My sister loves horror movies and when we were living under the same roof she would watch me play horror games once in a while. I invited her to come over and play through some of Until Dawn with me, seems like the perfect game for that.

Man, this went from "no way" to "can't miss." I need another open world game like I need a hole in the head, and I haven't even played a Metal Gear game since the first one on NES, but it sounds soooooo good.

I finally got around to playing Ground Zeroes and was blown the fuck away. I couldn't believe how cinematic it was. Between that and the glowing reviews I have to play PP.

Is there an easy way to watch all the cutscenes from all the previous games?  I assume they're on youtube, but didn't know if you guys had a better way to find/view them.

You realize that would take many, many hours? There's a cutscene in one of the games that's over an hour long. There are some decent summaries of the story up until this point, I've watched/read a few of them and... still don't really get it aside from the really high level stuff.

I upgraded last night and save for a weird situation during the install where I had to move my bootmgr file manually, everything went well. I love the new interface, it feels modern, clean, and intuitive. And on an SSD it boots ridiculously fast. I played about an hour of WoW and had no issues.

Until Dawn.

Length is reportedly around the 8-12 hour range so I'm hoping I can make my way through it before Metal Gear hits... although with PAX Prime this weekend that may be hard.
15  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PS4] Until Dawn on: August 24, 2015, 04:49:37 PM
GT review is up!

Until Dawn is a fun ride, and one I was sad to see end. Thereís really no other experience like it out there, merging narrative adventure with horror charm and a brilliant photorealist aesthetic. The story begs for the player to comb back over, both to find every shred of info and to find a way to save everyone by dawn. Short documentaries are included as well, a personal favorite of mine for  unlockable features, which let you delve into the making of the game through every stage of development. While it isnít perfect, it serves to be something fresh, interesting, and memorable, certain to be fun whether youíre enjoying it with friends or sitting home alone, with the blinds shut and headphones on, pale-white knuckles wrapped on your controller, just hoping that the next corner wonít spell doom for your favorite character.

This is only the second game ever, after Mario Kart, that my wife has enjoyed enough to ask me if I wanted to play. The preservation of our species is just a tiny bit more secure.

It's all the small touches, like the gear auto-equipping if it's better so we don't constantly have to be bogged down with inventory and gear management. Or if she wants to respond to a text, she can put the controller down and her character will automatically follow me around.

I've gotten three jobs with my current resume format, including Apple and last month Ubisoft. I'd say the format is probably acceptable most places. It goes roughly like this (in order):

- Contact Info
- Qualifying summary: three bullet points that summarize why I'm a fit for the role
- work history
- technical competencies
- education

My resume is two pages long (not necessarily using the full second page). I can send you a copy of my resume for reference if interested.

I've had great luck with the voice commands and the dance games.  I use them as exercise.

I never keep my xbox in sleep mode.  It's either on, or off.  If you're using the always on mode, you're doing it wrong.  So many games mess up with that mode as well since it doesn't re-initiate network connections properly or handle memory well in that mode.  Half the time you have to restart anyway.  Only downside is you can't download updates automatically this way and they will kick off when you turn it on if one is available.

Every time I've had to use my XB1 without voice available (I take it to my sister's and don't take Kinect) I realize just how useful the feature is as I often find myself saying the commands anyway then having to remember the other way to do it.

It's interesting you bring this up, I've wondered how the memory management was affected using the Xbox One's suspend mode since on my PC I've definitely noticed a difference in game performance if I keep the system running without a restart for long periods. I think I've experienced weird framerate issues in Watch Dogs because of this as well.

I was underwhelmed by the new WoW expansion reveal at first, for some reason I was expecting more sweeping changes to the core gameplay. It looks like they're correcting some mistakes, such as revamping PVP and adding a neutral capital city, and adding new content per usual with a new expansion. The aspect of Legion that intrigues me, and this is something the devs have been talking about, is making the feel of the classes, and specifically your spec, more significant. Kind of like when playing as a Shadow Priest you take on a shadow form which embodies the nature of the class/spec. I'm hoping that fleshes out in Legion.

I thought Microsoft's presentation was fantastic, especially considering E3 was only a couple of months ago.

Sorry for helping turn this into a Witcher 3 complaint thread but...  icon_lol I'm in the same boat... I've put around 25 hours into the game so far and don't find it that interesting. The graphics are beautiful but the environments are dull, in my opinion. I much prefer the ultra stylized look of RPGs like WoW or Final Fantasy.

Anyways, I ended up playing through the Starcraft 2: Legacy of the Void prologue missions, leveling an alt in WoW, finishing Episode 3 of Life is Strange, and played a few more missions in Watch Dogs.

Agree completely with your last paragraph.  It's a good start, not near what I wanted, but if they can improve like UC and AC (to an extent at least), I'm in intrigued.

I personally feel Ubisoft have lost their touch and of all large developers I've lost way more faith in them.

I think Ubi is still in touch with reality. They've acknowledged most of their issues (technical issues, graphics downgrades, etc) and have vowed to rectify the problems. For example, Ubisoft has shown more confidence with AC Syndicate, demoing large amounts of content, in real-time, well ahead of release. I'm expecting this release to follow the tradition of good year / bad year / good year and be a good AC year  icon_cool

I have to throw a disclaimer out: Next week I'll be an Ubisoft employee, so my perspective is biased.
24  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [E3 2012] Watch Dogs on: July 20, 2015, 04:05:31 PM
I'm finally getting around to playing this. It's interesting to see the approach to sandbox here as it relates to other sandbox games. It's doesn't have the ambitious size and detail of a GTA or AC game, although I'm still on Act 1 so perhaps more will open up, but somehow they've packed a lot of personality into it. The high tech / hacker motif is ingrained in everything. I also think hacking was implemented really well - it's fun to infiltrate buildings using a mix of hacks and combat, or to hack the traffic lights at an intersection as you pass through it so pursuers run into the traffic.

At first I was overwhelmed by the amount of side stuff to do, so I just ignored it all and over time slowly started dabbling in them. Most of the side stuff seems to unlock new skills, so it's a cool approach to simply participate in the activities that unlock a skill you're interested in.

Overall I think this is a good starting point for a new franchise. I'm hoping Watch Dogs 2 follows the lead of games like Assassin's Creed 2 and Uncharted 2 which expanded and improved on the original game.

Aside from the Batmobile has the game evolved much over its predecessors? I feel content with what I experienced in the first two games and Arkham Knight does not appear to have changed in any significant way. If it's just more of the same Batman we've come to know, I'd prefer to spend my gaming time on a fresher experience.

Awesome... don't have time to troubleshoot this right now but it crashes during the new game opening cinematic. They show the dude, he raises his arms and roars and then I'm back at the desktop. Hopefully there's a log somewhere, otherwise I'll just randomly start turning things down / off from the defaults it picked for me. disgust

ps. Did this both before and after I updated to the latest "just in time for Witcher 3" Nvidia drivers.

Monkeyfingers are you letting the Geforce Experience optimize the game for your card?   This might help as you might be running the game too high for your system.  Just a suggestion

Geforce Experience has never worked well for me. It gives me the same settings whether I'm in SLI mode or not, for example. It also has a different definition of "optimal" than I do, because I don't think a frequently dipping framerate makes sense but Geforce does. There's a slider you can move between "performance" and "quality" but I haven't found that reliable either.

I've put an hour into the game so far and it looks absolutely incredible. I'm playing on PC with all settings maxed (the hair fx turned off) at 1440p. What's also great is how human people actually look; eyes that display emotion, subtle head motions, etc. I can't believe how much detail there is in the environments.

So given the feedback - is this one a yea or a nea? I'm definitely interested, but if they're going to make it obnoxious to play with people I want to, and the community at large is now either made of griefers or just unforgiving to new players, this sounds like a miss.

This is absolutely a yea. Still the most fun I've had with a game so far this year.

I'm going to say something that might sound hyperbolic or like I'm getting ahead of myself, but I think Helldivers is not only going to be my GOTY, but also the best game I've played in at least 5 years (possibly since World of Warcraft).

I've been playing consistently since before it came out (I reviewed it for GT) and it's been a blast, but last night the experience was on another level. I played from about 10PM to 4AM last night with two of my friends - I never play games that long or late anymore - and it was ridiculously fun. I mean, forget the satisfaction you get from the combat, completing missions and leveling up. I was laughing so much I was in tears. The way Helldivers handles friendly fire and suicide leads to SO many hysterical deaths. The best moment, and I just mentioned it above, was after we unlocked the APC . When that thing drops it takes up the space that 3-4 normal pods would, and the very first time it dropped it killed all of us at once.

It's such a great multiplayer coop game, Arrowhead is my new favorite game dev.

40  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / SSD is NOT the way to go for gaming on: March 15, 2015, 05:37:01 PM
Around 4-5 months ago I swapped out my 1TB and 500GB HDDs for two 256GB SSDs. One drive is dedicated to the OS and non-gaming software, and the other for games. Media is mostly kept on cloud servers now. The benefits of an SSD are negligible from my anecdotal perspective, I've not sat there with a timer to test load times but based on how I "feel" waiting during load times in games played before and after switching from HDD to SDD, it's the same. It still takes forever to load the CoD: Advanced Warfare campaign, for example. Also, games where there is texture pop-in, like RAGE and Mass Effect, are not improved either.

What I do experience is a constant anxiety over filling up my hard drive space. Yes, I'm using a 256GB SSD and if I had a 512GB or 1TB I wouldn't feel the same. But, given the cost of an SSD, when people are considering buying one they seem to be considering the 128 or 256. In my opinion, it's not worth going SSD for your games unless you're willing to spend $400 on a 1TB drive. Otherwise, every time a game's space requirements are revealed you start having Darwinian thoughts about your game library.

I'm going to put my trusty 1TB HDD back in for my games library, not sure what I'll end up doing with the second SSD.
