31  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Far Cry 2 on: December 02, 2008, 05:18:26 PM
Your comments about the vehicle FoV are dead on. Real world eyesight depends on peripheral clues missing in the game. The game could definitely use a chase view. After playing a while you do learn some of the roads well enough to run full tilt, but I'm not willing to spend that much time for the whole map.

The save system bothers me as well. Yes, it's all well and good that having only save point locations in the safe houses and after completing missions adds an element of "realism", but I'm playing a game dammit and I don't what to have to load the last save and hoof across country *again* just because I got whacked by some doofus out in the middle of nowhere.

The game cries out for an "Oblivion" type treatment; give me NPCs to talk to, things to uncover and quests to fulfill. Maybe Bethesda could buy the rights to the series and make a "Far Cry 3" as good as "Fallout 3". Until then, this is a game I'll go back to sometime early next year when I tire of other things I'm playing now.

Has anybody else been getting lockups while playing?  I had 5 lockups while trying to play multiplayer tonight I think I'm gonna exchange the disc.

No lockups at all with COD5, well at least not with MP. I did try the SP campaign but it was too linear, too frantic.

I did take Hark's suggestions concerning a better anti-tank loadout. Sadly unless I'm with the GT folks in a match the AT effort isn't coordinated and I still am getting my ass kicked by the tank. I do find the best weapon to use against a tank is another tank, so I'm haunting the spawn spots. I'm using the perk that gives faster reloads of the main gun.

37  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Call of Duty World at War (360) impressions on: November 24, 2008, 05:16:04 PM
Hark, thanks for mentioning the Fireworks perk and hitting the same area. My anti-tank loadout has been the two shot Bazooka and a sticky grenade but I'm frustrated that usually it fails to stop the tank.

Really though, I wish they had stuck with COD4's concept and not included any vehicles. Or in Hardcore make the tank more vulnerable so that the team with one would feel the need to provide infantry support near it as it rolled around.

Optionally perhaps we could have a perk (there isn't one, is there?) of anti-tank mines. Two or three guys with a couple of those would really restrict the tank from cruising all over creation and whacking everyone.

Of the changes from COD4, the one that effects me most is that in COD4 my usual weapon of choice was the RPD LMG with red-dot sight. Really, it's a great all around weapon. Easy to aim, you can pop off one or two rounds and in Hardcore that's all you need at a time. And I almost never had to reload since the mag held enough for my usual lifespan in a round. In COD5 there is not equivalent sight and the mags seem to run out quicker, which is probably for the better. So now I have to compromise.

I do love the dogs! The attack helo in COD4 was hard to kill and made you an easy target. The dogs can give you points if you can funnel them as they approach your position and you can take them out with bettys.

Can someone give me their thoughts on the best weapons to have equipped for each map?  Maybe perks too?  I only have one custom set so far that I'm using all the time.  There are too many options.

Please note all my comments are directed towards Hardcore Team Deathmatch, which is my preferred mode of play.

If as you note your aim is lacking, then welcome to my world! I have crappy hand-eye coordination, so my preferred option is to put as many bullets on target as possible, before the other guy even spots me. To beat the other guy you have to be able to see him first. Therefore the optical aperture sight is an excellent attachment to an SMG on the smaller maps, while putting one on the assault rifles (SVT-40? And that German one) is better for big maps like Airfield. This way you can hold left trigger and zoom in to watch for enemies while not losing much of your sight picture. You can even crouch (always crouch if not running!) and slowly move while watching a choke point for a target to appear.

For perks, my favorite in slot 1 is the Bouncing Betty. Use it to help prevent people from sneaking up behind you. For instance, on the Hanger map, I like to put a couple in the low bay rooms of the hanger itself to stop folks from sneaking up from that direction, and then position myself to watch the other approaches.

In slot 2 there is no question. it's Camouflage. For all the Young Turks who can run and gun, being seen when the recon plane is up is no big deal, but for us creepers and campers being invisible is mandatory.

Slot 3 depends on taste. I find Second Chance and Martyrdom to be useless for me and since I rarely run Extreme Conditioning is a waste. Therefore Deep Impact suits me fine. Most maps have places where my DI perk makes a difference between a wasted bullet and a kill.
