I felt like I was playing a TES game with the occasionally poorly-named NPC running by every once in a while.   I think I'm in on this one - it felt much better this go around, and it was far more stable to boot.  My biggest complaint was the interface for crafting as it's not just unintuitive but counter-intuitive.   They have time to fix that though, and hopefully some of my feedback helps.

On the subscription front, I don't bat an eye at 15 a month when there is this much content.  The Free to Play model seems to attract the absolute WORST players, and I'd rather avoid them altogether.

On the "why isn't the client free" side of things, I wouldn't expect them to give away years of programming time.  If you believe what they've done is worthwhile, you pony up to experience it, otherwise we are back to that f2p model.  Free to Play has become nuisance-ware.  Want a bank slot?  Money.  Want to be able to have more than pocket change?  Money?  And the worst of them - want to rearrange your interface in SWTOR?  Money.  I'd rather pay a subscription so the devs can create more content than have them nag me for nickels and dimes until I quit out of frustration.  Am I alone on this?

You are not alone in this in any way. I'm sick and tired of the F2P model, and thats what I hear from a lot of people. The thing is, we may be the minority in this case - the oldschool gamers with money to spend. LOL is currently one of the game with the biggest income, and judging by anecdotal evidence, its a younger persons game where kids from my daugthers school play it and get their parent to spend money on it as well.

Subscription based games with a high entry fee are harder to justify to parents, so the question probably is - Are there enough oldschool gamers interested in these games to sustain them?

I watched Shatners "The Captains" a documentary about the various actors that have played Starship captains in the various Star Trek movies / shows. It features Shatner of course, Patrick Stewart, Avery Brooks, Kate Mulgrew, Scott Bakula and Chris Pine, as well as numerous others who were in some of the shows or movies.

To be honest, I was groaning at the opening and Shatner saying this was a journey of discovery for both the viewers, and him. I was also groaning when he first interviewed Patrick Stewart, and Stewart got to say 2 lines, where Shatner then talked for several minutes about himself. This is something that goes on in every single Interview, and seeing as Shatner is executive producer, it only reinforces my view of him as something of a egocentric personality.
Shatner talks in that wierd clipped way that Mr Lipton does in that Actors Chair show, and it seemed like acting by Shatner, unfortunately.

Despite that, I actually really liked the documentary, but thats despite the man, not because of him. The other captains are genuinly interesting people. I've always liked Patrick Stewart, but the documentary managed to make me interested in the other actors as well, despite me not having seen any of the newer shows. Even Chris Pine seems like a real human being, and honestly, Shatners outburst is probably spot-on "You are me, 50 years ago!". To me, Shatner was a force of personality back in the day, and Chris Pine has the same self-confidence that comes with being young and successful that some find grating.

Nearing the end of the documentary, it occurred to me that it was actually pretty good watching this, and it told me a lot not only about the other Captains, but a lot about Mr. Shatner as well, and his fear of being forgotten which shines through quite well.

All in all, I can only recommend this if you have any interest in Star Trek or actors.

There is a series as well, where he goes a bit more in depth with the various actors, but all in all, I find the movie a lot better.

Might get me a founders pack for SOE's Everquest Next: Landmark, since that looks tons better than Project Spark, but thats pretty much it.

I managed to get a bit of time in on ESO.  While Im still not blown away, it does seem better than the last beta.  It took me forever to download the client this time and I didnt get a lot of play time in but I still dont think this game is anywhere near worth a subscription fee. If thats the route they are going I expect it to fail and do as pretty much every other recent MMO and go FTP.
Part of the problem with these short betas is that you dont get much of a chance to play a developed character.  Playing a low level toon doesnt give you much of a feel for the game or its capabilities. Now I understand this is a beta and not a sales demo but these days betas are made to help sell the game, so I hope they run a more extended beta soon, where you have some time to play a bit deeper of a character.

Its not even a Beta, its a STRESS beta, meaning the object of the exercise is to crash the servers.

Also, be careful since the NDA is still very much in place.

I didn't come here until after the great OOutage in 2008, where I registered back in 2005 I think. I discovered Gone Gold and was there briefly until it disappeared, and randomly fell over OO one day which stated it was a refuge of GG.

I must say, for all the crap we have here sometimes, its still feels like home :-)

88  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [XB1/Windows 8] Project Spark on: January 10, 2014, 02:38:01 PM
Well, its not that awesome a thing, actually, especially since you have to purchase various theme packs for real money if you want to try out others creations most of the time, or make your own creations without a ton of restrictions. Its based on a fremium model which is frankly not very fun to work with.

I do believe SOE's LAndmark will be much better and is a lot more freeform creation than Project Spark.

Watched a few things of note of recent:

Warrior: Two brothers prepping for a UFC style completion. Did not expect this one to be as good as it was. The build up to and through the event is pretty incredible.

Jack Reacher: The trailers for this film made it seem like a completely different flick than it was. I thought it was going to be this light hearted action flick but it was a bit dark and took itself more seriously than I was expecting. Actually the trailer scene where Jack gets out of his moving car, walks over to a bunch of people waiting for a bus, and then they hide him from the cops was so out of place in the film it made it seem like they filmed it just for the trailer.

Now the film is not an out of the park. There was no chemistry with the leading lady. And the reveal was pretty unbelievable. But it was a lot better than I was expecting. Wouldn't mind seeing another Jack Reacher film if they made one.

The West Wing: Never caught this when it was on regular TV. Did not care so much for the first three episodes but episode four and on were pretty fantastic. Over the Christmas/News Year break I was doing some major binging. And damn that ending to S1 I can't imagine how shocking that was and how bad it was to wait for the next season to start. I may have made it a whole 20 seconds before having to start up the S2 opener.

Season 2 isn't quite as good as the first season so far. And they seem to kinda just start a plot line then forget about it. Like Sam and the call girl. And the Moira Kelly character from S1, who was terrible BTW, was just dropped in to oblivion apparently. She's not on the show at all and there was no mention of why she is gone. Not that I mind for that particular character.

But still pretty good overall. 5 more seasons to go.

Warrior is very good! I was extremely surprised as well but its pretty great actors, and Nick Nolte either won or got nominated for an oscar as far as I can remember for this role. Much recommended!

The first Aliens Vs Predator game was pretty fun as well - Both the campaign but also the multiplayer, which was seriously ahead of its time, with its tilted scales.

Here in Denmark we read and see news about the severe winter in the states. I feel for you guys - it sounds horrible! Stories about exposed flesh causing freezing damages almost instantly and the like are rather crazy.

As a counterpoint, here in Denmark we normally have about 23 fahrenheit to 14 fahrenheit, and we currently have 48 degrees, which is crazy. Its causing flowers to start blooming, and the harvest may have issues as well.

Oh - and the above IS fahrenheit even though its a silly system. 0 degrees should be freezing point ;-)

Anyways - I hope you all are okay and eh..stay frosty in the horrible weather!

Besides being fantasy its one of the least clicheed games I played of its type. Gnomes trying to create clones to cheat death, you being able to alter fate and destroy it , immortal faeries which recreates their legendary stories every day, over and over, and so on, being divided between Summer & Winter Court and so on. Really, if its guilty of anything, its trying to go beyond the tired stereotypes we see in pretty much every other single player MMO out there. It had a huge Jack Vance feel to it, and he certainly wrote stories that were more fairytale than fantasy, and thats what much of this tried to do.

I posted this in another forum as well, but thought I'd like to hear from you guys as well.

So, we are nearing the end of the year, and I'm kinda curious what games you are all looking forward too in 2014, since I really know very little of what comes out.

Personally, there is a few games that I really want

Watchdogs (PC/?)- Can't wait for this! My only issue is if I need a console for it, but hopefully by then PS4 is possible to get.
Elder Scrolls (PC!) - I'm an MMO-Whore and I know it. I usually get my monies worth by just exploring and having fun in games like these, especially if there's decent PVP which I hope this haves. This will be on PC
Wasteland (PC) - I havent bought into the kickstarter but this is something I really antiticpate!
Titanfall (PC) - I hope my PC can run it, but otherwise I'll have to get a PS4 for it! Since being utterly disappointed by Battlefield 3 and 4, this is something I hope will be great
Everquest Landmark (PC)  - Anything creative gets gobbled up instantly by me since the idea of creating Homes in games is something I find extremely interesting and an area that is severely lacking.
Elite: Dangerous (PC) - This came out of nowhere and looks utterly, utterly interesting. I'm unsure whether it will come out in 2014 though.

What are your great expectations?

Interesting that this close to christmas, you find units sitting around in stores. I can tell that in Denmark the PS4 is COMPLETELY sold out, as in people have preordered it like crazy and only half got it on release day.

I am slightly thankful though, even though I enjoy being a firstmover, that others get to handle the headaches of software and hardware issues first. Yes, I try hard to be positive about not having any of these new machines yet! ;-)
