Eurogamer has a great article discussing the external processor of the PSVR and its potential role in delivering a good VR experience. I didn't realize the screen was going to be a 120Hz OLED panel... I love me some OLED.

Those are first week retail sales in the US from NPD. I'm using those numbers because that seems to be the basis on which everyone is saying Rise sold 70% less than the first game during its launch month.

The alpha ended last Saturday but the beta kicks off early next year. You can get a beta key from pre-ordering and once you get access you can actually invite additional people to the beta... but I also might have some keys to pass out =)

You guys make fantastic points but I really believe that Microsoft anticipated these sales and structured the deal accordingly. Let's look at launch month numbers for TR on PS3 and 360:

PS3: 275,000 units
360: 330,000 units

We don't know if MS expected Rise to do equal, better, or worse than the first game, but let's take the average of the two platforms and use that as the target first month sales for the game on one platform: 300,000 (i'm rounding). They must have also factored into their forecasts that November is one of the most competitive months of the year.

Also keep in mind that the first Tomb Raider launched on March 5, 2014, vs. Rise which launched on Nov 10, 2015, giving the first game almost an extra week of sales before being tallied by NPD. Could 200k be THAT far off from their expectations? The studio director said both MS and SE are happy with the game's performance, I believe it.

Your speculation would have sounded a lot better if it wasn't for Square Enix' public disappointment in the previous Tomb Raider's 3.4 million sold copies in 4 weeks. Rise of the Tomb Raider is a disaster for them and a borderline embarrassment for Microsoft, both because of lacking sales and because of the bad press they caused with the exclusivity, which they're still getting raked over the coals because of. Buying this kind of exclusivity is expensive, and there's no chance in hell that Microsoft got even a fraction of their investment back. Square Enix may recoup some of their losses with the PC and PS4 versions, but by that time it will be too little, too late.

All we can do at this point is hope that the industry as a whole learned from this mess of an anti-consumer backroom deal. Judging by how Sony suddenly started being a lot clearer about the exclusivity status of their titles right after Microsoft's backlash, it at least sounds like they got scared by the whole thing.

Would Square Enix event be the primary stakeholder of this game, or would that be Microsoft? I think Microsoft is taking the brunt of the sales impact which is why the deal went forward in the first place. And if that's the case, Microsoft may have different metrics for success than Square Enix which is what I was alluding to.

The game will come out on PS4 next year, will look great, have all sorts of nice quotes on the cover and it will sell fine.

I don't know we'll see. NPD is out and based on the leaks it did just 200k in the US for launch month, that's a 70% decline from the previous Tomb Raider's first month. Unless it has an unprecedentedly amazing second month or picks up enough GotY wins to propel sales it's pretty much a bomb and that will potentially haunt its future releases, with PC users possibly expecting quick price drops on Steam sales. Also with the game being released later on other platforms they practically will have to include all DLC with the game, so they lose out on DLC sales as well on those units.

There's a reasonable chance this release has killed this iteration of the franchise and this will be the last TR game we see for quite some time, which is a shame as they have been of high quality.

200k is low, but I'm not sure it's low enough against internal expectations to be considered a failure. Square Enix (publisher) wasn't even behind making the game, it was Microsoft who stepped in and provided assistance in order to add another exclusive to their Holiday 2015 lineup. It's going to continue selling over Christmas and it's part of what has enabled Microsoft to claim 2015 as "the best lineup in Xbox history". Moreso than simply unit sales, it's made the Xbox platform more attractive to a lot of people, even if a lot of those people don't end up buying Tomb Raider.

-On a 4K television the game is a hot mess. It looks like an early PS3 game in terms of jaggies and soft textures. I can see the beauty in the design, but the textures ruin the experience. Many of my PS3 and Xbox 360 games look much better than this, and THAT generation is dead and buried. Its a shame to see the creative vision limited by the WiiU hardware, but only graphic whores will be displeased.

How do PS4 and XB1 games look to you on your 4K set? I brought my PS4 to a Fry's electronics and tried out a variety of 4K sets across multiple games and they all looked bad.

55  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Final Fantasy VII remake for PS4 on: December 08, 2015, 05:57:22 PM
They said that going episodic was really the only way to get the job done properly, so it was this or nothing. They're going way beyond I think what most people were expecting from a remake; changing the combat and altering the gameplay in general, adding new content, using a new graphics engine, etc.

In my opinion, this is how "remasters" should be done. Rebuild it from the ground up, don't just increase the resolution and update the UI. It's great to see FF7 and Resident Evil 2 going this route.

Getting my first headshot through a wall was one of my most epic gaming moments in quite a while. I'm sure in other games I've shot enemies in the head through objects, but the context around it in Siege is what makes the difference. It started out with a terrorist initiating the shootout through the wall with his shotgun, when he decided to run to the door of the room I was in I started shooting at where I imagined his body would be and nailed him right in the head. The red X that pops up when you get a headshot is perfect.

Just a tip - the only graphics setting that gives me issues is AA. I had to turn AA down to FXAA, one notch down from MSAA + FXAA, to get a smooth framerate. Everything else was maxed and at 1440p.
59  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / PS2 emulation on the PS4 is an exciting prospect on: November 20, 2015, 05:46:58 PM
When I first heard that Star Wars games from the PS2 era were included with the PS4 version of Battlefront, I didn't think much of it. Then I watched this video and now I'm genuinely excited about the prospect of playing emulated PS2 games. The SW games look great and run really well at an upscaled resolution and increased framerate. Outside of official remasters this could be a great opportunity to replay some PS2 classics.

66  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: So are the Steam forums always filled with so many immature people? on: October 29, 2015, 05:08:08 PM
Definitely stick to smaller communities, like Tilt suggested. And when it comes to online games, find a good guild or team and don't socialize too much outside of it. It's sad to say, but video games are especially attractive to a particular type of person - the less educated and less accomplished. Some of this is simply due to age - I was a dumb teenager saying stupid things online at one point. But a lot of the problem stems from the fact that people are, literally, idiots. They don't have the same refinements that come from going to college or working in a professional environment. Additionally, internet is a bastion for certain personality types - the anti-social and the cynical. Naturally, because who would want to be around them? So, even if a person isn't doing anything overtly offensive, there's a lot of insidious rhetoric in the stuff they're saying.

So, I stick to places like GT and Qt3 and avoid places like NeoGAF, Steam forums, and comment sections.

The PC version is finally back on sale (see patch notes), but there's still a way to go until it's considered not a shitty port. For example, it still doesn't take advantage of multiple video cards, which is what I'm waiting for before I play the game.

I really need to stop looking for data pads. Kills the game (just like in every other fps, when will I learn?)

This is me, too.

In most games, I find I miss all the spectacular set-pieces.  I am looking behind a rock when I hear a music change or a loud noise or someone saying, "Wow, did you ever think you'd see such a thing?"  By the time I turn around, it's over.

I find this to be a common issue in games. I'm trying to be thorough but the game wants to usher me forward through its scripted sequences.

I've put around 10 hours into the game so far and I'm really enjoying the story and setting. I didn't play Unity so the last AC game I played was Black Flag. My immediate gripe is that the game has a lot of odd behavior. NPCs disappearing and or bugging out, clipping through objects, people disappearing, and so on. I don't remember it being so prevalent in BF. Or it might just be that the last string of open world games I've played, like The Witcher 3 and MGS5, are cleaner. Anyhow, it gives it a cheaply made feeling that can be a bit of a turn off. The other thing I'm not too fancy for is the framerate, which is solid when not around crowds but dips when you are. The dips aren't major but definitely noticeable, and you do run through crowds quite a bit.

As I mentioned, the setting, i.e. 19th century London, is gorgeous. It's everything I hoped it would be and more, in fact. If it's one thing Ubisoft always gets right, it's the worlds they build. I love running through the city, I don't even bother with fast travel or other modes of transportation outside of running and the rope because it's a joy to take everything in. And there's still fun to be had assassinating people and climbing buildings, even though it feels extremely familiar at this point. The main characters, Evie and Jacob, as well as the supporting cast, are all interesting and likable. The story itself is very coherent - London is corrupt to the core and you aim to take it back.

The main gameplay supplemented by side quests, as usual, but what I'm really enjoying is building up my gang, the Rooks, and gaining new territory. You basically challenge rival gangs and once you defeat them you take over their territory. Opening new territory installs your Rooks, who you can call upon to help you if you see them around, and opens up the area for side quests and collecting.

I plan to spend a lot of time with the game this weekend and I'll post more impressions. So far this is a solid title... nothing groundbreaking, but fun nonetheless.
