We just finished the first episode (A New Hope) and have moved onto Return of the Jedi. Still loving the heck out of the game, although there are definately some issues with the controls. A lot of times we get stuck because we think we've tried everything in the room, just to find out we weren't precisely aligned with an access point (or whatever you call those little spots that require C3PO or R2DR to open). Other than that, we're loving the humor, the combat, the puzzles, and I am particularly loving the humorous take on the storyline.
4603  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Dragon Quest IX on the DS?(confirmed) on: May 11, 2007, 11:53:57 PM
I don't see how this coming to a portable as opposed to one of the next-gen systems is a good thing from a purely entertainment standpoint. It is probably going to be shorter than a console version would be, the graphics are obviously going to poor in comparison, and you have to deal with the discomfort that comes with long periods of gameplay on a portable. I see it as a positive thing for those who only own a DS and were planning to buy whichever console it may have landed on, but otherwise I'd be pretty disappointed if a franchise I loved was getting relegated to portable status.

I played Rygar on the PS2, and actually I won my copy at E3 the year it came out. You know those contraptions where you have a rubber sledge-hammer and you hit a pod which shoots a ball up a spine-like thingy that dings a bell if you hit it right? I have no idea what that thing is called, but I won a copy for myself and my friend that year. Oh how I miss E3  tear

Well...according to a friend of mine that's a statistician for the Insurance industry; the majority of auto accidents are caused by males between the ages of 16 - 25. Apparently this statistic is consistent throughout North America.

Yeah, that makes sense actually. Second highest is women though right?  icon_twisted Oh come on, just say it!!
4607  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Japan sales 4/30 - 5/06 (wow!) on: May 11, 2007, 06:30:34 AM
Japan proved to be one of the main reasons Sony dominated so well last two generations, and why Nintendo was so big prior to that, but now that their tastes don't align with your tastes, they're not as relevant? Right.

All I'm saying is, Japan is proving to be only capable of supporting one console per generation. Last generation it was Sony, this generation it looks like Nintendo (at least until the PS3 software starts taking off). On the other hand, North America doesn't have a big problem with all three major platforms holding a nice slice of pie, and Europe also has proven to be a market that can support at least two major platforms. If I were a game company, I'd definately be aiming at the more open-minded regions.
4608  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Starcraft 2 confirmed (finally)? on: May 10, 2007, 05:36:33 PM
I think people are over-estimating the popularity of Starcraft in the light of Warcraft. People are NOT going to abandon their characters in WoW just to play in the Starcraft universe, and people won't split their time, at least not the serious players. I think it is ridiculous that Blizzard would want to have two MMO's out on the market. I mean, what's next a Diablo MMO? Come on Blizz, stop selling out on us.

4610  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: How many generations until Gamestop is out of business? on: May 10, 2007, 05:27:23 PM
I absolutely believe that within 1-2 generations we'll be buying all our games via digital distribution. I think we'll see something similar to music where a lot of the brick and mortar stores have begun closing down, music sections shrinking, and digital distribution programs expand. The only difference in video games and music is the size of the downloads. Once download speeds pick up and the hard drives are MUCH larger (we're talking terraflops here or whatever 1000 gigs are) we'll be right there.

Oh and I don't think GameStop will go out of business, they'll just restructure.

Nothing official, but it only makes fiscal sense.  I'd be shocked if they didn't ship simultaneously or pretty damned close to it for 360 and PC with PS3 pulling up the rear a few months later.

Exactly, we'll probably see a release similar to Oblivion except a shorter gap between the 360/PC and the PS3 versions, if not a simultaneous release.
4612  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Lego Star Wars: the true noob-friendly game on: May 10, 2007, 03:43:24 AM
I know there are games out there that help bring non-gamers into the gaming scene pretty well. Usually they fall into an "alternative" genre such as Dance Dance Revolution, Guitar Hero, and even Wii Sports which I consider interactive entertainment rather than a video game in the traditional sense. That being said (basically what I'm saying is, aside from the above listed games), Lego Star Wars has to be one of the best games available to bring in those who don't normally play video games. My girlfriend and I played for more than 3 hours today and she loved it, usually she loses interest in a game within half an hour but she really loved this one and tried to plan for another night to play. The game is very simple and fun, and anyone who has seen the Star Wars movies will appreciate the humor. I'm even surprised at how much I enjoy the graphics, which are beautiful in their own simplistic way. So anyhow, big thumbs up to a noob-friendly coop game  thumbsup

4617  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Next gen-worth it? on: May 09, 2007, 12:47:58 AM
I have to disagree slightly with ATB. It's true that you can't benefit fully from the new consoles without an HDTV, however the games still look much better than what the PS2/GC/Xbox generation has to offer and not to mention there are some really good games out there. If there are any games you are interested, don't let not having an HDTV hold you back.

I'm not a big fan of the Spiderman movies, I don't get excited when they come out whatsoever, but I do enjoy catching midnight releases and a friend of mine was excited for it so I ended up seeing it. The movie as a whole wasn't too bad, but good lord a few parts were horrible. I don't understand why people like Sam Raimi, the guy is utterly devoid of talent from what I've seen so far. Even the actors weren't thrilled about the movie and they hardly hide it in the interviews.

I read through the GT review and decided I will definately buy the game. Then I read the IGN review and this particular blurb hit me: "Anyone hoping that Spider-Man 3 the videogame somehow enhances the feature film will be sorely disappointed". That was my whole reason for wanting the game really, so I'm leaning towards passing now. IGN is also knocking the graphics which to be honest I was already worried about from watching the trailers. I await the impressions of our forum members.

I don't understand why Nintendo still sell the DS - I always grimace when i'm in the game store overhearing people tossing up between the lite and the original. There really is no competition but to th ecasual observer they seem to similar to be worth the extra.

They still sell the original DS because they are still stocked up at stores, I highly doubt they are still producing them. It was funny, back when I was managing a GameStop and EB Games, every store in the district was loaded with used traded in DS systems and the suckers would NOT sell. If I was GameStop/EB I wouldn't even take them back for trade-in anymore with the Lite out.

As far as the game goes, Red Faction did this one the PS2 over five years ago. I absolutely love how developers try to take old features, add some new bells and whistles, and call it something new and exciting.

Nah, I made an alt with an inappropriate name for like the third time and apparently the third action is the 3-day ban. Warning -> 3 hour ban -> 72 hour ban. I can't help it, when I'm drunk I can't think of any names besides inappropriate ones. I just need to stop rolling alts while intoxicated.

Well, I tried to like the game but it just wouldn't click for me. I kept getting caught by enemy patrol, mainly because of the crummy camera keeping them out of my view. The sneak mechanic is also very robotic and sluggish as well, not fluid whatsoever. Ah well, I've never been a fan of the MGS series anyhow.
4640  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / F.E.A.R is not a factor for me! *spoilers* on: May 02, 2007, 01:51:11 AM
So, I took the opportunity to play through F.E.A.R while my WoW account is on a 72 hour ban ( crybaby). I was worried because of the complaints about repetitive environments and poor level design, I thought for sure I would be one of the people who gave up half way through out of boredom. However, the gameplay deserves all the acclaim it has received and the slo-mo effect is simply amazing, I've never had so much killing people in a shooter before, seriously. Every kill felt satisfying, and I'm quite sure this game has the best shotgun EVAR! Decapitation, limbs flying, clouds of blood... I was in gore heaven. I wish ammo wasn't as sparse for pretty much every weapon aside from the shotgun though, some of them got barely any attention from me. I also enjoyed the sound effects, the distortion of the sound when going between normal and slo-motion is great, it was awesome running up on an enemy and hearing them scream "FUUUUUUCK!" in slow-mo.

The thing I loved the most about F.E.A.R though was the creepy Grudge-esque story. Although the game isn't quite scary in terms of making you jump (although I did jump a few times), the terrifying imagery and hallucinations kept me very interested in what was going on besides all the shooting. One issue I had with the story though was trying to follow it, a lot of the information you learn is revealed through listening to voicemails and uploading data on the laptops, unfortunately there were occasions where I couldn't really hear the chatter and by the time I finished the game I had only a vague understanding of the entire story. Is there a website or something that summarizes the storyline?

Also, the ending was pretty sweet. The nuclear explosion was cool, and the surprise visit from Grudge girl in the helecopter was a nice touch. Also when you finish the credits there is something about the prototype being successful? I didn't quite understand that part.

Anyhow, overall I thoroughly enjoyed the game. The level design was definately an issue on occasion and lacked variety, but the excellently paced gameplay and creepy story kept me hooked till the end.
