2361  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Ken Kutaragi on the PS3 - expensive, 10 years on: July 28, 2005, 02:35:02 AM
I wouldn't be surprised if Sony was just talking up the price of the Playstation 3 to hype it up more (something they're very good at). As in - "hey, our system is so advanced it's going to cost a hundred zillion dollars!!!!11001101!!!" This gets all the kids excited and then when the PS3 debuts at $299 they'll think it's an incredible deal and rush out to get it at midnight.

And there are more important things to worry about than high definition telly, Miyamoto argued. "The majority of people won't be playing our system with an HDTV, though with the Revolution, 480p resolution will be standard.

I might be wrong, but don't you need an HDTV to display 480p? Or are there t.v.'s that can display 480p but no resolution higher?

2365  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / My Best Poker Tourney Ever on: July 17, 2005, 06:12:27 AM
Congrats. I play at UB and occasionally enter the multi-table tournies. So far, the best I've done is 17th (I busted out when I went all-in preflop with pocket kings, someone called with pocket queens and hit a queen on the flop). It takes a lot of patience (and some luck) to make it that far. Quite an accomplishment!

IGN gave it 8.1.

That's the first decent review I've seen. EGM gave it 5.5's or so. Gamepro (hey, I get it for free) gave it a 2.5 (I think). Even Maxim killed it (Maxim!).

That's strange:

Well, I win this round. You are player number 1001 to pick Fidel Castro from Cuba, and what a clever choice it was! You almost had me for a while, but you let your guard down. Don't worry, it happens to all of us sooner or later. Please play again, and next time I'll be ready for you, Fidel Castro from Cuba.

I wonder if it depends on the questions asked.

I was the first person to pick Byron from Andy Richter Controls the Universe. Take that, guessing game!

2374  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / IGN doesn't even cover the Revolution? on: June 16, 2005, 07:13:45 PM
Quote from: "adamsappel"
Crappy hardware? Weakest of the current-gen? Even if that were true, it doesn't matter. You said it yourself: "because there are like a half dozen absolutely phenomenal titles in each Nintendo generation it seems." THAT is how they make money.

I've highlighted the key point in that quote. A half dozen great games in 5 years just doesn't cut it for most people. That's why 3rd party support is so important.
2375  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / IGN doesn't even cover the Revolution? on: June 16, 2005, 05:53:34 PM
But I seriously doubt that the Revolution will have more systems sold worldwide than the XBox360 or the PS3. Thus, why would any 3rd party developer create a game soley for the Revolution when their potential market is greater on the other systems (plus, if they create a game for the Xbox 360, it will probably be easier to convert that game to the PS3 (which is equivalent power-wise) than to the Revolution (and vice-versa)). While it might be cheaper to create games for the Revolution, the lack of potential consumers will really turn off most 3rd party developers, IMO.
2376  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / No High def for Revolution on: June 14, 2005, 02:32:14 PM
I think it will hurt their sales in the sense that if people own multiple consoles, they will probably buy any cross platform games for the X-Box360 or PS3 rather than the Revolution.

Also, the article didn't mention whether Nintendo planned on keeping support for 480p (though they did question whether the Revolution would even have a component output). IMO, it would seem backwards for the Revolution not to support a resolution that the Game Cube already can.
2377  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / No High def for Revolution on: June 14, 2005, 01:27:36 PM
It seems to me that Nintendo is trying to make the Revolution as cheaply as possible. They are forced to have a new console to compete with the XBox360 and PS3, but I think they realize that they might not be able to compete with those consoles as far as pure power goes. Thus, my guess is that they are hoping to appeal to people by having their console sell for much less than the other next-gen consoles (if I had to guess, I would think the starting prive would be between $150 - $200).

I don't know if I buy the arguement that supporting higher definitions create much more work for the developers. How is it different than allowing your PC game to support higher resolutions? Sure the developers might need to worry a bit more about frame rates, but the power of the future consoles should be high enough to dismiss most of those fears.
2378  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Ugh, The End is totally turning me off MGS3 on: June 13, 2005, 05:25:00 PM
While I know it's too late to help you, the easiest way to beat The End is to use your map. If you are shot at, you can just check your map and the location he shot from will be marked. Once you find him, shoot him a couple of time, turn away as he throws his stun grenade, and then follow his footsteps with the thermal goggles until you get to his next spot. Repeat these steps as long as it takes to beat him. And if you lose him, just walk around until you are shot at again.

I think that was a problem for many people. The red and black colors (and the perspective?) often induced headaches..

Your specs are better than mine. The default was 800x600 for me, too. Apparently, you need to change the settings and then hit "apply" for them to save. Also, every time you create a new profile you'll need to change the settings again.

2388  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / BF1942? [update2] still problems... on: June 08, 2005, 01:13:00 PM
Though I haven't played it for awhile, I'm sure that there are still a good number of people online (especially since it seems the majority of people didn't like BF:Vietnam as much as the original).

As for mods, the most common one would be Desert Combat which sets the game in modern times. Off the top of my head, I can think of a Vietnam mod that was ok, a Pirates mod that was not nearly complete when I tried it two years ago, and a Star Wars mod that seemed decent but was just beginning when I quit playing.

2. Was Danielle's warning about "the Others" completely false? Yeah, she heard voices.. but aren't we led to believe SHE started the black smoke fire in an effort to get Turnip Head?

3. We were supposed to see part of the "creature" according to a post above. We did? You mean that freaky black smoke we saw two times? I wouldn't say that's "seeing" the creature. frown

I think the "Others" did light the fire. There were no footprints in the sand because they lit it from the boat. Danielle thought that by bringing the child to them, she could get her own child back.

There was a brief glimpse of the "creature" when it was pulling Locke. It looked like a long, retractable arm of a machine (with a clamp on the end).

2392  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / XBOX 360 more powerful than the PS3? on: May 21, 2005, 12:41:25 PM
As mentioned, it's pretty silly to assume that what's printed is completely accurate considering that it comes from Microsoft itself. On top of that, the preface to the article mentions that MS just changed some of the specs for the X-Box 360 (as a response to what they may have seen from the PS3?); who's to say that Sony won't change the PS3 specs sometime down the road?
2393  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / System Discussion: Nintendo Revolution on: May 20, 2005, 02:07:56 PM
This isn't encouraging (from IGN interview:

Quote
IGNcube: Can we expect Nintendo to collaborate with more third parties on Revolution games?

Shigeru Miyamoto: At this point, we've only been talking with a few companies. However, if other companies come forward and they want to join us to work with us to create games, of course that would be great for us. One thing we want to make sure that we don't do is have too many games of the same type or genre. We don't want too many games involving the same themes or characters.

Sounds like there might be, once again, a dearth of 3rd party support.
2394  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow FOR DS. *sigh* on: May 19, 2005, 08:39:50 PM
I think that certain 2D games could sell on the consoles, though. If another 2D Castlevania, another 2D Mario, or another 2D Metroid was made, I'd bet that it would sell pretty well. Unfortunately, I believe that only established franchises could do reasonably well with a 2D game.
2395  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / XBOX 360 Backwards compatible (NOT) on: May 19, 2005, 07:15:21 PM
Isn't the PS3 just as if not more different in architecture from the PS2 than the X-Box 360 is from the first X-Box? Why is it Sony can make their system truly backwards compatible but MS can not?  :?:
