1  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Where is OO? on: December 30, 2004, 06:49:22 PM
I read Drazzils autobiography on both sites since he cross posted it and it really did take two different directions.  At OO it seemed more supportive and helpful than it did here IMO.

3  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Flat Screen TV pros/cons on: December 26, 2004, 12:33:22 AM
No one has mentioned burn in either.  DLP and LCD do not suffer from burn in if your playing games on them.  Plasma and RP CRT's do suffer from burn in.  I've had a RP LCD for a year now and have never seen or heard of anyone else complain about motion blur, there is however a screen door effect to it.  I also have no dead pixels at all on a 50" set and if you make sure to get a good warrenty a single dead pixel will get your set fixed if it bothers you.

LCD and DLP don't tend to display non-HDTV signals as well as the CRT sets do.  But my picture and the picture I've seen on the DLP's look a good deal better when it is a HDTV signal.

I wouldn't worry about the DLP technology being a problem and would make my choice between it or the RP LCD's.  The black levels are much better IMO as well.

I know, winter tires are superior to all-seasons when it comes to winter weather. The problem is that I won't be able to replace them with summer tires until somewhere towards the middle of summer. I'm just flat not going to drive around on snow tires for that long. Period.

I needed tires bad for my truck 2 years ago.  There wasn't a hell of a lot of tread left on them but I knew I was going to be off of work from Feb. - May.  I was telling myself "If I can just get to Feb without any snow I'll be fine" it only snowed once and not very much so I got away without buying the tires until the first week of June.  Like you said, buying tires sucks.  I only copied that info down because I had just learned it and thought it was some pretty cool info.  I bought my tires for my truck based on aestetics and what I could stand sound wise.  They work well enough through all the conditions they have been in so far.

Rich, let me guess......

you got all that info from page 20 of the Jan 2005 Popular Science mag.

You should know if you don't already (I didn't until last week)

Yes, I did. smile  I always was under the assumption that you never put snow tires on a FWD car so I never considered that "snow" tires did exist now in a different form from what I remembered being on cars in the 70's and early 80's.

I haven't been getting that magazine long but I love all the little things I've learned from it.

What's the number you called them at, PaulBot? I keep getting a busy signal when I try to call them. What gives?

The number I've always used is 800-390-1119

That is their number. I get a busy signal sometimes too. I just hit redial 2 or 3 times and I get through.

Credit for the TV has been posted on my credit card!!! Now to get the shipping charges credited.... we're almost there!

I'm confused, what shipping charges?  I thought Fed-Ex never charged you to ship it back or are you referring to the charges to ship it to you in the first place?
7  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Rumor Mill - Diablo 3 on: December 19, 2004, 12:00:32 PM
I loved D1 and would have loved D2 if it weren't for stupid ass save system it used.  Just because I ran out of time before I found the next portal back to town and had to save meant that when I fired it back up I would have to hack my way through all the damn monsters again.  Which would be fine if I was in it for the loot but I was actually playing for the story and the action was there to supplement it.  I liked the mindless hack 'n' slash aproach to the combat but not as the main feature of the game.  Just that one simple decision to respawn all the monsters ruined it for me.  I never even tried the MP because I wanted to finish the SP first and only got to the start of act 3 when I gave up.

11  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Car Tires are way too damn expensive. on: December 19, 2004, 11:23:29 AM
When I got mine through Discount tire the shipping was very cheap but it was 1 1/2 years ago.  I also found a guy that mounted 3 of my tires for a total of $8 after I left the other place when they charged me $5 more than they told me the day before because I didn't buy the tires from him.  I only had 1 done at first because I wasn't sure if it would fit on the truck at first without a little modification and I needed a test tire before I did the rest of them.

You should know if you don't already (I didn't until last week) that All season tires are not as good as winter tires in the snow and ice.  The difference is in the compound and the small grooves.  The rubber on all season tires contracts and gets smooth when it gets cold, on winter tires it stays pliable and they use sipes throughout the tread to improve grip.

Some of the better winter tires are.

Nokian RSi's
Michelin X-Ice
Bridgestone Blizzak tires

The Michelin's should be a lot cheaper than the others.  The Nokian are probably the best and the Bridgestone are rated for higher speeds, up to 149mph.

I never would have thought to put winter tires on a FWD car before I learned this.  I figured the all season tires were just fine but like the article I read they are a Jack of all trades and master of none.
12  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Cable HDTV vs DirectTV/Tivo on: December 19, 2004, 11:12:09 AM
You can always just get a STB and antenna for your local HDTV channels and keep the DierecTivo unit until the prices come down.  Though as of now you would still need an antenna to get your locals in HDTV with Directv but they are due to launch another sattelite early in 2005 and it should up the number of HDTV channels they offer.  My dad has a HDTV with analog cable and his picture sucks, my digital picture looks good on my HDTV and better on my CRT and the OTA HDTV signals look great on the HDTV.

I don't really have the options other people do though on the cable side of things.  I can get cable but it is half analog and half digital and no HDTV or PVR's or other Tivo like devices and frankly I've been very happy with D*TV since '99.

I read about Voom a month ago and it sounded interesting especially if I could run it and my D*TV and just switch between them depending on what I wanted to see.

Discount tire or Tirerack online are both great places to get tires from.  I saved over $100 on 33" truck tires after having them delivered to my door and then finding someone to mount them for me this was compared to the cheapest place I could find including the price club places mentioned.  I didn't wait long for them either I think they showed up 3 days after I ordered them.
14  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / I miss Hockey!!! on: December 13, 2004, 09:00:06 AM
I have to agree with Koz and Devil here this proposal is nothing more than a bandaid, a very large bandaid but still a bandaid.  Guidelines help owners when negotiating contracts more than they help the players and if an owner really wants a player when another owner is offering him what the guideline says he is worth the owner with more money will get him no matter what the guidelines say.  This kind of reminds me of the franchise tag in football, you get nailed with it and you are guranteed a contract comparable to the top paid players at your position but it doesn't stop other teams from offering more than that if they really want you.  Without a hardcap there are too many loopholes for the top owners to jump through to get who they want and the players know this.  But it still is going to hurt the teams like the Canucks who can't layout that kind of cash if they had to.

Even though Football has a cap teams have found ways to sign players for more money than they can afford under the cap it just comes back to bite them at a later date like the Cowboys of the late 90's.

Just like my own Union these guys running the league say they are all about protecting their players and the game but when it comes down to signing the thing all they care about is the money.  Frankly I'm thinking this 24% rollback wasn't looked on to kindly by a lot of the players.  Sure the guy makeing 8 million is now making a bit over 6, but the guy who was making 1 is now only getting 750K.

I'd love to see a flat base salary by position loaded with tiered incentive bonuses such that no one position would be looked at by the kids in junior as the one where you make all the money.  I'm just tired of seeing players rewarded for what they did 2 years ago and then not working hard on the ice for the money they are being paid now.

BTW Jeff Jones, that TV is now on sale for $999 instead of $1099..according to CC you have 30 days to get 110% back!

Not really my place to say but Jeff didn't get it at CC he just did some of his research on it there.

I don't know too much about projectors either but I have read that light is one of the biggest issues.  You supposedly need a very dark room to get the best picture and at the main store where I've seen them on display they build little mini theater rooms that were not affected by the rest of the store lights to showcase them in.

I have a Samsung 52" rear projection TV that does 720p and 1080i.

I stand corrected then, Samsung has at least one model that does 720p.
18  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Strange problem with cable on my new TV on: December 10, 2004, 10:52:08 AM
Didn't you also have problems with your Xbox through a certain set of inputs on the TV?  From what I remember of that thread and this problem it sounds as if that set of inputs is set to receive a signal in 1080i or 480p and it just isn't recognizing a 480i signal by itself.  Is there a way to choose the display in a menu on the TV itself.  Does it have more than one set of component inputs or is it just the one and Svideo and composite on the others?  It really sounds like anytime you try to feed a 480i signal into those inputs your getting messed up video, I'd look around and see if there is a FAQ or forum on that TV somewhere, either at the manufacturers site or over at AVS.  Or just try to call them to find out what is going on, it really doesn't sound like it is your cable companies fault or their equipments fault.

Well, crap, how dumb of me not to bring that up around here.  Do you think a chain like Best Buy would do a price match like that?  Or should I try to swing by a Hi-Fi store?  As is there's only the manufacturer's warranty on it for one year.  If I could match it tonight I'd call and cancel the order.  Although I'd still lose a hefty chunk of change from shipping it would be nice to have a better warranty.

Getting price matches from internet sites not in the same area has a better chance of working at places where they work on commision.  I don't think BB will match anything other than a local stores price.  In my case the warranty from BB wasn't that good with CC only being slightly better.  Most people I talked to said Sears had the best warranty but the place I got mine from, Nebraska Furniture Mart, had a damn good one as well.  I do a lot of shopping on the internet, most of it actually but with something that expensive and large and that type of tech. I wanted a local place to deal with if something went wrong.  The extra money was worth the secure feeling I got when buying it.

Ok I might have imagined this but I'm thinking I read yet another blurb about an upcoming episode where they have to dig up the cop's body and it isn't there or something.  I saw a bunch of stuff last week following links from TV Tome about the show and that might have been one of them.

If that does come to pass than all of my "normal" theories fly right out the window.  I will say I'll be disappointed in the show if it turns into a big Sci-fi fest of a show but right now it is the show I most look forward to each week.
21  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / LOST - 12/8/04 on: December 09, 2004, 09:04:47 PM
I'm not a big Sci-Fi fan so maybe that's why I just can't buy into all of the mystical theories surrounding the Island and the survivors.  If Abrahms is adding some island magic to the show I don't think every scene and event has a connection to it.  Some of the things that happen it would seem have to be taken at face value as normal or coincidence.

Here is a wild theory of my own I just came up with.  There is no magic at all.

Jack's vision of his father really was just because of his lack of sleep and need for water and he finally stumbled onto the wreckage and the stream while wandering in the jungle.

Locke's reason for being in a wheel chair wasn't physical at all but in his head.  Remember he wasn't the most rational guy in the real world, he did think a phone sex woman was in love with him and bought her a ticket to go with him to the Outback.  The crash and the fact that he survived broke through his mental barrier and he was able to walk again.

It was Jack's procedure that brought Charlie back from the dead and had nothing to do with the island.

The kid just had a run of good luck playing backgammon.

Sayid was delirious from blood loss and the after affects of the shot the woman gave him and heard what he heard because it was suggested to him in his conscious state of mind.

Locke just happened to see the guitar above his head before asking Charlie to give something to the island to get his guitar back.  I actually think this really did have nothing at all to do with the island and was just a ploy by Locke to get Charlie to give him the drugs.  There have been many other times that people have supposedly received something from the island without giving anything in return.

All of my theories are just as believable as an island magic is but in the end I think it is a combination of the two.  Some things are real and coincidence and something’s are magic.

Last year when I got my 50" LCD I was able to get the online pricing I had found rather easily from a local store it was about $700 off the regular price and $350 off their sale price of that week.  I would have had it but I wanted their 2 years no interest financing as well and they wouldn't give me the deal and the financing so we almost split the difference.  I still got the TV for about $100 less than their sale price and the 2 years of free financing.  If I had only had the cash or a credit card with no financing at the time I could have saved a couple of hundred on it.  I really didn't want to go with an online retailer because of the great store warranty that this store offers.  No restrictions whatsoever on dead pixels.  If I have a single bad pixel they will fix or replace the TV the manufacturer warranty is not that good.  The only thing it doesn't cover is light bulb replacement.

It still took 11 more months until I saw anyone selling my TV for less than what I paid for it, so I'm happy with the deal I got.

I was just wondering this, where the hell are all of the insects and snakes and rats and stuff like that.  All we have seen is the food that Locke has brought back, the bear, and a few fish.  If we have learned anything from Survivor it is that camping out on beaches and caves gets you eaten alive from insects and everything else.

I still believe it is more tied to what they are thinking/feeling.

The young boy is the perfect example.

Thinking about certain dice rolls coming up - Happens

Thinking about finding his dog - Happens

Thinking about the polar bear in the comic book - Happens

I forgot all about the comic until you mentioned it, but the dog is a different story.  The kid never found the dog no matter how much wishing he did.  Jack saw the dog and told Locke it was running around out there somewhere.  Locke made a dog whistle and called the dog to him.  If it were as simple as wishing there would have been no need for anyone but the kid to call (wish) for the dog and no need for an actual whistle.

I run AnyDVD in the background and use TheaterTek with FFDshow to view and upconvert the DVD picture to 1080i. I should note that I'm outputing the picture to my TV via a DVI/Component output adapter on my video card.   Zoomplayer is free but lacks a codec and is a pain in my opinion to get to run with FFDshow.  Also you need a lot of CPU to run these together.

With all of this running I now get to see HDTV DVD's.

I was thinking about a 6600GT a month ago before the AGP's came out.  Thing is though I was reading that 2 6600's in SLI were about the same speed as the (at the time) 2x more expensive 6800.  I thought I could get one 6600 now and when the price fell rather than buy an even more expensive card I could just add a second 6600 for less money.  Problem is you can't do that with the AGP versions.  Just something to think about if you are considering the AGP model now.

Yeah I know the Island has some "magic" to it, well maybe, something has to explain Jack's visions and Locke's ability to walk but the guitar was just laying on a hillside Locke could have easily seen it there befoe he asked Charlie how bad he wanted it back.  I guess I just don't think there was that much significance to the Rain comment in the greater scheme of things.  To me it was more of a you should trust me that I know what I'm doing and we should keep going on kind of thing instead of a believe in the island kind of thing.

I used to always say go to the AVSForums as well and did just that myself last year when I was looking for a new TV but their forums are a complete mess and their search function is hit or miss.  The reason I mention the search function is that they tend to be some of the rudest forum members I've run across when a question is asked of them.  I don't know how many people I've seen flamed or given the this is how people will flame you but I won't backhanded help.

So I'm going to point out two things to you since you mention the Xbox, both Rear Projection LCD and DLP sets do not suffer from burn in like Plasma or regular RP sets do.  Also RPLCD & DLP will do both 720p and 1080i; I've never seen a regular RP set that would do 720p.

In store testing I personally went in thinking I was going to get a DLP but was stunned by a Hitachi LCD set that was next to a Samsung DLP and a Sony LCD.  I went with the Hitachi 50" RPLCD, had it a year now and I'm extremely happy with it especially since I now have a HTPC hooked up to it.

So you got the TV Jeff?

I watched the movie on Sunday night and loved it, thought it was better than the first one.

The only thing I thought that maybe should have been different was the editing of scenes at the end.  Having Harry find the room and then see him at the wedding didn't seem right.  I was half expecting the Green Goblin to show up right before Parker and MJ kissed and ruin the moment.  I think they shouldn't have shown Harry at the wedding or placed the scene at the end even if it would have been more of a cliche.

According to an article I read last week with Dominic M. I didn't get the impression that Locke was asking the Island for rain, I think he just could tell, hell maybe he could even see it coming toward them.
33  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / LOST - 10/27/04 on: October 28, 2004, 06:31:30 PM
It sucks writing about the same thing on 3 different forums now but anyway.

My take on the split originally posted at Qt3.

I can understand why Jack & Locke wanted to move inland. Jack just wants to be practical and prepared incase they are there for a long time, why he didn't think about a signal fire crew I don't know. Locke probably has no desire to leave the island as this is the best thing to happen to him. The Koreans moving inland doesn't make much sense considering we have seen the Korean catch fish with his bare hands unless it is just because the Black guy Mike and the Iraqi stayed on the beach. The guitar player, forgot his name, really was never informed of the move. He and Locke were left behind to sort the luggage and didn't know there was going to be a move, he could stay or go to the beach and I didn't see the pregnant woman all episode, he seems taken with her and would probably go where she goes. Fat kid just does whatever Jack does because he sees him as the most capable.

My take on the people who stayed on the beach is that they really just don't want to admit that they may be there longer than they wish. Moving inland away from the majority of the wreckage and the signal fire would be admitting to themselves that they could be there for awhile. Kate's statement of not wanting to be Eve was her way of saying she isn't ready to start building what could end up being the beginning of their civilization, so she stayed on the beach.

I would think after the beach crew has to keep making trips into the jungle for the water, and they should be the ones to do it, sooner or later they will realize the impracticality of living on the beach. I would think the signal fire crew idea would come up then. In all I don't think this split will last very long.

Here is my tongue in cheek theory originally posted on OO about the whole Black & White backgammon and found stones plot.

I just had an epiphany, didn't Locke have a conversation with Mike's boy about things being Black & White in the first or second episode. Let's see, miracles happen to people, Big ass thing shaking the trees, Locke brings back food after maybe seeing the tree shaking beast but we neither see him kill the boar or actually see the beast. I think I've hit on it, the producers are Peter Molyneux fans and the Black & White reference was a clue on the nature of the tree shaking beast which will end up being a giant Cow that is ordered around by a free floating hand that can produce miracles.

Finally, I think episodes like last nights are needed to bring about more character developement.  We are getting back story on the main cast slowly and this lets us in on how much their previous life is dictating their actions on the island and how much is the islands and crashes doing.  With series TV revealing the heart of mysteries too soon always seems to mean lower ratings a few weeks later because there isn't the mystery to look forward to any longer.

The Chiefs aren't necessarily built around a badass RB they are built around a badass OL, especially a run blocking line.  Green did manage to throw for 4,000 yds last season as well even though I do agree with you about the WR's.

I thought the problem with the 1.2 patch was a graphics issue.  The 1.2 patch was supposed to retro fit Far Cry to take advantage of the Shader Model 3 in newer video cards.  The problem I had read was that they needed Service Pack 2 to be released which would include DirectX 9.0c.  Now that SP2 is out the improvements to the graphics can now be used by those with cards that support SM3 was my understanding.  As far as game fixes I had no idea what each patch was supposed to do.

The 8 rushing TD's were great and they weren't even trying on the last one, they just ran basic running plays all the way down the field.  The best thing about the game was watching Vick get chased down behind the line of scrimmage by an overweight (not football overweight) white defensive end.  The secondary did a pretty damn good job compared to the last few years here in KC, Vick rarely had the time or targets to throw to and when he did there were several half ass attempts at catches and some dropped balls.

This was the first time I've seen Vick play so I don't know if this was just an anomaly or not but his pocket presence did nothing to impress me.  Green has shown that Montana like ability to just glide around in the pocket to make people miss and also shake off defenders and still complete a play.  There were times in the past I wished KC had a scrambling QB but I’d much rather have a Trent Green than a Michael Vick despite the Chiefs record this year.  I’d still take just about any other teams D though.
