Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Quake 4 annoying sound loop question.
|
on: October 25, 2005, 03:37:30 PM
|
|
Quake 4 is a fun game with high production standards and runs well on my machine with one exception. During the start of some dialogue I get an annoying loop of sound, with the first 3 seconds of sound being repeated over and over again about four times.
This dosen't happen all the time,( ie: the shooting and blowing up parts, or random background sounds), but seems to be initiated by dialogue.
All my system components have been updated to the latest drivers. The only thing I can think of is that this game doesen't like Creative SB Live Cards.
Any thoughts or similar problems?

Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Oblivion on a less than min/spec cpu

Posted: Tue Oct 18, 2005 11:06 am Post subject: Oblivion on a a less than min-spec machine
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- How many of you fellow CG'ers are going to try Oblivion even if your cpu is below the min specifications?
I will try it simply because in the past I have often gotten acceptable frame rates and resolution in games which show a min/spec higher than my computer.
Granted it won't be played with all the bells and whistles but each custom built PC performs a little differently and if the game is playable its worth the gamble until upgrade funds become available.

Haven't played any of these, but they seem to have a high rating.
Should I start with Grand theft Auto 3 or go right to Vice City, or do you suggest another option?

I am not sure there is a way in this game RR, but if I find one I will let you know.
Yes. By default, the key is not assigned, but there is a command to have your characters break apart and go solo. Dig through the keyboard config to find it. Can you point me to where I would find the keyboard config file.

Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / What could cause this? Monitor question.
|
on: August 23, 2005, 01:46:26 AM

A friend has a new monitor, about three months old. On start up as soon as the desk top loads there appears to be some type of interference. It seems to start at, the on screen mouse pointer tip and spread in reddish brown lines. It only covers the part of the screen to the left of the mouse pointer.
It comes an goes. Most of the time the monitor is bright and sharp with no distortion. A telephone is on his desk with the cpu and the teleplhone cable at time is across the mouse wire. I have deguassed the monitor and removed the cross wire, but it still behaves as above.
The mouse is an old logitec two button type.
Any ideas? Everything else works fine.

Thanx will take a look.
Here's a tuffy. Anyone know if its possible to tilt the camera to a level view at the final zoom or close-up position? This would have been nice since its hard to see your charater's face at the present.

For those of you who have played the Neverwinter Nights series and have installed the Community Expansion Pack can you explain briefly what it does and whether it is worth installing.
Is it just gaming tweaks, or is it like and expansion of the game world with new quests and content?
Thanx all.

Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / DVD vs Cd
|
on: July 08, 2005, 02:27:22 AM

I just recently installed a DVD on my cpu primarily because some of my recent buys have been 5 or 6 disks as opposed to a single DVD.
Other than the obvious convenience, do you find that DVD vs CD is generally a better purchase? I know the original game content should be the same. but is the extra content worth the extra cash?

Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / A take on the new Bard's Tale

Well it finally came. Six cds in paper sleeves and a small manual. Manual is adequate but doesn't cover everything. Install takes just under 6 gigabytes. I didn't install the previous versions. Game installed with out incident.
I played for a couple of nights before arriving at these conclusions.
The GOOD. I am playing at 1600x1200 when everything set to max. Graphics are very good. Voice acting is well done. Lot of scottish and british voice work. Music is good, fitting the genre. Controls are somewhat remappable. Comes with an in game map. View area is not cluttered with stat boxes etc. Runs stable. Story seems interesting.
The BAD. Suffers from consolitus. Save points instead of save anywhere. Not a real problem but is annoying to have to come all the way back to a save point. Top down view is hard to get used to. Haven't played a top down since Ultima 6 on the Amiga. Zoom factor is alomost useless. Degree of zoom really minor. So far ranged weapons appear useless because once the enemy appears on screen they are too close to make a ranged attack effective. If the zoom worked better this would not be a problem. Camera view is extremely limited. Game is top down until you initiate a conversation then it switches to a cinematic. If you have played games like Morrowind and Neverwinter Nights where you have complete camera control, this ican be really annoying.
Bottom line: The good points are enough to keep me playing for now. But a 6 gig footprint better equate to 6 gigs of fun or out it goes.
If you are thinking of this one wait till the price drops. _________________ You can run, but you'll just die tired.

I agree qith Booner and Rage, but I also liked Home World Cataclysm.
It is a little easier and has some great missions and a story line occurng in the Homeworld Universe but different than the other two.
Same style of gameplay.

Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Hardware tip for Dungeon Lords

Its a fun game. There are some problems but the more you play it the more fun it is. The company has already put out the first patch and the second is on the way. There is a good discussion of this game at Octopus Overlords that should answer all your questions.

Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Hardware tip for Dungeon Lords

Here is something I did that makes the game much more enjoyable. Not sure if everyone can take advantage of it but I am sure some can.
I bought the CLAW when Pirates of the Carribean came out. It is a device that allows you to map keys and sounds to a hand controller. Great device for straightening out any games with control issues. Has worked great for dozens of games I have used it on and easy to program.
For Dungeon Lords I programmed the keys I wanted, but also used the Claws shift keys to program sounds. One of the big problems for me was lack of suitable sound in he environment. So I downloaded music and sounds to suit whatever area my character is in. If its a dungeon I hit a Claw key and get creepy music, a forest, bird sounds, walking the road Morrowind music, lots of others. Since there are lots of mappable keys you can even have several tunes for the same environment.
There are other controllers out there that do this, but since I only have the Claw, can only speak for it. But it works great and was one of the best investments I have made towards gamimg.
Sure fixes a lot of problems with rushed games. Just a thought and maybe a tip for all.

Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Space trading games?

The Privateer Mod for Freelancer is very good, a complete make-over. Can be picked up from Lancers Reactor.
Original Privateer upgraded for XP with hi-res graphics is out there too. Packaged under Vega Strike, if you are into retro.
I didn't find X2 the Threat all that bad. If you want to concentrate on trading.
I have played the original Elite, also Frontier and there is still nothing that matches it.
Although not exactly what you are looking for but Home World Cataclysm was an excellent game.
