4601  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: The "gamers" boycotting Capcom are pathetic on: March 27, 2007, 08:01:09 PM
I apologize for my comment about Richard suggesting we sign, I was just angry at the whole thing at the time. It's really a sad day though when gamers don't want other gamers to experience a game because they want it to stay on their "favorite" platform.

4602  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / The "gamers" boycotting Capcom are pathetic on: March 27, 2007, 03:26:22 AM
I couldn't believe the story I read on the front page about gamers actually boycotting Capcom for releasing DMC4 on the 360. This is so disrespectful to the gaming culture as a whole, every one of those bastards who have signed the petition seriously deserve to be banned from gaming altogether. How can you deny other gamers out there of enjoying a game because of your own selfish and biased feelings towards other consoles?

I don't understand why Rich Newman from the GT staff wrote this either:

"If you'd like to read the original article on this subject, or want to join the petition, you can visit the original story here.[/quote]

Are you suggesting we sign it?  thumbsdown
4603  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Marvel: Ultimate Alliance discussion on: March 23, 2007, 01:03:20 AM
I wouldn't play through the game in SP mode, i thought it was awesome with 2-3 people cooperatively. I agree that most of the game is a button mash, but that's kind of the point. Its easy to just jump in and start playing, I also enjoyed unlocking new costumes and upgrading the characters. If you gave up within the first hour you didn't even get to use some of the higher level powers of each character, not to mention dig into the story (which is suprisingly good) or see any of the cool cutscenes between the acts. Not sure what you were expecting in an arcade style beat 'em up RPG.
4604  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [360] Lost Planet impressions on: March 23, 2007, 12:58:03 AM
I'm at the end of mission 6 I believe. So far the bosses are really fucking stupid. I mean seriously, this is more of a battle with the controls and camera than it is with the boss itself. Nice character models and explosions but the level design is horridly repetetive, the control scheme is lame as hell, the grappling hook is pointless, the cutscenes do barely anything to pull you into the story, the main character sucks... The mechs are decent but SO clunky to control. If there's 11 missions then I'm a little more than half way through, to me all the difficulty comes from the controls and the camera. I do enjoy the intense action, but that's about the only thing keeping me going, and I probably won't play the whole way through, the frustrating boss battles just aren't worth it.

As a disclaimer, I don't mind difficult games. I mind games that are difficult because of asinine reasons. I have no trouble cruising through the levels, it's the bosses that are pulling the game down, even though they are pretty impressive.

I just put a reservation down on the Legendary edition, just FYI. GameStop appears to still me taking pre-orders, it's a $25 minimum. I don't plan on keeping it, just ebaying it.
4608  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Marvel: Ultimate Alliance discussion on: March 22, 2007, 06:47:29 PM
M:UA has become the multiplayer game of choice between my friends and I, we had a blast making our way through the game on normal and are now working on a second play through on hard. I was wondering though, what is there to unlock in hard mode that we haven't already unlocked in normal? We have all the characters except for Silver Surfer, Black Panther, and Dare Devil. Actually, the line-up of characters overall seems pretty sad doesn't it? I mean, they give us lame characters like Ms. Marvel, Moon Knight, and Luke Cage, when we should be getting Cyclops, Gambit, and Nightcrawler. The gameplay, while simple, remains entertaining thanks to the large number of playable characters. Whenever one of us would get tired of our main, we would give a new character a spin. I wish there was a bit more customization for the characters. Having four costumes to choose from is nice, but the color pallette appeared really dark to me. My main character was Wolverine, I was really anticipating unlocking his yellow and blue costume but was disappointed in the lack of vibrance in the colors. I think the main thing that makes this game really attractive is the smoothness of the multiplayer, its so easy for a second, third, or fourth player to jump in and start wreaking havoc.

Anyone else play this a lot MP?

Does anyone else think that this generation could become the most expensive in a long time. The 360 is approaching 18 months on the market and we don't even have a hint of a price drop. The PS3 is pricey and will continue to be there for a while. Game prices, aren't at an all time high, but for a disc based media they sure are. Games cost a lot more to make too, and that obviously has negative ramifications as well as positive. I don't think the sky is falling, but there has to come to a point where people just say no thanks, I'll take my disposable income elsewhere and find entertainment for less elsewhere.

I disagree, it's not just gaming that has become more expensive, it's everything if you look at it all. Hell, my cell phone was only $100 cheaper than my 360. To buy an HD DVD or Blue-Ray player for your movies, your also spending as much for a console if not more. Movies cost in the $15-25 range, and the amount of entertainment you get from a movie for the price doesn't scale like games. If you want music, you have to buy a $200 iPod or some other MP3 player, just to spend $10-20 on albums where 50% of the content is crap.

I don't think anyone seriously expected the 360 to perform well in Japan. Even if it had more games like Blue Dragon being released on a regular basis, the Japanese obviously prefer their own shit whether it's better or not. The point is, however, that even though the PS3 numbers aren't as low as the 360's, relative to it's predecessor (the PS2, obviously) the PS3 is also a failure. The only difference between the 360 and PS3 in Japan is the level of failure.

They sell at least 500k per iteration, AC4 on the PS2 reached greatest hits status. Not sure how AC5 did though.

I was exaggerating a bit calling it huge though, hehe.

Secondly, the only place that the 360 is doing very well in is North America. In Japan it is an utter disaster and in Europe, it's not exactly setting any records. So while, yeah the 360 might be on top here, it's probably going to end up in third place, worldwide.

And the PS3 isn't doing spectacular in all three of the territories, so I don't see Sony having that advantage over MS really. The FF games sell just as well in the U.S as Japan, so it would make sense to put the game on the platform with the biggest install base.

No, FF12 would be devastating. DMC is just huge.

6.  Games -- yes... the games are good!    Resistance was one of those compelling games I was driven to finish -- much like Gears of War was for the 360 for me.    Motorstorm is fast and sexy, and NBA 07 is gorgeous in 1080p.   You can see the imperfections in the parque flooring of the court!

Games were only a sixth of the reason he loves the system, that's why the internet calls it a failure slywink

I don't think anyone in particular is arguing that the hardware itself is lacking or of poor quality, we all know there's a beast under that hood. However, the battle is on the software front.

I've been putting some coop time into Marvel: Ultimate Alliance with my buddy, we're around half way through now. That game is MUCH longer than I expected. I've also been putting in some hours on Splinter Cell: DA, which I'm gradually deciding isn't a very good game (loved Chaos Theory though).
4625  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Yahoo News: Next-gen wars over already??? who won... on: March 19, 2007, 07:14:02 PM
I see the overall console sales a battle between the 360 and PS3, and it's WAY too early to tell which one will take the throne. Remember, this generation is different from previous generations whereas the consoles were designed on the basis of expandability. So, if things go the way MS and Sony want it to, the 360 and PS3 will be around for a longer period than their predecessors.

I can believe it simply based on my own purchase history. I bought a 360, and am considering buying a PS2 slim to play a few games from that library. I'm not ready to invest in a PS3 until at least later this year if not early next year, and not even just because the PS3 is expensive, it's not THAT much more expensive than a 360, but I already spent a heavy chunk of change on the 360. I'm sure a lot of people are in the same boat as me.

I put a kiddie label on anything that resembles a world which I grew out of probably when I started middle school. I don't need gore and violence in my games, hence my love for the Myst series and such. However, some games (like Mario Galaxy) simply resemble the likes of children entertainment which I no longer have any interest in. Like Barney.

Why even pay attention to Japan? We know what they want, you don't have to look at sales charts to know what is selling over there. DS or Wii? Selling well. RPG? Selling well. Quirky game with retarded name? Selling well. That's Japan's market in a nutshell.
4632  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Gears of War - graphics issues? (fixed) Now help me kill RAAM on: March 09, 2007, 08:47:26 AM
This is utter bullshit, every time I start getting getting some shots in on him the cheater AI turns on and he kills me. Am I the only one who had such a rough time with this boss? I mean its horrible, I keep coming to the computer and venting posts because otherwise I think I would be bashing my controller against the wall. Great way to ruin an otherwise good game...
4633  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Gears of War - graphics issues? (fixed) Now help me kill RAAM on: March 09, 2007, 08:34:45 AM
Another dozen or so attemps, this is getting lame. Seriously when you think about it, if the game is about 6-7 hours long, and I'm already at over an hour attempting RAAM, then this boss fight makes up about a sixth of the game. Ugh, there better be a good ending or this boss fight is going to ruin the game for me.

I also have to go ahead and say the kryll are also pretty damn stupid, your supposed to be safe in light but the moment your not drenched in light they take you out.
4635  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [Wii] Mario Galaxy Trailer on: March 09, 2007, 07:49:30 AM
I don't need my games to be GTA style, personally I don't like over-the-top violence and swearing. Light-hearted is one thing, like in Rayman games for example, but seriously if Mario wasn't running around in that video you would think it was a kids game. Nintendo should do for Mario what they did for Zelda and mature it a little bit.

what settings are there?...you mean like brightness or grainy?

I figured out what the problem was. In the video options you can switch the game between soft, vibrant, and lucid. There also is a default option, but apparently the default option is also vibrant. This was causing highly oversaturated lighting which was driving me nuts. I finally figured this out when I switched to Lucid, unfortunately I figured it out at the end of the game.

And speaking of which, how in the hell do I defeat RAAM? Is there a way to use the turret gun without getting insta-killed by those damn kryll?

I hardly think they should be casting any stones at Sony for their online service, when they are not even as advanced as the original XBox in terms of online support.

Agreed, the Wii will look like an Atari 2600 by Christmas to all those people out buying HDTV's.  Honestly, I think Nintendo sucks a pretty big stick of shit these days.  Why?  Well the Nintendo DS has about 889 really really shitty games.  The Cube had what, 10 good games and 150 bad ones?  The Wii has 1, maybe 2 good games (depending on who you talk to) and so far what, 30 fairly shitty ones?

Ok, so their little Cube+ is selling, thats great, good for them, but they should be on their knees praying to the media for hyping the hell out of it.  The soccer moms lining up at Walmarts across America are what made their sales so big.  But like all faddish things, they're day in the sun won't last.  If anything, super-casual gamers and soccer moms have extremely short attention spans, soon enough they'll be back out searching for the next thing to buy little-johnny.

I am not real happy with Sony these days, but I am learning to hate the shit out of Nintendo.  They seem to be playing up this "We're hip like the Mac, and heres why, and if you don't buy us you are one of those fatass nerdy gamer types that smell.".  Screw Nintendo.

I couldn't have said it better, it's starting to feel like the Nintendo fans are all that's covering up the reality of Nintendo's history the past few generations. I bought a Cube about a year ago mainly for RE4 and in attempting to compile a list of good games on the system worth picking up, I realized the list was ridiculously small. The Wii is the same story, except this time there is better 3rd party support but most of the games are sucking anyways.

Sony is taking a step in the right direction with Home.

4640  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Got my HDTV... need advice and tips on: March 07, 2007, 10:05:42 PM
I finally got my HDTV last weekend, I ended up going with the Mitsubishi WD-62830, it's a 62" rear-projection TV capable of up to 1280x720 resolution. I know it's not on the high-end of rear-projection TVs, but it was a good price and in my original budget of about $2000 I forgot to factor in the 360 and games as well, so I had to downscale on the TV a bit (although, with Costco's 90 return policy I will probably save for a few months and upgrade).

Anyhow, my impressions vary because oddly enough, the quality of the image from game to game seem to range. As far as movies go, the image is great. I downloaded a few HD movies on thought they looked wonderful at 720p. Same with movies at the standard 480p. However, with games the quality seems to be inconsistent.

In Gears of War, the image quality looks very sharp and clear, however it seems like the lighting is saturated and it distorts the textures occasionally.

In Kameo (demo) the game is beautiful, the textures are sharp, the lighting is vibrant, I have no complaints.

In Oblivion, the game looks WAY too soft. Compared to my previous HD set which was the 32" Sony Bravia, the image on my Mitsubishi looks how I imagine it would on the Bravia with the sharpness turned way down.

In Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, the game looks great. Sharp textures, no complaints.

In Prey (demo), it's almost half and half. The game appears sharp in some areas, but in more brightly lit areas, like those stages where you are in the desert talking to the grandfather, the image is again very soft.

I'm wondering why I'm getting varying results. When I was playing Prey, I thought the soft textures in some areas might be because it was the demo and it wasn't using high-res textures. That wouldn't explain Oblivion though. I'm also considering the fact that I'm viewing the TV from a relatively close distance. My viewing distance from the TV is no more than 8 feet. Still, it brings me back to being confused about certain games looking sharp and others soft.

Any tips or techniques or tweaking my image? I've of course tweaked the sharpness settings and such, but they don't seem to make much of a difference. Should I buy one of those HD setup DVD's and go from there? Just looking for some advice, thanks.
