I want this too but I also have too many games on iPad in my backlog. I need to stop buying so many damn puzzle based games on iPad that I hold myself to finishing but never finish because I get stuck and uninterested.
42  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Alien: Isolation announced - kinda looks good? on: October 03, 2014, 08:49:43 PM
Whenever a game has mixed reviews I always consider it something you should play if you're especially into the subject matter. If you loved the Alien movies, if you're looking for a scary game, etc., you'll probably like Isolation.

I like the unified approach, and after using Office 2013 I think I'm into the design/UI their going for. I don't think it's going to mean anything for gaming, though. Except that the Xbox should get more apps.
45  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Console sales chart by generation on: September 30, 2014, 11:43:49 PM
I found this really cool chart in an article at the Economist. It's from March of last year, but it covers every generation from the first console generation (starting with the Odyssey in 1972) to last generation. I've never seen this data in a collected format, it's always been something I would read randomly from disparate sources.

A few personal takeaways for me that somehow I never learned or realized before -

- Nintendo had a console before the NES
- There was a lot more competition in the earlier days
- Sega took a hell of a bite out of Nintendo in the Genesis/SNES generation (I always knew the battle was fierce, but thought the SNES greatly outsold the Genesis in the long run)
- How severely Sony dominated during the PSX and PS2 generations.
- How the PS2 sold close to 160m units, I thought the Wii was the best-selling console of all time
- The Saturn and Dreamcast were abject failures (thought they did better numbers than that)
- It's strange that there was almost no total growth between the 3rd and 4th generation, where as in most other generations there's significant generation-over-generation growth
- Skipping generations 3 to 4 due to lack of growth, starting from generations 2 to 3, the growth trend goes: 120%, 65%, 43%, 20% (360/PS3/Wii)

Interesting stuff, at least to me!

The FPS issue doesn't appear to matter for this game anyway. It seems a change was made to the PS4 version just before release that caps it to a perfectly stable 30 FPS, while someone who played the pre-release version confirmed that it used to run at 60 FPS unlocked, just like was reported and confirmed by others earlier. As for resolution, the PS4 runs at 1080p while someone who pixel-counted said that the Xbox One version runs at 900p. Both versions seem to have stable framerates.

Thanks for this info, I've been looking around the internet for the PS4 framerate and not coming up with anything.

I want to talk about the new WoW expansion coming up but there's almost no activity in that area of the forums. Can we kill it and add it to the main gaming section? Anyone else think that would be a good idea?
50  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: The Last of US BoSs help (spoiler) on: September 29, 2014, 06:12:03 PM
This was a really cool boss fight. It reminded me of a boss battle from a Mario game (three single hits, three phases of the fight, each becoming more difficult, and then it's over), but it was so emotionally driven.

Just stopped by the Apple Store to check these things out in person.  The 6+ actually fit in my front pocket better than I expected, but I was wearing big-pocketed cargo shorts today.  I don't think it would be that comfortable in most of my jeans pockets, and I think it would be downright impossible to stow in some of my dress pants.

The 6- was comfortable in-pocket and in-hand, except for one handed use.  Browsing through some web pages and some system menus, it was immediately apparent that my thumb could no longer reach everywhere on the screen like it can on my 4s.

So I'm left a bit torn between getting the 5s or the 6- this fall.  I guess I'll likely get the 6- and just get used to the different handling.

I have the 5s and for work they're giving me the 6 next week. I'll literally be going back and forth between the two so I'll be able to make some good compare and contrasts.
52  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Let's talk Iphone on: September 26, 2014, 09:17:31 PM
It surprised me that Apple has made its new default screen size 4.7 inches with the iPhone 6... and scarier that so many people are buying the Plus. I had an HTC One X (4.7 inch screen) for two years and moved to the iPhone 5s because I wanted a smaller phone. My wife has a Note 3 (same size screen as the 6 Plus) which, because it certainly isn't going to fit in her skinny jeans pockets and she rarely carries a purse, I end up having to carry. If she had the 5s (or any smaller sized phone) she could fit it in her back pocket at least, which is what I do and is kinda annoying.

I don't think people realize how much one-handed utility you lose with the larger screens, either. It's super clumsy to hold so your normal operation of the device becomes two-handed which to me is counter-intuitive. The only time I use two hands with my 5s is when I'm typing, and even then I can still get away with one hand a lot because of suggestive/predictive typing. I was always fumbling with my One X.

Looking at pics on the larger screen sure is nice, though.
53  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Child of Light, a 2D sidescroller/RPG on: September 25, 2014, 04:12:57 PM
I just started playing this and am up to chapter 5. I love the art style, combat mechanics, the rhyming dialogue, and most of all the music. I'm playing on Hard per most people's recommendation and am enjoying the challenge level. The boss fights can be tough but not to a point of frustration, if I do poorly I pay for it in overuse of precious healing and mana potions.

Looking forward to seeing the "progression to adulthood" narrative play out.

You're also buying up an entire generation of kids that grew up with Minecraft.

The question in my mind is what Microsoft's long-term goal is with the IP. Is it to pimp the IP across various channels (gaming, merchandise, apparel, TV, etc.) or is it to establish a Nintendo caliber brand name for Windows/Xbox (as an entertainment/educational platform)? They say they will support current versions of the game on all platforms, but will the next iteration be exclusive to Microsoft platforms?

It's interesting to think about.

Yeah, that's an example of what I was talking about. I can't remember a developer going so far out of their way to tell people what they should think about a game as Bungie has with Destiny. Their spin machine is going full blast.

I don't think it's spinning as much as it is hand-holding, to be honest. Everyone's expectations seem to be in line with a shooter, while in reality it should be more in line with an MMO. In most MMOs the meaty content almost always comes later rather than sooner.

Sorry, everyone who thought this was going to be the next Halo...

Halo is one of my favorite sci-fi gaming series, I love the story, atmosphere, music, etc. I was hoping that, like Halo, even though most people play for the MP, there would be some good stuff in there for the solo people.

It's incredibly good, one of the best multiplayer modes that really flows out from the single player experience.

That said, there are some people that are way too good at the game, but it's still a fun mode to try if you have a good team.

I haven't quiet beaten the game but I must be so very close.  I plan on trying out the multiplayer before jumping into the dlc.  Colin at IGN doesn't like MP at all and he adamantly stated that TLOU Mp is the best he has played.

Kinda makes him less qualified, no?  Tongue

The second episode of the Metatheory podcast is up! Give it a listen, I think it's coming together quite nicely and each episode we get more comfortable recording.

We talk about some interesting stuff, including thoughts on PT, the legacy of Miyamoto vs. the legacy of Hideo, and social awareness withing the gaming community.

I was hoping to have an interview with Astro Gaming, who makes headphones for gamers and sponsors a lot of professional eSport players, baked into the show but my visit with them got cut short and we rescheduled the interview to be conducted during PAX.

I'm still figuring out how to get the sucker on iTunes and the like, that should start happening shortly.

I just started recording a new podcast for Gaming Trend (linky). The first episode was posted last Friday and I intend to keep a weekly cadence. Give it a listen if you're interested in exploring a new show.

Initially it's going to be a somewhat traditional gaming podcast but my goal is for it to evolve (sooner rather than later) into something much more interesting, think This American Life or Radio Lab but centered on gaming and other interactive media.

I'm still working out the technical kinks, you'll be able to subscribe via iTunes/Android Podcast apps soon. For now you can listen via browser.

I don't have any advice, I just want to say how envious I am that you can buy a home like that for $200k. I have an apartment in Silicon Valley (Sunnyvale) and as someone who is hoping to buy in the next 2-3 years (that's when my wife and I plan to start contributing to the overpopulation of the planet), it's looking hopeless unless I am willing to put up with a crazy commute, buy something in a shitty neighborhood, or accept charity from family. And I'm not OK with any of those options.

So congrats!
76  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PS3] The Last Of Us on: August 18, 2014, 04:21:00 PM
The hotel basement segment that you guys are talking about is where I gave up during the PS3 version. I just got through it in Remastered and I'm convinced they tweaked the difficulty because the bloaters go down way more quickly than I remember. I'm pretty sure two shotgun blasts and two fire bottles were all it took.

Either that or the funky framerate issues in the PS3 version were the culprit.
77  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Diablo III --Impressions start on page 36 -- on: August 18, 2014, 03:07:14 AM
I can probably find this in reviews, but is the only difference between the PC and PS4 versions going to be controller support or are there other fundamental gameplay changes?

Also, does the UI of the PS4 version better suit a TV than the PC version would if I were doing big picture mode with my PC?
78  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / If you want to be scared sh$tless, play PT, the playable teaser for Silent Hills on: August 15, 2014, 04:52:19 PM

I wasn't sure what PT was after reading about it through all the Gamescom announcements. I knew it was an interactive teaser, but I thought that meant it was a YouTube video that you could perhaps "click to continue" and link into branching trailers. I once worked with a PR firm that did something similar to that for Jennifer Lopez, where users were able to decide how she got to the Grammys.

Someone on Twitter said to search for PT in the PlayStation Store, which is what alerted me to the possibility that there was something more to it. Lo and behold, it's a game demo. And Gooood Lawwwd, is it terrifying. I mean, I've played the recent kings of horror, Amnesia and Outlast, and PT still tops them. It's not scarier, per se, it's not just about monsters popping out of nowhere and attacking you. It's... what Silent Hill does best. It's psychological terror, it sends shivers down your spine. At one point my wife walked out of the bedroom and into the living room where I was playing (it was late at night, she had already gone to bed) and I kid you not, I gasped for air out of fear.

Turn down the lights, put on headphones if you have them, and experience this thing. Silent Hills just won a customer.
