808  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: AoC official forum Dev Postings of note on: January 29, 2009, 06:08:04 PM
I can't agree here :O)

Each type of game that is very successful follows similar formulas in what they need to work. This doesn't guarantee success but it means you are building from a solid foundation. This doesn't mean you can't be innovative but it sure means you need to capture the main points from the off.

Things like a solid game engine, in a sports Sim it's real names and players that play and look like the real thing. In an MMO's it's setting and the rewards you offer, be it loot, zones, skills. The format or way you offer them can differ in so many ways but if the (insert answer here) you control doesn't have that magic ingredient it just doesn't work.

For MMO'S there are some that want a transition into a new style of game and not the rinse and repeat of the present crop of MMO. AoC could have been that, however  IMO (this is my feelings :O)) you still need to take some of the best and most intrinsic parts of MMO gameplay and do them well in your game unless you really have another great alternative. The reality of just ignoring it or saying in our view it isn't about this won't wash. The player base need to follow your view of what it is they are playing and seemingly wearing the same gear, looking the same and not having that special look or item is not the way a large number of the player base see things. Personally i don't find that a surprise I'm just surprised AoC made that mistake.

Many people want lots of things from lots of games but there is no doubt there are a few common denominators in there the majority want and you need to ensure you are giving them this on top of the new experience.

Of course that doesn't mean people shouldn't think out of the box or tr things radically different, however i don't feel saying we didn't envision a different look or  better weapon stats as part of our game so we didn't bother as actually innovative or a step in the right direction.

Of course you may disagree  icon_lol

I started on Silver and haven't found it too hard. Bronze is srewed on loot drops as wel, not enough drops. Go for silver.

I really struggle to understand why this sort of stuff wasn't in at the start. Diversity is what you need and a year down the line it is probably too late if you actually what to be anything except a minor player.
They are only a minor player.  It's nice to see, at least, they are still willing to allocate resources to keeping the small pop they have happy and improving the game however slowly that might be happening.

[edited for pre-coffee misplaced bitchiness]

I can't agree, for many the drive of levelling and finding new gear and looks is all part of the experience and remove one of them and the game just doesn't work for them. From the off some of gear and equipment is just pathetic in it's description and added bonuses, also the looks were so similar it was really a case of wth. Hence so many people calling for better stuff and looks.

With anything new you really can't afford to get the basics wrong and AoC did and there really is no excuse for it.
811  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Age of Conan Q&A thread on: January 25, 2009, 07:29:47 PM
The first area is pretty good but it just isn't representative of the game as a whole. Maybe they should have made a single player game in the same vein instead.

It's a bit like getting the new girlfriend home and stripping her off and finding out she is a ladyboy with a push up bra. Sure the excitement built on the ride home but hell, no way am i gonna go there again when i see what it is even if he is now a she next time we meet slywink

When you click the arrow to open up the skills. The grey ones can only be selected once you have 5 points in the ones on the left of the grey ones. This can be 5 points in 1 or 1 in each of the 5's.

To level up the skills you can there is a small + sign on the ones that are in your tree to the left(not the box when you click the arrow)

You get to choose 10 skills overall but they don't come every level.

So you have skills that level up every level as well as a choice of skills to which you can choose a max of 10 over the course of the first 30 odd levels.

Sorry the above is not that clear.

814  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Football Manager Live on: January 25, 2009, 10:40:45 AM
I picked this up yesterday.

First it isn't as in depth as Football Manager 2009 but you still need a good understanding of Soccer to play it.

The game costs 18 from play.com and that includes a 4 month subscription.

First you have to name your Team same as you would your toon in an MMO.

You then join a game world (server) this supports up to 1000 players. Each gameworld runs on a 4 week cycle. 1 week of preseason and then 3 weeks of playing competition games. This works really well as it gives you the first week to get set up, play some friendlies and learn the game.

At the start you get 500,000 to buy a squad and a wage budget of 100,000. All the players in the game are based on real life players so it's like setting up your own soccer team. You can use Auto Select and it will pick 18 players automatically or you can get it to pick 18 players based on your settings. Finally you can manually do it by searching the database and picking them all yourself. I did a bit of both. Picked 4 key players and then auto filled the rest.

There are also skills in the game you learn and this is done exactly like EvE. They are broken down into sections like Coaching, Tactics, Physio, Scouting, Management and Infrastructure. They all have additional skills within them. They take from 40mins to 30 days to learn and go from level 1 to 5. You get a choice at the start on what you want to focus on and gets skills based on that.

After choosing your squad and get in game there are a few things to do. Fist you pick an FA (Football Association) to join. These organise your league and cup games and also regulate how often you want to play. There are different types of FA's. I am in an evening one which is for people who are mostly on between 18.00 - 24.00. You have afternoon ones, morning ones and so. You also have casual ones for people that don't play as much and ones for heavy players.

Then it's picking your team and formation. This is also where it is different from FM2009.  For example you can pick any formation but if you want to add  forward runs or defense cover you need to learn it as a skill so you can train your team in it. At first it seems a bit odd being limited in what you can set up but it does seem to work well.

Next it's play a game or two. You can set your profile to you want to play a game and then use an auto finder to find other teams ready to play or you can ask anyone for a game. You join chat rooms when logging in, there are 4 or 5 of them including a transfer market and help rooms for anything you aren't sure of as well as asking for friendlies.

Now the league format works a bit different, the fixture are generated and you have a date by which time you need to have played this game against the other person. So it's not as if you have to be on line at a specific time. Depending on your FA your also have an AI option where games cane be resolved by the AI using what you have picked, there is a limit to this and if you use it too much you will end up being removed from the league. I don't really know how well this works as my league only starts on Thursday and i am in the friendly phase still.

Finances are daily in that you get income every 24 hours and pay players daily. You have a daily limit on max wages which is 250k a day, for every spent over this you get a 100% tax on it.

So far i am really enjoying it, behaviour seems good, but it will interesting to see how people cope with losing games and being in a live chat situation as well.

I also wonder if the game will end up with those that play full time can easily pull away from those that don't and whether having multiple FA'S will solve this.

I do recommend it if you like FM2008/09

Ok thanks for that advice. It's not that i don't want to group just i don't get more than an hour so uninterrupted so find it unfair on those i group with. So i have a tendency to play alone and only use groups when i have to.

2nd i will be mostly solo so 1 class from each to play.

Any help appreciated.
823  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: *SHOCKER* Gamestop pisses me off again on: January 05, 2009, 10:43:47 PM
I think on new releases that are second hand you do only save 5.

New 39.99, Trade in 18.00, Second hand selling price 34.99 (29.99 if it's not selling well).

IMO that's not only ripping the gaming business off but the consumer as well. I really don't think the average person equates a second hand sale to no profit for the game maker or publisher and the effect this is having, add to that in a recession any saving is going to look even more attractive, it is certainly not a good thing.

In the UK we don't get any schemes as mentioned above then again we don't get as much shit.

Mostly i wait for new to become cheap.
824  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: *SHOCKER* Gamestop pisses me off again on: January 05, 2009, 10:36:02 PM
Luckily for us in the UK we don't have anything like this at all. We have 2 main Game shops The Game and Gamestation but there is never any pressure to buy used. Also they do specials each week that make new cheaper than second hand so it seems to encourage you to buy new. Example i picked up Fable II for 19.99 new when it was 29.99 second hand.

I was a retail manager for 20 years and there is no way i or any of my teams would ever have done selling in that way. Sure we were under pressure to sell certain high margin items to as many people as possible, but the customer is king and a return customer is a must. Another thing is 1 bad customer always tells there friends and families so normally it's not just 1 person you lose it can be 2 or 3 people.

There are always people who will take plenty of shit, some won't take any the reality is 90% are in the middle ground and from Jblanks post he falls into that category and when you piss them off you have undoubtedly got it wrong.

Personally i won't accept poor service from any business i go into and any that give it don't get a repeat visit from me or if it's a shop i generally need to visit on a regular basis i will make an immediate complaint either to a manager or higher if needed.
825  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Anyone else playing Sacred 2? on: January 05, 2009, 10:13:49 PM
Played a bit more, i'm level 12 now and got my first horse. Certainly is a bit quicker.

One thing i don't like are the escort quests. You click on someone to finish a quest and they are like right take me here an dit's miles from where you are and nowhere near where you want to go. Then if you save and exit or crash(had 1 of each) the quests are failed anyways. There needs to be an option to do the escort or say no not atm.

Is the reward from the main quest line better than the side quests or is it the random drops that are best or no difference at all?

826  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Anyone else playing Sacred 2? on: January 04, 2009, 05:47:58 PM
When completed do you then move to Hardcore or do other levels open up.

Also seems like you played it very linear, i think i have done pretty much all the local side quests in the first zone and am level 8, not even really touched the main quest line.

I'm not sure on my SW build. Is blacksmith, Alchemy or Riding even worth taking?

When can you get your mount?
827  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Gaming resolutions? on: January 03, 2009, 02:51:37 PM

Quote from: Canuck on January 02, 2009, 01:11:58 PM

Sure there's always lots of talk about New Years Resolutions but people to talk about their New Year's Gaming resolutions (I wonder why?) much.  So I thought what the heck.

Mine are twofold:

1) Finish more games than I did last year (4)
2)And to accomplish #1, I'm going to try to concentrate on one game at a time.  I know some of you like to keep your plate full but unfortunately I'm just not able to do that.  I get into games for an hour and then I get distracted by another game and then with 3 or 4 games on the go it  all seems like too much work and I never finish any of them.  So I'm gonna try to keep it simple this year.

How bout you guys? Got a particular game that you've never  been able to get around to or don't spend as much time gaming as you would like (or spend too much time gaming?)

This is me to a tee. I just can't get stuck into 1 game without another looking better and doing an hour at each one.

At the moment i am doing The Witcher but Sacred 2 is already intruding. I'm a bit into Dead Space, Fallout 3, PoP and FM2009 and have Mass Effect, X3 TC and Planescape + all mods waiting to go.

Add to that i love mmo's and have Lotro and WOTLK available

I have a xbox360 with Midnight Club LA, Burnout Paradise, Fable II, Last Remnant, Lost Odyssey and Infinite Undiscovery ready as well i think i may be doomed.

Also maybe buying a few less games as well.

It's a rip, you can get the Drums for Rb1 for 79 no Game. The game is 39.99(RB1). RB2 is 44.99 and 130 for the full set.

I have GH guitar and want RB2 with the Drums but you can't do just that.

All in all it's too bloody expensive and even 2nd hand is only 10 off the full set.

Total rip off atm.

Wait till March as the recession bits bound to be some dcent reductions by then.

Another thing i find is when i drop back into LOTRO, AoC or WoW etc i am no longer in a guild and to be honest most of the games work much much better in a guild. Normally i don't really play enough to apply to guilds yet if i had a guild i may play more.

Anyways keep us updated about AoC as i have a level 20ish toon i may be tempted to play with.

So, decided to resub Age of Conan this christmas, since I had some spare time, and was a bit bored with all the niceness in LOTOR and the bugginess of WAR.

And, I cant for the life of me understand why I ever quit - the game is sooo beautiful, and the first 20 levels are sooo damn fun - took 2 characters through Tortage, a Conquerer and a Necromancer, and had a ton of fun!

The game itself runs beautifully now, Funcom having optimized the game engine quite a lot, and there's a lot of newly added content as well, not the least of which is the PVP Notoriorty system, which punishes gankers. Also, I'll have to dig this one up, but come january server mergers will occur, and a new big content patch will arrive as well.

All in all, the game is great, I'm having a ton of fun, and the gritty, dirty world of Conan (With Nekkid Boobbbiiiiess) is so much more fun than the clean LOTRO to me right now

Aye but you say that about all of em  icon_biggrin

Personally i feel the same, each one when going bak to it seems great for a week or 2 and then the rot sets in. I really really want a new MMO to play, LOTRO, AoC, TR, EVE, WoW etc just don't scratch the itch for long enough yet there isn't anything else out there. What i am looking for is something that made me feel like WoW did on release month or EQ2 when i first tried that but there just isn't anything that really manages it atm.

I am actually using it as a chance to play some single player games. Got Dead Space, Fallout 3, Football Manager 09, GTA IV and POP.
