1161  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Geebus! Have you seen Roger Ebert? on: March 02, 2010, 02:23:05 PM
Just came across this story from the Toronto Star during my morning routine of Tim's and a bagel. My goodness - apart from the missing jaw he looks nothing at all like I remembered him.

http://www.thestar.com/entertainment/movies/article/773562--roger-ebert-tells-his-thyroid-cancer-story-on-oprah-today?bn=1

Good for him on not staying quiet - shows some fierce confidence that we could all use from time to time.

Teggy - this was on the news here this morning - especially on talk radio that I listen to during my drive into work.

Pretty lame in many people's minds up here in Canada. There is no story here - the journalist who supposedly took the pictures is from NJ and was hanging around the rink to get the US team's reaction to the game.
There was nothing insensitive about the woman's celebration as it was about an hour after the game and the arena was pretty much empty.

The Canadian IOC actually apologized for the team's behaviour. Seriously lame. The women were in no way rubbing it in.

In fact - the majority Canadian audience was chanting USA USA USA when the team was getting their silver medals.

Canada is too damn apologetic and bashful when it comes to boasting and celebrating. Heck even our Prime Minister told the Olympians to stop being so refined and let lose! . Sorry icon_lol

The only thing to be sorry for was that some of them chose to drink Girls Light (Coors) when they should have been drinking Molson Canadian. Also one of the players is only 18 and was drinking - the legal age in Canada is 19 (18 in Quebec).
Still lame.

Played for the first time in months last night.  Jumped into a game with Nonnahob, RomyBolognaPony, and Calvin.  I didn't bother to turn my mic on as rarely do I have much to say outside of cursing and I just wasn't up for much conversation following hours of chem homework and more home renovations.  I just needed a brief distraction/break for a bit and figured MW2 was as good an option as any.  I was surprised to hear Calvin ask who I was as I was sure we've played MP games in the past (Halo 3, maybe Gears of War).

I didn't really do anything noteworthy, playing a little below a 1:1 kill/death ratio, but I attribute that to not having played a videogame outside of 1 vs. 100 for the past few months.  The main issue I ran into was wondering what guns folks were using.  I was killed by either Nonnahob or Romy (can't remember which) when I was moved to the opposing team and each time I watched the killcam I saw what appeared to be no recoil on their weapon whatsoever.  I have yet to find a weapon that doesn't have recoil, and each time I watched the camera it looked like their red dot sight stayed pretty steady.  As my thumbstick aiming isn't always steady, I could really use a weapon with little to no recoil.  LMGs are out for me as I can't keep them steady, I'm not a sniper rifle fan, and SMGs still seem to have quite a bit of recoil.  Only the M4 and the M16 work out best for me.

I'm not sure what gun it was, but I certainly want one.

The only guy I used last night was the AUG (which I was using most of the night) and the ACR. It was one of the two. I don't use SMGs.

Pete - I was using the ACR last night. Love love love that gun and use it 99% of the time. I did use the SCAR too - but would bet dollars to donuts that it was the ACR that I was using. The ACR has like ZERO recoil - I think you get it at level 51?

ya sorry - I meant ROI more along the terms of someone else above saying that 6-8hrs is too little for $60-$70 initial outlay.
1167  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [360/PS3]Dantes Inferno on: February 22, 2010, 01:54:44 PM
Finished this one yesterday afternoon and am overall satisfied with the game. Did it blow me out of the water? No. Did I expect it to? No.
I think I clocked in at just under 8hrs - again I do not look for ROI on my gaming purchases - I just want to be entertained. And those 8 hrs were obviously spread over the past 13 calendar days. That is how I play all my games - I simply cannot sit there for hours on end like I could when I was younger.

Will I replay with all the new unlockables - no.
Was it a good tide me over until GOW3 - yes.

I liked the story, 'historic' elements, feeling of dread and doom as I got lower into hell itself. The last set of nine challenges were not as bad I the reviewers made them out to be - I actually quite liked the challenges and trying to get past them.

All in all - I am satisfied with this game and will buy the sequel. Just maybe not on day 1.

Thanks in advance,
Roman

I will certainly admit that some of the jumping stuff is pissing me off.
For instance: one section had me pull a lever  thereby release some guillotine like platform contraption to fall from the ceiling. While it is falling I have to get to a ledge before the trap lowers too far and kills me
Took me about 30mins or so to get by it. Very frustrating. Why?
Because – without the trap falling from above I can easily double jump to the little alcove that will provide some protection. I can double jump with my eyes closed a hundred times.
But when the trap is sprung and the guillotine like platform is coming down I am suddenly unable to double jump and grab the platform? WTF?
I finally realized that I have to run and double jump rather than double jump from a standing position. Fing LAME! Believe me I did this time and time again to test the theory.
But anyway – I am enjoying the game. I like the level design and the feeling of dread. I will keep playing on until the end and probably send it to Calvin.

sure if you actively want to sit for 6+ hours and play something this will happen. But I would wager that the majority of us out here cannot put in that kind of time in one sitting.
I played for about 1.5hrs last evening and only managed to get onto Charon's boat and quit. I am enjoying it immensely thus far.

My 60 bucks will work itself out in the end - besides I rarely if ever buy a game for ROI above and beyond the smiles it gives me.

I'm going on hiatus until the care package glitch is implemented.

Played last night with Calvin, Romy and Archdan and saw all kinds of abuse with the care package. We probably left five or six rooms (once we knew it was happening, we bailed instantly).

The worst example was when we had this great game going on Favela, back and forth with the lead until about 5000/5000. Then all of a sudden some kid on the other team gets about 6 care packages. Half their team is defending him at the top of the street (where it is already a good place to defend, in the back area with the trench). The kid is doing the care package glitch with friends protecting him. We ended up losing. What a freaking buzzkill to be having a good competitive (and balanced) game and have someone screw it up with cheating. So frustrating.

yup. Looking forward to Dante's today. It was pretty lame to be under constant exploit. Lame lame lame.

noop. none at all. Calvin was very calm and diplomatic 99% of the conversation - which was one sided from my standpoint as I am 'friends only' on Live chat.

Conversation went something like this.

Calvin- “hey (gamertage) despite your cheating you still lost’
Calvin –“no I said you were cheating “
Calvin- “really? Really? Tell me how this is not cheating? Tell me how ‘because its in the game’ the devs wanted it this way”
Calvin- “No dude – no one is whining I am simply asking you why you feel the need to cheat?”
Calvin- “ well I just f*cked your mom so how do you like that?”

PS - Dan: glad you got your stuff back in order. Can I borrow your new CC# for a couple of purchases?

ya this was after you guys disbanded. We still had fun - I think that we have just resigned ourselves to the fact that the game is broken and no one cares so we just grin and bear it.
Other than leaving negative feedback and adding the glitchers to our list of 'avoided' players we are stuck.

I am looking forward to some Dante's Inferno next week anyway.

caught up with it lastnight for ep#2.

First thoughts - wholly Beefcake Batman! Talk about sweaty six packs galore. If I was a pole smoker I would be excited to say the least. However I did enjoy the gratuitous boobie / lesbosian shot from time to time to help rid the mind of the sausage festivus.

The show thus far is a mix of Gladiator (revenge dead wife) 300 (cinematics / blood spurts) and Braveheart (trying desperately to hold onto the bit of cloth a la William Wallace) whilst he is being beaten.

Dialogue with the gladiators is laughable at best-  I got tired of them all laughing each time a pleb was beat down/cut down etc etc.

I may give it another go - it helps pass the time before THE PACIFIC!!!

Great question Lettuce - I too have noticed as of late that there are a ton more rooms with lower level accounts out there. Even more now than I would have expected given the age of the title - I mean over Xmas there was bound to be a metric ton of n00bs out there. But now? Seems a little odd even if nothing more than a coincidence.

Finally played the demo yesterday evening and colour me impressed.

Sure this is God of War – but this time it is on the 360. I admit that I enjoyed hacking and slashing and some of the finishing moves etc etc.

I have to say that I was mightly impressed with the visuals – most notably the part when you are in the cathedral and the wall falls away from you – I was REALLY impressed with the detail and animation there. The visuals overall were really quite crisp and seemed to stand out on my TV.
I also enjoyed the part at the end of the demo when you can ride that big ‘Brumak’ looking thing.
I may make this a day one purchase.
