I'm rather surprised, it seems the Blues didn't bother to show up for the playoffs and their powerplay is terribad.  How many 5 on 3's did they blow?  They remind me a lot of.... the Sharks!  Losing both home games to the Ducks has GOT to sting.  Enjoy facing Chicago, Canucks fans.  They're about to dismantle one Western Canadian team and may repeat the performance.  That would leave the Wings with Anaheim, a matchup that would be tough on us physically, but not one that scares me.  The Wings have definitely turned it on for the playoffs, but I think they still have another gear or two they can switch to.  The Blue Jackets aren't going to bring out their best.

Sting? It feels like I got punched. That was brutal. I guess the Sharks lost their powerplay somewhere. 0-6 in two consecutive games? Yeah, we deserve to be down two games. What sucks is that even if the Sharks do get their act together, it looks more and more like the Canucks and the Wings will cruise into round two. The Blues just had to win that last game and shoot up to 6th, didn't they?

Like Carolina didn't even show up. Beaten to every puck and run over when they did get it.

Maybe the Devils are good again? confused

I hope not. I have the Canes going all the way out of the East in The Meal's tourney. Your Devils are making me feel a little shaky about my entry now, though.

The West is going to be ridiculous next year. The Wings with Hossa, Stars with Avery and, if it happens, Sundin with the Canucks. That would make for some interesting games. On my end, the Sharks got Rob Blake and Dan Boyle, which helps soften the loss of Campbell. If Marleau regains his game and our new coach rights the ship, I think we'll take the Pacific again. The Wings are going to be damn tough though.

I realized before I went to bed that I should have posted more info, like the fact that it's a 95 Honda Civic with an automatic transmission that's probably badly in need of a tuneup and maintenance check.

But thanks for the suggestions. I'll check out the transmission fluid (hoping it just needs to be topped off or changed out) and then work my way from there. Looks like I'll be spending that stimulus check sooner than I thought?
16  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Let's play "What's Wrong With That Car?" on: May 21, 2008, 05:30:57 AM
So my car's been acting up and before I take it into the shop, I thought I'd turn to this board's collective wisdom in the hopes that I can at least know what I'm getting into before I hand the keys over to my mechanic (who's my brother's friend's father, so he probably won't try to screw me--I hope).

Lately, when I'm driving, my engine will "slip" a little, meaning the car stops accelerating, the engine suddenly revs and then the power suddenly reshifts back to the car and acceleration resumes as normal.  I hope that makes sense. Basically, when I'm stepping on the gas, the car will accelerate normally; it feels like the power is going where it should. Then it suddenly "slips" and the car loses power and the engine just revs, like it would if I were idling. Then it goes back and I can keep accelerating.

Anyone have any idea what the heck's going on or what part of my car is probably the culprit? TIA.

Yikes. Could this be a Wings sweep in the making? 6:10 left and the Stars look done. It makes me wonder how the Sharks would have fared against the Wings. They might've gotten dismantled too. Wings are making it look effortless, which I didn't expect against a tough Stars team.

Amazing game and series though.

Outside of the Sharks winning game 6 and forcing game 7, that was the best possible end result you could have asked for. After digging themselves a grave by going 0-3 in the first 3 games, they clawed their way back, staved off elimination and played their guts out. That's the passion and grit I wanted out of my team. I think the Sharks proved something to their fans, the rest of the NHL and each other, which is important for next year. I'm seriously proud of them.

And you have to hand it to the Stars. They played great and they're moving on, so good luck the rest of the way. Detroit's looking sick so it's going to be a tough test. As for me, I'm rooting for the Pens the rest of the way.

Might still be too little too late but damn, I'm proud of our boys. Game 6 is going to be one hell of a test but I have faith that we can make a game out of it. Even if we lose, we showed some resolve, which is a great step forward.

And down go the Habs. As if my playoff predictions for Meal's contest wasn't in enough of a shambles. I still can't believe I took the Sens over the Pens. Damn it.

Granted, Colorado was pretty depleted this series, but the Wings were absolutely dominant.  Anytime the Avs started to spark a little momentum, Detroit just grabbed it away from them.  This is a team firing on all cylinders: 5v5, power play, penalty kill, forwards, defense, goalie, coaching.  The only weakness on the entire team is their third defense pairing, and even that is often more mediocre than weak.  Barring some crazy injuries, I honestly can't see any of the seven remaining teams pulling out 4 victories over Detroit.  Their skill is sky-high as always, they're overflowing with confidence, and their supposed perennial weakness, physical play, I think is actually a strength.

8-2!!!!!!!  icon_biggrin icon_biggrin icon_biggrin
I got a kick out of the radio announcers (was late getting to the bar last night to watch the game) saying that Lindstrom has yet to be credited with a single hit this postseason. icon_lol

Combined with the graphic they put up showing how badly the Wings were dominating the Avs in the game, hits included, he does not need to hit anyone. icon_biggrin

Seriously. Who cares if he's not hitting anyone? The man's sitting at +40 in the regular season. He's a defensive stud who can score; so what if he's not blowing anyone up like (Celine) Dion Pahnoof?

As for the Red Wings, all I can say is wow. The phrase "well oiled machine" comes to mind. There was never a moment in that last game where I felt like they were rattled or were off their game. Even when the Avs brought pressure, they looked calm and collected. They weathered the storm, grabbed the puck and skated it out. They're seriously playing great hockey right now. And someone find out kind of cereal Franzen is eating for breakfast so the Sharks can buy a few boxes.

I just got back from the Dallas game and that was the most aggravated that I have been in a long time..  mad  Dallas played like absolute crap.  Passing was horrible, stick handling was lousy, shots being fanned on left and right.  This marks the second time in the series that Turco has been scored on because of a stupid turnover.

I have no doubt that Dallas will win the series, but they like playing the Cardiac Kids and coming back in the third period too much for my liking.  I don't see them getting past Detroit unless they turn their early playing around.

Your team gave you three great gritty efforts the previous nights. You had to see this coming. Sharks were desperate and the Stars were sitting on a 3-game cushion. I think they can be forgiven for losing this game. Stars are still pressuring well and playing well. Sharks escaped with a win. Not like they went in and kicked the doors down.

I wouldn't start looking forward to the Wings just yet but if they continue to play their brand of hockey, I think they'll match up well against the Wings.

It was good to see the Sharks show some passion though. About freaking time.

I think the Rangers will steal at least one but the Pens are looking deadly. You're lucky though. My team's on the receiving end of a possible sweep. Sharks just look tired and uninterested. Stars are playing fantastic hockey as well.

But until the last seconds of the last game tick away, what can I do but believe that the Sharks can win 4 straight and sweep out the Stars in the remaining games? It'll start with Game 4. Let's go Sharks!

Best stat of the night:

Brad Richards: 4 points(3 assists)
Jason Kidd: 3 points, 3 assists

Tells you all you need to know about how those teams' respective playoff series are going.

I am absolutely floored by this Stars team.   After this franchise's recent history(losing to lower seeds the last 3 years...all of those in the 1st round) and the horrific March they had(earned a total of 8 points in the entire stinkin month), there was no way Id have picked them to beat me and 5 of my buddies at broomball, let alone the defending champs.   And now they're up 2-0 on one of the most talented teams in the league.  Crazy.

It's not that surprising. Turco's gotten the monkey off his back and is playing Conn Smythe quality goal. Modano's always been deadly against the Sharks and the bounces are definitely going their way. It's that old saying: good to be lucky, lucky to be good and the Stars have been both good and lucky.

Sharks are falling all over themselves. There were disasterous giveaways and guys were fighting the puck as much as they were fighting themselves. I know we have what it takes to come back though. Game 3 will be critical. If we lose that, the series is pretty much out of our hands. But I have faith that we can get it done, steal two on enemy ice and regain home ice.

Damn, now you've gotten me all intrigued on this safety razor stuff. Can I ask a question though? How do you know when the blades need replacing? I have really light facial hair (damn my Asian genes) but what I can grow grows fast enough that I have to shave every two days, just to avoid looking stupid. I'm guessing I'll probably get a bit more use out of the razor blade than those of you with thicker hair but will I just know that my blades need to be changed?

And color me completely ignorant but before I go rubbing a sharp blade across my face, I want to make sure: I buy the safety razor, lather up with that Shaving Oil someone mentioned, shave (against the grain? with?) and rinse off and that's it right?

And before you ask, I am not a 15 year old who just grew his first facial hair, even though I sound like it in this post... icon_biggrin

I don't think the Sharks outplayed the Flames night in and night out. If anything the Flames outplayed us on several occasions. They were a great first round test for the Sharks and I'm glad they passed. A lot of people said that the Flames were a great first round matchup simply for that reason: if they Sharks got over, they would do it after paying the price.

I think this series toughened us up mentally and physically. I applaud the Flames: great organization, great team, terrific fans. Now, onto the hated Stars.

Oh, and what an effort by Ovechkin this entire series. He'll get his Cup sooner or later. They just need to give him some more pieces to work with.
