The bigger issue is that the YQ feels she needs to read it AND that he needs to read it.

Obviously, YK is not getting the job done.

42  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Acid motherf****ing reflux! on: July 21, 2014, 12:24:00 PM
I never had it and then, in my freshman year in college, I had an appendectomy. Afterwards, I would get acid reflux bad enough to keep me awake at night but not horrible. Then, one day after staying up all night and eating crap, I had the worst case I've ever had. It was non-stop for hours and just felt like my chest and throat were disintegrating from the inside. I went to the doctor and they had me drink this numbing agent that calmed it down (or at least it was gone by the time the numbing agent wore off). After that incident, I started taking Zantac daily (was prescription only at the time). That seemed to control it well enough; I never got it while taking the meds. I got off Zantac after about 6 months and haven't had acid reflux. *knock on wood*.

In any case, the point being if it's bad enough that you're throwing up you should 1) go to a doctor or, at the very least, 2) try something like Zantac and see if that helps.

Has there been any changes to the map sizes? My main quibble with Civ Rev was that even the largest maps were too small; it was impossible to avoid the other civilizations even early on in the game.
44  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [TV] Game of Thrones - Season 4 is coming (please mark spoilers) on: June 18, 2014, 01:57:36 PM
FWIW, even from the very beginning of the show they talked about magic and monsters being gone from most of the world but still present beyond the wall. That's one of the reasons there's a wall in the first place! Outside of the wall, with just a few instances, there hasn't really been much magic/fantasy (the notable exceptions being the dragons, Melissandre, and the warlock). And notice that all three of those things either come from or take place in the continent across the sea from Westeros.

Haven't most Zelda games been open world? It seems like in most of the ones I've played, you could pretty much go anywhere you want except certain areas were blocked off until you found whatever tool you needed (bombs, boomerang, etc.). How is this Zelda going to be different?

I still never made it past the first season.  I thought it was alright but couldn't see the "best show ever" comments at all.  I've heard things pick up in the second season but can't bring myself to start it up again after so long.

If you didn't like the 1st season, not sure you would like the rest (although Seasons 3 and 4 are incredibly good). I actually thought Season 2 was a bit of a let down, but mainly because they focus on a different set of characters than in the other seasons.

I stopped by a Taco Bell for the first time in a while today. God, it was terrible. And I don't mean that the meat was cheap (which it is) or that the ingredients weren't fresh (which they weren't), but it just tasted bad. I got a chicken burrito and the 5 layer beef burrito and both just tasted like acidic mush. I should've just stuck with the soft tacos as those actually taste like real food.
51  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Fast food menu items you miss on: April 09, 2014, 01:07:38 AM
Not necessarily something that's gone, but I went to Wendy's for the first time in years today. What happened to their dollar menu? A Jr. Cheeseburger Deluxe is now $1.59? A Jr. Bacon Cheeseburger $1.79? As far as I could tell, they only had three items left priced at $.99: a Jr. Cheeseburger (I guess it's just bread, meat, and cheese?), the crispy chicken sandwich, and the value fries.  The 99 cent menu used to be the reason Wendy's was my fast food of choice back in the day. And even the "value" meals are crazy expensive ($6+). Has low quality ground beef gone up in price that much?

Ascension just got some big changes.  There's a new 'promo pack' for sale (those just have a handful of cards) but now the base game is free and the expansion card packs that have already been out are available in a $5 bundle.  The game is now ad-supported in a very strange way.  There are now big annoying full-screen ads, even if you've already made purchases before, but if you know to look in the options menu you can uncheck a box to turn all the ads off.  I read someone say you can disable ads even if you haven't spent any money.

Great deal. I went ahead and bought the bundle. If anyone wants to play online, feel free to friend me. My username is ralph-wiggum.

I just recently finished Avadon: The Black Fortress on my Kindle Fire HD. It was a good game but it was extremely linear. There was an illusion of choice but they really made no difference to the game, story, or quests available (except for the very last choice). There isn't even all that much choice in the skill tree since most skills require you to have equal levels of skills in other tracks (i.e. so you can't just build up one of the three tracks and ignore the other two possible tracks for your class). There was a lot of game there, though; I think it took me ~40 hours to beat it. But by the last 10 hours or so it had gotten fairly repetitive.

I've already vocalized my distaste for this game, but seeing it receive so many GOTY awards is making me feel remorseful and want to go back and give it a second try. Hopefully one day we'll get a "definitive" version of it on the PS4 so I might have that opportunity (already gave my PS3 away to my brother).

Weren't your complaints graphical or something?

It's easily a game of the generation candidate.

I did have an issue with the framerate in a specific section of the game, but mostly I disliked the combat and most of the gameplay mechanics.

So more or less you disliked just about everything? I'm going to go out on a limb and say that maybe it's not worth trying to get another copy of the game.

I'm confused. Does GOAT not equal Greatest of All Time? From Caine's quote and a few other things, it sounds like it is supposed to the worst game of the year?

In 2005 I was living in NC and working in an incredibly boring job. I moved down to Florida in 2007 to get a PhD in biology and somehow, I'm still here.  eek  It's been a great 6 years, though. I should be finishing up in the spring and in the process now of applying for postdocs, so I have no idea where I'll be a year from now. As for gaming, I don't play as much as I used to. I'll still occasionally get into a game and play the hell out of it for a few weeks, but those times seem to come months rather than weeks apart now. Over the last year especially I've gotten into fishing (I've got to take advantage of Florida while I'm still here!) and spent most of my free days out on the water in my somewhat newly purchased kayak.

I don't understand having an allegiance to a console maker. I know people do, but why? Just get whatever has the games/features you want, who cares who makes it? I have a friend that refused to buy an XBox 360 because he's always been a Sony guy and then he complains about games he would like to play on the 360. It's completely ridiculous.
69  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Xbox One Discussion on: November 25, 2013, 03:06:22 PM
This probably doesn't help the XBox's chances in Europe.

Quote
The Xbox One's TV integration suffers noticeable judder in the UK, tests have revealed.

Website HDTVTest.co.uk first flagged up the problem, which occurs when you run a live TV feed from your set-top box, such as a Freeview HD, Sky or Virgin Media box, into Microsoft's console using the HDMI-in port.

The UK and Europe use a 50Hz broadcasting system. The Xbox One outputs at 60Hz, so if you feed it a 50Hz HDMI source, one out of every six frames will be a duplicate, causing judder.

Honestly, even though "Digital TV" is popular, the vast majority of TV programs aren't recorded in 5.1 - so it's not as big a deal for most people - also, home theaters are a drop in the bucket compared to sound bars and TV speaker use (sad but true).

Is that true? Unless it was just being upscaled by my receiver and I didn't realize it, I think most of the big networks broadcast at least their primetime shows in 5.1 as do the movie channels (HBO at least). As gellar points out, setting it up the way you advise would mean any movie/show watched on HBO wouldn't have surround sound.

I can't remember the name of the game, but my worst game was a college basketball game for the PS1. It was a complete mess of a game. I remember simming a season and every team had one player who averaged 90% of their team's points (e.g. Usually ~50 points a game). I was so posses off that I wrote a scathing email to the company. The next day I had a response from their president apologizing for the game!

Is he playing on two screens at once? Awesome? I didn't notice any lag at all.

Forgive my ignorance but why would you ever do that? Or is the video mainly just to show that there isn't lag and most people will play far away from their tv? On that note, does the PS4 need to be on for remote play?

That workout program for the Xbox1 looks great. I don't think I would ever use it, but I'm sure that'll be a big draw for a lot of people.
