1  Non-Gaming / Trading Forum / LF: Xbox One Kinect on: October 21, 2014, 06:50:30 PM
I pre-ordered the Sunset Overdrive Xbox One bundle which I'll be receiving next week. Ron's review of Fantasia made me feel like I would be a bad Disney fan if I don't play it and it requires a Kinect. Is anyone willing to sell theirs for cheap?

Our review is up. Ron struck my Disney fan chord in his review and now I'm debating on buying this game and a Kinect. If anyone wants to sell me theirs on the cheap... =)

Early impressions of the Korra game, before release, from various gaming podcasts was that the game was looking good, and up to platinum's gameplay standards.

But, I'll wait for reviews since I've never played a Platinum game.

For me:
Dreamfall Chapters
Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth

Dreamfall so I can see what they've been doing all this time since I backed it. Then will just wait until the final episode is released before playing it again.

I'm really, really, really hoping that they got the netcode issues worked out for Beyond Earth. Even when my friends and I got together for a LAN party, we had nothing but trouble getting Civ 5 working.

Not to sidetrack the thread but which gaming podcasts do you listen to?

Debating whether to bite on Dreamfall Chapters now, or wait until it's finished.  I really want to play, but I'm afraid I'll forget major plot points if there is a significant gap between installments.  I really want to wait, but my love of that series may just win out.

I was going to do the same thing but it's probably healthier for the game (in a financial sense) if we pay up front as it'll help fund the rest of the episodes. So, I'll be buying it this week.

I'm still playing! It's a bit longer than I expected for a $15 game, incredible value.

I just defeated Crepusculum, and in case you forgot who that was:

Spoiler for Hiden:
Aurora's evil sister

What a difficult battle on Hard difficulty! Initially I was getting frustrated because I could barely get any attacks in, so I spent about half an hour killing enemies for XP in order to level up a bit more and experimented with different strategies. I learned a lot from this battle, in particular the importance of effectively switching party members in and out. Basically, you want to sub your star players out when the enemy is up to attack and put "meat shields" in instead to absorb the hit. Then, when your party members are in the clear and it's their turn to attack, you put your star players (these players can be different based on the vulnerabilities of the particular enemy) back in to do the damage.

This is a great combat system, one of my favorites in an RPG. I still feel like I have a ways to go to mastering interrupts.
10  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / September Sales Info - PS4 leads hardware, Destiny software on: October 17, 2014, 08:36:07 PM
From VentureBeat:

To sum it up:

PS4 (550k estimated) > Xbox > ???

1. Destiny (Xbox One, PS4, 360, PS3)

2. Madden NFL 15 (360, PS4, PS3, Xbox One)

3. FIFA 15 (PS4, 360, PS3, Xbox One, Wii, Vita, 3DS)

4. Super Smash Bros. for 3DS (3DS)

5. Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor (PS4, Xbox One, PC)

6. NHL 15 (PS4, Xbox One, 360, PS3)

7. Minecraft (360, PS3)

8. The Sims 4 (PC)

9. Disney Infinity 2.0 (360, PS3, Wii U, PS4, Xbox One)

10. Diablo III: Reaper of Souls (PS4, 360, PS3, Xbox One, PC)

11. Hyrule Warriors (Wii U)

Interestingly enough, the Xbox One version of Destiny supposedly sold more than the PS4 version. But then again, Microsoft was giving a free game away that month with a console purchase, and the bundled PS4 version wasn't counted.

I bought a 970 GTX yesterday (4GM VRAM!) and now everything runs well... a little too well  ninja

Good 1440p monitors are somewhat affordable and I'm thinking about embarking on gaming at the increased resolution. I've done some searching and haven't found any definitive guides which makes me ambivalent because I don't know if I should be concerned, because not enough people are gaming at that resolution due to incompatibility issues, or reassuring because the upgrade is seamless and there's not much to say about it.

Do most if not all modern games support the resolution? If you play a game at 1080p does it look blurry or simply play windowed? Is the jump in image quality awesome?

I played through the first chapter this morning. What I like about it so far is the quality of the level design, as they are interesting and there's a lot of detail in the environments, and the cinematic feel. I'm not sure about gameplay and mechanics though, I died almost a dozen times in the first hour. It sort of reminds me of Outlast where rather than engaging in combat you're sneaking around and hiding in lockers, under beds, and so on. Outlast does it better, though.

Also, how long does the game stay in widescreen mode?

I admit I've hardly played any games on the Xbox, I'm going purely off my experience playing AC4: Black Flag pre- and post-1080p patch. I'm getting the White Xbox later this month, perhaps I'll buy both versions of a game where this is a prevalent issue so I can understand it better.

Who cares about the resolution? You can't even tell the difference between 900 and 1080. When the PS4 version of Black Flag got patched with the higher resolution I could not discern the increase, and I'm a certified graphics whore. It's the framerate that bums me out as I was hoping for 60fps.

A comment from someone on the Ubi team has made me worried about these consoles, he basically said that AI is processed by the CPU and that the PS4/Xbox are not powerful enough to handle the game above 30FPS (steadily) because of it. Granted, AC games tend to have more AI characters on screen at once than most games, but it's still disheartening. I'm hoping the limitation is overcome as time goes on or at least only applies to open-world games of this magnitude.

I absolutely could tell the difference pre/post patch.

The actual resolutions aren't the real story though, it's a developer saying they are intentionally not taking full advantage of hardware to keep both versions at parity.  That's nonsense.  Can you imagine if the PC version was limited to 900P/30FPS to exactly match the console versions?  Do you think THAT would go over well, with a "you can't tell the difference" ?

The difference you noticed has less to do with the resolution increasing and more to do with other graphical effects being tweaked, that's my understanding of it, at least. In most games where they've compared Xbox One's lower resolution to PS4's higher resolution, the difference was nearly impossible to discern.

From Ubisoft on the AC4 patch (link):

"The most important part of this title update is not necessarily 1080p native resolution," said associate producer Sylvain Trottier in a blog post announcing the patch. "It's the fact that even when we were done with the project, even when we were finished with the certification and everything else, even when most of the engineers had started to work on other projects--like we always do at Ubisoft--some of my engineers continued to work on Black Flag and they even developed a brand-new anti-aliasing technique."

I've been on the defensive side of this debate so far which is strange because graphics are a critical aspect of a game for me. But you simply can't tell the difference between 900p and 1080p and it's ridiculous how much people are complaining about it. The resolution drama is so arbitrary.

The PS4 is my primary.

I have a PC that can run anything, but if the PS4 version is a solid 60FPS, I will always choose that version because I prefer playing in the living room on a couch and TV. However, I still put a good chunk of time into PC gaming because of WoW and indie stuff. The Wii U also gets a fair amount of use because my wife actually enjoys Mario Kart 8. My portables usually get the shaft - 3DS and iPad rarely get used for gaming purposes.

29  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Console sales chart by generation on: September 30, 2014, 11:43:49 PM
I found this really cool chart in an article at the Economist. It's from March of last year, but it covers every generation from the first console generation (starting with the Odyssey in 1972) to last generation. I've never seen this data in a collected format, it's always been something I would read randomly from disparate sources.

A few personal takeaways for me that somehow I never learned or realized before -

- Nintendo had a console before the NES
- There was a lot more competition in the earlier days
- Sega took a hell of a bite out of Nintendo in the Genesis/SNES generation (I always knew the battle was fierce, but thought the SNES greatly outsold the Genesis in the long run)
- How severely Sony dominated during the PSX and PS2 generations.
- How the PS2 sold close to 160m units, I thought the Wii was the best-selling console of all time
- The Saturn and Dreamcast were abject failures (thought they did better numbers than that)
- It's strange that there was almost no total growth between the 3rd and 4th generation, where as in most other generations there's significant generation-over-generation growth
- Skipping generations 3 to 4 due to lack of growth, starting from generations 2 to 3, the growth trend goes: 120%, 65%, 43%, 20% (360/PS3/Wii)

Interesting stuff, at least to me!

The FPS issue doesn't appear to matter for this game anyway. It seems a change was made to the PS4 version just before release that caps it to a perfectly stable 30 FPS, while someone who played the pre-release version confirmed that it used to run at 60 FPS unlocked, just like was reported and confirmed by others earlier. As for resolution, the PS4 runs at 1080p while someone who pixel-counted said that the Xbox One version runs at 900p. Both versions seem to have stable framerates.

Thanks for this info, I've been looking around the internet for the PS4 framerate and not coming up with anything.

Just stopped by the Apple Store to check these things out in person.  The 6+ actually fit in my front pocket better than I expected, but I was wearing big-pocketed cargo shorts today.  I don't think it would be that comfortable in most of my jeans pockets, and I think it would be downright impossible to stow in some of my dress pants.

The 6- was comfortable in-pocket and in-hand, except for one handed use.  Browsing through some web pages and some system menus, it was immediately apparent that my thumb could no longer reach everywhere on the screen like it can on my 4s.

So I'm left a bit torn between getting the 5s or the 6- this fall.  I guess I'll likely get the 6- and just get used to the different handling.

I have the 5s and for work they're giving me the 6 next week. I'll literally be going back and forth between the two so I'll be able to make some good compare and contrasts.
36  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Let's talk Iphone on: September 26, 2014, 09:17:31 PM
It surprised me that Apple has made its new default screen size 4.7 inches with the iPhone 6... and scarier that so many people are buying the Plus. I had an HTC One X (4.7 inch screen) for two years and moved to the iPhone 5s because I wanted a smaller phone. My wife has a Note 3 (same size screen as the 6 Plus) which, because it certainly isn't going to fit in her skinny jeans pockets and she rarely carries a purse, I end up having to carry. If she had the 5s (or any smaller sized phone) she could fit it in her back pocket at least, which is what I do and is kinda annoying.

I don't think people realize how much one-handed utility you lose with the larger screens, either. It's super clumsy to hold so your normal operation of the device becomes two-handed which to me is counter-intuitive. The only time I use two hands with my 5s is when I'm typing, and even then I can still get away with one hand a lot because of suggestive/predictive typing. I was always fumbling with my One X.

Looking at pics on the larger screen sure is nice, though.

I just started playing this and am up to chapter 5. I love the art style, combat mechanics, the rhyming dialogue, and most of all the music. I'm playing on Hard per most people's recommendation and am enjoying the challenge level. The boss fights can be tough but not to a point of frustration, if I do poorly I pay for it in overuse of precious healing and mana potions.

Looking forward to seeing the "progression to adulthood" narrative play out.

The question in my mind is what Microsoft's long-term goal is with the IP. Is it to pimp the IP across various channels (gaming, merchandise, apparel, TV, etc.) or is it to establish a Nintendo caliber brand name for Windows/Xbox (as an entertainment/educational platform)? They say they will support current versions of the game on all platforms, but will the next iteration be exclusive to Microsoft platforms?

It's interesting to think about.

Yeah, that's an example of what I was talking about. I can't remember a developer going so far out of their way to tell people what they should think about a game as Bungie has with Destiny. Their spin machine is going full blast.

I don't think it's spinning as much as it is hand-holding, to be honest. Everyone's expectations seem to be in line with a shooter, while in reality it should be more in line with an MMO. In most MMOs the meaty content almost always comes later rather than sooner.
