About how long is the game Travis?

Are the textures sharp in the Xbox version Travis?

I don't think you can steer the jump jet midair, whichever direction you're pointing before the jump is where you go. I always have the jump jet equipped, it's saved my ass from grenades and from being completely surrounded on numerous occasions.
44  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Ori and the Blind Forest - a platformer made around the world on: March 11, 2015, 05:01:21 PM
Ori and the Blind Forest just became available on Xbox One and PC today. I started playing the PC version this morning and it reminded me of Dust: An Elysian Tale, which prompted me to look into who made the game and learn that it was actually developed by a virtual team around the world. Kinda neat, and hence the thread title.

So far it's an interesting game, it's a side-scrolling platformer with elements of puzzle solving. The art is really pretty and most people seem to love the graphics... but I'm somewhat turned off by the soft, painterly look to them. Sometimes I'm not sure if that softness is due to running the game in 1440P and the art assets being low res. Can anyone report on the Xbox One version of the PC version at 1080?

GT's review is up and I'll post more impressions soon.

I bought it during that sale too because the Giant Bomb crew spoke highly of it during their GOTY debates. I'm looking forward to trying it out .

By the way,  Angry Joe's review of the game is pretty great. He's right about some of the tedium and repetitiveness, but I don't think it's anything that can't be fixed with some gameplay tweaks. I still really enjoy hunting down monsters.
51  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PS4, XB1, PC] Evolve (from Turtle Rock) on: February 24, 2015, 05:07:06 PM
I can't speak for the monster since I never play as it, but I don't feel like the hunter classes are too difficult to unlock. It's fun working towards unlocking them and feels rewarding once you do.

I'm super excited for this. Regarding the Vita version... I imagine it would be hard to keep track of the action on such a small screen. But then again I haven't played a lot of Vita games so maybe it's fine.

Hey everyone! Sean Lama here. I’ve been a part of the GT community since back when it was called Console Gold, and before that a part of the Gone Gold scene. I’ve been writing for Gaming Trend for about 9 years now, which is a long time but there’s definitely been moments where I've had to step back from the work here and focus on other parts of my life. I’ve grown up with the GT community, going through various phases of my life, such as college, relationships, and so on, while being a part of it. On occasion I’ve even come to GT for support, like when I got laid off for the first time and wasn’t sure how to deal with it.

GT has evolved quite a bit over the years. The operation is run as tight as any professional organization that I’ve been a part of, and remains an excellent conduit for new writers to get their start in the industry as well as a fun place to be for those of us who simply like producing content about video games in their spare time. Currently I’m focused on hosting the Metatheory podcast, but also write feature editorials and occasionally review games.

Outside of GT I’m a part of the Business Intelligence team at Apple, I’m newly married and living in the SF Bay Area.

Nice to re-meet you all!

I'm surprised more people here aren't playing the game, I thought it was the first big title of the year for most.

It might have been until I played the alpha/beta tests.  That experience went a lot like the early impressions since it came out: a lot of running, a lot of feeling ineffective and not a lot of actual fun.  I think unless you have a crew of people that you specifically want to play with, this isn't going to hold most people's interest.

In the beginning you have trouble finding the Monster, but the more you play, the better you get and the higher your player progression gets. Eventually you'll be matched with more experienced players based on your ranking.

The initial learning curve is sorta steep, but you can make the process go smoother by playing single player matches with bots for a while. And if you even have one other friend in your group the game is exponentially more fun.

I'm about to hit rank 12 and just unlocked the third Assault character. Still having a blast with the game.
59  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PS4, XB1, PC] Evolve (from Turtle Rock) on: February 16, 2015, 08:34:46 PM
My primary class at the moment is Trapper. Initially I was reliant on Daisy (as Maggie) to lead me to the monster but now I'm a bit more of a trailblazer, no longer utilizing Daisy so much. My strategy is when I see the birds indicator, I look at the map and try to anticipate which direction the Monster is moving. The more familiar you are with a map the better you are at it. Now I often spot the monster in the direction of its trajectory, rather than endlessly training behind it, so I'll start placing markers for the rest of the team to follow, dash near the monster, and drop the arena. Then I dash away from it, all the while laying harpoons to keep it from reaching me while the calvary rides in.

I've also started playing Assault a bit more. It's quite a fun class and I'm impressed by how different it feels from the trapper. As a Trapper I don't have any time to mess with wildlife because I'm trying to find the monster as quickly as possible, but Assault is so powerful you can use the close ranged weapon to kill wildlife along the way. It's both fun, because you get to shoot shit, and you gain XP quicker.

I'm surprised more people here aren't playing the game, I thought it was the first big title of the year for most.

It's interesting that ya'll seem to be focusing on playing as the Monster and you're discussing killing Hunters. I've been playing as a Hunter and I'm trying to figure out how to kill the Monster. It's like we're in different factions (think Horde/Alliance in WoW).
61  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PS4, XB1, PC] Evolve (from Turtle Rock) on: February 12, 2015, 05:21:39 PM
If it makes you feel any better, Bullwinkle, in the five SP matches I've played as a Hunter I've never won a match. The monster moves so damn fast that I'm always disoriented during battles with it. I'm slowly getting better, though.

Also, at least you're making XP progression all the while which will open up new perks and such.
62  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Eurogamer drops review scores on: February 11, 2015, 09:08:59 PM
I agree with Bullwinkle.

It's probably true that Metacritic enables these problems, but the solution isn't to punish Metacritic, it's to hold the companies exploiting people accountable. The fact is, if a company wanted to, they could very easily create their own aggregations for a particular game (an entry level data analyst could accomplish this task in a day). Unless ALL review sites got rid of their review scores entirely, there's no way not to come up with an aggregated number. And even if they did that, you could essentially boil down a review to positive or negative and come up with a number that way.

Business people are trained to use numbers in their favor, it comes down to whether those people are behaving ethically or not.

I played through the tutorials this morning and found myself having a great time. Some friends and I are planning to get into some multiplayer matches this week. Here's my quick take:

*note: PS4 version

+ Cool CG intro sequence
+ Super helpful tutorial
+ Clean user interface (menu and in-game)
+ Monster looks great, lots of detail in the model
+ If you don't want to play online against people you can play with bots
+ Decent array of abilities for Monster and Hunters
+ Great maneuverability; jetpack, dash, wall climb

- Occasional framerate dips
- No story based SP campaign (not really knocking the game for this, just making a mention)

So far I'm pleasantly surprised.
65  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Eurogamer drops review scores on: February 10, 2015, 10:53:59 PM
Why does Metacritic deserve to share blame for what individual companies do, vis-a-vis bonuses, hiring policies, etc?

This is the hypocrisy I see in the "Metacritic needs to die" argument:

GamerKid420:
A) sees a good Metacritic score for Evolve
b) reads Eurogamer's review for Evolve which labels it "essential" or "recommended"
c) reads Joystiq's review, which doesn't use any single-point indicators, but is mostly positive

GamerKid420 buys and ends up disliking Evolve because subjectivity is a bitch. But because video game pubs/devs use Metacritic for shady practices, simply for the fact that it's convenient to do so (what if Metacritic "dies" and companies start hiring data/BI analysts to compile their own aggregations internally for the same purpose?), GamerKid420 blames Metacritic for misleading him/her/claims no gender.

The root of the problem, if there is one, is the concept of the "review" in the first place. That's why places like GiantBomb started doing quick look videos, so people have the opportunity to form their own opinions rather than having to base their purchasing decision on someone else's.

And if you don't like a company's shady tactics, don't buy their products or work for them.
66  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: TurboTax or an Accountant? on: February 06, 2015, 05:14:08 PM
I've been using Turbo Tax for a long time and it's been great, but when I got married and started filing married/filing separately and now this year married/filing jointly it got all fucked up. The software imports my W2 form and all the numbers so there's almost nothing I need to do, and somehow I end up owing a bunch of money.

I don't get it, so at least for the peace of mind we're filing at H&R Block this year.
67  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Gravity Ghost on: February 06, 2015, 06:24:37 AM
I posted my review for this game today. Did anyone else play it? It's a super short game, very simplistic, but with a unique art style, great sci-fi soundtrack from the guy who did the FTL soundtrack, and a surprisingly deep story. It's fairly lacking in the gameplay department, though, so don't bother with the game if you're looking for a challenging puzzle/platformer. I recommend it if you're looking for something unique and quirky to kill a couple hours with.
68  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: What's your biggest gaming disappointment/sleeper hit of 2014? on: February 02, 2015, 08:57:31 PM
The biggest surprise to me was World of Warcraft: Warlords of Draenor. I had no idea it would suck me back into the game like it did, to the point where I'm interested in the whole universe all over again and rolling new characters to revisit the old content. I also have to give a shoutout to Child of Light which captured my imagination.

Biggest disappointment? The Evil Within. Almost immediately after starting the game I could tell it wasn't going to be a worthy spiritual successor to Resident Evil and not a good action/horror game in its own right.

71  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PS3,360,PS4,XB1,PC] Grand Theft Auto V on: January 14, 2015, 04:04:35 PM
I'm definitely not making the case that violent and sexually explicit video games are going to encourage anyone to imitate them.

I guess I'm trying to figure out how to transition from playing video games without worrying about other people, like family, being inadvertently exposed to the explicit content. When I was single it wasn't an issue, but now with my wife around (who hasn't grown up with video games like I have) it feels weird. And the idea of playing it only when no one is around, or otherwise "hiding" what I'm doing, feels awkward.

You guys are right, through. The game is labeled with an M rating so the due diligence on their part is done, it's me who has to be more conscious about what I'm purchasing.
72  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PS3,360,PS4,XB1,PC] Grand Theft Auto V on: January 09, 2015, 06:20:54 AM
I just started playing the game last week... Is anyone else turned off by the nature of the explicit content? I know I've become more sensitive towards mature content in entertainment since getting married and living with my wife, but it seems way too vulgar. The strip clubs actually show bare breasts, the dialogue is pretty harsh (particularly when Trevor is talking), the violence is not as "cartoony" as it used to be with Trevor smashing people's heads in left and right.

Maybe I'm not remembering clearly, but I thought GTA IV was classier about its content.

Great game, but it absolutely overstayed its welcome. On four separate occasions I thought the game was complete, and then I got sent on some benign FedEx run to pull a switch or turn a knob. Aliens Isolation was quickly rising into my top 5 games of the year, but quickly devolved into mediocrity by the end.

kudos to Creative Assembly for nailing the atmosphere of Aliens, but they still need to learn a thing or two about pacing. And like that relative that overstays his or her welcome during the holidays, they need to learn when enough is enough. If most of the last three hours had been scrapped or shortened, the game would have been stellar. They could have saved a bunch of development costs AND made a better experience.

In fact, I ended up YouTubing the ending...and was surprised to see I still had about an hour left.

That's what's keeping me from the game. I just don't have the patience to slog through a 20ish hour suspenseful campaign.

75  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: The end of a gaming era on: December 08, 2014, 10:32:23 PM
Of course this had to turn into a graphics debate  retard

Three points of reference for my "dishonesty":

Digital Foundry's analysis of The Crew, Far Cry 4, and Call of Duty. They point out little difference between the XB1 and PS4 versions of these recent high-profile games.

I think the graphics debate is a dumb one so I listed credible sources to defend against being called dishonest. My bigger point is that whether you buy an Xbox One or a PS4 you get modern hardware, not just in terms of graphics but in terms of networking capabilities, online services, and so on.
76  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: The end of a gaming era on: December 08, 2014, 08:00:10 PM
I think the largest value proposition for the Xbox 360 was the fact that most people were doing their online gaming on it rather than the PS3. That began to change towards the end of the console cycle as Sony improved PSN, and it's certainly not the case this generation.

The XB1 and PS4 are at hardware parity, despite a few hardly discernible advantages in the PS4 versions of some games, so it really comes down to exclusives and what platform your friends own. In addition to Sunset Overdrive, Halo 5, and Quantum Break, as mentioned before, there is also Tomb Raider, Below, Massive Chalice, and likely others to consider.
