And Sony isn't exactly in the position to frankly give a damn at what consumers want. Remember - Sony (well, Krazy Ken technically) was the one that said that people would get a second job just to get the PS3. They don't really care what people think.

I believe Sony cares about what people think, it's not fair to say that these few guys at the top are the ones who controlled the entire creative process in designing and marketing the PS3. Like I've heard others say before, Sony really positioned themselves as the luxury car of the console world. Obviously no one really expects consumers who can't easily afford the PS3 to get a second job, but it's not like we're talking about a $1000 machine here. I'm betting that if the PS3 had some big-name titles out of the game (lets not kid ourselves, Resistance is no system seller), the PS3 would be thriving. I still stand on my belief that it's ultimately the software that is hindering PS3 sales at the moment, not the hardware.

I've only called in sick from work twice in the past 5 years, one of them was because I was too hungover to come in, the other was for the re-release of Resident Evil on the Cube. I know there are plenty of better games to call in sick for, but I always feel so akward calling in sick that I rarely do it.

That sucks... I'm honestly beginning to feel sympathetic towards Sony. They pack so much into their gaming machines, sell them at already low prices (for what you get), yet consumers still demand lower prices. I hope everything balances out for Sony at the end.
4607  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / R6: Vegas is the best game on the 360! on: April 06, 2007, 06:26:09 AM
In the past 4 weeks I've played nearly all the supposedly good titles on the 360 (taking full advantage of GameStop's used game return policy slywink). I played GoW, Lost Planet, Crackdown, Marvel: UA, Splinter Cell: DA, on top of most of the good games in 2006 before I lost my 360. Basically what I'm saying is, I've played just about every worthwhile game on the 360. A few days ago I bought R6: Vegas, just beat it tonight, and I must say this is by and far the best game I've played on the 360, this is what GoW wishes it could have been in terms of being an all-around awesome game. Seriously, there is not a single department where this game does not blow the shit out of the competition. I don't even want to begin going into detail because this post will become 8 paragraphs long, I simply haven't played a good console FPS like this since Goldeneye on the N64. And I haven't even tried the MP mode out yet! I hope Ubisoft Montreal received all the credit they deserved for this gem, they certainly deserve it. R6: Vegas is one of the best games I've played in the past few years and my top game on the 360 =)

IGN rates the graphics a 7.5:

A beautiful 2D platformer and an uninspired 3D one. The worlds Mario explores look fantastic when they're flat, but the moment they gain depth they become barren landscapes.

Great, because we haven't been playing great looking 2D games for a decade now. Still, I find myself craving a good Mario game and might cave in to that desire.

4612  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Dead pixel on my brand spanking new LCD HDTV! on: April 04, 2007, 01:09:01 AM
Just got myself a Sony LCD HDTV today, forget exactly what the model number is. However, I was disappointed to find a single dead pixel on the screen, mostly noticeable when I'm in the Xbox dashboard. My friend tried to mock me for being so angry about a single messed up dot on the screen, but its like buying a brand new car off the lot and noticing there is a dent on it when you get home. It sucks! I can exchange the TV, but before I do that, is there are way to fix a dead pixel?

Well, if its actually going to happen I must wait then (unless I find out the firmware stuff is fixed and I can't play the old games I legitimately own on it), how cruel.

I wouldn't hold out on buying a PSP now especially at this price, simply because of rumor and speculation. I read through the entire "future of the PSP" feature at IGN and they didn't hint whatsoever at a revised/PSP2 in the future. I'm sure it will come down the line eventually, but I'm not going to wait however long it takes to come out when I'm so excited about the PSP right now. I say buy the sucker and start enjoying the some of the games you've missed out on so far (which there are a lot of I realized when browsing the PSP library the other day).

4618  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / I officially love the PSP on: April 03, 2007, 03:28:06 AM
Now, before I begin on explaining why I've become a PSP lover, I have to bash my DS Lite a little bit. See, I've owned a DS Lite since it was launched. Since it's release, I've played a multitude of games on the platform only to be continually disappointed. I'm not saying there aren't good games on the system because obviously there are, I just don't think they are the right type of games for me and the games that appeal to me are far and few in between. I own NSMB, Brain Age, Animal Crossing, PotC, Metroid, and Pheonix Wright (might be forgetting a few since I rarely play them). Most of these games have been highly praised by this community and the gaming community in general, but with the exception of Mario, I've grown bored of these games within hours of starting them. I'm also not a fan of the DS hardware which, in my opinion, is decidedly lackluster. The dual/touch-screen setup is rarely utilized in any way that is evolutionary to the standard controller layout. Metroid, which I do agree utilizes the DS setup to a great extent, still fails sell me on the controls. I still find aiming to be slippery, and my hand cramps up pretty quickly. Not to mention the DS hardware can't do 3D worth a damn, and I'm sorry but when there is a competing portable that can do PS2-level graphics, I have a hard time feeling satisfied with the SNES-level quality of the DS. Now, I don't entirely hate the DS, I still find it to be a great platform for RPG's and platformers, but I really feel like the system is aimed at the younger audience and those who pride themselves in playing obscure Japanese titles. I don't fall under that demographic.

So, this brings me to the story of how I fell in love with the Sony PSP. My friends and I went out of town this weekend, requiring a 4 hour drive to and from our destination. I was happy to find out one of my friends had brought along his PSP, since I never quite gave the portable the time of day to get to know it, I figured this would be a good time to dive in and see all that it has to offer. Basically, I ended up being glued to the screen for the duration of my time in the car. I played a few games, including NFS: Most Wanted and GTA: Liberty City Stories. I was blown away at the quality of the graphics in these games, as far as I could tell the games looked nearly just as good as their PS2 counterparts, not to mention offered just as much content and extras. The PSP is a freaking portable console, it really is. Then I watched a few movies, I watched The Island and Click, again I was blown away. The PSP's screen is like a mini HDTV! The quality of the movies was astounding, plus I was wearing a nice set of headphones so it seriously felt like I was watching a movie on my home theater setup. Between the games, movies, listening to music, and messing around with the PSP's internet capabilities, I couldn't believe the system was being sold for not even $100 more than the DS. The PSP has restored my faith in portable gaming when I was beginning to think I simply didn't enjoy portables. The PSP definately has its share of flaws, the load times in the games were much longer than an average DS game, and the analog stick isn't perfect, but for the most part I enjoyed everything about it. With all the good games slated to come out for the PSP and the PSP's interactive potential with the PS3, I think I'm going to be doing a lot of my gaming on this little wonder =)

Very, very loud. And unlike the PS3, it's a very high pitched whine, so you'll be able to hear it no matter what enclosure you use to keep it in, and over the volume of most of your games unless it's turned up VERY loud.

Eh, I'd say that is a bit exaggerated. It's kind of funny to be debating the volume of the system because I suppose it's a little different for everybody taking into consideration how well your hearing is, how sensitive your ears are to certain pitches, the type of room your in, etc. However, overall the system has never been loud enough to distract me and while I'm playing games or watching a movie , I rarely notice it. When loading levels I hear it, there's usually not much else to pay attention to besides the sound of the DVD in the drive spinning though *shrug*
4624  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Splinter Cell: Double Agent is a crappy game on: March 30, 2007, 09:47:27 AM
I'm sorry, but being the huge Splinter Cell fan that I am, I have to let it be known that Double Agent is the worst contribution to the series yet. I've been trying for the past two weeks to love it or, heck, even just like it. As hard as I try though, I simply become increasingly discouraged as I progress through the campaign. Lets start with the graphics: These are not "next-gen" graphics by any means, this is Chaos Theory with SM 3.0 enabled (I played the PC version, even bought the collector's edition). Supposedly the engine has been upgraded from Chaos Theory, but I don't see it. The textures are butt-ugly, the character models are stiff, the lighting and shadows are nothing special.  If you play the game at the brightness settings recommended (I used the in-game calibration), in some of the darker areas you can't see well. I know there is night-vision, but it's blurry to me and I have trouble navigating with it. This game should have been released 6-12 months later with a major facelift.

Then there is the level design itself. Initially I just thought the old stealth exploring skillz had become rusty since Chaos Theory, so making my way through the first level (you know, the one where you have to disarm the nuclear warhead) I blamed myself for not knowing where in the world I was going and constantly back-tracking. After that they take you to the JBA base, and it was there that I realized the 3D map is fucking retarded and similar to what I assume staring at the blueprints to Osama Bin Laden's underground lair would be like. The map is almost completely useless for me, it's incredibly difficult to utilize and make sense of. After that you reach the snow level. Fun! No clue where the heck I'm trying to go, every corridor on this boat looks the same, I dunno who keeps spotting me (the majority of the time you are in light, so there's not much lurking), this map isn't helping me find the damn stupid captain... It must have taken me 3-4 hours to finish this mission (including all the dying and reloading my saves/checkpoints). Every mission is the same story, and just got back to the JBA base for the second time, and this map is doing nothing to help me find where the furnace is to dump this body. That's about when I called it quits.

Lets also talk about the poor controls. I don't remember whether the controls were this troublesome in Chaos Theory, but here Sam Fisher is similar to a spy with down syndrome. The control scheme is simply mediocre, I fall out of my stealth position accidently too often, it feels clunky (imagine a heavy mix of RE4 with a small dash of Ninja Gaiden), pulling out and putting away gadgets and weapons does not feel seemless, and so on. On top of it all, the story just isn't compelling whatsoever, at least not at this point.

I know people here have enjoyed it, I know it got good reviews, but for whatever reason I'm seeing these glaring flaws that apparently others are willing to overlook, and I reached my limit for withstanding poor quality in a game. Me quits  icon_frown

It was a 20 second trailer that basically showed off the real-time shadows and lighting, not much basis to get excited or let down over IMO.
4627  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: GTA IV Countdown on: March 30, 2007, 02:53:39 AM
That trailer was short but fucking awesome, there was way more detail in the city and tons more people and cars on the screen. Incredible lighting and shadows as well. Perhaps the "hook" of this game is modern day, not centralized around a particularly culture. We shouldn't be comparing this to GoW and such though because of the nature of the game world, GoW wouldn't look as great if it did if there were a dozen vehicles and 50+ people walking around.

Now to see what new features they will be implementing...

4629  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Well, it's official now (360 elite) on: March 28, 2007, 07:55:03 PM
Lets also try not to forget that this is the first video game console to bring this form of entertainment to us in such an accessible manner, MS is treading a lot of new water here and though the system may not be perfect, at least we have all that extra content to access if we want it. I'm sure when Sony's stuff starts surfacing, pricing and such will become more competetive.

As far as the 360 Elite system goes, you don't have to buy it, if you think it's a rip-off then stick to the premium. At least all the additional hardware is an option, something Sony can't say the same about. I'm still have like two months on my Costco return, think I'm gonna have to exchange it for an elite system.

So, I've put a decent amount of time into Crackdown now and it seems like a well-done game, although a bit shallow. There isn't a true storyline to the game and as far as missions, your basically on the sole mission to take out the leaders of the three dominating gangs of the city. There are also the "side-mission" style goals, which are collecting the agility and hidden orbs, as well as the races. On top of that, your character is constantly growing stronger. So, how does all this compare to the other GTA-inspired game on the 360, Saint's Row? I haven't played SR myself, but I would love to see what people who have played both think about them in comparison, and which one they think is better.

The irony of this whole situation is that Capcom, with the success of the Wii, is probably now kicking themselves for not having the favourable relationship they previously enjoyed with Nintendo. When they took RE4 out of exclusively they seriously soured the relationship, and I've read that they aren't being offered license discounts/perks from Nintendo anymore. Whether the playstation fanboys like it or not, Capcom has to now max their multiplatform options if they're to maintain a healthy existence.

I don't see Capcom kicking themselves though, from what we've seen the software on the Wii isn't selling that well. Nintendo's games are the only ones making any sort of splash on the sales charts, the rest just seem to sink.

I couldn't believe the story I read on the front page about gamers actually boycotting Capcom for releasing DMC4 on the 360. This is so disrespectful to the gaming culture as a whole, every one of those bastards who have signed the petition seriously deserve to be banned from gaming altogether. How can you deny other gamers out there of enjoying a game because of your own selfish and biased feelings towards other consoles?

I don't understand why Rich Newman from the GT staff wrote this either:

I wouldn't play through the game in SP mode, i thought it was awesome with 2-3 people cooperatively. I agree that most of the game is a button mash, but that's kind of the point. Its easy to just jump in and start playing, I also enjoyed unlocking new costumes and upgrading the characters. If you gave up within the first hour you didn't even get to use some of the higher level powers of each character, not to mention dig into the story (which is suprisingly good) or see any of the cool cutscenes between the acts. Not sure what you were expecting in an arcade style beat 'em up RPG.
4640  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [360] Lost Planet impressions on: March 23, 2007, 12:58:03 AM
I'm at the end of mission 6 I believe. So far the bosses are really fucking stupid. I mean seriously, this is more of a battle with the controls and camera than it is with the boss itself. Nice character models and explosions but the level design is horridly repetetive, the control scheme is lame as hell, the grappling hook is pointless, the cutscenes do barely anything to pull you into the story, the main character sucks... The mechs are decent but SO clunky to control. If there's 11 missions then I'm a little more than half way through, to me all the difficulty comes from the controls and the camera. I do enjoy the intense action, but that's about the only thing keeping me going, and I probably won't play the whole way through, the frustrating boss battles just aren't worth it.

As a disclaimer, I don't mind difficult games. I mind games that are difficult because of asinine reasons. I have no trouble cruising through the levels, it's the bosses that are pulling the game down, even though they are pretty impressive.
