Imagine if there is a deluge of genuinely high profile titles for the Wii all of which use the controller in remarkably fun ways and look cool besides. Nintendo will crush Sony and Microsoft in one fell swoop and will show how the pursuit of bigger and better graphics does not always equal better gameplay. icon_cool

Err... Probably not.
4604  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Pirates 3 Impressions (Spoilers) on: May 31, 2007, 03:29:31 AM
The movie was too god damn long. Why do movies with crappy stories insist on being so long!?! By the last hour I was so jittery I was WAITING to jump out of my seat.

I still like it.  It's gorgeous and it plays well.  Yes, it does get repetitive, but I am still enjoying myself.  I'm a huge fan of anything Disney and a big fan of Pirates of the Carribbean so that might slightly skew my opinion.

Part of my enjoyment of a game is the visuals, and this game delivers in spades.  I just love the environments and the towns.  I know IGN ate it alive giving it a 5.5, but I'd easily give the game a 7.2 or so and that's good enough in my book.

Not a great game, but an enjoyable one.

I'm thinking I may want to play through the game just to enjoy the visuals and the atmosphere, it looks really good in screenshots.
4607  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [POLL]guides for games on: May 25, 2007, 08:28:15 PM
I've only bought a few guides in my entire time gaming, the last one was the Oblivion guide and that was mainly because the buzz was crazy and, well, you know how it goes. I do consult gamefaqs though if I'm stuck, when playing through Lego Star Wars 2 I consulted it 2-3 times. Like others have said, I play to have fun and to be immersed. If something (usually stupid) is breaking that, then I want to mend it.

True, but the XBL service has had much time to patch and be refined. Sony's service will see the same refining with future patches.

4610  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Starting up WoW again on: May 23, 2007, 06:29:16 PM
My recommendation is to start on a newer server so you have more people leveling characters to group with and run instances with. Leveling on some older servers, even in light of BC's new races, can be a lonesome endeavor.

I also recommend a PVE or RP server, PVP is chalk-full of kids who thrive on the "ganking experience".

I never got to play through the game as my save files kept getting deleted on me, but I was always in awe of the amount of style the game possessed. It may not have been the best game in the world, but it had SO much style...

Yeah all very valid - but look how well the Wii is doing with basically just three or four games.

Further supplementing the fact that Wii may indeed just be a fad.

It makes perfect sense to me, the ultimate question is how does this translate for gaming? Would I see an improvement in my current games because now one CPU is handing the game, and one CPU is handling Windows operations?

Well, I'm considering upgrading from my 6800 to an 8600, $200 really isn't bad at all. The question is, is it worthwhile to be replacing my video card in a 3.2ghz machine?
4617  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: What exactly does dual core mean? on: May 22, 2007, 07:05:45 PM
I read most of the info on the page from that link, but I'm still failing to understand whether for gaming a dual-core 2.5ghz CPU will be better than a single P4 3.5ghz CPU. From what I understand, having a dual-core processor is mainly better for people who multi-task, like if someone wants to burn a CD in the background while playing a PC game. But for raw framerate in our PC games, what should I look for? What will make a game like the upcoming Crysis run smooth like butter?

Lastly, I have a P4 3.2ghz PC, should I hold onto my system but replace the 6800 I have with an 8800 to make it future proof?

4621  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / What exactly does dual core mean? on: May 22, 2007, 05:45:00 AM
From what I understood, a dual-core CPU simply meant double the CPU speed. For instance, if it was a dual-core 1.5ghz processor, you were infact getting a 3ghz processor speed. However, a friend of mine was quick to dispell that understanding, leaving me once again confused about how to measure a CPU's processing speed for gaming. Can anyone explain this for me? I plan to begin building a new comp in light of the upcoming July Intel price-cuts.

4623  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Starcraft 2 confirmed! on: May 21, 2007, 12:11:07 AM
What makes you think the WoW community hasn't stopped growing. I see less and less people on-line. I've been on since the beginning and the drop in people, from my perspective, is fairly significant.

What do you base your observations on? Your server? With the growing number of servers and availability of server transfers, it would make sense that the community would thin out a bit. However, the server I'm on is just as bustling as ever, and I still see new players. I'm not sure what the cancellation/new subscriber rate is, but the fact that WoW is usually the #1 selling PC game ever since releases just shows that the game is as popular as ever, if the popularity isn't actually growing.
4624  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: HDTV and XBox video question on: May 20, 2007, 09:04:18 PM
Considering the TV supports 1366 x 768 resolution, it should be able to display in 1080i right? Either way, it looks like a good TV based on it's specs and the user ratings.
4625  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Starcraft 2 confirmed! on: May 20, 2007, 08:08:14 PM
I don't think anyone who still actively plays WoW and enjoys it wants a WoS released any time soon, a lot of guilds would probably deteriorate because of members switching over and such. Essentially, WoS would damage the WoW community to an extent. No reason for that yet, wait until the WoW community has stopped growing, then start working on WoS or World of Diablo or World of Three Vikings or whatever other property Blizz wants to convert to cash.

4627  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: HDTV and XBox video question on: May 20, 2007, 07:36:18 PM
For HD the 360 connects with component cables. As far as whether 1080p is worth it or not, from what I've been told the difference is only noticeable on sets 50 inches or larger. Personally, while my TV is capable of up to 1080i, I still keep my 360 set to 720p because I simply don't notice the difference (I have a 42" HD) and performance in some games is better. So, that being said, if you can find a TV at a good price that doesn't support 1080p, go for it, the hundreds of dollars you would pay extra for 1080p support isn't worth a difference in image quality you would only notice if you had both TV's running side-by-side, seriously.

As far as what to look for in the TV, a high contrast ratio is important. Stay away from rear-projection televisions, in my experience with them I've noticed much softer textures than a plasma or LCD can project.

It also shows that not all games using the Unreal 3 graphics engine will look as good as GoW.

I don't think we have to worry too much about any particular features in SC2 which would make SC fans unhappy. Although info has JUST been released for the game, my bet is that it's simply an enhanced version of SC gameplay-wise.

What gets me, people are complaining about the graphics.  Do you not remember what SC looked like, it was a complaint back then, but the gameplay overrode those complaints.  Blizzard has never been known to have good graphics.  EVER.  They are known for great gameplay, balanced units, and overall, a fun game to play.

No way bro, every Blizzard game looks awesome. They replace massive polygon counts with gorgeous art direction and they're games come out looking twice as good as it's competition.

I'm really excited about this game, its looking completely awesome already.

One thing I'm also loving in the level design is how gaps in the terrain expose outter space, they've even incorporated it into their website.

4636  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: April NPD numbers... on: May 18, 2007, 07:11:20 AM
Sony's already started to make the necessary changes and I'm sure Mr. Moore can be jetisoned from the 360 ship as easily as Krazy Ken was tossed from the good ship Playstation.

Why would MS want to get rid of Moore? That guy is awesome, I've always perceived him as being passionate about his job.

I was surprised at how many actual game kiosks they had, plus I checked out the forum and read some of people's experiences and it began to sound cool... People having hotel parties and shit sounds like fun. Figured I should retract my statement if there's drunken fun going on over there.

A $50 price drop for the 360 would be perfect for MS this holiday season to battle the Wii, along with the insane amount of high-profile titles.

E3 was nothing more than a location for giant companies to shovel their crap down consumers throats.  It was all about hype.  Gamers had nothing to do with it, which is why it sucked.  Besides, you didn't get a fair look at games anyway.

PAX is a gamers convention.  It started out more like a giant LAN party that has expanded into other forms of gaming, and is only now starting to attract attention from the corporate bloodsuckers due to it's awesomeness.

Give me PAX any day.

The only thing the giant companies were shoveling were their games... And I don't understand what you mean about gamers having nothing to do with it? Have you ever even been to E3?
