It's important to keep in mind that the Xbox One has sold 76% more units than the Xbox 360 did in its first 6 months, which means it's sold about 5.6m units compared to the 360's 3.2m in the same time span

They've not sold 5.6 million to customers.  They've shipped that many to retailers.  MS really did a great job confusing  people with that 5M number they put out there when Sony announced selling 7M to actual customers.

Either way the point is the same, MS is doing much better this generation (so far), purely from a sales standpoint. I'm not sure what the profit margins are on the One Vs the 360, though.

I'm willing to bet that had the price points been swapped, if the PS4 was $500 and the One was $400, it would be the One with 7m sold and PS4 with 5m shipped. Now that they're more evenly priced, it can be a battle more focused on who has the best content.

Also, 8 of the top 10 best-selling console games in April were on a MS console, according to NPD (see the source I linked earlier). Of course, NPD doesn't track digital so there may be more Sony games in that list then they are reporting, but it still gives you directional results.

Microsoft isn't doing bad, they just aren't doing as well as Sony. And despite all the drama surrounding the Kinect announcement, MS's trailing hardware sales has to do with costing $100 more than the PS4. If anything, the lesson for them isn't that they shouldn't have tried to integrate the Kinect with the Xbox One, it's that they should have figured out how to price their product more competitively.

I think we all should be more upset about the lack of quality games..  On both platforms.

Sequel sequel sequel...

In the 1st 6 months of this console gen I've been kept busy with The Show, Need for Speed, Infamous, Lego Marvel, AC4, Fifa 14, Killzone, CD Ghosts, Child of Light, Outlast, and BF4. That's a lot of good games, especially considering that history shows us that the first 6 months is usually a total drought. So I don't really get all the talk about there not being any good games. If I had an Xbox180 then I would add Dead Rising and Forza to the list.

I agree, I'm not on the "there's no games" boat. If there's no games it has less to do with the platform and more to do with the global content pipeline.

Heh, just checking back here for the first time since I posted. Didn't realize my choice of words would cause such a discussion. To clarify I didn't mean I was forced to use the product if I bought it, I meant that in order to purchase an Xbox one I had to support MS's Kinect business strategy, which I had no interest in at all. I wanted a new Xbox but didn't want to support the direction they were taking because Kinect was bundled in, thus "forcing it upon me" (maybe "down my throat" was too melodramatic). Consumers like me voted with their dollars and MS is making a change because of it. I consider it a win.

I bolded the key point that people who were debating Tilt were missing. That's how I understood your decision to not purchase a Kinect, even inadvertently as part of a discounted bundle package. You were signaling to Microsoft that not purchasing an XB1 was less about price and more about not supporting their Kinect strategy. I can dig that.

Also, like Tilt, I don't give a fuck about Halo, Forza, Gears of War, or Fable. Especially now that they aren't even being developed by the original teams. If Microsoft wants me to buy an XB1, I need an honest-to-God exclusive killer app (or two). Titanfall was a wet dream, not a Mario 64 or Final Fantasy 7 caliber system seller.

Sunset Overdrive and Quantum break need to come to PC... I'm not buying an XB1 just for those two games. The rest of the list is depressing; Halo without Bungie, Gears without Cliff, Fable without Molyneux...
47  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [XB1] Sunset Overdrive (Insomniac's latest) on: May 08, 2014, 05:08:06 PM
There's a cool article at Polygon where they talk with the developers about how they applied what their learned from Fuse and applied it to Sunset Overdrive.

The game looks fantastic, a shame it's Xbox One exclusive.

I looked at the full list (but admittedly overlooked The Order). Some of my lack of hype is probably just lack of familiarity with some of those IPs/developers.

It's actually not the sequels, like Uncharted and God of War, that have me excited, but rather the original stuff we haven't seen yet.
49  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [Rumored] Sony's E3 plans revealed? Killer lineup if it's true on: May 08, 2014, 04:44:16 PM
I'm not sure why The Last Guardian being listed for PS4 sounds bogus to anyone, the platform was never announced. Here's what Sony said two months ago:

... “not going to announce what platform it’s coming on, who’s working on it, who’s involved. But that is still a title that’s absolutely in the mix at Worldwide Studios. That’s the most you’re gonna get.”

"I love that people are still interested in it. That’s an honor to us. That’s not just me spinning… It’s really cool that people are still interested in it, and we’re trying to make the best thing we can out of The Last Guardian.”

That's a quote from Scott Rhode at Sony (Source).

50  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [Rumored] Sony's E3 plans revealed? Killer lineup if it's true on: May 08, 2014, 12:16:47 AM
Uncharted 4
Gran Turismo 6
God of War 4
New Ninja Theory game (possibly Heavenly Sword 2)
The Last Guardian on PS4
PS Now presence
PS3 and Vita price drops

Source

The games I listed are Sony's first-party heavy-hitters, but there's a lot of other interesting stuff in the report. If it proves to be true, I'll be sad I had to miss this year's show.

Thanks to all this indie content, I already have a considerable backlog on my PS4 alone. I've got AAA launch games I've barely touched because I've had so much fun with smaller titles.

Same here. The free indie stuff I get via PS Plus has kept me from making impulse purchases of AAA titles due to forum effect and whatnot.

I didn't play the original but I was aware of it, I remember thinking it looked cool but boring to play.

I watched the video for this reboot and felt the same way, so I didn't back it.
53  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Orbis. aka PlayStation 4? The rumors are put to rest. on: May 04, 2014, 04:04:45 PM
I can relate to YK's sentiment about small budget indie releases (I emphasize small budget because there are plenty of big budget games being released by indie developers like Gearbox). I used to feel the same but over time the ingenuity of the gameplay in the games won me over. Games like Dear Esther, Amnesia, Outlast,The Swapper, and Hotline Miami were some of my favorite games of recent.

Sony isn't trumpeting indie content as THE reason to own a PS4, they're just acknowledging the value it adds to it. I'm very happy with Sony's humble approach to indie developers.

Pre-loading games is big, so is being able to control the brightness on the controller LED. I don't care about all the new steaming and video recording stuff... what portion of PS4 users does that even affect, less than 5%?
57  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: When do you buy games? on: April 30, 2014, 06:20:02 PM

Way, way too early in the generation to start predicting winners and losers, anyhow.

We don't have a complete picture until we get the 360 data. Why would Titanfall create a substantial demand for XB1s with a comparable 360 version around the corner? It doesn't make sense to me.
65  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Orbis. aka PlayStation 4? The rumors are put to rest. on: April 18, 2014, 08:05:09 PM
It'll probably sell better on the 360 than the XB1, plus it was made by a smaller staff than a lot of AAA teams (like Infinity Ward or Irrational) so it shouldn't need to sell as much to make its money back.

Typing "Wii U internet connection" in a search engine brings up a lot of results so I know it's not a completely isolated situation.

What's a good alternative security setting for routers aside from WPA+WPA2?
67  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Wii U on: April 18, 2014, 04:57:23 PM
I received the system from Amazon last night and bought Super Mario 3D World from GameStop. Getting it to connect to my wifi was a huge hurdle, and the lack of an ethernet port is an outright dumb omission. After looking for help online I found that I had to manually configure the wifi connection which completely undermines Nintendo's philosophy of making their platform and games approachable for everyone. Not only that, but the network card is apparently a piece of shit because I have to have the Wii U in the same room as the router in order to hold a connection. So... online is a no-go with this machine for me.

I didn't have much time to play Mario after fucking around with the wifi settings and waiting for the system to update, but so far I'm really disappointed in the hardware.

It was hard to resist a Wii U after Super Mario 3D World released, but Mario Kart 8 looks so absolutely cool that I caved in and ordered one. I'm not a fan of the Gamepad, does the Pro controller serve most games well? In particular, 3D World and DK Jungle Freeze?

Google and Facebook make their money by selling our data, I know that. But what about Microsoft? Aside from the alleged Kinect stuff, is Microsoft selling the data they collect when using their services like Bing and Hotmail, or just using it internally?

I tried searching around for this but couldn't find any credible sources.

Which means that my $400 machine runs a game that looks better than your $700-$1500 machine.

Which isn't to put down sleeping dogs, but there's also a lot of subtle differences as well.

The incidental objects in the next gen games are more varied and common. There's more building styles and textures for them. Infamous also has a bigger vertical aspect.

There's less real-time reflections going on the past gen game as well.

In the end, if you're making an open world game set in a city, eventually you're going to get a lot of parallels since there's only so many extra effects you can throw in.

Keep in mind that Sleeping Dogs came out almost two years ago. I'm not that impressed with Second Son's graphics from a raw technical perspective, which is fine because I don't go to consoles (PS4 and XBO included) for high-end graphics, but I am hoping for advances in other areas such as animation, AI, gameplay, etc. If all it ends up being is a better looking version of the previous games, I don't think it deserves being labeled a definitive next-gen experience. We should hold our standards higher than that.

What game would you say is your current standard bearer for next gen then?

Are graphics your only metric for measuring advancements in a video game? New generations are marked by the likes of the Mario 64s and GTA3s, not by a game like Second Son which is just a graphical upgrade to last generation's game.

That's the way I see it, at least. I would have stopped gaming a long time ago if all there was to look forward to was improved graphics.
