1601  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / KOTOR 2 - anyone seen it yet? on: February 15, 2005, 08:55:54 PM
I’m currently about 16 hours into kotor2, and after an agonizingly slow start (peragus mining colony), the game has ramped up close to the original in terms of fun, interest, and addictive pull.  I really had to force myself to push forward during the first several hours with kotor2, taking breaks and coming back to it later.  Kotor started slow too, but for some reason I found its first world more interesting than kotor2’s running around a mining colony watching holo-vids and fighting droids for several hours.

I’m enjoying the cast of characters and their interaction with the main character more in kotor2 than kotor.  In the first game, with the exception of Bastilla, I didn’t really care about any of the character plot lines, and found them to be tedious at times (dreading when a character would pause and a dialogue exchange was about to start).  Playing the 2nd time through kotor as a dark side consular, I enjoyed telling most of the characters to shut the hell up and stop whining.  I haven’t felt that way with any of the characters in kotor2…yet.

I don’t understand Obsidian’s rational in having the player wait 14-16 hours before their character can wield a lightsaber.  In kotor I didn’t like it, but I understood that my character would rise up in a normal profession and then ultimately tap into their ability and memories as a jedi/sith.  I don’t understand why in kotor2 they waited so long to get a lightsaber in the hands of your character (who already is a jedi of substantial experience by that point).  I think my character was a lvl14 jedi guardian before he got his hands on a LS!  Just seems like an odd gameplay choice

After 16 hours into the game I do enjoy kotor2.  I’m not sure at this point where the plot is headed (I have a guess), but the story has been intriguing and interesting.  A lot of kotor2 is more of the same, but that’s not a bad thing imo.

I think it’s very cool that your character can identify jedi potential in his companions, and potentially take on the responsibility of a jedi master (even if they’re not officially a “jedi master” in title).  The romances are silly but fun too.  Without giving away any spoilers, there is one particular romance that involves “echani combat etiquette” that cracks me up every time it happens.  Kotor2 doesn’t have the same pull on me that Kotor did, the latter I completed in 2 all night marathon sessions.  But I still feel that draw to get back to the game, which is a good sign.  If you can get through the first 5 hours of kotor2, the game ramps up quickly.
1602  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Quick Mercenaries Question: on: February 09, 2005, 12:54:15 AM
I had the same problem, not sure if it's a bug or not.  I grabbed a helocopter and flew around the map until I found the last 2 cards on my own.  Not exactly the most targeted approach, but I only had the option of speaking with colonel also.

It's obvious that Troika has some very creative and gifted minds on their team, but over the past 5+ years they've really set the benchmark for releasing games that shine with potential but reek of sloppiness and poor quality control.  I enjoyed arcanum, TOEE (patched), and I've enjoyed bloodlines, all 3 of which were beaming with potential...and full of more bugs than you could imagine (game stopping ones in all 3).

They've also become very good at spinning their PR to blame everyone but themselves for their bug filled games.

That's the best part of this game, the feeling that you can complete contracts any and ever way imaginable.  I've had what I thought was a well thought out plan, only to have my apc or helo blown up, forcing me to get creative with the resources nearby.  Great game.

My wife loves Christian Slater's chick flick Bed of Roses, which for me is agonizing to watch.  Mary Stuart Masterson & CS?  She has to be pushing 4 foot 11 or 5 feet even considering she looked short next to CS, and he's small.  I did like Heathers though, and thought Tina Fey borrowed heavily from that movie for Mean Girls.

Speaking of stars in bad movies, has anyone seen the trailer or preview for the upcoming comedy with Cedric the Entertainer and Tommy Lee Jones?  WTH was TLJ thinking?  Maybe the movie will be surprisingly good, but from the preview it looked terrible.

1609  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Are Sudeki and Yager good bargain games? on: January 31, 2005, 10:12:19 PM
I'll echo Gratch's comments about Sudeki.  It's a short rpg, but it was fun while it lasted.  The ending is absurdly non-existent, and reminded me of action adventure console games from the 80s:

Final climatic battle followed immediately by...

"The End" {roll to credits}

It's worth $15 if you like party-based rpgs, with minimal story elements but decent combat.
1610  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Anyone getting bored with WOW? on: January 25, 2005, 11:14:58 PM
I'm still very much enjoying WoW.  If you're someone that likes trying out and playing alts (myself included), I'd recommend not churning through the exact same quests and zones as your first character.  The nice thing about WoW from lvls 1-30 (after getting 2 horde characers to 30+) is that your adventuring and leveling experiences can be very different with each character if you focus on different areas, quests and zones.

I could see where someone would get burned out if they did the same barrens, xroads, 1k needles quests 2-3 times with alts.  Move your new alt to silverpine and level up there.  Some areas I just don't like adventuring in, like Desolace, so I'll go to Stranglethorn Vale instead.  It's nice having options like that at those levels.
1611  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Vampire worth getting? on: January 24, 2005, 07:30:55 PM
I enjoyed the story, setting and rpg elements, but this is another example of good content and sloppy execution by Troika.

They’ve managed to take the source engine and turn it into a rig killer, bringing even high-end pcs to their knees.  Activision released a statement a few weeks after release that stated the game plays best at 800x600, and that you need to set your swap file to a certain size (forget what they recommended) to avoid large performance hits.  The game actually defaults to 800x600 at first load up, which was a red flag for me right from the start.  Unfortunately, on my rig the framerates have very little variance from 800x600 to max supported resolution.  I didn’t expect the graphics to be on par with HL2, but with worse graphics and less use of the more demanding graphics features, I would’ve thought the performance would be ok.  There are a lot of graphical glitches in game, including during the cutscenes!  You’d think they would at least get the cutscenes right.  In fact, the very first cutscene that introduces the story is buggy and often has characters floating across the floor, very noticeable clipping, and other unexplainable problems.

The sound is buggy too, to include an unbelievably annoying footstep effect that isn’t timed with the motion of your character.  I never could get EAX to work, and the hardware audio option can result in some major performance issues.  The lip synching can be bad too.

The combat system is so-so, with melee being much more effective than ranged combat.  The disciplines are all cool and fun to use, but some of the flashier ones can really bog down framerates (even with particle effects turned down).  Generally I enjoyed combat, but it definitely felt clunky at times.

The story was very cool, and I felt like my character was influencing the world around him.  Like I mentioned earlier, the rpg elements are good, but the quality of the coding and poor utilization of the source engine make for another defective gem from Troika.  That’s not to say you want have fun playing, I did, but it’s hard not to imagine how good the game could’ve been with no bugs, better optimization, and a cleaner combat system.
1612  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Mercenaries Impressions on: January 24, 2005, 06:22:32 PM
I tried calling in a bunker buster on one of the large respawn bunkers, and initially it looked like it had no effect.  About 3 seconds later after the huge shock wave, the bunker turned into rubble and my $ meter began rolling like crazy.  I missed how much I earned since I was so focused on the shock wave effect and seeing it crumble.  When I played again later in the day, that exact bunker was back in action like nothing ever happened.

The best equipment is normally in the faction restricted areas, although some new equipment won’t “open up” or appear until you start a scripted contract or get to a certain point in the game.  As you progress further into the game and capture or kill more cards, check back at the AN, CH and SK HQ zones, you may notice some surprises.

The statues just take some driving around and exploring to find.  Btw, they did a good job hiding some of the national treasures in really off the wall and remote places.
1613  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Mercenaries Impressions on: January 18, 2005, 09:22:43 PM
Since I don’t have a lot of patience with contracts that require a lot of subtlety and discretion, I’ve tanked my faction rep a few times already with the Chinese and South Koreans (you know, the missions where you’re not supposed to be seen blowing the crap out of their <insert targets>).  So far it hasn’t been too hard to raise faction rep back up by doing contracts for them and having their soldiers witness my dastardly deeds against the NKs.

As a general rule, the faction restricted zones (blue) seem to have the best equipment ripe for the borrowing.  Depending on what contracts you did, there are some pretty sweet vehicles and helicopters just waiting to be hijacked in those zones.  Not to mention statues to blow up and lots of goodies to grab.
1614  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Mercenaries Impressions on: January 17, 2005, 08:49:41 PM
I like the balance I've seen so far with the vehicles, aircraft and weapons.  Just when I think I'm unstoppable in a tank, I get blown apart by 2 grunts with rpgs, or a helicopter turns my tank into scrap metal.  Anti-air is nasty in this game too, so flying around can be dicey.  I have my preferences for weapons, but I haven't found 1 that was much better than the rest.  I like being able to change my loadout on the fly with supply drops.

So it looks like you can have 1 vehicle parked at each faction HQ...good to know.
1615  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Mercenaries Impressions on: January 17, 2005, 06:21:08 PM
I love it when a game comes out of nowhere, with minimal hype, and ends up being as good as Mercenaries.

Some fun things I've done so far:

- Grab the large helicopter (not sure if the scout helicopters can do this) just outside the AN base to the SW, and fly around jacking vehicles.  Drop the vehicle from the wench at the mafia chop shop garage door, land on the roof, and run down and drive the vehicle in the garage for $.

- Fill up a transport with a multi-national task force.  I like to grab a few people from each faction and drive around looking for trouble.  We then all jump out and assault together as a well organized multi-national task force.

- You can snipe the pilots of helicopters pretty easy with the sniper rifle.  If the helo is not too high off the ground, it will drop straight down and you have a free helo!  If it's too high, it will spin out of control and crash.

- Grab a tank or bmp, find a bunker spawn point, and blow away anything that dares to exit the bunker or tunnel.  Sometimes vehicles will continue to pour out for a nice string of $$ until the tunnel blows up.

I wish there were parking lots where you could save your best vehicles (like the garages in GTA).  I know you can save 1 vehicle by getting out and talking with a faction guard, but I'm not sure if that vehicle will still be in their lot if I grab another vehicle and speak to a different faction guard.  Anyone try this yet?

The anime style of portraying teenage and adult characters as little kids, in kid-like bodies, is a cultural gap in artistic expression that I just can’t get past.  It’s even creepier for me when the characters are dressed in clothes meant to be sexy or revealing.  The game looks interesting, but the art style...kiddie anime creepy.

A rogue - druid combo would be nasty in pvp.  I have a druid that's spec'd mainly feral, has max stealth, and has feline swiftness, and I have no problem keeping up with friendly rogues while stealthed.  Druids also get track humanoid while in cat form.  Having someone that can stealth with you that has decent dps in cat form, heals, rez when needed, provides mark of the wild buff (which has +resists at higher lvls), roots, can put hunter pets to sleep, and that has a decent ranged attack, I'd vote for that smile

Edited:  forgot to mention that druids in cheetah form can chase most classes down that don't have mounts.
1620  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / WoW: The Death Penalty on: January 02, 2005, 09:18:41 PM
I agree.  I can't stand the idea of going into exp debt, or losing exp, or even losing a level!  In WoW the penalty is just bad enough that I do whatever it takes to stay alive or keep others alive (I think gamer's pride factors into that as well).  Sometimes the ghost runs in WoW can be a real pita if the graveyard is far away, but I'd take that over any form of exp dept/loss anyday.  And they give the option to just say screw it and rez at the graveyard, which I've done a few times.  I think Blizz had done a good job of keeping their sights on making WoW fun.  And if the death penalty is not harsh enough for some people, there's always EQ2 and FFXI to enjoy.
1621  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / WoW: Professions on: December 31, 2004, 04:19:41 PM
If you play a class that has buffs and healing, alchemy may be redundant, although the healing potions are always nice to have.  Engineering has some great utility items for soloists.  The downside to engineering is that some of the more player friendly items (like goggles) can only be worn by other engineers, so you lose some $ earning potential.  Dropping a target dummy or an advanced target dummy has saved my butt many times.  How many times have you worked through a solo quest only to get to the boss who's protected by 2-3 guards?  Just drop a target dummy before you pull, and they'll start whacking on the dummy while you take out the boss.  Some of the bombs are actually pretty good too.  Eventually you can make pets that can be "summoned" to help you for a limited duration.  And then there's the completely useless but hug-inducing mechanical squirrel, which is really the biggest boon of the engineering line smile
1622  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / How many of you play opposite gender characters in MMORGS? on: December 17, 2004, 09:25:41 PM
I don't think it matters at all on the regular servers.  Most people don't roleplay their gender/character anyway.  But then if you're looking for romance by flirting up female avatars on a RP server (heck any server), you've opened that can of worms yourself.  I've known several women that tried to play female characters in other mmorpgs, but were so tired of trying to convince other players they were really women that they happily only play male characters now.  So that badass orc warrior who you've been fighting with the last couple of weeks may actually be a mother of 2!:P
1623  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Best WoW solo class on: December 15, 2004, 09:53:30 PM
The class concept for hunters, and how Blizz executed that concept in game, makes for a very fun class.  If they weren’t the most popular I’d be very surprised.  What’s not to like about being able to solo very well, grabbing pretty much any beast type pet you want, being able to dish out good damage, and naming and developing your pets.  I think blizz did a great job following through on the concept for hunters.  On the other hand, warlocks should be a blast to play based on the concept, but that doesn’t seem to be the case.  Based on concept alone, I would’ve thought warlocks would be one of the more popular classes.  I play a druid, and they’re a tremendously fun and flexible class, but seem to be one of the least popular (racial restrictions could be partly responsible for the lower popularity).

1625  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Need some opinions on Spellforce on: December 14, 2004, 10:12:16 PM
I put a lot of time into spellforce, and ultimately it lost it's hold on me due to the really slow pacing of the maps and the sheer length of the game.  You'd think that a long game would = better value and bang for the buck, but I just couldn't stay focused.  It absolutely does not lend itself to relatively short 1 hour gaming sessions, as many of the maps can take 2-4 hours to clear all the objectives (and even more if you want to finish all the quests).  Considering there are a lot of maps, this is a long game.

If you have the time, focus and commitment to play this one through, and aren't easily distracted like me, it might be a good purchase for you.

Wow...that was profoundly ignorant and juvenile.

Sorry, it needs to be said.

I've tried RP servers in other mmorpgs, and could never get into them.  I prefer just to talk normal and play the game.  I don't want to put forth the effort of playing in character 100% of the time.  With that said, the communities seemed great, people were all very cool, I'm not sure how many of them were gay or not, but that didn't seem to have any impact on the game.
1627  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / WoW: Many nice players amongst some idiots on: December 13, 2004, 09:28:05 PM
Quick example:

Today during lunch I was running through Ashenvale with my tauren druid when a lvl31 NE rogue asks to duel.  I thought, why not, he's only 2 lvls higher than me.  We had a great fight that lasted almost 2 minutes, with both of us down to a miniscule sliver of health.  I ended up going down.  The NE after winning cheered me, clapped, and then bowed after the duel.

There are some knuckleheads on the regular servers, but I have many more experiences like the one above than I do negative examples.

On a side note, I love how pvp fights aren't over in 5 seconds like in daoc, they actually can last for quite some time before people start dropping.  The pacing of the fights seems fast, but the longevity of the character lives feels just right.
1628  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Best WoW solo class on: December 13, 2004, 09:07:00 PM
Druids are great solo.  They are very flexible, which makes them well suited for soloing.  You could focus on being a ranged/caster, a healer, or better at the feral forms (or any combination of those 3).  But no matter how you spend talent points, druids imo are excellent soloists.
1629  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Good/bad of WoW being on PvP vs PvE servers? on: December 10, 2004, 07:58:35 PM
PvP fights happen all the time on Whisperwind, which is a “normal” server.  It’s mostly all permissive PvP.  I say mostly because you can get someone to flag themselves for PvP if they aren’t paying attention to what they’re doing.  There’s no shortage of NEs in Ashenvale that are eager to PvP, and they make that clear when they stand near you hoping you’ll trigger an AoE attack or debuff that will hit them and flag you.  Plus, on any given night there’s always fighting going down near Zoram Strand or Splintertree.  If you’re a friendly druid, shaman or priest that happens to be running by and you decide to throw a heal on someone who’s flagged pvp, you’re now in the mix!  Normally all it takes is a few rude gestures or taunts, and then people flag themselves and it’s game on.  I’m thankful I’m on a “normal” server, since I’ve already run into a handful of idiots that are 10+ lvls higher than me trying to get me to “pull the trigger” against them.  I can’t imagine how frustrated I’d be to get ganked by those clowns on a pvp server.

You’d be surprised, people are more than willing and even very eager to pvp on the normal servers, they just don’t want to deal with some of the bs that happens on pure pvp servers.
1630  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Regarding "Stealth" in WoW on: December 10, 2004, 06:31:34 PM
If you like playing a rogue, but suffer from alt-itis, druids are a fun class.  Druids can shapeshift into Cat form, which allows for some of the same abilities as a rogue (stealth, positional attacks, combos, dash, very fast attacks).  You’ll also get humanoid tracking while in cat form similar to what hunters get, which allows you to hunt down npcs or players.  In groups I’m almost always the healer, but for solo stuff I love tearing things up in cat form.  You’ll never be as good as a rogue at all of the roguish abilities (which is how it should be), but you can certainly have just as much fun.

This is what I understood from the psychic subplot:

- for whatever reason, this psychic thinks her future child is going to be satan jr, or at least a very eeevil kid.

- he initially got rid of her because what he saw freaked him out

- my impression of him trying to help her to meet the "good family" in LA was his way of getting her on a plane that he knew would crash...killing her and the future sith lord.

- the psychic didn't foresee that there would be survivors (if they are in fact survivors), or he underestimated the unborn powers of the sith lord.

The episode next week looks like a good one!  Oh and the dude that dumped the aussie girl...insane.  Who cares about the pressures of impending fatherhood when you get to come home to her everyday!  That's the only part last night when I had to suspend my disbelief. smile

While it's not a cloth map (I do remember that one!), the included map is much nicer than most of the cheap stuff that comes with games now.  The paper is heavier, and the map is colored to look like an old treasure map...nice touch considering games are now starting to ship without manuals.

It could be that I still play Pirates! to this day but I found that I could devistate a Spanish War galleon with a Sloop.  Maybe the difficulty level will rise as I play but it didn't take long before I was the top dog on the pirateyness list and I had purchased most items twice.

The first 3 difficulty levels range from really easy to easy.  After you start your first game, you can go back and start a new game and select: difficulty level, skill, and time period right from the start.  I'd suggest starting a game at rogue captain or swashbuckler for a challenge.

At rogue or swashbuckler difficulty, a faster and more maneuverable 12 gun escort swoop controlled by the AI can tear up your slower moving flag galleon if you're not carefull.  Try fighting against 2 sloops at once with a lumbering galleon.  The 2 best ships I've found that have a nice balance of firepower (40 guns), crew size, and speed are the Large Frigate and of course the Ship of the Line.

I put a bunch more hours into it, and this thing's still really easy.  I'm on the third difficulty level, and so far I've taken out half of the top ten pirates list, including the top five, without even trying hard.  I think this crew's almost had it, so I'll be moving up to another difficulty level, and maybe it'll get hard then.  I still like it, but I miss the feeling that Sea Dogs gave me when I came upon a ship I knew outclassed me, and being really nervous that I wouldn't be able to get out of reach of her guns before she ripped me apart.  In Pirates, I can pretty much take on anything and win with no trouble.

I don't think it starts to get challenging until the 4th difficulty level.  On "Rogue Captain" level it's not terribly hard, but it's a noticable ramp up in diffculty.  The AI ship captains are much better at that level, which makes the ship battles exciting and more fun imo.  Swordplay is harder, finding treasure and quest locations is tougher without the nice land maps, crew morale gets bad much quicker if you're not pulling in new loot frequently.
1635  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Sid Meier's Pirates Impressions? on: November 25, 2004, 08:32:40 PM
I didn't start feeling challenged consistently until I accepted "Rogue Captain" difficulty at my last divide plunder.  I did a campaign of about 13 months at Rogue difficulty, and let me tell you, it makes a world of difference!  Some of the changes at Rogue level:

- No convenient land maps with landmarks for finding quest locations and treasures.  I don't remember if this went away at adventure level, but it makes things a little more difficult (and frustrating).  You still can reference the treasure or quest map, but when you select map while on land, it will just show the entire land mass without all of the helpful landmarks.

- Ship captains are significantly more capable at sailing and using their special canon shots during sea battles.  You probably won't look at a sloop of war as easy prey ever again.

- Dueling becomes much harder, and you can no longer just spam attack buttons and consistently win.  I had my first losses against Blackbeard and the baron at this level.  The keypad flashing help is gone.

- Dancing is a little harder, but mainly because you have to watch her hands since the keypad flashing help is gone.

- Crew morale goes south much faster.

- Attacking towns is still pretty easy, I don't think that's one of the shining hallmarks of this game.  You can still split off a small group, keep the main enemy force engaged, and then send your small group to the gates.

- My pirate is 30 years old, and he's already been downgraded to fair health!  What happened to all the old, crusty pirates still being badasses?

- The plunder split is very nice at rogue captain level.

- The wind and weather effects seem to impact your sailing more at this level.

- Don't expect to sail into a 2 ship fight with your flagship and steamroll them like in the other difficulty levels.  The small, fast sloops of war will sail around you hammering you with their 12 guns, while the merchant ship will hang off and fire away at you.  It's still definitely doable, it's just not the cakewalk it was at the lower levels.

I played until about 4am last night, this is another Sid game that makes me completely lose track of time.

i am really early in this game, but I am stumped on the Werewolf Blood quest.  I need to passkey to get into the safe.  I know the clue was something vague " Its the number of Malcolm's dirty little secret" , but for the life of me after snooping thru Malcolm's PC I can't figure this out.  So can someone spoil me...please?

How good is your hacking?  There's a computer in a room on the other side of the floor that has a menu option to unlock the CS (Controlled Substances)  Door and unlock the CS Safe.  Keep in mind that once you hack the safe, the security camera will turn on for the CS room.  You'll need to run into the securty room right next to the CS room and disable Camera 1.

If I can remember the actual passwords to hack the CS menu, I'll post them.  For some reason I think it might be "Paige", but I could be thinking of another password. Either way, that's the quickest way I was able to get to the werewolf blood. I think that computer requires a hack skill check of 4 or maybe 5.
1637  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines Impressions on: November 24, 2004, 07:02:41 PM
As far as ranking the clans by difficulty, I think nosferatu would be considered advanced due to the masquerade limitations.  They do have a nice mix of disciplines though.

I would also consider venture as one of the best all around choices since they have the potential to have a good mix of social, combat and discipline powers.
1638  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Sid Meier's Pirates Impressions? on: November 24, 2004, 05:32:59 PM
I played for several hours last night, and it’s very reminiscent of the original.  Nothing is really exceptional or ground breaking, but like most of Sid’s games, it’s the sum of the parts that makes for an addictively fun game.  Some quick bullet points:

-   There doesn’t seem to be a menu option to select the difficulty level.  As far as I can tell, you start as an apprentice captain, and through your adventures (fame, quests completed, pirate rank, etc…) you’ll be given the option to move up to a higher level captain when you “split the loot.”  I think I split the loot 2 times before I was given the option to move up to journeyman captain.  Your cut of the loot % also goes up as your difficulty rank goes up (as an apprentice capt you only get 5% of the loot split).

-   The sim language that everyone speaks is a little goofy.  It would’ve been cool if they hired voice talent to do authentic accents for the 4 main nations (Dutch, French, English, Spanish).  And how could you pass up the opportunity to do pirate voices for the pirates!?  I don’t mind reading narrative and dialogue (Planescape anyone?), but it’s almost an expectation now to have spoken dialogue…or at least spoken narrative.

-   The ship to ship combat is fun and arcadey, and clearly not meant to be a Sea Dogs clone.  There’s enough depth where you can use all the different types of cannon shot to damage the ship, destroy the sails, and kill the crew.  Wind and weather play a role, but again, don’t expect Sea Dogs2.  Even though you can have an entire armada of captured ships, you can only fight with your flagship.  Although if you jump a merchant ship that has an escort, you’ll be fighting both ships with your lone flagship.  It would’ve been great if my 2 other 32 gun war galleys would join in the fight.

-   The romance part of the game is pretty much just like the original, with the addition of the ballroom dancing mini-game.  The better looking the woman, the harder the dancing is going to be.  It’s not an easy mini-game, and takes awhile to get used to watching the hand gestures and/or flashing keystroke hints.  The governor daughters are tiered based on looks, just like the original.  There seems to be 10 ranks of romance escalation before you’ll be able to propose. Those 10 ranks or steps will include successful ballroom dances, gifts, and duels with fiancés or other love interest.  In return, the girls will give you valuable information about quests, or they may even give you a gift.

-   The swordplay is really easy at the apprentice level, and even includes flashing keystrokes to help you manage your defense.  Some of the duels have actually started becoming a little challenging at Journeyman level, but it’s still easy to ram into a much larger ship with a larger crew and kick the captain’s butt, thus ending the engagement in your favor.  The duels are fun though, and do a good job of capturing that Errol Flynn swashbuckling feel.  I’m looking forward to seeing how the duels are at higher captain levels.

-   You now have basically a year to 14 months to take a crew out to sea and campaign.  Around 13 months or so the men will start getting pissed and want to return home.  You can be a heartless captain and use that opportunity to throw the men at an installation you want to take over, or you can take them home and “split the loot.”  At this point, your men will be dismissed, the loot will be split, but you will keep your flagship and any key staff that you’ve acquired along the way.  You’ll also be given the option to quit the story completely, to continue, or to move up to the next captain level.  You’ll then go through the process of recruiting a new crew and heading back out to sea.  The new crew will start with happy morale.  The longest I had a crew out campaigning was 19 months…they were pissed!!  I used them at the end as fodder to attack a town.  The crew size diminished greatly, and the lone survivors were “very happy.”

-     There’s no tutorial, unless I’m just not seeing that option.  Even though the game is very easy to pick up and figure out, a tutorial would’ve been nice.

-   I think there are a few quest bugs.  Nothing I’ve encountered that’s a game breaker, but I’ve hunted and defeated the same baron who supposedly knows where my family is 4 times now.  Each time I defeat him I get a new piece of the find my sister map.  It’s weird though because the folks giving me the tips on his whereabouts act like I’ve never heard of him, even though I’ve sent him to the ocean floor 4 times.

-   You can make good $ trading, but I haven’t had the patience to figure out the trade routes yet.  I mainly just travel up and down the islands fighting ships and then selling off the cargo and ships…while working on quests.

-   At apprentice and journeymen levels the governors and towns seem a little too forgiving of my past deeds.  I’ve sunk and captured lots of Spanish and French ships, yet I’m still a major in the Spanish navy and an admiral in the French navy lol.  When I see their governors they tell me how upset they are at my asskicking of their ships, and even mention specifically the ships I captured or sank, but they never do anything.  I’m a count in the English navy (I love the made up ranks…colonel in the navy? Hehe).

-   It was a fun diversion last night while I waited for my 170th spot on the WoW server line to open up.

Great tip on the graveyard Fafhrd.  I suspected that killing them was making them respawn.  Running around just grabbing aggro worked well.

Does the cemetary quest ever timeout/disappear or can I go back and do it at any point in the game?  I got bored of trying and failing at this juncture and thought I'd come back later...

Thanks.

I'm not sure, but I stopped trying after about 5 failed attempts.  I don't know what the answer is to that quest, maybe having a character that has celerity or is great with guns?  Maybe a tremere with the aoe blood attack would do well too.  My ventrue just couldn't do it.  The closest I came was about 10 seconds away from the countdown end.
