2441  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / It's May 12 - finally! XBox/ MTV reminder! on: May 13, 2005, 02:24:38 PM

Yep, I can't believe they didn't show it on the MTV show. Oh well, next week we will get to see it in motion, cause the devs have confirmed a trailer will be released next week for the game.
Yes there will be a trailer and it will floor you.  I know because I did about 90% of the footage for it.

Can't you just show it to us now? We're all brothers here.....
2442  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / It's May 12 - finally! XBox/ MTV reminder! on: May 13, 2005, 02:06:58 AM
Almost all the game footage seemed to be pre-rendered and not in game (minus Perfect Dark and Tony Hawk), did it not? Really hard to tell anything about the games based on the 30 minutes of fluff.
2443  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / LOST - 05/11/05 on: May 12, 2005, 07:40:29 PM
But there's no reason to think that "it" got out before - perhaps once  it was put into the vault it stayed in the vault  (it didn't necessarily come from the vault originally).

Plus, who's to say that there's a latch on the inside? Perhaps there's no handle on either side of the vault.

New theory - maybe the vault is something like Pandora's Box. The light that shone through the vault's window seemed a lot like the light coming from Marcellus' suitcase in Pulp Fiction.

Or maybe I've just been playing too much God of War.
2444  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / LOST - 05/11/05 on: May 12, 2005, 02:02:38 PM
In the previews for next week, they showed the raft being pushed into the water (though never actually making it to the water). Then the showed Sawyer running around in the jungle. I don't know if those clips are in chronological order, but I got the feeling that the raft doesn't make it out.

The only one I can't understand is Sayid.  His logic, if you could call it that, that 'if there is no way to open it from the outside, it must mean it was never meant to be opened from the outside'  certainly had me scratching my head.  I mean, is he afraid of getting caught trespassing or something?  Who gives a crap what was 'meant' to be, just open the frickin' thing!

I think Sayid believes that whatever was locked away in the vault is dangerous - maybe even what killed all the other people. Releasing it, even 16 years later, probably isn't the safest thing to do.
2446  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Pic of Xbox 360 on: May 11, 2005, 05:16:02 PM
I think X-Box 360 is pretty silly myself. What does it even mean? It's coming back to where it started?

I would have gone with something like X².
2447  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Multiplayer RTS: Starcraft, Warcraft 3, or...? on: May 10, 2005, 04:24:27 PM
Starcraft is the best of the RTS games (still), IMO. You are right about the competition, though - anyone still playing it online is probably pretty good. Of course, you could always play team battles or a team vs. a CPU team.

How do you guys finish these games so fast!  I purchased it weeks ago and have not even inserted it into my Xbox yet.

Why buy it when it comes out if you know you aren't going to play it right away? By waiting, you can probably find a better deal on the game (or trade for it).

Preschool? I was still an unreleased egg in my mother's overies!
2455  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Xbox 2? PS3? Revolution? PC? Check out the screens... (56k) on: May 02, 2005, 01:30:41 PM
FWIW (which is probably nothing), a small part of an article in the most recent EGM said that they've heard that some "big name developers" are switching their games from X-Box 360 to PS3 because the PS3 is vastly more powerful. That being said, I wouldn't be surprised if such graphics were possible in the next generation systems.
2456  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Ever find a game you were TOO good at? on: April 27, 2005, 01:31:28 PM
Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo. I really don't know how good I am, but when I used to play it in college no one could ever beat me (and we had a lot of people playing it). I would even play as Dan (who drops only red colored blocks) and still I would win.

You guys might want to stick with the face cover unless you really beat the crap out of your PSP on a daily basis.

I got the Pelican screen guard and it sucks. It applies to the PSP just fine, but it makes the screen look dim and slightly grainy. I'm going to replace it with something better soon.

Edit: doh! I posted this from my brother's account. This is Captain Caveman.

2460  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Nintendo Revolution - touchpad controllers? on: April 21, 2005, 05:05:05 PM
Quote from: "mytocles"

maybe I'm missing something, but how can each game "map out it's own button layout on the controller" - will buttons of some sort be displayed or marked on the touchpad?

That is how I read it - the controller will display the various buttons needed on the touchpad itself. So some games will have more buttons that others and some will have the layout of the buttons differently arranged (I assume this holds true for the d-pad as well).
2461  Non-Gaming / Trading Forum / LF: GBA Castlevania games or Jade Empire on: April 21, 2005, 01:45:45 PM
Preferably Aria of Sorrow, but I'll consider the other two.

Games I have to trade:

Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past (GBA)
Mario Golf (GBA)
Golden Sun (GBA)
Final Fantasy Tactics Advance (GBA)

Katamari Damaci (PS2)

ToEE (PC)
Battlefield: Vietnam (PC)
NeverWinter Nights (PC)
Civ 3 (PC)

PM me if interested. Thanks.
2462  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Nintendo Revolution - touchpad controllers? on: April 21, 2005, 12:53:03 PM
I don't know if this has been discussed before, but the new issue of Game Informer says that their sources (game developers already working on games) tell them that the "revolution" part of Nintendo's new console will be the touchpad game controllers. There will be no analog stick or buttons; rather, each game will map out its own button layout on the controller. The same developers said that Nintendo has told them that no game will be approved for their system unless it uses the unique features of a touchpad (which would seem to hinder ports from other systems).

Has anyone heard this from other sources? Is Game Informer usually reliable about these things (this was the first issue I've read)? I suppose it sort of makes sense considering the DS and all. Personally, if the report is accurate, I'm not sure how mainstream Nintendo's next console can become; no tactile feedback on games (even just in using an analog stick) would seem to be a greatly missed feature.

Do the designers of games like these understand the difference between a puzzle and a chore?  The puzzle in the room is simple: find the buttons, open the door, then hit a button and race to get through the door before it closes.  Easy enough.  But everytime I miss a jump I have to go back to when I entered the room... before I fought a long ass battle.  No option to save at any point in the room.

s

Is this the room where you have to jump over the moving razor blades from platform to platform until you reach an area with multiple doors that need to be opened?

If so, there should be a save point to the left of the room's entrance, right before you jump on the first platform. I saved after I opened any door or killed any monster (it's much easier jumping back to the save point since there is no time limit).

This criticism concerns me more than any other:

Less free-roaming and more tightly scripted than KOTOR (there is nothing, naturally, in the Empire that would encourage planet-hopping around the galaxy as in KOTOR), Jade Empire leads you on a tightly controlled path peppered with "optional" quests.

One of my main complaints about KOTOR was that the game was too linear. If this review is accurate, it looks like Jade Empire is worse than KOTOR in that regard.

My only complaint about the show tonight - the newborn baby didn't look newborn at all. If they are going to try to have a somewhat realistic birthing scene (did anyone else hear the sounds as the baby came out?   ), why have a completely clean baby?

Question - does Progressive Scan make all the difference? I tried to turn it on but apparently my TV doesn't support it. frown

Progressive Scan makes a world of difference; the graphics are much more crisp  in 480p. I do, however, sometimes get some slight distortion with the progressive scan (almost like artifacts). But that is rare enough that I don't really notice it.

There's also those DVD/CD restorers you can buy at Best Buy or EB (called the Game Dr. perhaps). I've used it a couple of times before and it usually works (even for deeply scratched games).
2473  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / How I got me a PSP! on: March 27, 2005, 06:15:14 PM
Way to go Rob. Keep talking good about the PSP and maybe you can convince my brother to get one.

Just as a side note, if anyone is trading in games they might want to try Blockbuster (at least for games for the newer consoles). In general, they give more money than an EB or Gamestop and right now they have a deal where you trade in 3 or more games and get an extra $5 for each one. Add to that deal the fact that Blockbuster almost always has the "buy 2 used games get 1 free deal" and you can really get some good stuff (they usually have newer used games for sale relatively soon). On Thursday, I traded in 4 games and one DVD for more than enough money to get a new copy of God of War from them.  I'm not sure whether you can get cash or if the trade in is only for store credit, though.

I have a quick question about the widescreen mode - does it actually show more of the screen (like in DVD's) or is the 4:3 screen just made to fit widescreen? Really it boils down to this: with a 4:3 HDTV, should I play the game in full screen mode or in widescreen?

I read in the new EGM that the game is expected to be around 20 hours. Not necessarily short, but not as long as past Bioware games.
