same exact thoughts I had last week when I came across this over at Blue's (I think).

Another thing that I noticed was that there is no save and quit option?

played a couple of matches with Hark, Kato and Fumble last night and it was fun. Still hate commando - but like I said before I am not good enough to get my tits in a knot over it  Roll Eyes

I am really looking forward to the next title in November - I have a GC from Ebgames sitting by the front door ready for use!
1004  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Castlevania: Lords of Shadow on: October 12, 2010, 01:33:00 PM
Played up until chapter 3 I think last night - my first real sitting with the game since I bought it.

The visuals are certainly stunning - the devs/art team really put all they could into this title and it shows  beautifully. As I was playing I was thinking about all the games that I would like to see in this type of setting - very nice stuff.

Combat is GoW - but hey I liked it then and I like it now - so I am satisfied. I do admit that I cannot remember ALL the possible combos so the pause button gets a ton of play from me so that I can go back to my travel book and re-learn.

One thing that I am not sure if I like is the level design where there are 2 paths - I am the type of gamer where I feel regret for not heading down path left instead of path right. I was more than a little confused when I got to the 'spider' level where there were 2 paths etc. But it all worked out in the end. I guess I can replay the levels later and try to remember to take the alternate paths - but who am I kidding Tongue

All in all - I am really liking the game. The absence of the castle is a little odd - but I am not going to knock the game for this.

Deep fried turkey is the best and Alton's brining is required. I recently bought an infra-red turkey fryer and didn't tell guests that it wasn't oil fried to see how they would react and they claim they couldn't tell. I couldn't tell the difference either and it's a heck of a lot easier and cheaper.

Does it still use propane as the fuel source? It looks to have the connector there.

I am pleased to report that all went as planned - there was no  fire, boil over or any property damage.

The bird was great - very moist and a great crispy skin.
I ended up using vegetable oil as 5gal of peanut oil would have run me over $50  eek

I will certainly do it again next year for Thanksgiving.

Thanks for all the tips.

We do this every year. Peanut oil works great. You can buy 'flavor injectors' in the store. I make my own flavor to inject, but I have had some pre-made that were pretty good.

WARNING: You said you know to lower the bird slowly, but even more important is to turn the heat source OFF first!

I am pretty sure that the one that I am using is electric. But great point should it not be.

Not sure if it is as important for deep frying as for turkeys cooked in a regular oven, but last year we brined our bird for the first time ever and could not believe we've gone this long without doing so.  The meat was an order of magnitude more flavorful and moist.  I don't see why it wouldn't further improve a deep fried bird as well.

We went with Alton Brown's brining recipe (quantities based on a 14 to 16 pound turkey, adjust as necessary for larger or smaller birds):

Quote
For the brine:
1 cup kosher salt
1/2 cup light brown sugar
1 gallon vegetable stock
1 tablespoon black peppercorns
1 1/2 teaspoons allspice berries
1 1/2 teaspoons chopped candied ginger
1 gallon heavily iced water

2 to 3 days before roasting:

Begin thawing the turkey in the refrigerator or in a cooler kept at 38 degrees F.

Combine the vegetable stock, salt, brown sugar, peppercorns, allspice berries, and candied ginger in a large stockpot over medium-high heat. Stir occasionally to dissolve solids and bring to a boil. Then remove the brine from the heat, cool to room temperature, and refrigerate.

Early on the day or the night before you'd like to eat:

Combine the brine, water and ice in the 5-gallon bucket (we used a cooler and then cloroxed it when finished). Place the thawed turkey (with innards removed) breast side down in brine. If necessary, weigh down the bird to ensure it is fully immersed, cover, and refrigerate or set in cool area for 8 to 16 hours, turning the bird once half way through brining.

My wife makes our turkey in an oven bag, and last year was the best turkey we've ever had.  From now on brining is a necessity for our prep.

nod Pete we did the same thing last year and agree %110 that the Turkey was amazing! I will certainly think about combining the two methods this year.
1011  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Deep fried turkey - looking for suggestions on oil / seasoning etc etc UPDATED on: October 04, 2010, 03:31:58 PM
Hi all,

I am going to deep fry one of our turkeys this year - having never done so before I thought I would reach out to ya'll on some tips.

1. what oils is best? I know that I need something with a high smoke point and they would be: corn, peanut or canola oils? Is one more flavourful than the other?
2. Seasoning the bird? Is this required? Won't the oil essentially burn off my dry seasoning?

And just to point out:

1. I will be doing this outside far away from any structures
2. Fire extinguisher on hand
3. I have watched copious amounts of video telling me to make sure that I SLOWLY lower the bird in.

Would love to hear from you guys.

Thanks in advance,
Roman

It really irritates me the whining and complaining that I've witnessed online about Netflix Canada's selection, or lack of.  People don't seem to get the fact that if you don't support a service like this in it's infancy then it will never grow.
I signed up as soon as I could.  I've recently cancelled cable TV, so 8 bucks a month is the same as renting 2 movies.  As a horror fan, I was pleasantly surprised at the decent selection they have right out of the gate.  The documentary selection is equally impressive.

I'm going to give it 6 months to improve.  If it doesn't, at least I've supported it and given it a chance.. I suggest all do the same.

I am interested to see what Zip.ca has up their sleeves.

A lot of us are on capped bandwidth internet provider (Cogeco). I have no use for a service that only allows streaming because I won't be able to take advantage of it. So until someone can do a mail delivery service properly in Canada then I'll continue to whine and complain.

JayDee - you and I are in the same boat and I am not impacted (yet). We have 2 Xbox Live accounts and use them A LOT. I also do a fair amount of downloading  ninja (purely research projects) and have not noticed and extra charges yet.

Thoughts?

Played through the 3rd sniper recon mission of the campaign (heroic) and I'm enjoying it thus far. So far there isn't anything particularly unique that's standing out about it, it's a Halo game I was expecting to play. The textures and models do look a little sharper IMHO but I'm seeing some weird motion blurring in the cutscenes.

Nice to fight along with some regular squad mates this time. I've stood around and observed some of the firefights and they've been effective in dispatching enemies on their own. I was afraid they would stand around just being shot at and waiting for me to flank around to mop up. Cool to see some of the personalities of your fellow Spartans as well. Hard to make out what Kat is saying in her radio transmissions because of her accent.

Maybe it wasn't as apparent to me as now or it's more pronounced, but the elites are a PITA to take out. They move fast and are such bullet sponges. Throw in a group of them, some with jet packs, and it starts to get hairy. Haven't run into many new UNSC vehicles and weapons yet - hoping to see some nice toys later on.

Gamertag - RoboSim

Agreed on all points with Spigot here. I noticed frame rate choppiness about 2mins in and was thinking  what the heck?

Kat is hard to understand - it sounds like she is taking a dump when she talks  icon_smile

Elites - yes I am also having some challenges - I was on Heroic but had to bump down the challenge one level. I know I'm a wimp.

Played just past the sniper level with 'Chekov' last night and it is good to see that the same Halo formula that sold me back in 2001 still holds true today.

MP was challenging to say the least. I miss the COD left trigger zoom and because of it I am always tossing at least one grenade per match when I don't mean to. retard
I find that the DMR is not very powerful.
I am trying to get used to all the jumping and grenade spam.

I did like one match where it was all snipers though.

So far I am happy with my purchase - this will hold me over until HoH and BlackOps comes out - just like Owain mentioned.
