1  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / DDO - I'm done with WoW on: May 19, 2006, 07:39:35 PM

I think I found about 2 quests in Hinterlands.  As opposed to the some 7 that I had with horde.  Winterspring is way to big for someone whos 50.  Unless you arent soloing.

BUT, there seem to be a overabundance of level 20 Alliance quests and the horde dont get to many really.  There seems to be about a 3-4 level gap in quests.  some 18's...then nothing much till about 22.

Not buying it wholesale sorry. While I can agree that in many zones, alliance quests dry up somewhat past 53-54 there are in fact plenty to do. You just have to move around more than before where you could usually go from say 30-40 in one zone. You have a few in the hinterlands, mid to upper felwood is good till 56-57 (grinding on deadwood furbolgs besides quests), winterspring, WPL, EPL etc. etc.. My problem has been finding the best spot that I've not already played through that won't bore me. With my third alliance character to hit 55 or higher, I tend to just grind for cash these days to level.  biggrin
2  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Alienware or Sager Laptop? on: March 13, 2006, 07:54:38 PM
Looks good to me. With those specs you'd have no problem playing oblivion, maybe not at default screen res though. Also, as for the sound I don't know much about the sager's but if its that bad you can always get a soundblaster audigy laptop soundcard. You might also want to look at the intel dual core laptops that are out now, "core duo" as those might give you even more longevity in system performance.

Also, check out if you haven't already, they have sager forums, alienware etc..

A slower processor (2.0Ghz) with a screaming videocard (GeForce 7800) or a faster processor (3.0Ghz) with a slightly earlier model videocard (GeForce 6800)?

It depends on which CPU the 2.0Ghz one is.  It it is a Pentium M then it performs better than it's Ghz rating indicates.

Plus the video card is often the bottleneck these days.

Not making a reccomendation at this point, just something to investigate.  Find out specifics on the CPU's (models) and get back to us.

The processor on the Sager is a Pentium-M 2.0 GHz/533 FSB.
The processor on the Alienware is a Pentium 4 3.0 GHz 630 with HT/800 FSB 2MB.

All the reading I'm doing on the PCTorque forums indicates that the audio quality on the Sager is rather poor.  Just figured I would throw that out.

Video. Video. Video. The 7800 will spank a 6800 and last you that much longer. A P4 laptop system should really be considered desktop replacement system thats "mobile". The p4 will eat up battery power far faster than a Pentium M (Mobile) chip, run hotter and speed wise I'd doubt the p4 is that much faster than a 2.0 M chip if at all. More megahertz does not mean faster.

Motorola has a set of programs called "Mobile phone tools" that lets you transfer stuff to your phone like ringtones. They sell it on their site (you'll need a usb data cable) or you can probably find a version on the net. This site is reputable (if slow) for getting the cd/cable cheap

Check out too for info on ringtones/software stuff.

Also, heres the 24 ringtone site:

Unless you're getting a really good deal on 2 6600gt's, its cheaper and generally a more powerful option to get a 7800gt ($270 after rebate on some cards). Just look at the chart from the link posted. 2 6800gts beat out a 7800gt by a whopping 3 whole fps.

You might want to recheck that, given the pending indictment of William Jefferson, D-Louisanna for demanding bribes to help set up African telecom deals.  This is the idiot who comandeered a heavy NG truck during Katrina to go to his house in New Orleans in an attempt to destroy eivdence.  If you think Jack Abrhamoff just directed money to Republicans, you have a shock awaiting you.

Once again, the battlecry of "they do it too".

Unlike Republicans, the Democrat voters don't defend criminals in their party.  You do the crime, you do the time.

  Oh, thats just rich. I love it. Dems are just as corrupt, just as in bed with extremists and corporations/lobbiysts. Here's an easy example, where was N.O.W. during the whole Clinton thing? No charges of sexual harrassment? No condemnation? They were strangely silent on that one. Perhaps that was because he was "their man" passing legislation they wanted. Lets not even go into presidential pardons. Thats a time honored tradition that knows no party limitation.

Ah yes, this horror show. An important part:
Another female officer, who didn‘t particularly care for my client decided to bring it to the attention of the superintendent of the naval academy, who‘s under a lot of pressure for the handling of sexual assaults at the naval academy..

IIRC, its some Lt. Cmdr. who has a poll shoved up her arse that continued on about this after it had been settled. Apparently the Lt. was also talking (badly) about his ex-wife. Oh the horror.

The cookies will be pretty much worthless after the Christmas content goes away. The reason people buy them is to finish the content-specific quest. After that's gone, they become little more than special level 1 food.

Snowballs, at least, have some practical value with the "toy" factor. Also that new item that requires a snowball to turn you into a snowman seems to have unlimited uses, so that will also make snowballs popular in the off-season.

But good thinking cashing in while you can. I had no idea the cookies would be that lucrative, especially since the quest isn't really worth much. Then again, never underestimate the ability of WoW players to overpay for stupid stuff. I sold one of those dragon whelpling pets for 95g last week, and they don't do anything except follow you around.

But those dragons are "rare" and "cool"!

Any and all 'music CDs' must be playable on any stereo system (or car, boombox, whatever), so you'll be able to make a copy of your CD that way.

Or just get a Mac or use Linux. Neither OS will pay any attention to the software on the CD (as it's Windows only), so rip your music that way. biggrin

Nope, it hits Macs too apparently.

From what I've read, it doesn't exactly affect Macs yet. There's some software on the CD that can be installed onto a Mac, but it's not forced in any way unlike what happens on the PC.

Yeah, its a bit confusing but appears to not be the same thing as rootkit.

19  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / better processor for gaming on: October 20, 2005, 07:48:13 PM
If you have the money to spend, a dual core system with the AMD 3800 is probably the best bet for future proofing. But if you're just gaming mostly then I'd go with the 3500. The intel dual cores are a slapdash Intel solution to amd's dual core chips and thus  show how quickly there were designed and brought to market. Most reviews show very lackluster performance and the D series chips tend to suck up a lot of power (generally twice as much as amd stuff) and have really high temps.

Check out places like anandtech or tomshardware.

24  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / WoW - Rogue or Hunter on: August 24, 2005, 06:54:35 AM
I'd go rogue. A hunter is good at solo but I'm just amazed at my rogue's (27) damage and how quick I can kill. Sure, I have to be more careful with multiple mobs but I have sap, evasion, sprint and vanish to run away to fight another day. Perhaps its because my rogue is character #3 beyond lvl 25 so I know what I'm doing but I'm leveling quite fast with it compared to my hunter and druid.

XP only isn't exactly true. The demo ran fine for me with win2k SP4.  biggrin

Anyway, I hate to break to folks with win98 but its 7 years old. Its not gonna always run the latest games, pick up an upgrade disk and be welcomed into the future. XP is infiniately more stable than 98, especially with gaming.

As for DS2, the demo showed me that the save game system, the corn ball voice acting, and the horrible avatars/character graphics have made this a gogamer sale deal 6-12 months from now if ever. The demo did make me want to reinstall NWN though.

I am a big fan of Athlon64, but I have had persistent sound conflicts with my system, so at least do some research.

Things like that make me stay away from AMD processors. I just don't want to deal with compatibility problems. For now, I'm sticking with Intel. As for the PS, I heard that there are converter cables that will enable an old power supply to run new motherboards. I'll look into it once I decide on a motherboard model. Thanks for the suggestions so far, guys!

Eh, don't bother with the adapters etc., just get a good 2.0 rated powersupply to make sure you don't have any problems with the video card or the 12v rail or needing the extra 4 pin connector for the mobo. Look at FortronSource or Antecs True series. A quiet, quality PSU is so worth the expense.

That is the best thing I've seen thus far this month.

On topic:

As long as there are people in the USA who are willing to hire workers on the sly because they can get them for a cheap price, there are going to be illegal immigrants.

Rather than focusing so much attention on, "walling up," our borders perhaps we should focus on enforcing the laws we already have regarding undocumented labor. If it's unnatractive to come to the USA illegally, it seems to me that less people will do so.

I don't blame the immigrants at all. If I lived in some shit hole place in Mexico, and my only prospect for the future is to become an old decrepit guy living in a shit hole, I'd be looking to get out and get into whatever I felt offered me the best opportunity, by whatever means neccessary.

If I knew that traipsing across the border into the USA would only find me destitute because no one would hire me even for a day to pick beans, I'd be less inclined to want to go there illegally.

But that's just me, I don't know the answer, but I do know that the influx of illegal immigrants into the USA is a problem and needs to be addressed.

I agree with this. You can't keep blaming illegal immigrants while turning blind eyes on those US business that hire illegal immigrants. Stop hiring them and they'll stop cross border to US. No one want to risk everything to cross border to become bums.

But some of more paranoid bigots seem to think that illegal immigrants come to conquer

This is of course the problem. Any time folks get close to going after the corps. hiring illegals, polits slap it down (and its far from being limted to one particular party doing that). Its quite obvious to me, that most folks in washington are not looking beyond their little bubble world, aka only inside the beltway. This country needs immigration yes, but its out of fucking control and its in no way as safe as it could be. People need to get active, harrass their so called elected officials and rally to get laws changed and the ones we have, actually enforced as best as possible.

It sure as hell isn't ahead of my computer...  And you have to remember those spec potentials are way overblown.  NEVER, have the console makers done an apples to apples comparison, and there's no way either console contains a better processor than my AMD FX-53 and 2 Gig of fast RAM.

Man, I hate it when people start these "consoles are better than all pc's".... "pc's are dead!" threads.  If I were to run [email protected] on my system and compare it to X-Box 360, my system would blow it away.  Like I said, console makers and marketing experts do the exact same thing as Worldcom and Enron... creative arithmetic.  In fact, one of my game-dev friends has already said the X-Box 360 does not have the cpu horsepower to run the kind of AI they can do on the pc.

I seriously doubt, as a game machine, that your system is better than the XBox 360 given it has 3 3.2 Ghz processors and a video card that is more powerful than anything on the market.  The RAM doesn't make up for the massive resources your OS is taking up in the background when you run a game.  Even at $500, the XBox 360 is still a far better value than what you have.

I'm no console apologist (or even fan) but you have your head in the sand if you think anything you can buy for a reasonable price today compares to the hardware capabilities of these new systems.

I'll believe the 360 and ps3 specs and what they can do when I see them first hand. I seem to recall the PS2 being "all that and a bag of chips" when it first came out...

No, it isnt your knee-jerk accusation that liberals make excuses for everyone and hate America.  It is the rational realization that the CAUSES for the problems you describe have nothing to do with a rise in the population, be it of legal or illegal people, and have everything to do with a failure of the system to maintain those services.

Im saying the 'blame the illegal immigrants' excuse has no merit.  But keep trying to defend it, it's amusing to watch.

Hmm, so you're saying that an unprecidented rise in immigration, both illegal and legal since say, the 1950s has nothing to do with the failure of the system? Its the system's fault, the state/fed governments fault for all the bad planning, for not accurately 100% predicting where population trends would go, for not finding more and more ways to get more resources like water (which, is finite believe it or not)?

I'm all for allowing immigration, but if we grow too much, too fast, we're all going to suffer and likely end up like a 3rd world country with no middle class, just the haves and the have nots (something I'm sure many corporations would have no real problem with..more money/power for them). Stability will go out the window then. Will prices go up without illegal immigration? Likely yes, indeed they will but many companies will also have to start paying living wages to the "blue collar" workers in this country. If you don't, no is going to be able to afford to buy their consumer products they need to survive as a business.

Not everyone, despite laudable education goals will be able to get a college degree and make over 50k a year, hell even grads these days aren't guaranteed that. Having more and more illegals coming into this country working for low (but high for them) wages while not assimilating into our country/culture, sending back money to the mother country does not always help us. Do illegal immigrants work solely in farming these days? They're moving into construction and other fields as well. Those low wages are driving down wages as a whole in our economy, just as is competition from other countries' goods are. As for the whole "illegals never see refunds back from the IRS", there are stories of the IRS issuing illegals refunds with a tax id. Go talk to the farmers on the border about illegals and their trash and how the EPA then goes after them for not keeping their land clean.

Multiculturalism and its "we're all okay, and one big family" isn't a total load of crap but its got problems. We're a multicultural world and more tolerance, understanding is a good thing but as a country, we have to look out for ourselves. If we continue with this, "send us your huddle masses, endlessly, we've got room", while not keeping some sort of unifying identity as a country and managing that growth wisely, we're doomed to balkanize, fracture and split apart. The New Roman Empire will fall and crumble under the weight of massive bureacracy and far flung expenses. If we can keep our economy strong, stay out of debt, we can then deal with growth at home, we can then help other countries deal with their own problems with aid more effectively, at their homes, instead of taking their excess populations and making it our direct problem too.

I have no problem with the Fed. Gov. picking up these health costs, we should help those in need when we can, illegal or legal but the costs will break us with our current systems in place. Despite what many think, the US taxpayer is not a friggin money tree with an endless supply of green. What this whole situation highlights is this: Our immigration policies are not working and they are draining our resources faster than we can replenish them. If we don't change, hunker down in uncertain times (economically, technologically and politically) there isn't going to be a US to stand up for those "huddle masses" anymore.
