7643  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Star Wars - remake(Would you watch it?) on: September 01, 2008, 09:48:12 AM
So, I was watching the very first star wars movie again last night, and it had begun to look a little dated...so I though, who would make a good Han Solo now, Princess Leia and so on..

And the thing is, if someone took the movie, like so many other movies are being done with today, and did a completely new edition of it, would you watch it?

And who would you want in the different roles?

7644  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [wii, ps2] baroque (atlus/sting) on: September 01, 2008, 06:30:37 AM
Sooo....the game just hit the streets here in Denmark for the Wii - and I caved and bought it, since I remember its a dungeon crawl, and I havent played any good ones of those lately...

well, fiddled around with it for an hour, and then dropped the game, and played some MAss effect instead.

never really grabbed me - graphics looks horribly dated, controls are wonky, gameplaywise, well, only played for an hour, but nothing to really hook me, but I'm not big on the whole japanese trend of rpgs so, that may be it...

anyways, Its a game I'll be returning soon to the store
7645  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [PS] Deus Ex and Thief? on: September 01, 2008, 06:25:18 AM
So, I found Deus Ex last night at my local EBgames, and got it at once, since I've been wanting to replay the game for a while, and the graphics look better on an PS3.

Tried it shortly, and it's perfect! the exact same game more or less as the PC version, with all the atmosphere I remembered and loved :-)

Now, I was thinking, I couldnt find anything about it, but is Thief avaiable as well for the PS?

Nevertheless, while LOTRO may be more or less perfect game-engine wise, they ARE missing in atmosphere - even AoC had the conan atmosphere right, oozing in everywhere, whereas in LOTRO its, well....it just feels like a game, nothing else...

Just bought the game, played a few hours and at am the Citadel right now...LOVING IT!

btw, there's a patch, and some DLC as well, some mission or some sort now, 350 MB patch :-)

Playing as an infiltrator, and cant for the life of me figure out who to take along on missions right now... Wrex and the Turian are both very cool, but I love the chats the two humans have as well....arggh - and I Want to play as all the other classes as well!!!

That's not....new...i've done that before in a game.  I just can't remember which one atm..but it's DEFINITELY been done before.

It's also a common sniper tactic. You can see it in the movie Saving Private Ryan in the Vin Diesel scene.

more or less basic tactics of war indeed - although, normally, you'll want to wound people instead of killing them - more costly to the enemy.

anyways, looks good - the game looks very interesting indeed, and is one of the few I'll be looking for on the PS3

Excellent choice of music in the trailer.  However, I wonder if the actual movie will use a similar soundtrack with a more rock emphasis, or go with the more orchestral track of the Max Payne games.

anyone know what song this is? Marylinn mansion perhaps?

how much impact does gear have in a game like this?

I'm thinking melee healer to be main, since I love the rp behind them, and then a few alts, with money from the main, since this IS a competetive game, I'm assuming you need good gear to be able to survive?

And, for the lazy...

Greetings!
With the drop of the NDA, the last few days has been hectic and exciting. There is an even more intense interest in WAR and this trend will only continue as we approach Open Beta, Head Start and LAUNCH! Here are some questions and answers which have emerged from this.

Will the Flash website be exchanged for an HTML-based website?
Whereas we have many improvements and new features coming up for our website, we will not be exchanging it for a HTML-based website for now.

Upcoming features include:
• Realm WAR pages
• New Account Management pages (will be online by the start of Open Beta)
• Web-Shop (will probably not be online by launch but it's coming)

Phew… With that out of the way, please keep reading!

Will CE Pre-Order customers gain an extended head-start?
Yes. The final dates are almost but not quite set in stone. For certain, though, CE pre-order customers will have a somewhat longer Head Start than SE pre-order customers.

How many servers will there be for the Head Start? Will I be allocated a server, and if so, what happen if my non-Head Start friend want to play on the same server and it's full?
Players will not be allocated a server, but will be free to choose from the same selection of servers as will be available on Live Launch on September 18th. Naturally, we will be monitoring our servers intensely; if there is a need for more servers, we will plug in more of them from our stock. As of now, we cannot share any specific numbers on this.

When will the actual CE box be available in retailers?
September 18th.

Will EU SE pre-order customers get into WAR Open Beta?
No. This was a solution well suited for the American market, but less so Europe. With more diverse demographics, we have opted for a solution where we will be giving away 55 000 Open Beta keys through the EA Store and other community sites. This allow for a more focused approach, better suited the five-language market we operate in.

Will EU CE pre-order customers get into WAR Closed Beta?
No. When the Collector Edition pre-order program was designed last autumn, we decided to include Open Beta access as a bonus and we are sticking with this. Naturally, neither will SE pre-order customers.

Will there be a European Preview Weekend?
No. When the Preview Weekend was announced we were frankly caught by the bed. Our schedule leading up to Open Beta and Launch have included large scale testing all along, and a Preview Weekend event of sorts was never part of this plan. In the end, making such large scale changes with such short notice proved unrealistic.

Europeans will not be left in the dark, however. As we speak, WAR is being shown to approximately 200 000 people at the Games Convention, Leipzig.

When will the Open Beta start?
The EU Open Beta is scheduled to start September 7th. This is the date we have been working with for some time but naturally, anything can happen up until then.

Will we be able to download the Open Beta client in beforehand?
Yes. The client will be hosted from the EA Store from the first week of September.

Will WAR be localized in my language on launch?
Warhammer will be launched in Europe on September 18th in Italian, Spanish, German, French and English with 24/7 in-game support.

During EU Beta, servers have often been down during weekends, and with French labour laws in order, there has been no one there to fix them. How do you plan to meet this challenge?
The Closed Beta servers have indeed been hosted and maintained in France, thereby being subject to the infamous French labour laws. Again, the very reason we relocated to Dublin was so that we could get around this in preparation for WAR. The Live servers will be monitored 24/7 from Dublin.

What about download options for Europe? Will we have a Fileplanet download like in the US?
I realise this is a hot topic, but I'm afraid I don't have any solid information right now. EA are big players and I have great faith in their ability to satisfy the downloading needs of our would-be open beta testers. That said, I'll try to find more information on this and share as soon I can.

What is the deal with the web-shops such as the EA Store and Direct2Drive who are selling SE Pre-Orders, claiming them to include Open Beta access?
Both myself, Iain and Mythic representatives have stated on several occasions that European SE pre-order customers will indeed not gain automatic access to the EU Open Beta as we have chosen to distribute keys through partner websites and the EA store instead.

We remain steadfast on our current line: Open Beta access is not planned to be a part of the European SE Pre-Order offer. In fact, we haven't even launched the SE Pre-Order campaign yet. This is due August 28th. At the end of the day, EA is in charge of distributing WAR in Europe. This is not to say they are to blame; it takes two to tango. They, just as we, are involved in this and we need to find a solution to this mess. GOA seniors have engaged in dialogue with EA and we are all eagerly awaiting the result of this.
This is a very important issue which has a high priority for us for many reasons. Trust me, we are working hard to get an answer to this asap.

Which server types will Europe have?
GOA will be offering the same server types as Mythic: Core, Open-RvR and RP-Core. This is still not fully set in stone and we may or may not offer RP-Open RVR as well. Please understand that this may change before Launch.

Why is the Open Beta so short?
EU players will be able to play WAR for years and years to come. EU players will not, however, be able to test the Open Beta for an extended period of time. Why? It is not needed and there is no time. Below are a couple of quotes from Mark Jacobs regarding the length of the Open Beta.

Mark Jacobs:
"As to the length of the OB, we have never said that it was going to be a month nor have we ever hinted at it that. The vast majority of OBs run by MMORPG companies have not lasted a month. Is a week too short? I wish we could have made it longer (maybe 2 weeks) but the timing just didn't work out."

Mark Jacobs:
"As to whether one week will be enough, well, it wouldn't be if we weren't already doing the scale of testing we are already doing but given the testing that will be going on over the next 3 weeks, I think it will be."

Which payment methods are planned for WAR?
I'm afraid I don't have confirmed information on payment methods as of now, but I have made enquiries about this and will get back as soon I can. Until then, I'll simply share the information from our press release: beside subscriptions, we will offer pre-paid 60-day Game Cards via participating retailers.

With North American players being treated a Preview Weekend and guaranteed Open Beta access for instance, it seems the American beta is both bigger and more important. Is this so?
Whereas the exact number of invites planned for EU and US will stay internal for now, I can say that there will be many, many European Beta Players. Basically, the Warhammer franchise has its origins in the UK and Warhammer have always had a stronger hold on European gamers than US gamers. WAR will be big in Europe and so will the Open Beta.

If I’ve pre-ordered the game and my local retailer fail to provide it to me on September 18th, will I be unable to play?
Whereas EA will do everything in their power to make sure WAR is distributed on-time in all language areas, mistakes and delays are bound to happen with such a large release. To counter this, we will enable Head Start players to continue playing the game a few days after release, even though they may not actually have the full game yet. Whereas the end of this period is not finalised, the date we are looking at right now is September 22nd. Unless a full retail code is entered by this date, the account will be closed and remain so unless activated.

Rumours about UK price cut
This is a big one, naturally. As far as I know, these rumours origin from a blogger (forgot which) who called EA to ask about the UK prices, only to be told that they were lower than those announced in our Press Release last week.

As of now, the information we have at hand is those stated in named PR document. If there are any changes to the UK pricing, we will announce this. I've made enquiries about the truth behind these rumours, but I'm afraid I have nothing solid to go on so far.

Will there be an EU WAR Herald and a Realm War page?
There will not be an EU Herald as such, but its features is in one way or another to be found at war-europe. We will certainly have some sort of Realm War feature, I just don't have any details on this.

What is your advice to players who are considering buying the SE Pre-Order from the EA Store or the Direct2Drive show?
There is no reason to rush into buying the SE Pre-Order especially as the Standard Edition - unlike the Collectors Edition - is not subject to limited supplies. August 28th is one week away from now and there will be plenty of SE Pre-Order boxes to go about. Also, by then, the confusion surrounding the offers provided by the EA Store and direct2buy will surely have evaporated.

SE Pre-Order customers will have plenty of time between August 28th and the Head Start to insert codes and download the client and once you receive the actual box at launch, you'll also gain access to the in-game bonuses associated with this offer.

Phew, if you read all that, you are true WAR fans!

Peace, Love and WAAAAGH!!

Can I keep the toons I play in open beta when the game launches?  I don't want to ruin my Dwarven Engineer experience at launch, if I have to replay it.

When does the headstart.. start?

not sure, but for Standard edtion 3-4 days has been mentioned, and a bit longer for CE...although, its a bit strange, since open beta is probably just about a week or so... makes little sense so far, but try checking out this..

I think it would be unreasonable to expect WH to heal himslef for 125 (which is roughly 10% of their health pool at R10) with every shot. War Priest (one of the healer classes) has an ability with a similar mechanic (only it heals whoever is the priest's defensive target and has a small aoe) and it heals for ~40 with every hit and you need to actively use this ability to have this effect, it's not a buff.

Based on the above, I think it's supposed to heal for a fraction of the bonus damage granted by the buff. But I was wrong before smile

PVE skill perhaps?
From what I was able to ascertain reading various forums it looks as if it's "working as intended" and is supposed to only heal 50% of the "bonus" damage.
While 125 point heal may be too much a 25 point heal is pretty useless. R10 sorceress were consistently hitting my WH for 650+ points of damage due to their insane crit rates, A Black Ork will easily hit for 100-125 with an ability etc. Add in the fact that the heal only works off executions which in turn require accusations(combo points) to trigger so it's not spamable.
I just think they should either up the heal to a usefull amount or simply remove the skill and replace it with something folks will use.

Most of what has been said here I can agree on - one thing though - start getting some regular excercise, and you will get a lot more energy, getting you through the day...

other than that, suck it up kiddo, a lot of things are getting a lot better from now on for you...especially the sex ;-)

Take a look at the dwarf at the cover of the warhammer fantasy rpg book...look at the chest size of the dwarf, the size of his arms, and of course, the pure savage fury in his face, testamenting to his adrenaline pumped body...

Now, take your average orc, somewhat dumb, lazy, and not really that skilled in combat, since they have size going for them...

see? stereotyping goes both ways ;-)

Anyways, I'd actually enjoy playing a dwarven tank, and rp'ing one... And, I guess I'll be needed a lot then if the above is the general consensus :-)

...leveling a character in a couple of weeks

Out of curiosity, which MMO allows you to level in a couple of weeks?

If you're talking about /played - then most current MMOs allow that. If not, then it's all about how much you play during the day - where it still takes at least a month for casual players in WoW and those with a similar curve. I believe it's common to level to 70 in ~7-8 days /played (WoW) on average - so you can do the math yourself.

ugh...that took me 19 days with my first lvl 60....damn RP'ing...

one of the greatest games I've ever played, would never let you die...and I absolutely loved it... Secret of the Monkey Island - they even joked about it ingame... anyways ,for me, its the journey, the mood, the setting and the whole package together, that makes a game. In cases of games like Doom, death is certainly a large part of it, and as such, you SHOULD be punished for it, for it adds to the adrenalin experience...

"oh god, oh god, we're all going to die" ;-)
7662  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / [MMO's] Realisticly, what did you expect? on: August 25, 2008, 06:42:15 PM
So, I've thought about this quite a bit, and, I must say, I'm confused...

Every time there's a new MMO, or a big change to one, people get very excited... They talk about this will be the next-gen MMO, the WoW-killer and so on, and other say "nah, same ol' same ol"..

so, realisticly, what do you expect, when a new MMO releases? What will make the game "good" to you? I have a feeling that most of us here, are (jaded) old-time-gamers, i.e. we've played a lot of games, and seriously, how much have games changed over the last 5 years or so? Not much, and, I dont see anything truly revolutionary coming this way for a long time, due to constraints of our gaming-rigs and of course, the nature of gaming itself.

This leads to disappointment when the new game arrives, and after a few months, most of us here, have moved one..a few hardcore ones stay behind, and once in a while, we return to it...

I think, that what most of us here are looking for, isnt the next-gen MMO, but, a new thing...something shiny and new, and not the same old thing we've seen so many times before, in new clothing...

so, realistically, what do you expect, when a new MMO comes out? What would be YOUR game you could play forever!!

I also have an older system that is obviously not ideal (though I could re-download to my wife's which is a bit newer).

Athlon XP 2800
1GB ram
Radeon X800 GTO

first off, I assume you'r running xp? Vista needs 2gb ram to run the game, I seem to remember, and generally, you'd be a lot better of with some more ram. Rendering devices is your graphics card, you should always update that to the newest edition of driver - both for perfomance but also for it to actually work with newer games :-)

Devs said the intro was supposed to run like a tutorial, breaking you easy into the game, thus, the first level is of course, pretty easy to deal with. I imagine, that as you start out without major powers, and have to earn them, the game gets harder. Also, for me the storyline is a huge part of wanting to play this game.

One of the reasons I loved MGS4 and Assasins Creed, was the storylines in them.

Anyways, downloading the demo now, cant wait!!

seems to me like a pointless argument...you feel that way - fine, other feel another way, also fine.

I for one am very excited - of course, my prediction is that exactly the same will happen in this game for me, as in any other MMO. I'll play it like mad, post stuff here like mad for a few months, then, I'll cancel the subscribtion, and return to it every other odd month, and have some fun. The game looks good enough for some continued fun, the same way WoW and vanguard has given me.

The only thing that could really keep me in it, is a great rp guild, and some RP support from War as well, giving a few options to really rp the way Warhammer fantasy RP is supposed to be rp'ed :-)

Ello peeps! Another refugee from OO here, dragging his tired body to Gamingtrends forums, after a long and fruitless search in the desert for his home.

Happy to meet you all, and looking forward to seeing what kind of strange people frequent these boards..eh, I mean, nice and interesting, of course..

not so surprising, although, the first part of my last paragraph is the true prophecy it seems... ;-)

Holy moses, you guys do an awesome job of doing a great write-up on this! thanks a lot!
I can already tell, my pre-order wasnt in vain :-)

A few questiosn though, about servers - are there any RP servers? How many character slots can you have on each server? or how does that work? Also, will it be possible to have both order and Destruction toons on the same server? Thanks! and keep up the good work!

yeah, saw the us site had opened up for beta code entering now - good luck with that, guys :-)

Us euro'es will have to wait it seems, until they deem it important enough to update the euro site with the same options...

for any europeans interested in what/whens for the euro part of the game, take a look here, where an offical GOA q&a is located

I still say that if I was you, I'd gamble on playing on the US servers with a US copy of the game.  You'd have greater lag, but you'd be playing with such good people. slywink
I'm very tempted, actually! I still fondly remember the battles I've had with some of you guys in Battlefield 2 :-)

But, I pre-ordered the euro version, and until I know, whether the lag is an issue, I'll stick with that :-)
