Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Reinstalling Win 7 help
|
on: November 26, 2009, 08:41:58 PM
|
|
I downloaded a copy of Win7 through and agreement with my college & Microsoft to replaced my XP OS.
I have a single 250G HD that had the Xp OS, damage from a virus, and a whole pile of useless crap that I wanted to clear off when installing Win7. I chose the 'Custom' install as it said that whatever was in the partition would be deleted aside from XP which would be put in a file labelled 'oldcomputer' or something to that affect. I took this to mean that it would basically wipe the drive (no partitions=whole drive) and have only the Win7 OS installed. To my dismay, I was wrong. I see that I still have 200G of crap I didn't want saved. I already backed up what I wanted to keep to an external drive.
I would like to either 1: Try and format this drive somehow and reinstall Win7 on the EMPTY drive. or 2: Get a new HD(could use more space anyway and this one is already 4yrs old)
Are either of these choices viable? What is the official policy with using a CD key again? I'm still installing it on the same pc but if the HD is different will MS let me?

Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Installed Kubuntu and my G15 died
|
on: November 22, 2009, 05:25:45 PM
|
|
Kind of a random occurence. I installed Kubuntu as a separate boot option to Winxp as one of my current courses is learning Linux.
Immediately after the installation and boot into Kubutu, my logitech G15 keyboard stopped working. I rebooted into Xp, still no worky. It comes on for a split second at the initial statup then boom-nothing. I tried changing usb ports to no avail but the mouse that I had running off the keboard works fine in the usb port that the G15 was formerly occupying. I'm now using an older keyboard with a serial connection.
I have not tried uninstalling Kubuntu yet as I'm going to need it until the end of the course regardless. I don't think that the G15 is actually dead either but am curious as to what might be preventing it from working. Any ideas?

He even talks a little about Dance With Dragons: Finished a Jon Snow chapter, and have just passed the 1100 page (manuscript pages, the page count in the final printed book will be different) mark on A DANCE WITH DRAGONS. That's counting only finished chapters in something close to final form. I have considerably more in partials, fragments, and roughs.
Even with just the finished portions, DANCE is now longer than A FEAST FOR CROWS and A GAME OF THRONES, and I'm closing in on A CLASH OF KINGS. I do hope I can wrap things up before I approach the 1521 page length of A STORM OF SWORDS. anyone else sensing there may be another book added to the series? I'm pretty sure that I read in his blog somewhere that Dance was not going to be the last in the series. I'll see if I can find. EDIT: The next two proposed books are going to be called The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring.

Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Is there more than one Godzilla?
|
on: November 11, 2009, 01:40:22 AM
|
There is only the one Godzilla. All others are pretenders. GINO's, if you will. If you get the chance, watch the original un-Raymond Burr'd version of "Gojira." It is stunning how serious, scary, and emotionally devastating it is. It was only a few years after the bombs dropped and this was a way for the film makers to deal with it. I was literally blown away by it when you factor in the historical context. There's no argument the later installments grew progressively sillier (though the last one "Godzilla Final Wars" is nine kinds of awesome), the first one is very serious, frightening, and deeply sad.
I have the original one too but use Raymond Burr to show which Godzilla I was talking about. I think the DVD of Gojira also have the Burr version on it? I'm actually hoping my six year old would be up for it, but it may still be too intense for her. We almost did Frankenstein this year, but she was too intimidated. I realize now we should have done King Kong. I'll see if I can sneak that one in soon. bah, cut to the chase and go for Poltergeist. And she will forever be terrified of clowns. The scariest thing in the movie.

Oh, good! A website where we can all gather and post messages! Yeah, imagine that! It's almost as if you could talk to other people on the interwebz that you've never met! Yeah, it seems kind of redundant.

Mike Myers and Vernon Troyer. The trailers of The Love Guru were enough to earn them both a ticket. Actually, V.T. can sit in Mikes lap.
Myers's comedy is the same wherever he takes it(and its tired and unfunny), and Troyer is just a gimmick, not an actor. AWAY WITH YOU!

Being back in school, and penniless, I'll be sticking with my 7800GTX. The card has been a trooper. By the time I can afford my next upgrade the 9800GTX cards will be $200. Being forced to wait is painfull but as has been said, the highest powered cards have little to do right now outsdie of a few games.

The Wilhelm scream. It didn't bother me before I had it pointed out to me, and now it seems like every other movie has it. It completely takes me out of the movie, especially if it's a serious movie. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wilhelm_screamYES! I've heard this one many times. I didn't realize it had an actual name. I've also heard alot of sound effects that I originally heard in TES:Daggerfall. The bear growl, the sound of alteration magic being cast and particularly the creaking door. Heard them used in movies and comercials.

How is this how popular at all? I could barely watch it for 5 minutes before being bored out of my mind. There's no skill involved. It just seems to measure someone's greed level: take the offer or hope for more?
When I do watch it, I watch it for 2 reasons: 1) Boobs 2) Watching people failboat gellar That is the appeal. I can't stand Howie though and have never made it througha few minutes either.

Non-Gaming / Political / Religious Nonsense / George Bush on Deal or No Deal? Ratings drop 27%

Olds news now but I didn't see it here. Figured this belongs in Political Nonsense. On Monday, President Bush made a videotaped cameo to NBC’s “Deal or No Deal” game show, joking, “I’m thrilled to be anywhere with high ratings these days.” Ironically, the New York Post reports that Bush’s appearance was a deal-breaker, “tying the show’s worst-ever Monday-night performance.” Monday’s show had approximately 10 million viewers, “down 27 percent from its season average.”

Start with the original series and watch all that one.
Start with the original series and watch one episode. That'll be enough to make you cringe in horror. Might I recommend one with the kid and the robot dog? Yeah. That'd be a good place to start. Then watch the new miniseries and the rest of the new show. And be amazed at the improvement in sci-fi since the 70's.Yes. They no longer use monkeys in robot dog suits.

This thread should be titled "Books Read by CSL in 2008". For me so far In High Places by Harry Turtledove- a book about Crosstime traffic-travelling between different variations of our timeline, there are a few in this series(fiction) And to help satiate my need for fantasy while waiting for A Dance of Dragons to come out I started reading some R.A. Salvatore. finished the Icewind Dale trilogy and then The Dark Elf trilogy. Good stuff(late to the party, i know) Also finished Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follet

I guess I'll be the one to say the Song of Ice and Fire series. It is a series obviously, but it is worth getting into and I would recommend over Tolkein. It is more of a gritty medieval fantasy world with intricatly woven plots & characters-and few dragons. It actually has very little of the typical dragons & orcs and fireball wizards that the Tolkein/R.A. Salvatore types have. Give it a shot.
EDIT: Plywood beat me while I was typing.

I watched it and thought it was OK.....I am not sure I understand where the guys anger came from, thought that was poorly laid out..... Remember when Plainview had to be saved if he wanted to lay his pipe across that guys land? The minister slapped him around and humiliated him in the process. Not to mention the minister was a constant thorn in his side since day one. They showed Plainviews disdain for him earlier on when he slapped him around in the mud/oil and asked why didn't you cure my son? Then you take a guy who slowly went crazy, and it kind of makes sense. Oohh ok. So its about his descent into madness. I think I missed the point on my first watch. It really wasn't what I expected I guess. I though DDL was great as usual and definately agree with the kudos on the J. Greenwood soundtrack(Radiohead rules) but I think i'll have to give this one another watch.

I've never really been into the comic book character, and I hate that I have seen trailers using Black Sabbath's Iron Man to promote the film, and yet I am very interested in this.
Where exactly did you think Black Sabbath got the song title/idea from anyway? I'm also stoked for this one. And using B.S.'s Ironman is perfect for the trailers.

If you have time at night , head over to the old strip. Much of the entertainment is outside on the strip(free) and is, well, entertaining. Food/shows are the only other thing but thats definately $$$.
You could just gamble and try and win some money to eat at the finer establishments.
You probably don't have the time but you could also find a drunk rich high roller cougar and marry her, then get her money and not even have to worry about the job at all.

Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / (CCNA people) A good emulator for router config?
|
on: March 06, 2008, 03:05:44 PM

I'm looking for a good emulation program to practice router and network configurations and commands. I'm in Cisco semester 2 and we've starting configuring routers now but school access isn't always convenient for practice. If I can find a good emulator program it would make remembering all this shit easier. I think there is one on the Cisco site but apparently there are better. Packet Trace was another one suggested to me.
Any suggestions?
EDIT: Subnetting is fun.

Non-Gaming / Political / Religious Nonsense / Re: War on Scientology?
|
on: February 03, 2008, 02:43:39 PM

Wow. The magazine form of that article was used by my grade 11 world religions teacher (14-ish years ago) to teach us about cults. We also learned about David Koresh & Waco as well as the 'Anthill Kids'. I mostly agree with you. But the biggest difference that I see with Scientology is that they require one to spend LARGE amounts of money to participate in their "religion", unlike Christianity, Judeism, etc, one can choose to donate to the church but they don't have to pay money to be a part of it. One can simply pick up a copy of the bible and read it and start attending church to become a christian. Tithing's been a part of religious culture for a very long time - famously, many mormons pay 10% of their gross(!) income to the church. Back when Christianity was being established, tithes were often required by law - in England, the practice effectively lasted until the 70s, while in other countries (Germany, Austria, etc) it's still in force today. There are evangelical megachurches which apparently require adherents to sign membership "covenants" stating that they're willing to tithe a consistent percentage of their income. One doesn't see churches lobbying for that practice of taxation to end, particularly when some Christian churches explicitly teach that not tithing can jeopardize your soul. You might say "Go to another church", but that ignores that people are taught that particular faiths/denominations are the only way to eternal life, which effectively means that those people either pay up or, y'know, go to hell. In the end, all of these groups are just trying to perpetuate themselves indefinitely through whatever means they see necessary. Scientology has some ridiculous and distasteful practices, but in the context of history, there's not much difference with any of the other sects. Islam actually comes out ahead in this comparison - one of the seven pillars of the religion is to give 2.5% to charity. (Of course, as you might expect, it's mandatory in many Islamic states). I'm not really debating Tithing. What I am syaing is wrong is the withholding of information unless you pay a certain amount to the "church". At least with Christianity one can easily pick up a bible and learn most of what they need to know (along with the testaments, etc.) In Scientology they activily keep things secret from members of the "church" until such time as they have paid a certain amount of money and have reached a certain level within the church (see pyramid scheme and brainwashing). I'm not going to argue with you that other religions don't have their own faults and insane beliefs. Because they certainly do, it's just that Scientology seems to take it to a whole new level. Isn't 'Dianetics' Scientology's version of a Bible? They were selling those on the street in from of the CoS Toronto headquarters to anyone who was interested.
