Yep, exact same thing happened to me.  I did the first puzzle, now it says I have no assassins available for the first real mission.  On top of that I think the service has been spotty at best, it's down right now but was up this morning.

Ubi really screwed this launch up royally.  I think Unity will be the last full price game I pick up by them.  If I even bother with Rogue it will have to be heavily discounted and on sale.

Rogue on the other hand is getting excellent reviews, and is said to have refined what gameplay existed in Black Flag, which was excellent. I'll be getting Rogue for sure - either on PC or once it arrives on next-gen consoles, which will probably happen sometime next year.

By the way, does anyone else immediately think of Luna Lovegood from the Harry Potter movies whenever Auri appears in the books? I can't help it, but she keeps popping back in my head every single time. I told a friend of mine about this, and he said that it was the same for him too. There's just something about how that character is written.

Hah, I just started a re-read of the second book and totally think of Luna Lovegood as Auri - rather funny.

Love the books, but the first one is heads above the second in story and quality in my opinion.

There is another book in the same excellent storytelling style you guys need to read then - Peter V. Brett "The Painted man" - I actually think the US title was something different. The first book is VERY good, and has worldbuilding unlike anything I've seen in recent years. Unfortunately, his second book is....not very good and changes perspective which annoys most people I talk with about it. Anyways - its very much worth a read, and I'd say the first book is just as good as Name of the Wind.

I've been invited to an alpha to this (no NDA anywhere yet) and sadly, have no interest in it. It seems a lot like Demons Souls, which I never could get into. I'll be sure to report back if there is no NDA on actual gameplay.
6  Non-Gaming / Forum and Site Feedback / Re: The forums - how can we improve the experience? on: September 18, 2014, 10:27:36 AM
I don't visit here much these days, but thought I'd chime in so you get some feedback, and perhaps get the thread rolling.

I fear that integrating the forum into the frontpage will be the deathknell of it, at least for the elder generation of forumgoers you have here. It depends entirely on how you integrate it of course, but the shadowrun online solution is not very elegant in my opinion. I dislike that the forum isn't apart from the front of the site and that of course is a personal preference.

That said, I agree you have to do something, or the forums will be dead in a few years. I mean, just look at how little feedback there is over 5 days. Perhaps this is the solution? I don't know, but it will be interesting to watch, and I wish you the best of luck with it!

I'm not arguing with you first of all . I like playing nice so I'm glad we can keep it that way. Also I'm glad you are enjoying it, as I really want to a lot more. But this could have been so much more. It's really a tiny world.

Not sure why you would think we aren't keeping it nice?

Anyways - I never played Halo, so perhaps I don't have the warm fuzzy memories I keep hearing people talk about and thats probably also a factor. Did Halo feature a large open world? I remember trying a Halo once, where I was on a spaceship, got shot down, and had to go...somewhere?

May I also ask what level you are? Since you say its a tiny world? I actually find some of the worlds pretty big - Venus is enormous! I do dislike the moon, though - so damn boring.

I think the reason I like it, is the minimalistic rpg systems it has actually. I love levelling up skills and weapons, and the hunt for better weapons, for more light on armor at lvl 20 (I'm level 22 right now) is pretty fun as well, IF you like this kind of gameplay. It is, like Tilt says, an MMO at heart, with all the great and bad stuff that comes along with that.

I do enjoy the PVP A lot as well - Control has been fun to play, which is the only pvp I've tried. That has 5 different maps I've seen so far, and there are 4 (5?) different pvp style of matches in right now. The vehicular combat is probably another. If each pvp style has 4 or 5 maps, thats already a LOT of content, especially for a game, where this is only one half of the game.

Strikes are really, really fun to play - So intense and dependent on good gameplay that I'm happy most of those I've teamed up with have been competent. I can't wait to try out a raid as well!

As you can probably tell, I really like the game, and the different stuff I can do in it. I'll never be the one to have 100 marks in crucible and vanguard each week, but I'll still have a ton of fun playing it.

Eh no? Did anyone say anything about charging for it?

The Forbes article I linked to did. They're releasing a $20 DLC pack almost immediately, followed by another.

Those will release in december as has always been the plan - Hence the season pack.

Harpua - I don't know what to tell you. I have probably 30 hours in this game already and all of them were damn fun. That's already a lot for a single game, and I expect to play this for a long time. I realize my tastes may not run similar to yours, but saying that the game is severely lacking is at best an exaggeration. Its systems may not be to your liking, and thats perfectly understandable, but everything they said would be there, is there.

Its not like they lied and kept things hidden - Heck, they've even had an open beta of the game to make sure you knew what the game was all about.

I did the first strike mission last night.  I had waited a bit as I didn't have enough of an open window and I've heard the strikes were long.  Well, that much is true.  Long and monotonous.  1 MacGuffin fight around a Ghost, then a long protracted battle against a walker, only to end with another boss fight against a giant eyeball.  Not exactly a highlight mission imo.

<shrugs>

I loved that mission.
Then I'm not sure I'm quite the target audience.  I like the combat, I just wish there was more of the variety that made the Halo games enjoyable.  More weapon types, more enemy types and different mission types.  If every mission of Halo CE had ended with a capture and hold or a bullet-sponge enemy (or more than one), then we wouldn't be looking back on the games with any form of affection.  Where are the epic vehicle battles?  The escapes from certain doom on the back of a 'Hog?  The walker they have here doesn't have any of the fun of fighting the old Halo Scarab.  No variety in the fight, just poor tons of lead into a weakspot so you can then do it against an even weaker spot.  If they had added in ways to disable the walker's guns or it's ability to maneuver, then it would have made a much better fight.  instead we get a 6 legged beast that doesn't show any more advanced AI than a Serious Sam enemy.

Like I said, I'm having fun with it now, but this isn't as good as I was hoping it would be.

RE: Vehicle battles - Wait a bit for levelling up, and a new game mode will be released this month, with vehicle battles.

When you beat the game you can select 20+.  You can't alter patrol difficulty or strike difficulty.   Strikes are weird because there are level 20+ versions of all the strikes that are in the strike playlist.  Makes some of the strike bounties annoying to take as it's either do the low level one or hope you get it in random.

Wait - so I can redo all my story missions at lvl 20, where the monsters are lvl 20 as well? I DID NOT KNOW THIS! I am lvl 20 and just signed up for the strike missions last night.

My turn to share a tidbit - If you unlock a subclass at level 15, every character, whether created or not, will have their subclass unlocked from the start.

The game is plenty of fun in short bursts, but I can't take too long sessions with it. It gets too repetitive for that.

Apart from the story issues, I think one of the biggest issues this game has is that it doesn't make the grind fun. Look at Diablo 3 Reaper of Souls and how it treats its grind: You get something cool all the time, even if you only play for half an hour. You earn new levels constantly, even after hitting max, you find awesome loot with great regularity, improving your followers and crafters is quick and easy, and so on. There's always a carrot hanging from a stick very close to your face, and you get to nibble on it often enough to keep your interest.

In Destiny however, the carrot is far away and you barely get to touch it. For example, you can do a whole bunch of bounties, missions and hand-ins for a faction and still barely make a dent in the progress bar that you have to fill to even reach the first rank. I'm up to level 15, and I still haven't progressed in anything except that level. The loot isn't interesting enough to be all that fun to find. They could have gone a long way by adding many more increments to reputation leveling, so that instead of 2-3 ranks to earn, you'd have 20-30 with smaller benefits from each one. Looking at the amount of effort required to grind these factions, I can't see myself ever bothering. I'm probably just going to level to 20 and then start another character instead.

With Diablo 3 I'm max level on one character with 73 paragon levels, and I'm still playing. It keeps things interesting from start to end.

I'm lvl 20 and almost at reputation level one with Vanguards - That from...3-4 days of playing this. The marks are where it gets grindy though, seemingly. I need 120 and have 3. A strike seems to give very few marks as well.

I am considering levelleing in PVP instead, since as a Titan Defender I do quite well there and its pretty fun playing Control.

Why not just order the digital guardian on ps4?

Landmark is pure sandbox, and it will remain mostly that way. Its not an MMO with quests and the like, even though the developers have at some point talked about that.

Basically, what they are doing is asking people to help them create content for EQ Next and help test the editor they use for it as well.

For many companies, its not enough being profitable. In Denmark for instance Maersk (One of the worlds biggest shipping companies) divested itself of a retail chain that was profitable, but just not enough. The energy could be used on other parts that were MORE profitable.

Some companies create synergies though with other parts of their business, and I imagine Xbox does this.
