Ron's review is up on the front page.

I'm deciding to leave this one to memory since it's not a complete rebuild of the game. Hopefully a new generation of people will get to enjoy it, though.

43  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PS3,360,PS4,XB1,PC] Grand Theft Auto V on: January 14, 2015, 04:04:35 PM
I'm definitely not making the case that violent and sexually explicit video games are going to encourage anyone to imitate them.

I guess I'm trying to figure out how to transition from playing video games without worrying about other people, like family, being inadvertently exposed to the explicit content. When I was single it wasn't an issue, but now with my wife around (who hasn't grown up with video games like I have) it feels weird. And the idea of playing it only when no one is around, or otherwise "hiding" what I'm doing, feels awkward.

You guys are right, through. The game is labeled with an M rating so the due diligence on their part is done, it's me who has to be more conscious about what I'm purchasing.
44  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PS3,360,PS4,XB1,PC] Grand Theft Auto V on: January 09, 2015, 06:20:54 AM
I just started playing the game last week... Is anyone else turned off by the nature of the explicit content? I know I've become more sensitive towards mature content in entertainment since getting married and living with my wife, but it seems way too vulgar. The strip clubs actually show bare breasts, the dialogue is pretty harsh (particularly when Trevor is talking), the violence is not as "cartoony" as it used to be with Trevor smashing people's heads in left and right.

Maybe I'm not remembering clearly, but I thought GTA IV was classier about its content.

Great game, but it absolutely overstayed its welcome. On four separate occasions I thought the game was complete, and then I got sent on some benign FedEx run to pull a switch or turn a knob. Aliens Isolation was quickly rising into my top 5 games of the year, but quickly devolved into mediocrity by the end.

kudos to Creative Assembly for nailing the atmosphere of Aliens, but they still need to learn a thing or two about pacing. And like that relative that overstays his or her welcome during the holidays, they need to learn when enough is enough. If most of the last three hours had been scrapped or shortened, the game would have been stellar. They could have saved a bunch of development costs AND made a better experience.

In fact, I ended up YouTubing the ending...and was surprised to see I still had about an hour left.

That's what's keeping me from the game. I just don't have the patience to slog through a 20ish hour suspenseful campaign.

I just started playing FC3 for the first time this month and I feel the same way. I really don't like the characters and the overall feel of the game - it reminds me of a reality show on MTV.
47  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: The end of a gaming era on: December 08, 2014, 10:32:23 PM
Of course this had to turn into a graphics debate  retard

Three points of reference for my "dishonesty":

Digital Foundry's analysis of The Crew, Far Cry 4, and Call of Duty. They point out little difference between the XB1 and PS4 versions of these recent high-profile games.

I think the graphics debate is a dumb one so I listed credible sources to defend against being called dishonest. My bigger point is that whether you buy an Xbox One or a PS4 you get modern hardware, not just in terms of graphics but in terms of networking capabilities, online services, and so on.
48  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: The end of a gaming era on: December 08, 2014, 08:00:10 PM
I think the largest value proposition for the Xbox 360 was the fact that most people were doing their online gaming on it rather than the PS3. That began to change towards the end of the console cycle as Sony improved PSN, and it's certainly not the case this generation.

The XB1 and PS4 are at hardware parity, despite a few hardly discernible advantages in the PS4 versions of some games, so it really comes down to exclusives and what platform your friends own. In addition to Sunset Overdrive, Halo 5, and Quantum Break, as mentioned before, there is also Tomb Raider, Below, Massive Chalice, and likely others to consider.

Microsoft was really smart about decoupling the Kinect from the Xbox One and pricing aggressively over the Holidays. I wouldn't be surprised if they caught up to Sony over the course of the Holiday season.

As accessible as these games are supposed to be there's actually a decent learning curve. I haven't played a Smash Bros game in a long time, but I was hoping my wife and I might be able to jump into this the way we did Mario Kart 8. That hasn't been the case, though, and we're both kinda turned off by it at the moment. Any advice or links to a good beginner's guide?

Article on Tweaktown, GTA V will have 'just for PC' features, including a video editor

Quote
Grand Theft Auto V launched for the previous generation consoles last year, and only last week for the Xbox One and PS4, but it looks like Rockstar has a few tricks up its sleeve for the PC version of the open-world fun-a-thon.

WCCFTech is reporting that the PC version of GTA V will include a video editor mode, which is a 'Just for PC' feature. This feature alone would be a great addition to GTA V, and would fit better on the PC version thanks to the mouse and keyboard combination. Extending on this feature, is the ability to mod the game, something that turned GTA IV on the PC into something absolutely remarkable.

Grand Theft Auto V launches on the PC on January 27, 2015.

Excellent. I've been holding out for the PC version and I can't wait for it.

That was a great trailer, it made me excited for the game. Does it seem like the core game has changed much aside from the addition of the Batmobile?

I hope the PC version turns out better this time around, the last two (haven't tried Origins) weren't spectacular.

I can't believe I'm getting tempted to step back into WoW.  How is Draenor for solo play?

I did 90-100 solo, there were only a handful of occasions where I need help but there were other people leveling who jumped in and assisted on taking down a tough enemy.

So the game is going to be like WoW raids.

It's similar to an MMO or MOBA in that there are abilities with cooldown times. Pretty much everything - there are exceptions - except for the Hero's main ability has a cool-down after use.

I played the hell out of this at BlizzCon and will be posting my impressions soon. If you think Overwatch is anything like TF2 or any other shooter you've played before, you're absolutely wrong.

On the one hand Blizzard games have always been pretty compelling for me, but on the other as mentioned in other threads FPS is just not my genre.  I think the best I can hope for is that one of the characters will be different enough to fit/click with me.  This means a class that doesn't require a lot of jumping and aiming skills lol.

Blizzard explicitly said that they do not want Overwatch to only be accessible to "twitch" style players, there are defensive and support classes that are focused on healing, buffing, and utility (like building turrets, for example).

I honestly didn't realize we were at this point with publishers pulling out of Steam (aside from EA, obviously).

I just upgraded from a 770 2GB to a 970 4GB (i7-377k, 8GB RAM). I can certainly play all games maxed with a solid 60fps framerate now. Once you have a high-end graphics card, if you have funds to spare you should jump to a 1440p monitor.

I can't explain how but the console versions look better than the PC version. Even on my PC at 1440p resolution and everything maxed, the game simply looks cleaner on consoles whereas the PC version maintains that painterly/slightly blurry look. Has anyone else noticed this?
