Half of the fun of a game isn't even playing the game, it's getting caught up in the hype. You wouldn't care nearly as much for the game 8 months down the line when you already know whether it sucks or not.

I never said that they just came up with it, I'm just saying that now there is one.

This is the movie about Daniel Pearl, an American journalist kidnapped in Pakistan in 2002, and his wife Mariana Pearl as well as many Pakistani and American government workers trying to figure out who was responsible for the kidnapping and attempting to rescue him. I'm ashamed to say I didn't know anything about this true story so I didn't know what the ending was going to be, unlike the majority of the audience I assume. After being burned by just about every summer release this year (here's looking at you, Transformers), I just wanted something low-profile and on a more serious tone. Mariana Pearl is played by Angelina Jolie, which concerned me, but her performance had some very outstanding moments, and the tension of the story kept me interested. Not the most exciting movie in the world, but it was definately an interesting glimpse into the politics and government of Pakistan during this act of terrorism, which proved to be very embarrasing for them. Decent flick, I suggest a rental more than a trip to the theater.
4604  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: After half a year of Vista, how many are on board? on: July 10, 2007, 01:33:41 AM
The way I see it, I understand why someone who already has an established PC with XP running everything smoothly would not want to upgrade. However, if your ordering a new PC (I got a new desktop a month ago and just got a new laptop), it makes sense to order them equipped with Vista because obviously your going to want to give your machine as long a pair of legs as possible. I think another 6 months from now, as the OS continues to stabilize and more games and features require Vista, more of you who aren't currently planning on it will be seriously considering the switch.

Another, more general, question about laptops, is it normal for the AC adaptor to get really hot?

Also, I'm considering downgrading to XP simply because Nvidia doesn't have full support for my graphics card yet (the Quadro NVS 110m) and I'm worried that it is degrading my gaming performance. Do I have to reformat or is there a downgrade option?

How hot is hot? Is it burning hot if you put it on your lap, or just warm? Is it sitting on thick carpet or something?

I'm talking about the AC adapter itself, not the laptop. The adapter is sitting on carpet, but I highly doubt that makes any difference for how hot it gets. It's pretty hot though, there is steam coming from the adapter and the wall outlet will occasionally spark up.

Turns out I had the wrong software installed after I reformatted, I found the right drivers at Dell's website and now it works perfectly. Thanks for the info!

I also thought that General RAAM at the end of Gears of War was by far the most difficult and infuriating thing in that game.  Several times I was close to throwing my controller.

I almost ended up not beating the game because of that, and I definately have no plans to play through the game a second time and dealing with the frustration all over again.

Bought a new desktop and laptop loaded with Vista and I love it. I had some difficulties initially with the desktop, but once I updated my drivers everything ran smoothly. I love the new interface, there's a lot of great options for tweaking the OS, and all the games I've tried so far work flawlessly. The laptop runs just as smooth, no driver issues whatsoever. Keep in mind though that I haven't tried out any older PC titles so I haven't had to deal with the same compatibility issues other gamers have who are trying to play older games.

I'm guessing it more likely you would disable the mouse in the bios.
Nah, I have a Dell, and the software is easy to disable. Right-click the "Synaptics Pointing device" icon, go to its properties, and you can disable the pad, or the buttons, or both. You can also click the "Disable TouchPad/Stick when a USB pointing device is present" so it will shut itself off when you have a mouse plugged in, but be available if you are out on the road and don't have/can't reach it.

That would be awesome... but I have no "Synaptics Pointing device" icon on my desktop! Gonna try downloading drivers from their website...

4621  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Can I disable my laptop's mouse sensor thingy? Also can I change my video card? on: July 05, 2007, 11:06:10 PM
I got my first laptop over the weekend and I love it. I am using it primarily for school purposes (watching porn and playing WoW at school FTW!!), so obviously I'll be using a word processor the majority of the time. I started typing my first paper on my new laptop and randomely the mouse would jump to a different location of the page and all of a sudden I would be typing into another word. I went for two hours of being annoyed before realizing what the problem was. Initially I was cursing Vista and MS Word 2007, but I finally realized my palm was grazing the little sensor pad and the mouse click buttons, putting the cursor in different places. I ordered a wireless mouse for the laptop so I won't need the sensor pad, is there any way to disable it so that it doesn't screw up my typing?

Also, is it possible to upgrade a laptop's video card? My dad bought me a Dell Latitude D830 which is awesome but the video card isn't ideal for gaming.

The pacing was excellent.  Not so much downtime so you'd start crying about when they'll get to the fireworks factory, and not so much mindless action that the whole thing is like watching a videogame.  The movie strikes a good balance between plot development and big explosions; it's fun to watch.

Totally disagree, the movie had one of the worst lulls ever that lasted a good hour. I think it was around the time the Defcon 7 people came around.

Really horrible writing as well, its obvious the budget was spent on special effects and not the dialogue and writing.

I'm not trying to be a downer or anything, but I was definately at a point where I wanted to leave, I was just utterly bored. The beginning is decent, the middle sucks, the ending rocks. That honestly sums it up.

And the movie is really cheesy, like when the Transformers are sneaking around the house and such to avoid the parents, it was funny but corny as heck.

Good action sequences, poor writing, average story, crummy pacing. Overall grade: C-.

As for the non-visible armor changes, I have a feeling it's due to the fact that the character's look is so closely tied to the charcter.  Lulu's dress of 1000 belts or Yangus's spiky hat are part of their character, and the developers probably don't want to risk losing that aspect by allowing armor changes.

Ah yes, very good point. I've forgotten how story-driven these RPGs are compared to, say, Oblivion. I'm very excited about these two titles, I'm not the biggest JRPG fan in the world mostly because they run so long and I rarely complete them. However, the ones that I have completed, I consider some of my favorite games of all time. Blue Dragon and Eternal Sonata, barring impressions that flat out say they are bad games, are day one purchases for me. It may not seem like it, but MS getting these two games and whatever other JRPGs lined up for the 360 is probably one of their biggest steps yet.
4627  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / So what is everyones plan for July 4th? on: July 02, 2007, 01:27:32 AM
This is going to be perhaps the worst July 4th for me in history. My girlfriend had a falling out with her friend who is my best friend's girlfriend, so that puts me in a position to have to choose between spending the day with the girlfriend and her friends or with the group of buddies I normally spend the day with. Either decision is going to piss someone off, so I'm thinking I'll just stay home and study for my midterm on thursday.

Please tell me you guys have more promising plans...

Ah, the joys of being Blizzard. biggrin

I would say the joy belongs to us. Blizzard has to be the only company in the industry who refuses to release anything but a stellar product. They know the game isn't that great and they are smart enough to realize that in the long run, keeping their reputation and cutting their losses on a troubled project is the most profitable decision. If they ever release a Game Developer of Decade award, there's no one that deserves it more than Blizzard IMO.

From what I understand about the situation is that in terms of it being an act of rage, it's being debated because it wasn't any sort of angry reaction, so to speak, since the whole thing happened over a span of three days.

I was listening to a local radio station and they had very good points being made about the situation. The Today Show went after Vince McMahon (owner of WWE) in an interview trying to specifically pin the blame on steroid use encouraged by the WWE. However, the radio host made a good point about people getting so caught up in trying to point fingers and blame something that they aren't looking at the real issue, which is what the fuck was wrong with this guy, really. You can't blame it all on steroids. Similar to the Virginia Tech situation, you can't blame it all on guns or the campus police or whatever, you have to look at what was wrong with the individual.

He (the radio host) also brought up examples of other venues, such as SNL, which has had three high-profile deaths on the cast due to drug overdose or murder (Phil Hartman, Chris Farley, and Belluci), where nobody thought it fit to blame the show itself or the entertainment industry. Also the music industry itself, which has a long list of individuals within it who have died from drug overdose and murder.
